Captaincy Candidates – Round 18

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 14 2022

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

BONTEMPELLI v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 159, 94, 70 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 136, 109, 125 (123 av.)

Needed to pull a VC from this game, but it was tricky: Macrae been pretty flat (TOG, touches, CPs), hard to read matchups on Sinclair, Tingles will get doubled teamed. Enter Bont. He, nor the Dogs, have been any special lately but if anyone is a chance to get the Dogs back on track on a Friday night, it’s him. Figured he’s also got that natural ceiling. I’d personally pass on a VC from this game but if you insist, then Bont may be a look for 125.

LAIRD v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 144, 185, 77 (135 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 130, 136, 105 (124 av.)

The Pies have been Laird’s best matchup since his transformation into a midfielder and he always goes to town at AO. A lock for 140.

BRAYSHAW v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 109, 122, 116 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 134, 135, 113 (127 av.)

Hit his straps the last month with 3/4 130s, better TOG and strong tackling numbers. Big contest against the Swans where Darcy should give them an edge at the coal face, Brayshaw solid for 120.

Captaincy Candidates

GAWN v Port

  • L3 v Port: 160, 102, 87 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ TIO: 135, 132, 158 (142 av.)

Got trial by fire from Stanely and Blicavs last week but now gets to ruck against two forwards in Finlayson and Dixon. That matchup combined with his phenomenal 142 average in Darwin should position him for 130+.

MILLER v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 103, 65, 134 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 107, 148, 155 (137 av.)

Maybe gets a look from Caldwell but the strength of the Suns at the present, the fact the Dons will force a contest and Miller’s record at Marvel (had a few more 150s after that L3) make him a solid fall back for 120.

ZERRETT v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 107, 137, 88 (111 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 91, 108, 99 (99 av.)

I was decidedly NOT a fan of the Zerrett pick a while back however Parish out and the Dons trademark resurgence when their season is dead has seen Zerrett reprise his role as Essendon’s main man. He’s also greatly improved his use going I50 lately which offsets his often poor DE and CP ratio in general play. Dons taking it up to everyone, Zerrett to come in hot with a 120.

Steer Clear

NEALE v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 164, 87, 151 (134 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: 85 (85 av.)

Destroyed the Giants despite a tag last time, I know, but given how non-existent the Lions were last week when Caldwell held him and the fact earlier in the week McVeigh flagged attention on him, a tagged low-ton looks likely.

Smoky Pick

PETRACCA v Port

  • L3 v Port: 85, 173, 99 (119 av.)
  • L3 @ TIO: 127, 52, 71 (83 av.)

The stage is set for The Butcher to step up. He’s gone large against them before, they get Port away from home and he’ll have silver service from Maxxy all afternoon. Can go 130.

Verdict

It’ll be Brayshaw and Maxxy on my end, however if you’ve got Laird then definitely VC him.

  1. Very tough round to make a call with potential tags for Brayshaw (Clarke) and Miller (Caldwell). No Laird for me either.

I’m hoping no Hickey for the Swans and I’ll throw the VC on Darcy otherwise it’ll probably be Dale into Merrett.

  2. Thanks for the article GD 🙂

Yep – looks like a tough round for captains!!

    Early thoughts are:

VC Laird vs Coll at Adelaide Oval

If required for my league match ups, then choose either Merrett or Touk Miller from the last game of the round at Marvel Stadium (Ess vs GC)

My main opponent has Miller – but doesn’t have Merrett.

Will take 120 points from Laird – after the “Neale debacle” last weekend

  3. Anyone know how petracca scores historically without Oliver? Obviously becomes the oppo’s no 1 mid to tag.
Come to think of it Oliver has barely missed a game over the last few years!

  4. Hey GD thanks again for your time and effort. Must read every week though I keep missing the mark with whoever I captain! Lol. Thinking Steele as VC have you got his stats? Reckon it’s a must win for saints and he could lead the way. Will have laird against my pies as a safe Captain with 120+ a certainty I reckon. Cheers and good luck.

    1. Hey, FBS.

Not a fan of Steele. Only had 13, 6 and 8 CPs in his return games.

      Here are his stats:

      STEELE v Dogs

      L3 v Dogs: 99, 137, 79 (105 av.)
      L3 @ MRVL: 109, 107, 74 (97 av.)

Up to you if you want to roll the dice. If you’ve got Laird then it’s probably okay.

  5. Hi GD,

I like the Laird into Gawn option.

Bont will be a good option with his ceiling. Dogs must win Friday night.

    Thanks,

    Paul

  6. Always my favourite read of the week, thanks GD! Captaincy options look a bit lifeless with no Oliver and a lacklustre Neale. Any thoughts on Mills for C? (VC Laird is a lock) I have a feeling Sydney will finish off these last few rounds nicely and Mills looking to bounce back after his couple of off weeks. Cheers

    1. I think Mills might have already bounced back last week mate.. I had the VC on him luckily, can he go 2 in a row?

      1. Yep just hoping the 138 wasn’t a one off! Been played out of position on and off the last couple of weeks too

    2. Hey, Fos. Yeah, have Mills myself but Freo been pretty restrictive this year.

      MILLS v Dockers

      L3 v Dockers: 122, 86, 97 (102 av.)
      L3 @ OS: 117, 122, 86 (108 av.)

Laird VC should resolve the question lol.

    1. Depends if Nank gets up.

If he doesn’t and you’ve got no one else then I guess it isn’t the worst idea; will slay Samson Ryan, LDU and Simpkin should vibe.

Would still have the aforementioned candidates ahead of him though.
