Captaincy Candidates – Round 22

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 11 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

STEWART v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 18, 104, 119
  • L3 @ MCG: 115, 123, 92

Pies paid Sicily no mind last week. While they’re different players, with Stewart looser and Sicily much more accountable, the amount of backline economy the Pies mass entries affords makes Stewart a nice look for 130 tonight.

MERRETT v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 137, 140, 117
  • L3 @ MRVL: 143, 139, 105

The Roos ruined the fun when Zerrett was on track for 300 last time. Still a nice match up for him and solid for 125 as he tries to drag the Dons to September.

LAIRD v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 115, 142, 129
  • L3 @ G: 76, 86, 89

Potential for a lot of match ups in this one and Baird looks like the safest bet for a 120. Dunkley could snap back into action and Dawson could rally but similar vibes to Crows Suns last week.

Captaincy Candidates

SERONG v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 146, 88, 53
  • L3 @ OS: 126, 101, 90

Always nice to take some action into the Eagles. With our recent, albeit marginal, uptick in form there’ll also be more scaling and contested economy on offer than usual v Eagles. Solid for 125, Brayshaw also a nice look.

ENGLISH v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 90, 102, 82
  • L3 @ UT: 102, 82

Just has to handle Reeves, so 130 won’t be too much of an ask.

LIBERATORE v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 74, 118, 132
  • L3 @ UT: 74, 132

Always find it hard to squeeze him in amongst two other Dogs most weeks but his class is undeniable and has been captaincy material this season. Looking to close the season out on a 120 average and should do the Hawks for 140 this week as they look to contain Bont and force contests.

Steer Clear

BONTEMPELLI v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 122, 115, 136
  • L3 @ UT: 122, 136

Hawks placing real value in defensive match ups recently and are the Last Kings of Scotland in that regard. Gets some attention, for a contained 120.

Smoky Pick

BRIGGS v Port

  • L3 v Port: N/A
  • L3 @ AO: 79

For those whose season or round is shot, Briggs v Port will be a spicy Sunday evening move. Regained some of his strong ATG work last week and was lively with 20 touches and 6 marks. Defintely tons, more if he gets cooking.
