Captaincy Candidates – Round 4

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 6 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

LAIRD v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 94, 107, 95 (99 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 114, 147, 133 (131 av.)

Put in an instrumental 18 contested in the Showdown last week, just went a little quiet in the last 10 and boxed himself out of a 130. Loves to carve it up at AO and Freo are languishing at the moment. Solid for 125.

ENGLISH v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 96, 50, 103 (83 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 134, 96, 123 (118 av.)

Casually going at 137.3 and the #1 SC player at the moment, Tingles is off the chain. His ruck opponent doesn’t even matter, he just balls out week to week. Would prefer him and the Dogs at Marvel instead of the G but Nank is a free kick against specialist and Tingles will smoke him up and down the ground. Set to continue the 130s.

BONTEMPELLI v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 136, 107, 96 (113 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 107, 136, 105 (116 av.)

A game altering clearance and contested performance from Bont last week didn’t translate to SC with an astounding 13 clangers, 67% DE and 6 free kicks against! Should be right this week against the Tigers midfield to tune up and lead for 120+.

Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Saints

  • L3 v Suns: 107, 115, 109 (110 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 106, 104, 110 (107 av.)

Probably cops Windhager, who went to Merrett last week, but think he’ll struggle to contain a more contested, two way specialist in Miller. If you’re thin early and angling a late duo, Miller could easily break Windhager and the Saints for 120.

GREEN v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 105, 119, 104 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 125, 117, 59 (100 av.)

Still tonned against the most restrictive midfield last week, which is great sign. Will find life a lot easier against the Dons. Solid for 115+.

SATAN v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 99, 98, 99 (99 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 85, 99, 98 (94 av.)

All subtons stats against the Eagles and up at Optus but Satan is in scintillating form and will have first use from Grundy. 130 on the cards. Darcy went 130 with 52 HOs against West Coast, so wouldn’t be surprised if Grundy does the same. Makes for a viable late C if you don’t have Satan.

Steer Clear

LDU v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 95, 77, 48 (73 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 143, 95, 119 (119 av.)

Coming back from the corkie, Blues the most restrictive midfield going around and they used Curnow on Guthrie the other week. Could easily be tagged or suffocated for a low-ton.

Smoky Pick

CRIPPS v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 138, 75, 75 (96 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 118, 98, 95 (104 av.)

Despite the heavily askew use and errant decision making, 42 touches and 20 contested signals some strong form for the big man. Expect him to touch up North for 130 amid far less pressure.

Verdict

While I do like Laird into an ailing Freo, it’ll be new recruit Tingles into Satan for me.

  1. Love this GD, look forward to 12 on Thursdays, what is a score we take from Tingles, pending Satan against the eagles?

    1. Thanks, Nighthawk. Thursday always my favourite day of the week. It all kicks off.

      Nothing less than 125-130.

  2. English into Oliver for me.
What’s the pass mark for English considering Oliver’s high scores lately?

    1. 125-130. Call it 130.

But won’t lie, if my round is cooked I could see myself throwing a hail mary on Satan.

      1. Yeah with Oliver as C I’m think min. 130 for English. Oliver is on fire and I reckon u could safely pencil him in for 140+. Now that I’ve said that he will crash and burn. Sorry everyone.

  4. I will be doing the following:

    Laird V
    Oliver C

Brought in Oliver this week so watch him crash and burn. Shit score I can tolerate but another injury to a premo I have already had enough of.

  5. Doc against North appeals, but his SC scoring us just horrid. I think good Fantasy VC but just need to see him rack up a SC score before he wears the armband.

    So, Bont as VC.

New recruit Grundy against Eagles appeals as a C choice. Thinking that’s no point picking him for my side if I don’t think he’s a C choice against the Eagles. Need to ride that selection.

    1. Yeah, Phil, I forgot to tack Doch onto the Cripps call. North could totally be the game he snaps back into action in. PBuzz just mentioned him below as well, I like it.

There’s nothing wrong with his scoring stream or role, he’s just been ass. Still Top 6, just stung a little if you started him.

  6. Struggling with rank this year but rather than following crowd with captains choices lm going to take a risk on Doch into Bont . If they clean up their disposal efficiency they could surprise this week .

  7. Bont into Clarry for me, was within a whisker of Bont having a monster score last week, should prevail this week.

        1. Yeah, fair call. No one can really. The Pies can also just rotate him between one of three positions.

          Go for it, Tom.

    1. I did. Pretty glad I did too as that’s my first captain’s score above 109 this year (it’s been rough).
