Captaincy Candidates – Round 7

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 29 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MACRAE v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 162, 107, 163 (144 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 118, 110, 127 (118 av.)

Tigers leaking clearances and MID points, with Satan and Racca getting 36 and 38 a piece the other night. Expect Macrae and Bont to replicate their dynamic this week, with Macrae sailing to 35+ touches and 140~.

BONTEMPELLI v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 96, 146, 106 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 92, 127, 97 (105 av.)

Same deal as Macrae, with Bont picking up Dunkley’s CP work for 125 with a large ceiling if he carries.

GRUNDY v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 105, 121, 136 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 153, 92, 135 (127 av.)

Last week the Suns’ makeshift rucks in Graham and Burgress managed 18 hitouts to Sinclair and Reid’s 72. If second fiddles in Sinclair and Reid did that, then I don’t see how Grundy doesn’t go 50 HOs and 140+ on his home deck.

Captaincy Candidates

GAWN v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 212, 117, 111 (147 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 212, 111, 172 (165 av.)

In deadly form and has an insane ceiling both against the Roos and at Blundstone Arena. Even against an established ruck in Goldstein, Gawn and Dees will still feast on the Roos. A lock for 135+.

PETRACCA v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 160, 97, 106 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 97, 64 (81 av.)

Roos been employing Turner as a tagger on small frame MIDs like Brayshaw and Laird, so he likely takes Satan this week – freeing up Petracca to bust the Roos open for 130.

FYFE v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 76, 114, 126 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 125, 133, 92 (117 av.)

Gotten his annual injury out of the way and is flying right now. Could have easily gone massive last week with 32 touches and an insane 23 contested, but kept to 125 by 5 frees against, 4 straight behinds and 8 clangers. Eagles engine room chronically depleted without Shuey and Yeo, as well as no Hutchings to tag, so expect Fyfe to serve up another 125 this week.

Steer Clear

MITCHELL v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 94, 108, 126 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 135, 143, 108 (129 av.)

Only the 25 touches, 10 contested and 2 clearances against the Crows and hampered in previous weeks by a low CP %. Likely to receive defensive attention from Ross this week and serve up a low-ton. Better options this week, just look elsewhere.

Smoky Pick

ZIEBELL v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 100, 80, 116 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: 126, 80, 140 (115 av.)

Averging 127 with an insane ceiling as that spare, loose interceptor taking all the kick outs. With the Dees to put the Roos on blast defensively, expect 130 from Ziebell.

Verdict

Lot of great options this week, very conflicted. Can’t go wrong with a combination of a Bulldog and G&G. For me, I’m thinking I’ll just back in the big fellas like I did last week and take whatever Macrae and Bont serve up as icing.

    1. That’s my thinking exactly, Chosen.

Only thing is the Tigers let opposition MIDs get off the chain, so Macrae could go large.

      Very tricky.

  1. Can’t go wrong with any combination of Gawndy & Macca.

Think you sold me on Macca though GD.

    Macca -> Grundy

    1. Yeah, might flick the VC back onto Macrae myself and make my Friday night a little more interesting lol.

      Best of luck, Abs.

  2. I’ve gone Dunks or Bont into Gawn for weeks now and its cost a few points.

    T/U Bont into Gawn
T/D Gawn into Merrett (with a quick finger on Sunday…have to decide by 3/4 time)

  3. I am going Grundy into Fyfe. Hoping Grundy will decide it for me on Saturday. The idea of Fyfe against a WCE without Hutchings is just too tempting.
    135 cut off .

    1. Yep. Very nice, Jeannot.

I don’t have Fyfe, but I’m certain he’s going to tear us [West Coast] up on Sunday.

      Bonne chance.
