Captaincy Candidates – Round 8

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 4 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

WALSH v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 99, 130, 119 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 130, 111, 115 (119 av.)

A popular POD in for many. Been going at it really well and the Lions aren’t as dense as the used to be. A nice look for 120 if you like to kick off your round with a first drop VC.

TARANTO v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 102, 61, 78 (80 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 144, 114, 112 (123 av.)

How good has Taranto been! Still a butcher but putting together consistent numbers week to week and now going at 117.6 as the #7 player OA. The Eagles at the G might be too good to be true but 125 really shouldn’t be out of the question.

LAIRD v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 118, 102, 120 (113 av.)
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 118, 85, 59 (87 av.)

The a resurgent and dense Geelong in Geelong isn’t ideal to crash into but Baird’s remains a consistent contest presence. Hits 120 if the Crows compete. Dawson doesn’t scream out either. Blicavs matches up perfectly on him and expecting him to get a look early – he could of course still get off the chain. Both “eh” but viable this week, mentioned them to pre-empt the inquiries.

Captaincy Candidates

SATAN v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 121, 166, 106 (131 av.)
  • L3 @ HBS: 121, 112, 100 (111 av.)

Took his foot off the gas against the Roos last week but a fractionally more competitive Suns outfit has Satan and running and gunning for four quarters. No Miller means he’ll run the show for 130+.

BONTEMPELLI v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 100, 120, 127 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: 127, 63, 141 (110 av.)

Had a 0 Coaches Votes performance against the Hawks and still put up a casual 125. In sensational form, keeps hauling ass for 120+ this week.

ENGLISH v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 88, 110, 76 (91 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: 76, 83 (80 av.)

Reeves and the Hawks kept the Dogs honest to produces Tingles “worst” score of the year – a 90. Just didn’t get those looping possessions and freedom to get involved around the ground. He’ll whip Flynn for 130 this time around.

Steer Clear

DAICOS v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 62 (62 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 145, 109, 149 (131 av.)

It finally happened: Daicos got some real attention put into him. The main consequence of a tag from Keays was it clamped down on his use, a season low 55%, and deprived him of those signature HB receives. With that sample and the Swans use of Clarke on Whitfield last week, he’s almost certainly in Horse’s sights. Flat ton on the cards.

Smoky Pick

STEELE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 154, 128, 109 (130 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 126, 54, 96 (92 av.)

Another popular trade target after strong presentation last week. No real reason he doesn’t crush the Roos for 130+. Sinc could also be good, able to accrue at high efficiency and did North for 140 last year.

History

  • Round 1: Green 132
  • Round 2: Baird 147
  • Round 3: Satan 156
  • Round 4: Tingles 145
  • Round 5: Tingles 137
  • Round 6: Miller 40
  • Round 7: Satan 134

Verdict

Forgoing the early options for the big ballers in Satan and Tingles. Like their match ups. I’ll be at Tigers Eagles on Saturday so watch Taranto get 53 touches and make me want to throw myself from Level 2.

  1. My K.I.S.S. method seems to be going okay so why change –

    Oliver V
    Bont C

Now if I could just have a round wear one of my players ends up with a multi week injury that would be nice.

  2. Taranto into the “new old” recruit Steele, unless teams throws yet another curve ball at me tonight.

  3. I am really lacking solid VC/C options this season I don’t own Laird, English or clarry. Thankfully bont has been huge this season and consistent. It’ll be taranto into bont for me this weekend.

  4. Yep- not sure about Laird- seems to be playing with a niggle and might soft lockdown from Atkins while Blicavs will probably make Dawson accountable.
Might got Oliver into either Butters or Rozie- hmmmm which one?

    1. Agree with Pope’s Army’s assessment (posted in Trade Talk) – “Stewart doesn’t push up central enough to cop a tag like Keays. If anything assign a defensive fwd like Jones.”
I personally think he’s good for 120. Whether that’s as reliable as a Satan/Bont/Tingles score worth taking is another story…

    1. GWS have said they will put some time into Bont. He’s probably good enough regardless but I’d be wary putting the C on him this week.

    1. Hey, Bruce.

Eh, not really. I’ve got him and his game has been flat lately. Had that 170 v North and chugged along nicely last week but otherwise 5/7 scores below 120. Just so prone to low accu games, no two way or score involvement work.

Could go well (hopefully he does) but have named candidates well ahead of him for the VC.

  5. Hi GD,

What do you think about Petracca as a POD smokey? Do you have L3 numbers for him against Suns please?

I do like (VC) Taranto into (C) Oliver – Oliver loves playing the Suns.

Thanks again in advance for all your great work GD.

    Cheers,

    Paul

    1. PETRACCA v Suns

      L3 v Suns: 129, 148, 104
      L3 @ HBS: 129, 130, 82

Up to you, Paul. Don’t mind it.

  6. Got Taranto as the VC glitch this week, due to him coming up against west coast.

In case of a poor score…

    TU: Bont (C)
    TD: Oliver (C)

  7. VC: Clarry
    C: Man of Steele

Not taking chances with the weather gods this weekend. Sunny on the Goldy and a roof for Captain Jack!

    1. Was on light duties this week and narrowly got up for selection apparently.

I’d stick with a named candidate but with his record I get why you’re interested:

      DARCY v Hawks

      L3 v Hawks: 91, 183, 129
      L3 @ OS: 137, 132, 41

    1. Was thinking the same. At Marvel, will be a lot of contested ball and he is due for a big score
