Captaincy Candidates – Round 8

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

None of the early options this week have particularly good match ups. All set to play in high stakes, likely evenly balanced clashes and thus require little commentary. Take a flyer on whoever your loop allows. This week’s strongest candidates all play Saturday night onward: Gawn, Zerrett, Serong, Bont and Rowell.

BUTTERS v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 134, 79, 58
  • L3 @ AO: 82, 130, 119

DAICOS v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 82, 100, 59
  • L3 @ MCG: 128, 133, 54

WALSH v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 92, 123, 105
  • L3 @ MCG: 104, 99, 108

HEENEY v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 54, 82, 141
  • L3 @ SCG: 98, 128, 144

Captaincy Candidates

GAWN v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 92, 98, 135
  • L3 @ MCG: 162, 138, 113

He too requires no commentary: averaging 136.1, 3/7 scores over 160 and now gets the Stanely led Cats. Don’t see how he doesn’t make it 4/8 scores over 160.

MERRETT v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 143, 110, 111
  • L3 @ OS: 126, 110, 111

Been supremely consistent without going large just yet. The Eagles will offer a perfect blend of fierce inside contest and a lax uncontested ball differential. Should fill up for 140.

SERONG v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 108, 86, 82
  • L3 @ MCG: 140, 93, 75

The Tigers did experiment with Pickett tagging Petracca last week but don’t think they look at Serong that way. Tigers remain an excellent MID (and DEF, so don’t mind Ryan either) fixture. A lock for 130.

BONTEMPELLI v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 115, 122, 136
  • L3 @ MRVL: 125, 73, 110

Didn’t quite string it together last week and spent an unconscionable amount of time stuck on the bench late, however the Hawks at Marvel is a stable enough match up for 130.

ROWELL v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 109, 87, 103
  • L3 @ G: 87, 79, 70

Like any of the Suns boys here as the Lions have no answers at the moment. All solid for 120+, with Rowell swallowing up all the CP work similar to Green last week.

Steer Clear

GREEN v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 126, 118, 164
  • L3 @ SCG: 118, 55, 88

On Green, it was great to see him go large with 37 and 17 contested but Rowbottom can too easily be deployed to him the minute he starts baking. Can still go 120 against the slightly one way Swans but just has a potential ceiling cap in Rowbottom. Pass.

Smoky Pick

STEELE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 160, 95, 154
  • L3 @ MRVL: 84, 126, 102

Fallen well off over the last fortnight against two dense midfields but North is as good an opportunity as any to bounce back. Massive alarm bells if he doesn’t go 140 and look good.
ENGLISH v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 143, 90, 102
  • L3 @ MRVL: 114, 58, 124

Will definitely fill up here against Meek, who lost the HOs 20-43 v Swans last week. He’s also off that annoying ruck split with Darcy. Solid for 125 if things fall through.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133
  • Round 7: Rowell 136

Verdict

Without Gawn, it’ll be Heeney into Zerrett on my end. As mentioned, all the early options are pretty mediocre assuming most teams don’t have a loop on Sunday. The Big Five should all deliver though.

  1. Cheers GD
I’m torn, if sexton playing means makes more cash but if not then opens up a lot of vc loop possibilities. Just leaving the C on Gawn until he lets me down I reckon. Good luck all

  2. If Draper isn’t named, I’m going Gawn into Serong.
Otherwise it is Sheezel into Gawn.
Sheezel is playing the Saints who are the easiest team to score against for defenders and he has been quite consistent. Yet to sub tonne and scored 159 against Geelong so has a good ceiling.

    1. I am nervous about Sheezel’s flagged change of role to more midfield. If I was sure he would have his defender role I would certainly be taking him. But now, I think he’s a watch.

    2. Draper is named, ok option 2 it is
Glad he can still make cash though with Pink returning too!

  3. I’m thinking Gawn into Bont.
I’m wary of Bevo subbing Bont out of the game early like he did with Libba a few weeks back. Valid concern or am I overthinking the Bevo factor?

  4. Dees (7:30) / Bombers (8:10) game is a bit disappointing!

    Will go Gawn into Rowell.

  5. I’ve gone Butters into The Bont. Butters scored 124. Seriously thinking of taking that….

  6. I really wanted to go Gawn into serong but my last loop hole is Reid from Essendon, opponent has vc on Gawn
    – Am I crazy to keep the vc on Gawn and see how the first quarter goes ?
    TU – ur crazy
    TD – do it

  7. Don’t have Gawn.
    Bypassed Butters and Daicos.
Roll the dice on Heeney into Bont for me.

    1. I’m worried about super slick Heeney on the wet deck in Sydney. If it buckets down, I think he’s too big a risk as VC. Class May prevail of course.
