Game Chat – Geelong v Essendon

Written by Motts on July 2 2021

Where and when: Kardinia Park at 7:50pm (AEST)

Last time they met: Round 16, 2020: Geelong 17.6 (108) DEF Essendon 5.12 (42) at The Gabba.

Last five: Geelong 4-1, Essendon 3-2

Match Preview: As tired as Geelong looked last week against The Lions, we can forgive them one off week. They’ll be happy to be getting back to the familiar confines of Kardinia Park and the massive number of free kicks they’ll receive from opposing defenders spraying the ball out on the full due to the narrowness of the ground. Essendon are looking like a real 11th place team right now. They knock off the teams they should (North, West Coast, Hawthorn) but fail when they find themselves up against quality outfits (Melbourne, Richmond). Geelong at home is one such quality outfit.

Mottsy Watch:

Geelong
Stewart, Dangerfield, Hawkins
Richmond
Merrett, Parish, Jones (really like watching this kid play)
Mottsy’s Tip: Geelong by 30 points (tipping record 31/42).

    1. And how convenient you don’t own Stewart and go for the Dons lol?

Got Stewart, Cameron, Zerrett and Langford in this one.

Thinking the Dons take it right up to the Cats. Still haven’t locked in a tip.

      1. Good luck tonight GD
I’ve got Stewart, Zerrett and Langford as well. Also traded Danger in this week.

    1. O’Connor out definitely helps, although Selwood or someone might put work into him.

Fine VC, but I’d prefer a Lion, Demon or Dog this week.

Own Zerrett, so hope he pops off nevertheless.

  2. All week I tossed up danger or pendles.
Pendles won in a toss of the coin. Danger guaranteed 150 !!

  3. Got Merrett Stewart Ridley and danger on debut this week. My last forward debut has score 50 and 60 in the last weeks ( thanks shai!) would be a very happy camper with a danger 100 this week.

    Good luck this week Macca!

    1. you too Tom – just realised we are up against each other in GD’s league … Zerret already letting me down as the VC and not even being tagged …

      1. Yeah has been a weird one Macca, I was gonna chuck it on him but went for Gawn, hes been pretty underwhelming this half, hoping he picks up in the 2nd half for both of our sakes.

  4. Big game for me tonight.

    VC Danger
    Hawkins
    Stewart
    Ridley

I was going to go VC Hawkins but the weather and Cameron Mooney saying Danger was playing Midfield changed my mind.

Stewart “playing” on Dev Smith. He could go HUGE!

      1. Cheers GD

I was going to just straight Captain Bont v North.

I figured I’d give Danger the VC in the wet. He will need to go very large ( 140+ ) for me to take it.

Sorry about Cameron. looks like a string 🙁

Hopefully my boys get back going again here. Otherwise could be a long night.

Might be time to open the Red wine

  5. I know this site does not accept or like bagging of the umpire’s but the umpire there had no idea what he was talking about in relation to the Cameron shot at the end of the First Quarter. What hope does anyone have when a person adjudicating the game doesn’t know the rules.

    7

    1. The umpire was correct. You are not aloud to go off your line to have a shot (or any kick would be called play on) unless the siren has gone. Then you are aloud to start of the line but must still kick over the mark. (think Buddy arc and around the corner set shots) I hope this makes sense.

      1. Thanx for trying to Clear it up but I’m still confused. As long as you don’t go over the mark it can’t be called play on. If kicking from the boundary, your allowed to start on the fence. You aint over your mark then.

        1. No your not aloud to go off your line (sideways). Kicking from the boundary you have to start from your line. But when the siren has gone you are able to start off the line but must kick from the line (the line from were the mark is to the centre of the goals) I think i’m confusing myself.

  6. Langford 6 touches, 3 contested but 2 clangers and 50% DE holding him back.

Need him to tune that up.

  7. Have 200k in bank seriously considering Patrick Cripps to Walsh. Only 100k more and averaging nearly 30 pts more. 6 trades left so acknowledge it is a luxury trade.

TU do it, 30 pts extra per game to good to ignore
TD don’t, Cripps will come good

  8. I like the idea of upgrading Murray but hows the rest of your team looking. 5 trades left isnt many for the rest of the season!

You’re right though, least he scraped by to a half ton.

  10. Tom, Team it is full promo except for 3 forwards l need , will aim for danger, Toby green and probably keep Robertson as F 6. Alternatively I could replace Cripps for laird and bring Whitfield in. Would this be better

    TU Whitfield
    TD Walsh

  11. Still need 3 forwards and have 6 trades left, whats your forward line look like? I think that would be priority one.

      1. Definitely gotta upgrade the forwards before you move up cripps I reckon. Especially with 6 trades left.

      1. Hey macca , how does parish fit in to your Golden child theory, being well looked after by CD. Has been good but 115 at half time?

        7

        0
        1. yep – the key thing to look at is how they are scored by the CD scorer … if you just look at the stats count in FF, then they will always make it close, based on the points system … the real questions to try and watch are “did he really earn that CP?” or “was that kick / handball really effective?” and so on … certain players (ie Bont) always just get scored favourably … in many games this year I have drawn to attention instances where players are either given an effective stat or not given it … it’s amazing how often the ones that CD seem to focus on get given an effective kick say for a ball that doesn’t travel 40metres and doesn’t get taken by a team mate etc … and in the same game or the next game another “lesser known player” kicks it over 40 metres, inside the 50, maybe misses the first team mate but it gets collected by the next player … and they are scored minus points for it … and so on …

Touk last night was beneficiary to several questionable calls and whilst playing well, I think got the favourable calls … I must admit tonight though that I haven’t been watching players or the scores as much as more just watching my Bombers … so can’t make a call on Parish … he has a lot of CP’s, which straight up is potentially 72 points on their own or in that range … with a lot of effective kicks supposedly … if they are all valid … and that’s the IF!!

Also remember that with their scaling system, players that get a lot of early stats and scored effective escalate quickly and then often slow as the game progresses and more points need to be shared around … particularly if they drop off on their numbers / effectiveness …

I’ll try to watch Parish a bit more closely in the second half and see what it looks like … I don’t own him either sadly …

          3

        2. OK Bruce (and anyone else that is interested) here’s my take on Parish and scoring in the third quarter:
          – at start of quarter, over first 5-6 minutes, he was scored as 3 CPs which I do not think were
          – he had two scores of effective kicks – yes
          – two effective HB’s – yes
          – 1 ineffective kick clanger – yes
          – 1 ineffective HB clanger – yes
          – mark, goal – yes and scored the ineffective handball in there and then he scambled for the loose ball to get possession and kick the goal – he received a CP for that – hmmm – either way
he went to bench and while on bench his scores were sclaed back by 3 points
          – scored a tackle after back on – no – I don’t think he made the tackle, stopped the play etc and the Geelong player handballed it to a teammate – no
          – then magically got a 2 plus points doing nothing
          – scored another CP – no
          – took an intercept mark and scored as CP – yes
          – kick from mark inside 50M but not over 40 metres and not taken by team mate but was scored effective – no
          – 1 ineffective kick clanger – yes
          – effective kick – yes
          – effective handball – yes

So, by my scoring, I think he was “padded out somewhat” by their interpretations of 4 CP’s which I dont think were there, a tackle not there and the effective kick that didn’t go over 40M or taken by teammate etc … (see many when they are not paid to people exactly like that) … and also the plus 2 that just came from nowhere …

I think that is how CD “reward” key players that they like. You can call it “down to interpretations” or anything like that … but just not there.

What I will say is, he does get around the ball areas a lot … which is his role and it tough watching and recording (which they dont do, the call it out into recordings and someone else scores etc … but they also call many players etc) …

Not scoring 4th quarter now … but as I said last night, well done to those that got onto Touk and those with Parish!! (I do have him in my Tech Team … probably the only thing that went right for my tech side this year!!)

Make of it what you will all …

          1. Hi Macca, Great analysis, I’ve always found the CD bias interesting but watching this game Parish was everywhere and always in the right spot. Geez with another preseason and some weights he is gonna be a beast. First pick next year, wishing i had him this year. Bruce.P i hadn’t heard Golden child since the movie, long forgotten great one with Eddie Murphy, what a ripper. Will have to see if i can stream it.

            1. Thanks. yep – if you watch enough matches and the players of interest and sit with a score sheet set up and watch the scores and stats changes via FF, then you can begin to see how certain players get favourbale scores / interpretations etc … and every year CD pick one or two in particular

Whilst not really focussing on the last quarter with Parish, a really telling one for me was in the last minute and a half or so when ke kicked a scrubby kick that barely travelled 20-30M and the commentators said gee that’s bad he’s running out of steam etc etc … and he went bumbling along the ground and not collected correctly by a team mate etc … and he still got given an effective kick and score increase!!

The trick it seems is to try and pick these ones each year and get on them early … and as I indicated, I didn’t pay attention to anything really in the first half and tried to enjoy the footy … just went through that above for Bruce to try and detail how it can be “padded” out. His early CP’s in that third quarter that I would not call that were two handballs received from teammates in the clear and him in the clear with noone around him and the third from a hitout at ball up that went about 15 m into the clear and he was wide open on his own … (he then went to kick a clanger) – and he was given CP’s, IMO, incorrectly … these are the swings and roundabouts we have to take I guess …

From what I understand with CD they have a couple of game callers that call out what they see, watching through binoculars, and it gets input by another person on the other end … they also have some people scoring via video replays … so its interesting how it all plays out …

and he’s been updated to 190 now …

              1. Macca. This is like the best SC stuff I could ever read. I love it. Thank you. Does anyone know any CD guys and or girls? I can’t imagine doing it for a job and not playing SC and being on this site. THE best place to be. I don’t stress too much about the craziness of point allocation but if I could pick these “golden childs” nice and early next year it’s crazy not to. Am sure we have all watched games and jaws have been dropped at the SC scores, and it’s funny how happy or unhappy we are depending on if they are in our team.

    1. well if you add the two you pretty much averaged 100 … so not too bad?? (*wink* ) – but I feel ya! Stuck with CCJ in my tech side on field – ouch …

  16. SOS (Son of Shaggi) is NOT a happy camper.

He has CCJ at F6 and Atkins who is likely to ton up as F7

On my behalf I say to Guthrie WTF!!!

You have pretty much spudded it up since you came back from your bung shoulder.

Well done to everyone who brought in Danger this week, you nailed it

      1. Congrats on the owners who brought Danger in, commiserations to the fools like me who planned on CCJ making coin and buying danger cheaper around $485. It’s worth noting his average for the last 5 years in SC grand finals is 166. What a Supercoach legend

    1. I think he’s a pretty underrated player and is critical to Geelong’s finals aspirations as he can basically do whatever job is asked of him.

    1. They came out when we thought O”Connor was likely in as a tagger.

Gunboat does a great job with the Captains Candidates. Just remember they’re a guide and should be used as such. If you have a feeling about someone go with your gut.
