Game Chat – Port v Essendon

Written by Motts on April 5 2024

Venue: Adelaide Oval

Time: 8:10pm AEDT

Last time: Port Adelaide 11.12 (78) d Essendon 10.14 (74), R16 2023

What it means
Port Adelaide (2-1) did a lot right against Melbourne in having more shots on goal and an additional 21 inside 50s without clinching the statement win it arguably needs against a top-four contender. The Power must now make the most of their second of three consecutive matches on home turf against a Bombers side they have beaten in all of their seven meetings going back to 2018.

Essendon (2-1) turned to effort as much as an ‘edge’ in its rousing come-from-behind victory over St Kilda as its midfield won the battle at the coalface and around the ground. The Bombers are still a work in progress but can put themselves in a strong early position with a second consecutive win over a finals hopeful.

Game shapers
Zac Butters battled hard without having his usual influence against Melbourne after starting the season with a pair of dominant displays. The Power will need Butters to quickly bounce back to his best especially against a Bombers midfield building on their balance and strength around the contest.

Essendon needed a forward to step up when the game was on the line against St Kilda and it was little surprise when Jake Stringer was the one to do just that. The ‘Package’ delivered another match-turning performance against the Saints to add to a powerful start to the season that has already produced 10 goals.

    1. Thanks Natopotato, for posting the update.

Would you be able to post tomorrow’s afternoon updates as I won’t be available?

      1. Yeah, I should be able to post the first two games as I like to provide helpful information when I can. Other coaches in the community should be able to take the initiative to do it too.

I feel you shouldn’t need to rely on yourself to post these match updates though. You supply enough useful information as it is!

  1. Can Rozee clean up his disposal here tonight and can give me a 130+. He’s found plenty of it the past 2 weeks just used it poorly hurting his SC score.

  2. Anyone start Zerrett?

Him and Racca kinda dismissed as basic bitch, low upside picks but wāw: they’ve been bangers.

    1. Yeah I fluked my way to Merrett GD. Been brilliant so far. Was watching Trac last night and wondering how the hell I started Dawson in front of him and then wondered how I would get him in……

    2. Started Bont and wanted Green and Serong more. Along with Steele. Cash wise couldn’t get to Merrett. Didn’t have Merretts points all last year and couldn’t quite get him in at any stage 🙁 Tracc was a jet for me but hoping to get him on a price drop when Oliver gets up to speed and he goes Fwd more…

    1. The seagull will only kick to someone who gives it back if his defensive pressure /tackling would improve he’d be a ripper but he’s still a fantasy gun get on nick Martin

      1. He’s only had 2 clangers so far from 30 disposals and at 70% DE
That’s what he lacked a lot of the first couple of games too

  3. I hate when I get a VC score of 115-120. Never know whether to take it or risk it. Just another 5 points and I would have been fine.
C is on Heeney against the Eagles hmmm….

    1. JHF @ 430k, ave 120ish after 2 games, another solid game next week he gets a juicy price rise. But, he’s missed 2 games already through low grade hammy. Big balls required for risk/reward I think.
I’m Alberton born and bred and stoked for my boys Butters/Rozee doing pretty well in my line-up. Toyed with having JHF as cheaper starting M5 but went a different path in the end. Still…could be a break-out season for the Hornet?
      Georgie @ 230k…nah

    2. Wines to return next game too. Not sure how their midfield goes with Rozee, Butters, Drew, Wines and JHF.
They’ve been the main CBA mids
JHF also only had 62.5% TOG
