Game Chat – Port v Richmond

Written by Motts on April 9 2021

Where and when: AO, 7:50pm (AEST)

Last time they met: PF 2020: Port 6.4 (40) DEF BY Richmond 6.10 (46) at AO

In a gruelling, taxing and absorbing preliminary final on Friday night, Richmond gave itself another chance at a flag with a thrilling six-point victory over Port Adelaide. Richmond, as it has for years, simply found a way. Dustin Martin (21 disposals, two goals) was again heroic in every facet of the game, while a late rear-guard stand ensured a Grand Final ticket was ultimately booked. Connor Rozee (14 disposals, two goals) had lit the flame for Port Adelaide’s early hopes of securing victory, while Xavier Duursma (19 disposals, one goal) battled hard all night. But the hosts fell devastatingly short when it mattered.

Match Preview: Both teams were flying until last week when they suffered losses to West Coast (away) and Sydney (home) respectively. Port will come into this one with something to prove after the Prelim loss last year but the same could be argued for Richmond, humbled on their own deck by a bunch of kids 6 days ago. I’m just hoping the new rules mean that we won’t be treated to such a dour final scoreline as their last match up.

Motts Watch:

Port
I have no Power players gracing my SC team so I’ll say Trav Boak (who just keeps on keeping on), Charlie Dixon (who’s a beast when he’s on his game), and Zac Butters (who shot out of the gates with 98 and 163 but then scored a paltry 55 last week).

Richmond
Whispers are that Damo could play a few kids this week. I’ll keep an eye out for them. But my main focus will be on my man Dusty.

Mottsy’s Tip: Richmond by 10 – I always place a lot of emphasis on a trip home from WA the week before. (current tipping record 8 from 10)

  1. I know it’s a sin to go early on a rookie but what is LJones like? He looked real good in the AAMI and pre season…

Have til tonight’s game to make a call on this trade or I’m copping a donut down back. Lachie Jones, parks or chapman.. who is it? I just want the best JS going forward . Have an hour to make this decision.

    TU : Jones
    TD: chapman
    Below parks

    1. If you want to avoid the donut and can, go up to someone like Jiath. Use duals if you have them.

OR, consider taking the – 20-30 point loss of points via the donut. It’s early (especially if H2H) and no guarantee on JS for those other options. – trades are gold remember.

Better to wait the two weeks on Jones and see if his JS looks better – Port are a strong side.
Chapman JS must be somewhat shaky with the Freo players due back

      1. Unfortunately I cannot get jiath. I tried Phillips too Impey & dow too jiath and fell 4k short. Just my luck haha i think I need a player onfield but not keen on the price and JS of chapman and JS of Jones scares me . I don’t want to trade sharp to then have that player dropped in a week or two

          1. There is my team Macca and only 40 minutes :/

DEF: Laird. Daniel Short HClark JClark Highmore (Fyfe sharp)

MID:. Oliver MacRae Merrett Walsh Taranto gulden Campbell Jordan (berry Powell Brockman)

            RUCK: GAWNDY (Flynn)

FWD: Dunkley Phillips Ziebell Atkins Warner dow ( Rowe Scott)

            BANK: 5k

I am thinking Phillips too Impey but not a must do. And need to cover that donut down back I already copped a 0 last weekend don’t want it again.

            1. gee mate, that’s a tough spot to be in.
Lack of cash is the killer.
Phillips to Impey a bit sideways for mine … so not really worth the trade.

The defence options in JOnes or Chapman are not bottom priced either, so you can’t swap Highmore out without another trade.

If you really want to avoid the donut I’d be inclined to drop Dow out and get in one of those two … perhaps Chapman as he should at least play a few weeks …

BUT it means missing both of Impey and Jiath … you will have extra cash though for future weeks.

Ifv really keen on no donut, the yeah, the only option is Phillips to Impey and Dow to one of the others you listed … not ideal but …

sorry mate, not much help for you.

              1. Yeah it’s far from ideal Macca thanks for the reply though Phillips is a flop I really thought he’d be More inside and average that 95-100 but far from it happy to go down to Impey.

Defensively will probably be sharp too Jones or chapman but not keen on either.

                  1. Missed the boat Macca.
I will have a look at jones tonight if he looks the real deal tonight I may pass on chapman cop a donut and get jones next round.

If jones flops tonight I can go to chapman still

            2. Maybe Phillips to Impey and Sharp to Butts or Burgess. Butts still has a -6 breakeven, and solid JS. Burgess isn’t on the bubble yet but probably pretty good JS for a few weeks as the Suns don’t have any rucks.

  3. Any insight on JS of Martyn & Mansell from Richmond?

Not trading either of them in tonight, just wondering what their chances may be going forward.

    1. No word as yet, Tom. We’ll have to see them tonight.

Always a good sign when rookies crack into a premiership side though.

  4. Rookie crisis at D6. Sharp dead early, Highmore hard done by and I don’t think Kos will be named let alone score well. In comes Jones.

Big wraps on him internally, Hinkley gives kids a run if they perform and injury to Bonner has freed up a spot – hopefully he makes it his.

Joins Martin and Short for me in this one.

      1. Spot on mate. Level of umpiring is so F-en pathetic in most games Im watching.
Houli just got pinged after touched, both him & Gray weren’t sure -umps explanation to Houli: nothin else we
Can do there. 98% of the time when nobody heard call it’s ball up FFS you moron.

  6. Just a question.
Is Hurn an option for down back.
His 3 game average is strong
    Only in 1.5% of teams.
Already have Ridley. Have the cash to go from young to Hurn

    1. Thats what happens when you have an academy of dimwits, trained to umpire a complex game without havin any hands on experience at playin our great game. Far too few ex players of a decent level umpiring

    2. Tigers giving away multiple frees because the halt in play benefits them…….again

Tigers fans whingeing because the free kick count is against them…..again

  8. Next week I’m getting rid of Dow. With Dow’s current cash (202K) I will have 287K to spend on a replacement. Who should I choose?

    Like the message: Impey

Comment on another potential option if you think someone else.

  9. Hello,

Looking to trade out Dow but with the teams coming out and my defense is lacking with highmore omitted i was planning to get Impey now but looks like i need to focus on my defense but is it worth getting impey nextweek?

  10. How do the AFL allow a medical jab? If they were serious about player injuries. Also isnt that medical enhancing?

  11. Great game absolutely ruined by umpires once again. It’s getting ridiculous now if it wasn’t already been

  12. Tigers biggest problem is their ‘professional’ free-kicks strategy when they are likely to lose a contest. It is breaking the rules for benefit/cheating when the penalty is less than than the obvious result if legal play had eventuated.
It worked when the game was slow but with a 50-50 W-L ledger it is questionable strategy this year.
Cheats never prosper but the tiger barmy are still crying foul because the free-kick count is against them despite their team consistently giving away free kicks on purpose. I suppose that it should be expected, most tigers fans know stuff all about footy.

    1. Cheats never prosper, very true! That’s why richmond have won 3 of the last 4. Played the game better than everyone else when it counted.

  13. Lachlan Jones: 61 points
    17 disposals 14 kicks.
8 intercept possessions (2nd most for Port)
    2 intercept marks
    3 spoils
    4 inside 50s
    58% DE

    1. I reckon in a “normal” game his DE improves and therefore his scoring. That was finals level intensity tonight and he looked the goods in my book. Rock solid JS too – they’d be calling for Hinkley’s head if he tried to drop him!

  14. We all know that umpires miss a lot of obvious free kicks. Real coaches like Damien Hardwick are also aware of that.
Hardwick has always had minimal respect for the rules and the ‘spirit of the game’ his attitude towards sports rules was nurtured by his mentors during his playing career and they went on to create Australia’s very first sports drug lab where athletes are the guinea pigs; so you can’t expect the bloke to play fair.

Damien knows that if an open contest is 70-30 it is better to give away a free kick and at worst hold up play or at best the umpire misses the free and you win the ball and create a turnover than it is to risk losing the contest; it is better to cheat than it is to risk losing.

The AFL need to impose a 50mtr penalty for all free-kicks that can be interpreted as ‘professional’ free kicks.
It is cheating and cheats shouldn’t be allowed to prosper like Richmond have.

    1. David, you have a lot of strong opinions on footy. Good for you. But how about you build your own forum where you and other people can debate these ideas instead of trying to high jack this one that has been built over a decade and is based on SC.

Otherwise your comments just seem like troll fodder and everyone will ignore them, just like another user Adam (I don’t discount that you could be the same person).

Good luck with your new forum!

    2. David mate you understand this site is 99% for Supercoach discussion right??

If you want to troll/bait, and in general be an all-round twat, go write some articles for The Roar or join Bigfooty to get your fix.
