Game Chat – St Kilda vs Melbourne

Written by Thommo on March 27 2021

Where and when: Disney Dome, Saturday 27th April 2021 at 7:25pm (AEDT)

Last time they met: R14, 2020: Melbourne 8.4 (52) def St Kilda 7.7 (49) in Alice Springs

Melbourne jumped out to a 3 goal lead by quarter-time and just held on as the Saints fought their way back. Petracca was the star with 4 goals including a late snap for goal to ice the game while Steven May held Max King to just 3 possessions. For the Saints Jack Steele was fantastic with 26 disposals, 8 clearances and 1 goal as he continued his break-out season.

Match Preview:

How long since the Saints and Demons have faced each other while undefeated? I know it’s only round 2, but both teams would be elated to start a season 2 and 0!

Despite both teams winning last week, the Saints performance was more impressive overcoming the Giants on the road. Melbourne weren’t overly convincing defeating a very young Fremantle at the MCG and they will need to lift to defeat the improving St Kilda.

With the Saints game-style suiting the new rules and the fast deck at Marvel Stadium, they should be able to overcome Melbourne comfortably.

Thommo watch:

St Kilda – Jack Steele was so impressive in the first half last week that he copped the Coniglio tag which limited his scoring slightly. With Melbourne not really tagging, he should pump out a handy score this week. Hunter Clarke looks ready for a break-out season and Thomas Highmore appears to be a handy rookie for our benches.

Melbourne – It’s a plethora of SC riches at Melbourne with Oliver, Petracca, May, Gawn and James Jordon all suiting up today. Most eyes will be on Max Gawn after a slow start last week as he comes up against a very inexperienced Hunter.

Thommo’s Tip: Saints by 18 points.

  1. Captain Gawn or Oliver
    TU- Gawn
    TD-Oliver

Was burnt by Gawny last week. Grundy was a lot better this round, can we hope Gawn will be too?

  2. I know this will be unpopular, but if Steele and Gawn can both fail SC wise, I’d be most happy! I have neither…

    1. You need to have a non playing player on the field as Captain. Hopefully you have one player not named this week, whose team hasn’t played yet, so you move them on to the field, put Captain on them, & make sure you have an emergency in that position or else you cop a donut. Then your player with the VC score becomes your Captain score.

  3. Sitting watching the scores on Fan Footy and the match … and watching Jordan winning balls, contested possessions etc in the last few minutes … watching against his name with 2, 3, 4 8 coming up … and his score had not changed once over the last few minutes … stayed right on 75 the whole time … he’s just been upped to 81 after I wrote this … but by the strict letter of the law and scoring, he should have gone up a lot more … and the “official stats” will ensure that his score equates to stats …

Scaling in this game is a joke. For me, this would be a far better product if they scored every player for what they did and earned or lost, and removed the maximum points (3300 per game) as well … it is so open to bias, and once they score heavily early, players get nothing – it just gets me every year

Should also say, similar for Gawn – won several hitouts and taps etc, to his own players and even the commentators saying to advantage, in the last few minutes and yet his score barely moved from 132 to 135

    1. I think it’s a ‘stage of the Game’ issue. I may be wrong but I think they weight points more heavily when the result is in the balance. This is especially evident in a blowout when fourth quarter points don’t earn as much.

I don’t mind weighting purely based on 3300 total points but there seems to be too much subjectiveness (subjectivity) at play.

    2. I too used to wonder WTF as well Macca. The info I obtained was that the “pluses and minuses” are Fantasy scores only.
…..and the reasoning behind the 3300, well, that was explained as a general total to “even the games scoring due to different grounds and game conditions”.
But as far as the judgment scoring for SC….WTF!?!?!?!?!?
