Game Chat – West Coast v Essendon

Written by Motts on June 20 2019

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Thursday June 20, 6.10pm

What it means for West Coast: The loss to Sydney before the bye – the Eagles’ fourth by at least seven goals – was concerning but West Coast can reclaim its one-win buffer inside the top four with victory over the Dons.

What it means for Essendon: Two-straight wins has revived the season and another upset of West Coast at Optus Stadium, after last year’s stunning ambush, could lift the Bombers back inside the eight for the first time since round five.

The stat: Essendon stunned West Coast at home in round 14 last year, booting the first eight goals in a 28-point win. The Eagles dominated inside 50s (59-45) but kicked 6.16.

The match-up: Josh Kennedy v Michael Hurley
Kennedy (27 goals) and sidekick Jack Darling (26) were both sidelined when the Bombers ambushed the Eagles 12 months ago. How Hurley and Cale Hooker handle the star West Coast forwards will have a major bearing on the contest.

It’s a big week for: John Worsfold
The West Coast legend has coached against his former club three times for two wins, and after facing serious scrutiny in the first half of the season another victory over the Eagles in Perth would see the Bombers surging towards finals.

Big call: West Coast tagger Mark Hutchings to make a beeline for Zach Merrett at the first bounce and hold the Bombers star to fewer than 20 disposals.

Mottsy’s Tip: Eagles by 30 points

  1. I am biased, but my bombers have the game to upset eagles…especially fwd with tippa and orrrrrrrrrrrazio with space to work in. Eagles turn it up when challenged….four losses by 7 goas nd more.

      1. Honestly mate I rekcon the BLUE’S was even more worse than us! Maybe now that there looking for a new coach they should give him another go.

Or they can have Buck’s and the PIE’S can have him back!

Gaff getting screwed in the scoring … think Bombers need to shift Clarke to Sheed!!

    1. for that matter Merrett is too … but hey, what’s new?? He’s gets nailed every week from CD!!

  8. if the bombers dont get their sh$ite together, this game is going to blow out and Yeo will get his BE … not sure which outcome will hurt me the most …

    4

    1
    1. a decent amount??? …

His BE is -87 … roughly $500 for each point – thus if he gets say 63 he should make about $75K – give or take a few thousand …

  9. Hurley’s playing with the hand brake on since quarter time. Scored under 20 across the last two quarters!

  10. Can someone smart than me explain why Hurn has 23 points on Clarke?

Same possies, Clark more contested, slightly worse DE, less kicks but 6 tackles to Hurns 0.

    6

    1. don’t get me started n CD scoring ….

that said, Hurn is 100% perfect thus far (apparently) and has more kicks … which score higher than handballs … if kicks miss the mark, then they lose more points … Clarke’s DE is only 81% – Hurn may also have taken some intercept marks or 1% that score more … haven’t watched it all – watching the Aussies as well …

      1. Likewise Macca. Warner putting on a show…better than watching a poorly skilled, over-umpired game out west.

  11. Well, this is a depressing night thus far … GD’s Eagles spanking my Bombers and to make matters worse, Bombers ensuring that Yeo won’t lose any money FFS!!

      1. Ugh. I know, I know. But he had such a good patch of form last year, thought he could replicate it. Plenty started him, only the masochists have held him fml.

        1. I was really close to starting him. And I traded him in. He was having a good patch there a while ago, I was hoping it continued.

Are you fielding more than 18? I have 19 on the field hoping darling’s score gets dropped.

    1. 91 is the top end of what hurn deserved tonight, about his mean for the rest of the year i reckon.

      1. At least Hurn will lose $30k this week and likely the same next. Good for those of us who decided he could wait!

  15. Why is Clarke’s DT to supercoach ratio so poor? He’s gone at 87% DE with half his disposals being contested as well as half of them being kicks

    8

    0
    1. He’ll go down $30k and have a BE around 160 again. I’m gonna wait another week, as he’ll likely drop another $20-30k!
They have HAW next week. Not traditionally a rewarding oppo for high-scoring DEFs.

  16. Hey guys, currently facing a good problem to have but need your help nonetheless. Josh Begley scored 95 for me this week, however, I already have 6 premos on the field so I need to choose one player to omit.

    TU: Omit Worpel
    TD: Omit Heeney

    Thanks!

    1. If SYD redeploy the double-tag this week, you’d think Worpel should be benched. Heeney’s ankle/fitness might also be better for a week’s rest.
I’d go Heeney, but it’s a coin toss really. They could well both go better or worse than Begley.
      Not very helpful. Sorry
