Incident assessed:
Contact between Sydney Swans’ Lance Franklin and Carlton’s Nic Newman from the second quarter of Sunday’s match, between the Sydney Swans and Carlton was assessed. The ball is kicked towards the Sydney forward line. Newman attempts to take possession of the ball at half forward. As Newman turns front on to gain possession of the loose ball, Franklin approaches and contact is made, including high contact. It was the view of the MRO that there was insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Don’t agree with the Franklin one – i think they need to start looking at the ability to cause damage/injury and not just whether it does or not. The intent is still there and he’s still going in in a dangerous manner – whether he causes injury or concussion or not shouldn’t make a difference in the first instance. If severe injury or concussion is a result then that should just add to the original “intent” penalty. But that’s just me
I think every fan with half a brain thinks intent matters as much as, if not more than, the outcome. Unfortunately having half a brain is not a requirement of working for the AFL.
