Poll: Rowell & Ryan

Written by JimmyDee on April 12 2022

Matt Rowell and Luke Ryan have emerged as the questions this week, as the glory of their respective plus 150s fades rapidly into the background.

Today is a simple hold or punt and depending on results, Wednesday’s poll could be for the best replacements.

  1. Never started Ryan but with emerging Chapman and others looks like he’s not at scoring best. Would trade him but keep Rowell and hope he gets hands on pill more often.

  2. Got both and not feeling great about either. Can go Rowell to hewett this week. What does everyone think. Ryan to hewett feels like a sideways trade but rowell to hewett feels like an upgrade.

Tu: solid upgrade Rowell has made some cash and hewett will easily be top 6 defender for under 500k

TD: hold onto Rowell as he could finish m8 if he goes back to his other role.

    1. I have them plus the other R stain…Ridley.
SC rule 102 applies re sideways trades……all three have gone big at least once….keeping those trades in the bank for now.

  3. I’ve got Crisp, Ryan and Hewett as D1-3, with Bowey, Minge, McCartin, Gibcus and DeKoning making up the rest. Start of RD1 I had McInerney, got injured, traded to Hewett before RD2. Now thinking of getting McInerney back in for Ryan… or – trade Ryan for any other Premium Defender :

    T/U Ryan -> McInerney
    T/D Ryan -> Doc
    Comment -> any other

only used 3 trades so far, Crippa will be 4…getting McInerney back in feels kinda wasteful but I started him ahead of Hewett as his pre-season looked terrific

    1. Seeing as you have used 3 trades already I would hold and hope Ryan can bounce back. You already have 3 defenders to upgrade

    2. Stevarino ! Did the same thing myself in regards to McInnerney, only I traded him for Rowell…… yep ! one of those years.
I’m going to forgive myself for sideways trading Ryan & bring in Hewett.
had only used 3 trades at this point.
won both my league matches on the weekend , so feel luck has changed for the better.
      You are not Alone !
      Good Luck

  4. As a Rowell holder I am happy to hold. Once Dew realises that he is not allowing Rowell to be at his best by playing him as a defensive mid instead of allowing him to hunt the ball – then Rowell will be back to his high scoring best.
Not a Ryan owner but I think as a coach you will be on a bit of a rollercoaster with him this season. He will score a block of 100+’s then for no apparent reason throw in a few stinkers. Probably a trade if you can bring in a defensive keeper as it doesn’t appear as though Ryan will be one himself.

  5. I don’t own either in SC but have Ryan in my Tech team and Rowell in other formats, I would say to ride it out and hope they can bounce back. I know they have been started as keepers but they could be your final upgrade after the byes if trades permit. This being said I am always for holding premos, going to keep Whitfield

  6. A Rowell owner. He attends the CBs. He is just not capitalising even when Touk gets tagged. At this point of time he is more likely NOT to be a keeper in midfield. He is reverting to playing a non SC friendly role for whatever reason like last year when he got back. Its hold until he reaches his BE.

A non Ryan owner. His role has changed, too many sharing the pill. At 160 BE he is going to bleed money. I will side trade to a (McGovern, Hall, Crisp, Docherty, Sinclair if you dont have). Its wiser to wait one more week until the DPP are announced. Then we know you don’t trade a premo…

  7. Ditched rowell for green last week. No worries. Got his money.
If he drops in price much could mean you missing out on that uber upgrade, Oliver, Gawn, steel etc.

  8. Rowell’s BE is 68. For me he is a definite hold until it is clear he is going to lose value.

And if enough of you trade him out this week then I have no doubt he will bounce back with a big ton. So go ahead please and trade him out 😉

  9. Hey FT if you’re listening,……

Your thoughts on Noddy (NO’D) and Ryan, and how the “Ins” will effect their current output???
Thanks in anticipation of your great words.

    1. Hey Chameleon.

As much as I would love to rage trade Ryan, the truth is it’s probably better to hold. As Brad mentions below, Pierce back should allow Ryan to resume his normal role and begin finding the footy again. Last week a few early clangers put Ryan on the back foot early, and when he finally started finding it, the game was pretty much over so he wasn’t scaled well at all. He’s a reluctant hold for me.

NOD seems a pretty easy trade in. The last few weeks and his versatility should at least buy him some time in the side. His DPP and extremely low BE and the lack of quality Defensive and Midfield Rookies make him a pretty safe bet in my mind. Get on the Noddy train !

      1. Thanks for the feedback FT.
I will remove the noose from his neck and fend off the wolves.
…….but I’m still concerned about Noddy.
Too many higher income players supposedly “returning” this week, which IMO will see Noddy as the sub again…..

  10. If there are no outs in the defence of Fremantle, hold Ryan. Any outs which mean Ryan has to be a key defender, then trade him out before he bleeds too much cash. I think he is a wait for the team list to be announced, then decide.

    1. Good point xBbx.
I think Pearce is expected back this week.
Hopefully Ryan starts calling for the ball instead of directing others.

  11. The forgotten midfielder at the Suns is Noah Anderson who is developing better than Rowell. Has greatly improved since the latter half of 2021 and has an outside game that Rowell does not have.

Metres gained and score involvements this year for Anderson are excellent. Attending centre bounces and is ranked 3rd for stoppage clearances.

Pundits forget that this guy was the no. 2 pick behind Rowell.

  12. I think I will be trading both out in the coming weeks.

I want to get in at least two and hopefully all three of Miller, Petracca and Oliver in the next three weeks. Also have Preuss as a trade in target next week.

Ryan is the first domino to fall this week to NO’D to pocket 360k.

Rowell to Miller and one of Hayes/Xerri/Durdin to Preuss next week (via English/Dixon).

Berry to Petracca and a one up/one down using a trade boost to get in Oliver the week after. Hoping Luke McDonald and Daicos get M/F to open up more possibilities for the one up/one down.

    That would leave me with:
Short, Crisp, Hewett, McDonald, Chapman, Daicos
Steele, Miller, Oliver, Petracca, Parish, Neale, JHF, ??
    Grundy, Preuss
Dunkley, Trealor, Butters, English, Coniglio, ??

Then hopefully can pick up some more fallen premiums and coast the rest of the season. Definitely need to improve on my ranking.

  13. I have both and Rowell is an easy hold. Would be happy to upgrade him in a week or so but can’t see him losing cash with a 50/50 chance of a monster score that makes another quick 50-100k. Wait and see.

Ryan is a more difficult one. Once that 150 goes out this week his price will plummet, so you’re essentially resigned to holding and crossing your fingers. He career average is 19 possies, but his 150 came from 32, so it feels like the outlier. Pierce may be back, but JL has shown he uses Ryan as a Mr Fixit, which is likely to be a week-by-week issue. His saving grace is he has the last bye, so becomes an ideal upgrade.

I’ll probably hold and try to upgrade around him – maybe someone like Bowey – but I wouldn’t be surprised if his current price is his peak for the season. You could easily make a case he’s not a top 6 Def and so a trade is justified. I typically try to get my lowest averaging players out first, so I’ll likely hold and move on a few in the 70-80 range, and just cop the $$$ loss.

Would love to ditch him though.

  14. Has anyone got any thoughts on Alex Witherden from West Coast, very super coach friendly role and is an efficient ball user, looking to take over hurns role i think. Was looking at a potential replacements for Ryan, dont think i will sideways but could upgrade a rookie to him as a massive POD.

TU- risky, but good POD and has upside
    TD- stay away
