Poll: Joe Daniher

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on August 31 2020

CaptOblivious has asked whether Joe Daniher is worth considering after his unexpected return and smackdown performance against the Hawks last weekend. He slotted three majors from six shots at goal, took 10 marks and had 13 kicks from a solid 80% TOG for 103 SC. With only four rounds to go, there’s probably not enough time nor trades to use him as a stepping stone so if you bring him in he’s likely to a be keeper.

Worth noting the Dons’ run home: in the next three weeks they come up against some of the comps strongest defensive outfits in West Coast, Geelong and Port Adelaide and then close out the H&A season against the Dees, in which they’ll probably both be fighting for that last spot in the eight.

Is Joe Daniher worth a look?

  1. It’s a no from me, as a bombers supporter rapt to see Joe back and played freely last week, but still gives too many free kicks away which hurts his SC scoring.

  2. I’d be more mindful of his likely minutes played than ability to score. Essendon’s medical staff have taken a fairly hands-on approach to managing the return of Draper from a long term injury, so I’d imagine Joey would be the same.

That said, Stewart, who returned from the same injury as Daniher, has played each game since coming back. Joey’s games are arguably more aligned with rucking in terms of physical exertion than Stewart’s.

Big upside, but hard to recommend with the ifs and buts. Love that he’s back.

  3. Looking at their upcoming opponents, I don’t have a lot of confidence for him

Looking at Jezza Cameron seems more appealing for who they have to play. Blues Crows Dees Saints. Not the strongest of opponents and is priced at 328k may give another player to think about

    1. Thinking of holding off on trades and giving him one week to prove himself. Only concern is Finlayson is still to possibly come back and I’m not sure structure wise how a Himmelberg, Finlayson, Riccardi and Cameron forward line works…

      1. Well they both scored a tonne last round, so it shows they both have the capabilities.
I’ve just had a rule of never have a KPP in my team. They might score big every once and a while, but same odds to score a 20-30

  4. That is a lot of food for thought. Like many, I’m happy just to see him on the park again, though he may replace Scott Gumbleton as the player who was most robbed of a full football career (if you don’t count John Coleman). Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of Essendon players, through no fault of their own and disregarding the ugly business last decade, have a disproportionate number of players that don’t get to fulfill their potential (usually injury)? I’ve no love for EFC but they’ve had some mighty handy players that deserve respect.

Ha, that’s me doing an FD waffle – to return to the point, thanks for the poll, and thanks for the advice.

  5. A huge no from me. Key position forward who will battle against many teams and will not kick enough goals to score well imo. He will not be playing against an under manned Hawthorn every week.

  6. His first half showed what happens if he isn’t hitting the scoreboard and they play West Coast,Geelong and Port in the next 3 weeks and that’s not even mentioning the fact that hes odds on to get managed at some stage, no for me.

Jeremy Cameron is the one to pick if looking for supreme value or light on cash.

  7. Finlayson should never get another game unless it’s injury enforced.

If you can afford Daniher at F7 and have no other pressing issues I would go for it. Just might snag a 120 and the loophole might win you your match. Better than relying on Seymour Skinner as a back up like I am.

    1. I had been thinking more along the lines of F6, with Riccardi F7 and finally dumping D Smith (just as he’s putting together some decent scores). Thank goodness for SCT and the wise people who frequent its hallowed pages. Smith may still become Petracca next week, but Big Joe is off the radar. A narrow escape, my sincere gratitude for the advice above.

I’m sure that list of SC Rules had something about key position players, if only I could remember it.
