Poll: Sicily

Written by Chips Ahoy! on August 17 2020

26% of all coaches have a decision to make with James Sicily, who is looking at a long stint on the sidelines. He looks set to drop almost 60K (ugh), however at ~540K should still provide plenty of options.

Who is the best option for the wounded Hawk? Break the bank on Lloyd? Chase the points with Ryan? Look for value with Williams or Hurn? Skip the byes with Mills or Ridley? DPP flex with Houston… or maybe ultra POD with Houli or Thurlow?

Who comes in for Sicily?

  1. I’m going up to Lloyd for the Uber premium. If I already had Lloyd I’d be avoiding Ryan as he’s about to head out of WA and targeting Ridley or Tom Stewart

    1. Terrible news. Just about the worst possible timing – unless Hawks make finals next year we might not see him again until 2022. Hope it at least gives him the best chance for recovery.

    2. my hawks didn’t need that
then again , with no reserves playing & no chance of finals
Clarko gets the chance to get some games into some kids & see who can play different positions
might force a couple of retirements though & to those mighty stalwarts ,
we thank you for helping hawthorn forge such a powerful era over your careers

  2. Houli is a late season defensive upgrade that i didn’t even consider. VERY cheeky idea. Love it. Not sure if i’d do it but i do love the idea.

    1. I would avoid Houli, Crisp and Maynard. They have the R16 Bye. Semi final week.

This is best 18. You will need as many Premo’s as possible on the park.

You are better off targeting a R 15 Bye player as that round wont be a Finals match.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

  3. I’m long odds to do it but I thought Blakely from Freo is starting to show some form & he’s always looked like he’d be a premium if he could stay on the park & play the right role, role looks good just poor TOG

    1. Dann.

I think he is still finding his full fitness.

Missed most of the pre season.
Returned from the break in ” Not the best shape”
This was the main thing keeping him out of the team in my mind.

Has the skill and talent to get to the next level. I’m just not sure he has the drive.

I would avoid, I would tend to avoid most Freo players Fyfe and maybe Brayshaw / Walters excluded. We have been great on our home deck but..

We are about to head back to the Q Hub. It wasn’t pretty last time.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

  4. Also..

    Those considering Ryan..

I went through his 2020 home and away record “again”

I posted in “Last Minute Q”

    I did make a slight error,including a Gabba game as home. 🙁
    Sorry.

    Revised numbers are..

    Away ave: 6 games @ 89.1

    Home ave: 5 games @ 127.2

With Ryan heading away for the rest of the season after the next Round. Now priced @ $580K

I would maybe look for better value elsewhere.

PS: Ryan owners can take some heart in his last 2 @Metricon, he scored 109 and 105. Maybe he was starting to get a feel for it?

Best of luck if you have anyone playing tonight.

  5. Taking anyone who hasn’t had the bye yet is a significant risk. They basically have to outscore their rivals by 20% to justify selection – that’s huge.

Williams or Ridley for mine, Thurlow if you like living dangerously

    1. I agree Chillo.

This year with the Bye structure. It really does make a huge difference if your focus is overall or just $ leagues.

If going for overall Rank your thinking is spot on. Why trade in anyone likely to be in your best 18/22.

If going for League wins, then the Round 15 bye doesn’t count as a H2H match.
With this in mind you are only focused on who is like likely to score the most, the other remaining rounds of the season.
With this in mind you should still avoid R14 and R16 players (pre-by) as you are looking to maximise points on field in these finals games.

With a few different approaches going around, and a few extra trades on the table. It should make for a very interesting next few weeks 🙂

    2. I had been avoing players yet to have a bye, but with the news that Rd 15 doesn’t count for league matches, I actually think that players with a Rd 15 bye are better targets than those who have already had a bye.

Reasoning is that teams with a Rd 15 bye are far less likely to rest their premiums in the weeks either side.

      1. I like your reasoning Chonkers.

Another way to look at it is to think..

Looking at the ladder there aren’t many Post Bye teams (WC *maybe? )secure enough in the top 8/4 to have the luxury of resting players. Also..

Finals bound teams are likely to get another Bye Post season / Pre Finals.

        * Hurn / Nic Nat might get a rest in a few weeks, if WC continue to win easily.

I guess there’s many ways to skin a cat!

  6. Hate to waste a trade but I think Hurn has to go. He scored ok yesterday but the ball fell into his hands early so he was 40 odd before he knew it. He rarely plays on from full back and now they will be travelling interstate I can see him punching out scores of 40-60. Plus he is looking old out there- won’t be surprised if he gets managed. If I had my time again I would’ve avoided.

  7. So my question is – who should I take now Sicily gone and I already have Ridley, Stewart and Williams. Was thinking Maynard or Lloyd but now with the byes…who knows? Haynes? Have $370,00 in the bank after trading Gawn for Nic Nat that I was going to upgrade a rookie forward to Petracca. Any advice much appreciated! Thanks in advance

    1. I’m looking at Haynes don’t like the WC match up next though, I think he’ll be cheaper than Sicily when SC opens (?)

      1. beware Haynes with Davis out – played the lockdown role last game and I imagine he will again – scoring was down because of it and only got some late increases …

          1. no that was the commentators speaking rubbish. Haynes played tall defender as a lockdown role. He basically took Davis’s place and was thus unable to play his normal loose role across the back taking intercept marks etc which is what allows him to score well.

I’m not sure who else Giants have that they would use and with Williams playing solid distribution role, I think they’ll use Haynes in that same vein again until Davis is back …

            1. Macca.

Sam Taylor is the other’ Tall’ defender the Giants are missing. He got some “mystery illness” and lost 10kg He doesn’t look like returning soon unfortunately.

              1. Good info Freo! Yeah, team lists and the status of Davis is key for the next round I think.

If Davis is not back, might as well hold off on bringing in Haynes for now… he should have a big BE and drop a tonne of cash anyway over the next two weeks with only 67 this week.

  8. Apart from the r3 debacle (there you go RIYP !!), I have missed most of the carnage this year and traded both Doch and Sic out pre their bye cause I;m in a big cash league. Doch comes back this week. …reckon he’s about due to explode.

    1. Looks like you are making good use of the 3 extra trades so you can do some luxury trades now Wighty

  9. What about Luke McDonald? Has taken Pittards role im guessing and by the looks and seems to be excelling. Could some of the roo supporters here please give me their thoughts as I havent watched mainy roo games until this round against the lions.

    1. I decided to role the dice on McDonald this week and have no regrets. I’ve only watched 1 of the past 5 North games where McDonald’s scores have exploded and he seemed to have a halfback/roaming mid role kind of like Laird.
As long as that role keeps up and he doesn’t go back to tagging I think he’s a great POD.

  11. Rampe out for the season. Could affect Mills and Lloyd’s output (doubt it affects Lloyd too much but still).
