Poll: Starter Or Upgrade – The Big Four

Written by The Salamander on March 15 2021

Jake Lloyd is coming off the back of a career-best season, and is priced to match. With a couple of minor injury concerns surrounding him, Lisa is wondering whether you’re planning on starting him, or if you hope to get him in later at a (hopefully) lower price.

Jake Lloyd (DEF, $656,400)

Chameleon, meanwhile, wants to know how many of you are starting Neale and Gawn, who are coming off similar career-best years to Lloyd.

Lachie Neale (MID, $721,800)

Max Gawn (RUC, $751,400)

Finally, having already covered three of the big four, we might as well ask the same question about the fourth member:

Brodie Grundy (RUC, $648,200)

Starting all four will set you back a fair bit. If you’re doing so, where are you saving money elsewhere? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Gawn and Grundy are starters for sure and wanting to start Lloyd and Neale too, but a struggle with team selection and rookies, makes it too tough to add them. Plenty of others can cover them, whereas it is hard to cover those 2 ruckman.
Luke Jackson causes doubt for Gawn and gives me concern, but am still backing him

  2. Lloyd: May not start Round 1, and has lots of alternate options. Reluctant pass.
Neale: Like Lloyd, has lots of alternate options, and you’re hoping he’ll average 125 which is a high standard but he is such a lovely captaincy option and FD’s point on them is well made. He’s in and out of my side.

Grawndy: Depends on how much stock you put in the “rucks will suffer” new rule interpretations. If so, then Grundy’s midfielder-esque status and cheaper price tag gives him the edge I’d say.

But who is R2 then if not a Grawndy combo? Might be worth a poll.

  3. Gawn’s best ever season ‘20 (in a reduced min format) plus potential forward minutes put him out of my team.

Rolling with Neale (think he will also drop a bit similar to Gawn) and Grundy (should pick up his average in ‘21).

Draper in R2 – not that I’m feeling great about it…

  4. Shouldn’t Danger have a poll, or is he locked for everyone?

I only have Grundy. I feel the others will likely come back a bit in numbers, still probably top 3 in their possies, but worth a gamble.

  5. I want to start with all of them, but you really can’t, so Lloyd, between the injury scare, the average far outweighing his career average, and being the worst of the real world players, has to unfortunately go.

  6. I saw everyone get burned last year not starting with grundy and Gawn and was happy all year knowing I started them. With no marshall theres no one else I confidently have there instead of them so locking them in. Lloyd was someone I didnt bring in till much later last year and he hurt me every week I didnt have him, If hes passed fit to play which I expect he will I will also be starting him.

The one conundrum I face is Neale, he was great for me last year getting him in early on but for that price I’m not sure im on board with him. Hes 50/50 for me and I am personally leaning towards my boy Satan Oliver. Will be a cointoss come thursday night!

In that retrospect I apologise I haven’t been very helpful with all the discussions but am very excited to get amongst in when it starts! Thursday night cant come soon enough!

  7. I heard today that Neale will spend some time off half back. Not sure if this is a positive or negative for his SC count?

  8. Great poll,
In my humble opinion, and that is all it is an opinion
Max, the biggest lock-captain, by a fair margin, resting forward bonus to being rested on the pine.
Neal , great player but tag-able probs has to go in
Lloyd, seagull that preys on getting fed the loose chip- still tag-able
Grundy, accumulator of loose ball ruck rover style that doesnt mark overhead much, and hit outs are limited when opposition read his set up-was sliding 2020
Danger, only one has his measure for best player in the comp and he has and will continue to bring it when-ever he crosses the boundary. always a lock.
Great topic and good luck to all for the season

  9. I’m kind of considering a 3 rookie approach of Flynn, Hunter and Meek. Very uncomfortable, makes sense but so against the grain its just simply weird. They are 3 rookies we know will get to round 3,4 at least. By then I’m hoping I’ll establish which one is the real deal and retain them for longer. Start to trade in Gawn or Grundy example later on around round 7-8. Bring in a Primo ruckman thats flying perhaps with a break out season and hedge my bets on price drops or injuries to Gawn or Grundy.. Effectivey this frees up cash to invest elsewhere and gives me a chnace to do more research across the board with rookies. In my experiments I’m still coming out with same predictions 1850-1950 so no big impacts there. However I have never had faith in my rookies selected getting to round 4 with large upside or price increases. Example: Whats point in having a Gulden when we dont know if they will get past 3-4 rounds. We could be stuck with donuts and no traction for price increases. At least we can predict these 3 ruck rookies will average 60 minimum and all play to round 4-5 at minimum.

    1. Hunter/Meek I don’t back to be playing in rd 3-4. This is due to Darcy looking due rd 2 for Freo with Treacy out for 3 due to suspension, which could be changed due to their appeal.
Marshall is not far away and with Ryder unpredictable causes doubt for Hunter.
The only one I am confident in to play many games is Flynn, so that would have to make him R2 in this structure and hope you get the others still playing for that 2nd option. I wouldn’t back them in for a constant 2 choices each week
