Rare Gems – Round 17

Written by Freo Tragic on July 7 2022

Hello all. Can we finally field a full Premium team this week ? I don’t know about you, but with English riding the pine since the Byes I can’t wait to get all my best players on field. ( I hope I didn’t just jinx myself ! ) I guess some of you are Stewart owners and are holding. Probably not the worst play if your low on trades, and Leagues are your main focus. If you are lucky enough to have held Daicos as cover, holding is certainly the play. I’m sure a few of you have Hall or a Rich and maybe looking at moving them on, even if their injuries may not be too long term. Maybe you’re still trying to finish your team, and need some value ?  let’s see if I can find you a Rare Gem or two, to help ease your trade headaches, and get you a point of difference come finals.

DEFENDERS

Coaches pet Cat ?

Tom Atkins (GEE, $454.300, 100.0, 0.5% ) Tom is Geelong through and through. A former reserves captain. He has worked very hard for everything he has achieved at AFL level. He’s a coaches favourite, and has been rewarded with midfield time since the Byes.Tom has been attending almost 50% of CBA’s and with O Connor and Bews back, holding down the small defender roles, the hope is he can continue in the mids. The main flags I see are Selwood returning and Dangers TOG increasing. He is also yet to really show a major ceiling with a high score of only 121 in round 16 last year. He has been very consistent in his new role with scores of 103, 99 and 98. Geelong have a great run home and some juicy SC finals match ups. Atkins is an uber POD, owned by less than 1000 coaches, if he can lift that ceiling a little, maybe he can do enough to hold down D6 in your side ?

Steven May ( MEL, $379.100, 63, 2.2% )  At the beginning of the year May was unstoppable. He had a monopoly on kick-ins and was valued at $550K in round 7. A series of unfortunate events ( probably not the greatest guy to go drinking with ) have found him as a very  “Fallen” premium. Can he return to his former glory ? last weeks 108 certainly makes it possible. The fact he’s so underpriced may help you look past his obvious flaws. If you’re really struggling for cash he could be your D6, if your really flush with cash, and need to cover Stewart, he’s a possible D7. It must be said with last weeks carnage, he has had hamstring trouble before. For those looking at a sideways cash grab from a highly durable Short.. You have been warned !

If you have the money.. Bailey Dale ( WBD, $545.200, 110.3, 5.0% ) I have been plugging this guy all year. He is still largely ignored, and just showed some great ceiling with Daniel out. He’s now 5th for defenders in overall points. Get him in !

MIDFIELDERS:

I warned you..

Patrick Dangerfield ($425.900, 76.7. 1.3% ) I’ve been playing SC for quite awhile, and Danger for this price is unheard of. Geelong have taken no chances with Danger, giving him extra time off, to get him cherry ripe before finally rolling him out last week. He came back and scored 98 from only 62% game time. Yes it was against North, but if you saw the way he moved in that very first play, he was back, big time ! To be honest, getting him in with so many solid midfielders to choose from, is still a risky play. The Cats have some very easy kills coming home, so there’s a chance he goes huge is a few games. Theres also a chance he gets another rest. If he had Forward status he would be the most traded in player this week, even as a pure mid, at this low low price, he maybe worth the risk. Are you feeling lucky ?

RUCKS:

Good to go..

Nic Natanui ( WC,$584.500, 111.3, 1.0% ) The best points per minute ruck by a mile, but can we trust Nic Nat ? He did play 22 games last year and I know Gunboat Diplomacy is looking at him. I guess if you love the man, and are mainly playing SC for the fun of it , you could look at the big fella. For me, the big price tag and his time on ground issues make him a pretty hard sell. He is the key to any possible improvement for West Coast this year, so it wouldn’t surprise me is he went really well. I really hope he does, as he’s one of the best players in comp to watch. Best of luck GD !

FORWARDS:

Where’s my bread ?

Liam Baker (DEF) ( RIC, $507.500, 105.3, 3.4% ) Richmonds new “Mr Fix it” Baker has been everywhere this year. When Short was moved to the midfield  (don’t get me started) Baker thrived at HB. Now with Cotchin down and Dusty hamstrung , Baker has been thrown in the middle, and he doesn’t seem to mind one bit. A real no nonsense footballer that probably deserves to be leading Richmonds B&F, Baker is rumoured to be asking for a heap more money somewhere else. There’s no bigger motivation for a Baker than playing for a heap of dough. Sorry, not sorry ! I fully expect Liam to finish the year strongly, don’t you ?

I love to read your comments , but I may not be able to respond to until after midday. Please do let me know if theres any other low owned players you’re looking at, and I will respond as soon as I can.

Thanks for reading..

Cheers FT.

  1. Yes, great read FT. Certainly got me thinking, although the worthiness of that thinking might be questioned.

    Cripps – Dangerfield
    Hobbs – May (via DPP)

Danger with a great run home, particularly at the Cattery. And May surely pulls his head in and knuckles down after all the dramas.

TU – Interesting. So crazy it just might work.
TD – You’ve completely lost it. This season has finally taken its toll.

  2. A tremendous write up once again, FT.

Flagged my two ins this week: May and Nic Nat.

Only thing holding me back from fully committing is the Gawn v Nic Nat debate. Will put it to Table For Two later today!

  3. Not too many Sc relevant player likely to get DPP additions unfortunately.

They judge their time in position over all their games played with a minimum of 8 games played for this time around.

Players like Himmelberg spent too many weeks forward to be considered.

Rowan Marshall was tracking nicely for Forward status but that week Ryder missed has meant its now highly unlikely.

    1. Bugger. I was hoping that one would get over the line like a Mitchell, Boak, Darcy, Danger, Berry or even a Walsh. Wishful thinking? Do you know where to find the information to see what % each player has played in each position?

      1. Hey J The Phantom has a list on the Herald Sun Website. It’s only for subscribers so I can’t currently access it. If you sub, maybe check it out.

Someone will post it on Twitter soon so I will let you know when they do.

        1. Legend, Thanks for your help! I would love to know where we can check that info ourselves rather than wait for an article to come out.

        2. Himmelburg has spent 36% of time in defence and is almost certain to get DPP – source herald Sun – I am a subscriber.

Rowan Marshall is the other big name who might get DPP forward status, currently 32.9% going into R17.

Brody Hough is another who might get DPP.
