      1. As a GC Supporter…
I can with confidence say that Jarod Witts will almost certainly not break out this season.

        Trust me.

        2

      2. Surely you’re trolling mate. Goldy is the only ruck at North and came home like a steam train last season. Training really well too. Clown.

          1. This comment above wasn’t me.

Get your own stupid name, it took me ages to come up with mine 😉

I think Goldie was poor early last year due to personal problems. He then excelled post byes.

I have had him in my side at times this year. I just feel Grundy and Gawn are so far ahead of the rest I really want to start them both.
These new 6/6/6 starting rules may actually see G&G streak further ahead of the pack.

          1. Wrong Max?

I think you make some great points about Goldie.

If it happens that Max drops off with the addition of Preuss in the JLT.
I won’t have any problem starting Goldie. In fact it suits my Bye structure better and saves me $$$$.

  2. Cheers AllSaints , I have had trouble deciding who to take out of Lloyd and Sicily I have changed it a hundred times, also what midfield structure to go with 4 Premos and Miles or 5 premos and Miles.

    1. Exactly the same conundrum. It’s gonna depend on decent MID rookies for me. If there are enough DECENT looking ones then I may be happy with 4+ Miles, but then we’ll need a min. 3 on field who are going to smash it. Potentially Walsh, Bewley and Gibbons. Not sold on Walsh yet and CAR haven’t committed to Gibbons either (would almost prefer HAW to pick him up with their PSSP, now Titch is out).

Have prepared for both eventualities but almost prefer 4+ as it affords me Lloyd at D1 and I’m getting a v strong feeling that to NOT have him there is gonna cost us!

I’m sure that’ll all change next week! What I will say is that it is prudent to have your top 10 locked in for now in preparation for any eventuality, ie
      2 – 4+Miles – 1 – 2

Time is on our side now, so am not gonna get hung up on it. Just reading the news and comments on here:)

      1. You’re right with the numbers, 4+ Miles helps to allow a small amount of freedom across all positions. The rookies are all place holders until JLT and for many, we don’t know for sure until RND 1 teams.

One thing to remember is the top 5 drafted rookies over time average more, then top 10 and outside round one draft choices it really is luck and research together. Tim Kelly may have had the best first year average we will see for a long time.

For me Walsh, Rozee, Sam Collins, Setterfield are worth the price

    2. As regard to the Sicily or Laird dilemma. He way I see it, who is more likely to loose it in a game and throw up a stinker.
I’m leaving Sicily out until he does that and hopefully pick him up at a discount.

      1

      2
  3. Yeah Definitely a wait and see on Walsh he’s pretty expensive I would probably rather get the mature aged rookies in whether or not they get games remains to be seen!

    3

    1
    1. Yep, if he goes nuts your pretty far infront. If he tanks he’s will still be up there. I’m also going menegola over heeney, hoping he can keep infront of him by a couple of points.

      2

      4
      1. Gawn i imagine will spend most time in ruck with extended rest periods up forward with Preuss doing the opposite of that.

Managed well by Melbourne, there may be little ave change by Gawn.

        3

  4. In regards to my previous team without a 5th mid.

Def -lloyd, Simpson, witherden, williams-wilkie,burges. (Mclennan, wigg)

Mid-cripps, fyfe, martin, Merritt, zorko-hatley, mchenry, shipley. (stocker, constable, bewley)

    Ruc-grundy,gawn. (sweet)

Fwd-danger, menegola, wingard-setterfield, woodcock, Parker. (cavara, walker)

    Keeping my 14 starting guns.
    Kelly for fyfe(byes)
    Laird for simpson(cash)
Dropped mclean(dont know what to expect)
    Downgraded macrae(cash)
Added zorko(huge upside, not a mid pricer) Sold on witherden breaking out and menegola outscoring heeney.
Almost everyone is durable, worth the gamble or has big upside or accommodating byes (zorko, witherden, Williams, wingard, fyfe)

  5. V7 is pretty similar to V6 but I have swapped around some premos (Laird, Blakely, Merrett OUT, Sicily, Witherden, Beams IN).

DEF: Sicily, Witherden, Williams, Collins*, Wilkie, Hore (Koschitzke, Wigg)

MID: Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Martin, Beams, Miles, Constable, Valente (Hind, Bewley, Watson)

    RUC: Grundy, Martin (Fort)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Wingard, Greene*, Setterfield, Corbett (Burgess, Cavarra)

    $66,200 in the bank.

*Notes – If Greene doesn’t get up for round one or doesn’t seem 100% fit I will trade him down to a rookie (most likely Parker STK) and upgrade Collins to Connor Blakely. Since this would leave me with about $30k ITB I would most likely swap Stef Martin to Goldstein or Nank leaving around $60k.

Comment your thoughts if you’d like but this is just my way to get all my thoughts out instead of freaking out the boss by talking to myself. Cheers

    1

    3
    1. Wouldn’t be trading out Collins; one of the strongest rookies in DEF this year. Hore won’t play so I’d be losing him for Blakely. If it’s a cash issue you’ll need to find it elsewhere but easily worth it.

      4

  6. Been tinkering around and am happy to sit on this team for now.

DEF: Whitfield, Witherden, Williams, Roberton, Clark, Hore (Answerth, Wigg)

MID: Cripps, Fyfe, Neale, Mrouch, Zerrett, Libba, B Smith, Constable (Bewley, Hind, Valente)

    RUC: Grundy, Goldy (Sweet)

FWD: Danger, Heeney, Wingard, Greene, Setterfield, Burgess (Cavarra, Parker)

    3k in the kitty.

    Feel free to comment!

      1. Cheers mate. Yeah, I tend to get sucked in by juicy looking midpricers, it’s one of the more fun parts of SC! Thanks for the feedback.

        1

        1
  7. Def: Whitfield, Blakely, Witherdon, Williams, Collins, Scrimshaw (Wilkie, McClennan)

Mid: Macrae, Cripps, Fyfe, Dusty, Zerrett, Miles, Setterfield, Hately (Stocker, Bewley, Watson)

    Ruck: Grundy, Witts (Fort)

Forward: Danger, Heeney, Worpel, Rankine, Parker, Corbett (McAdam, Cavarra)

    Too many mid-prices?
Worpel will be replaced by Greene if he is available.
Witts will be upgraded to the best available Ruckman at the byes. Expect him to average around 95. Downgrading Goldy to Witts allowed me to bring in Witherdon.
    Appreciate any advice…cheers M.

      1. Ugh… Lemme retype that.
Way too many GC players in there. GC players should come with a warning, “Don’t BUY us! We Suck!”

        1. L G C S.

For mine the GCS actually started last year quite well.

They were forced out of their home ground for quite a number of week ,but still managed to get most of their wins early.

For mine, I’m expecting Stuey Dew to have them primed, and I wouldn’t be shocked if they start out reasonably well again.
As a young side they will probably drop off post byes.
But by then most of our Gold Coast rookies should be fattened up and upgraded to Premos.

I have no problem starting GCS rookie players if there given the right roles.

          4

          0
          1. I just want too add.
Most of the rookies come from these teams. Any one else see a problem here?

St Kilda , GCS and Freo all play Sunday in round one.

We won’t really know which bench players will be staring until Friday arvo.

            Carlton play Thursday night.

Who do we lock in ( from Carlton) not knowing who’s going to play for the other sides on Sunday?

            3

            0
            1. It’s a massive potential headache … I panicked last year for this exact reason and started Garlett!! I think worst-case you HAVE to allow for another loophole and NOT panic start CAR players, if you don’t like them. I’m looking at bottom-priced MID/FWDs just in case.
Given Grundy tends to play early, you only need to find a loophole option who plays AFTER him or one of your other C options to be safe.
For that reason, I don’t currently have. Loophole planned/in place, and will take the risk.
Let’s face it, there are enough decent heads on here to know/plan that way. I think.
Just had my belated Xmas lunch so might be waffling 😉

            2. I think on js you just have to lock in Walsh, then correct it later if needed otherwise you will spend all your coin on remaining rookies for the round and not be able to get him in if he goes omera style.

              1. Great point TOF, but I’m hoping there’ll be enough mature-aged rookies that I don’t need Walsh. History says there will be 2-3 premium-priced ($125k+) rookies maximum who deliver top 20 rookie returns. He’ll need to average 82+ to be in that bracket. That’s a huge call. I respect the fact that this year is considered the best draft calibre in some 15 years, but even those premium-priced exceptional performers tend to be mature-aged or have had a taste in the past (eg Ben Jacobs last year and likely Sam Collins this).
I think you’d be better off with $100k in the bank just in case he turns out to be a freak.
That said, we can surmise all we want but until the JLT it’s nothing but conjecture. It will take a min. 80 both games for me to consider him, given the premos will simply be going through the motions and therefore affording him points.

At this stage Collins & Setterfield (if they start) will be the only premium-priced rookies I pick, if team drops allow it.

Rant over. As I say, it’s no more than conjecture at this point. We’ll get a better idea nearer the time, but I’m a sucker for stats and trends. Especially long-term ones:)

    Cheers.

    1. CMB

We won’t really know until we see how teams set up in the JLT.

Most of the teams above list a lot of the promising mature aged rookies and most of the “value picks.” usually injury discounted Premos from past years.

As for” Bang for your Buck” players start with Danger forward.

      Everybody else is.

    1. Hey FT
I’m going Grundy and Gawn and Miles at M5. This also gives me three uber locks in DEF & FWD lines, with Roberton and one of Himmelberg/Higgins at D4 and F4 respectively.
I feel a lot more relaxed now 😉

      6

      0
        1. Better to do it now and take a screenshot, cos it means a helluva lot of jigging around on other lines to get it right.
Thanks TOF. You’ve been bangin on about it for ages and while Goldy might deliver, all other options are fraught with danger.
Apart from planning for byes being my biggest lesson last year, SCT also taught me that you simply MUST HAVE a min. of 12 absolute set & forgets. If you can then add a Roberton, Miles and say Wingard to that, you’re gonna be ok.
I finished last year with only 9 of the so-called premos that I started with.

          4

          0
          1. Well thanks to you too. Your quest for value players made me dig a little deeper beneath the gloss of uber premiums so find some hopefully serious potential. But I still cant bring myself to run miles in my mid. He will end up being in my team all year due to more pressing needs over and over again

            3

            0
      1. Ive gone Kreuzer all the way up to Gawn now by taking out Robbie Gray for a rookie and then upgrading a defensive rookie to Roberton. Means im only Danger, Heeney and Wingard in the forward but it just feels so much safer having Grundy and Gawn set and forget.

        4

  14. here is my latest version. Decided to lock and load my rucks as every year I end of doing trades. Also when with some expensive rookies that I can then downgrade prior to round 3 if I miss out on some must haves?

    DEF:
Lloyd, Blakely, Williams, Williamson, Collins, Wigg (Burgess, Hore)

    MID
Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, Gaff, Martin, Walsh, Stocker,Bewley (Foley, Constable, Hind)

    RUC:
    Grundy, Gawn (Meek)

    FWD:
Dangerfield, Heeney, D Smith, Setterfield, Rankine, Parker (Cavarra, McAdam)

    1

    1
    1. Good looking team, but I wouldn’t start Gaff as he will still be suspended going into this season and will miss 2 or 3 games if memory serves me correct.

      3

      0
        1. He is but it won’t be of a concern, only a sprained ankle. The club has come out and said he’ll be ready to go for round 1.

Other than Merrett, Yeo would be a super sneaky POD to start your season with, but you’d have to have more guts than me to start him.

If you can afford it, Lachie Neale at $607k will be worth a look, super consistent scorer and will be the number 1 man at Brisbane.

Matt Crouch is also worth a gander, super underpriced due to an injury affected season last year, but still averaged 101 for the year. Could get back to his 2017 average of 111 if he’s fully fit.

          6

          0
  15. Version 56.97637

    DEF: J. Lloyd, J. Sicily, L. Whitfield, Z. Williams, S. Collins, J. McLennan (M. Hore, H. Wigg)

    MID: P. Cripps, C. Oliver, L. Neale, Z. Merrett, A. Miles, S. Walsh, M. Gibbons*, L. Stocker (C. Constable, B. Bewley, N. Hind)

    RUCK: B. Grundy, T. Goldstein (D. Fort)

    FWD: P. Dangerfield, D. Smith, I. Heeney, W. Setterfield, S. McAdam, I. Hill (M. Parker, B. Cavarra)

I’ve traded a mid premo down to Walsh in order to act out my new gameplan.

Basically, what’s killed me in the past has been picking too many speculative/breakout players, having one or two of them fire, but having the rest be useless and stuck in my team for too long. So I’ve decided to limit myself to 3 speculative picks in the team (Williams, Miles, Goldstein) and then make sure I have a 3-4-1-3 structure of set and forget guns.

For the first time all pre-season, I’ve got Lloyd in my team. I could never budget him in effectively, and thought he was waaaaaay overpriced, but after the new kick-in rules were announced and I looked at the way he finished last season, I had to budget him in some how.

I’ve also added Devon Smith, who I feel apart from Danger and Heeney is the safest forward premo available. However, if Gray spends most of JLT in the midfield, then I’m swapping Smith to him.

If I can’t afford to run 4+1 in the midfield due to a rookie shortage, I’ll either go Lloyd to Blakely to afford some more expensive rookies, or Lloyd to Williamson to upgrade a rookie to a 5th mid premo.

So let us know what you think!

    1. How can you go Michael Gibbons when he is not even on a team yet,

This is one i hoped that would get through to the keeper without many find out about 🙁

      1. Cheers,

i just put Crisp in, i did have williams but that meant i would of had all 3 premo defenders on the same bye.

my other option was maybe Harris Andrews instead of Crisp.

        1

        0
        1. Witherden might be a better R13 starter after a relatively disappointing 2018. Crisp had a great year last year and while I have no doubt he’s solid, if Pendlebury is running one behind the contest (likely) I don’t see much improvement. Witherden is likely gonna benefit from the new kick-in rules and should make points/cash regardless.
With Gardiner now out for a sustained period, I feel Andrews will consequently be restricted to a key-position role for the early part of 2019 at least. Just feel there are plenty of other options available with less uncertainty.

Still plenty of time and JLT to make decisions. So don’t stress and … Good luck

          2

  17. First team for the year. I’m happy with the balance at the moment:

B – Laird, Whitfield*, Williams, Collins, Scrimshaw, wilkie (Hore, Wigg)
M – Macrae, Cripps, Kelly, Neale*, Beams*, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Valente, Hind, Bewley)
    R – Grundy, Goldy* (Bines)
F – Danger, Heeney, Gray*, Setterfield, McAdam, Cavarra (Hill, Parker)

    20k bank

The * are the players I’m not 100% on.

    Backline options =
    Lloyd (expensive but worth it)
    Witherden (kick out rules)
    Crisp (POD)
    Blakely (breakout)

    Mids =
    Zerrett (see how he recovers)
    M.Crouch (underpriced)
    Dusty (underpriced)

    Rucks =
Gawn (set & forget, but $$$)
Longer (cheap but will he be worth it)

    Fwds =
    Wingard (Titchell minutes)
    Worpel (see above, breakout pick?)
    Menengola ($$$ but safe pick)

    Would lvoe some feedback

  18. Refreshed and excited for a new year! After the catastrophe of injuries that ruined was looking to be a great season last year (Btw, anyone who witnessed when I lost my temper then, I’m reeeeeeally sorry), here to what I hope can be a top 10k ranking year.

This is what I have first up (and I’ll probably be changing this about 1000 times before the season)

    DEF – R. Laird, J. Sicily, Z. Williams, D. Roberton, J. Scrimshaw, C. Wilkie (C. Burgess, M. Hore)
    MID – J. Macrae, N. Fyfe, D. Martin, Z. Merrett, J. Dunkley, A. Miles, L. Stocker, C. Constable (B. Bewley, T. Sparrow, N. Hind)
    RUC – M. Gawn, M. Kreuzer* (D. Fort)
    FWD – P. Dangerfield, D. Smith, I. Heeney, I. Rankine, W. Setterfield, M. Parker (S. McAdam, B. Cavarra)

So my defense was pretty basic and similar to most people’s backline. Laird was a no brainer for me. D2 was a choice of either Sicily or Whitfield. If both of them are able to play a full (or near full season), I thought Sicily would have more to offer. Willams I think will be averaging 90-odd again. Roberton has just started doing full-contact training, so if all goes well with his ticker, I think he’ll be a definite starter come first round. He’ll probably be someone I’ll upgrade later on once he reaches his peak price.

Midfielders, Macrae was the first player I had locked in my team. With Mitchell gone, I think he’s the next best. Fyfe I think will get more of the ball again now without Neale there. Martin and Merrett I think will rise back in form and will be $600k by the year’s end. My POD is Dunkley, who I was VERY surprised that he has only been picked by 2%. After making a move to the midfield in Rd. 14 last year, he averaged 115 from then until the last round. If last year was any indication, I think we’ll be seeing Dunkley having even more time in that role. With Miles, I hope he can score 100s on a consistent basis. That way I have a good reason to save a trade. I didn’t go with Walsh like a lot of people did, I ended up pick Stocker as the cheaper option.

Rucks, Gawn was my other main lock. Other pick was Kreuzer, because $432k isn’t pretty decent. However, I don’t know how is progress is with his fitness with his ticker. If he isn’t ready for round 1, I’ll either downgrade someone and get Goldstein, or take a big risk with hoping Longer can do well (now that Hickey isn’t at St Kilda anymore).

Forwards, I actually had no clue Danger was a MID/FWD this year XD So when I saw that, I didn’t hesitate to put him there. Smith and Heeney I was very happy with in my forward line last year, I’m happy to put them there first up again.
Very unpopular opinion here (and I might get a couple of thumbs down based solely on this comment), I’m not going to bother touching Wingard with a 10ft pole, unless he can really show that he can take his game to the next level, and consistently at that.
So many people have hyped him up in the last few years in becoming a top-10 forward player, and he never quite played up to that expectation. I personally don’t think he’s consistent enough for me to have him as a F3. He may prove me wrong this year, but based of what’s happened in recent years, I’m not going to risk it. I’d honestly be more comfortable with even picking Toby Greene over him.

I was happy that I was able to fit both Setterfield and Rankine. I think both with be getting heaps of game time this year.

    That my team anyway.

If anyone has any word of critique they want to share, please feel free to do so!

    2. A good looking team, my only suggestion would be to move Dunkley out of your mids and into your fwd line. I’m also bullish about him breaking out (depending on where bevo plays him)

        Nice team and detailed analysis.

Depending on where they line up round 1
I would be considering Rozee over Rankine.
Both will be future champs, but I feel Rozee may get a better chance to score playing back for Port.
I’m just not sure how often the ball will be getting into Gold Coasts forward line.
Also you can choose Rozee forward and have the option to move him back at some stage with his D/F DPP.

        Food for thought anyway.

    3. Wow. Nice detailed analysis. Agree with a lot of your points, inevitably not on your Wingard assessment, and also your rationale on Dunkley. With Wingard, I’m not certain he’s gonna be a predominant mid, but with Titch out the Hawks are really short on mids, and I reckon Clarko’s gonna have to play him there whether he likes it or not. He’s a very talented midfielder as he showed last season, and with Roughy, Breust and Gunston still going strong I don’t reckon they need a 4th 40+ goal option. On Dunkley, a lot of people with SC Premium were jumping on him before SC actually launched, but then they remembered that Libba was gonna return. And that Bevo was an extremely SC-unfriendly coach with his rotating mid-fwds. Dunkley started off his career as a forward, and while he has to get more mid time based on his performance last season, the rotation at the Dogs is just too many players for me to comfortably pick him. Add Libba and his lack of ability to play any position except inside mid and Dunkley becomes a very speculative pick. If you think he’ll keep on as he did last season, back your gut, but for me he’s a no no.

    1. I think Hanley’s best days are behind him. Maybe just monitor JLT to see who pops up around a similar price. Dylan Roberton is a similar price and might get a few kick in’s at the saints

    1. I saw an interesting tweet from fantasy freako

between rounds 12-21 last year Whitfield averaged 30.1 disposals and witherden averaged 25.6 disposals. Doesn’t always translate to points, but it plays a part.

williams was obviously injured and I’m not sure what Ryan averaged. JLT could reveal more but I’d go with the first two. Just my opinion but.

      1

      1
      1. I’m leaning towards it, if most of Luke Ryan’s kick out’s are possessions now it’s an extra few points a game going by his play on percentage. Lol too many questions and scenarios in defence.

Still not sure with the ruck. Would like to get gawn in. Is martin a good back up pick otherwise?

Am i too thin in the mids? Gone a more value line up of undervalued players imo

Tom lynch i think will have a good year getting plenty more opportunity for goals. But is he too risky at f4?

If Dylan Roberton is looking like a steal I will trade out Blakely and use the bank to trade Wingard to Dunkley (only if Wingard looks like playing mainly forward) and upgrade to some more expensive rookies of the Collins, Logue, Williamson variety.

    1. Overstacked Forward Line for me. If your going with Grawndy as your rucks then I feel you need a well balanced team surrounding them. Remember, the midfield is the engine room of the team. That’s where the majority of your points should be coming from.

      1

      3
      1. The midfield is also where most of the best cash cows come from. Any of his four main forwards are likely to score as well as similarly priced midfielders so it makes sense to make use of the higher scoring rookies in the midfield over forward rookies.

        3

        1
        1. Wow you’re right. 15/24 teams that have been posted on here have Miles..
I wonder why?? An unproven player getting a new chance at a new club I understand why some might be tempted. But he’s at GC. How much are we really expecting Miles to score here??

          1

          0
          1. Why I think Miles is worth it (for now)

He has averaged 90+ in the past.( When given a chance in the midfield. He should get this at GCS,). He has a breakeven of 62. At his current price he only needs to average 15/20 points a week more than a rookie.(to make the same cash)
He also.. ( and this is the crucial part) Is very durable. hardly missing a game.

You could chose Hanners or Libba. Both have higher ceilings. At least you know Miles is likely to stay on the park long enough to make some cash and score consistently.

I feel If your gonna gamble on a midpriced Mid, Miles is your safest bet.

Rookies will change over the course of the JTL series.
I’m going 4 premo in forwards bexause most years I struggle with the rookies there on making money.
4 mid premiums plus Miles. Fyfe is scary to start with and start without, so staying there for now. Has a great early round draw.
Dunkley maybe to Gray? but like to see his role first.
    Maybe Robertson/Whitfield to Witherden/Williams?

    Thoughts Guys/Gals?

  29. Here’s an early one for the thumbs

I can’t decide between these two Premo combinations.

    T/U Gawn R2 and Crisp D2

    T/D Goldie R2 and Lloyd D1.

    5

    12
      1. Yep.

I really want to start. Gawn and Grundy now.

Since Titch went down I wanted another Uber Premo.

But I keep coming back to Lloyd. ( new kick in rules)

The only way I can see to fit them both in is to drop M Crouch down to Walsh. This would mean Miles at M5 and three rookies on field in my Mids. Not something I really want to do, as the midfield is where most of your points are generated.

At least I have plenty of time to work it out.

I just started a league if you wanted to join. 198594.

Get on allsaints 8 spots left.

How good is finally having SC open.

        1. Don’t put in Lloyd because of the new kick in rules too risky. Put him in because your sold he will be number 1 overall and maintain his age anyway. If he does score more from kick ins great!

          1

          0
          1. The new kick in rules just reminded me why I liked lloyd from the start. I actually can see him improving, his last 5 games last year are very interesting reading.
he had a low score of 114 (R20) and high of 149 (R23).

For the same reasons we should all start Danger, and would all like to start Grundy and Gawn. I feel Lloyd will be the number one scorer on his line.
I would really like to start him if funds allow after rookie selection. I also realise that defence is where most of the value picks maybe picked up, and it might be better to spend the big bucks somewhere else.

Another day another SC puzzle to solve.

    RUCK: B Grundy, J Witts (J Sweet)

    FWD: P Dangerfield, I Heeney, C Wingard, I Rankine, J Corbett, B Woodcock (M Parker, B Cavarra)

Going to leave out Miles, thinking Witts can improve this year. Would welcome comments.

    1. Botswana

      Nice side.

If I was to make one change I would look at getting in at least one value mid ( Merrett / Dusty / M Crouch ).

You have all the most expensive midfielders and its unlikely they will all maintain their lofty starting prices.
If you need funds to get in the best rookie talent. Or you want to upgrade Witts ? I would have a plan to downgrade say Oliver ( has had offseason surgery to both shoulders, and has not started contact work yet,) to maybe Merrett or Dusty. This should free up nearly $100k . Enough to turn Witts into Goldie or Stef Martin , or some of you basement rookies into better scoring ones.

Overall a solid structure and a good side.

    1. I’ve chosen basically the same defence, watching jlt very closely for the kick in rule. Judging by that either keep witherden and Williams, or go Whitfield and a rookie.

      0

      0
          1. I like Whitfield over laird in 2019 for a these reasons.

            1. laird tends to handball a lot and generally needs high stats to record his best scores. Will Brodie Smiths return mean Laird gets less of the pill ?

            2. Whitfield likes to run and kick the ball long. I feel this means he won’t need such high stats to still score reasonably well.

            3. With Shiel and Scully gone and Williams back in defence. Whitfield is probably the first in line to get more midfield minutes. I’m not sure laird will spend much time in the middle for the Crows this year.

            4. The new 6/6/6 starting positions should advantage the best outside endurance runners. Whitfield ticks all these boxes and more.

            5. I just think GWS will win more games this year, so there will be slightly more points to go around overall.

Basically I think Whitfield is former No1 draft pick, with (potentially) a new role. And right at the age to be hitting his prime. I’m not sure I can say the same about Laird.

I have started laird with confidence the last two years.

This year I feel a changing of the guard.

            1. I think a popularity vote will decide for me. If I have to put one in by combining Williams and witherden.

            2. I couldn’t have put it better if I tried. Nice work FT.
With the new rules I think they’ll be looking to/for Smith and Milera’s presence from kick-ins this year. Laird reads the play so well that I still think he’s top3/4 when the ball comes inside their defensive 50, but I just think Lloyd and Whitfield will put a fair margin between themselves and the chasing pack.

              1

              0
              1. Agree completely allsaints.( whats happening to us)

The more I think about it lloyd and Whitfield are the only defenders capable of averaging 110+ this year.
But…….. ( just like Grundy and Gawn) can I afford to start them both ?

                2

                0
                1. Well now you have me really concerned and I will admit my defence is the hardest to nail down so thumbs up down.

Lloyd, Sicily, witherden, Williams, wilkie and Burgess.

                  Lloyd, Sicily, Whitfield, (roberton/rozie)wilkie, burges.

First option gives me 14 possible keepers. Second gives me 13 genuine keepers.
But having 14 keepers means less trades through the year and can sideways later on.
                  I hate defence this year.

                  0

                  2
                  1. Agreed 100%. Def is giving me a headache this year. I feel you gotta start 4 keepers in defence this year because of the new kick out rule (Lloyd, Sicily, Ryan), 6/6/6 potentially helping elite runners (Whitfield) and more mid minutes (Blakely).
Whilst he is still good value I’m leaning more & more away from Zach Williams as I feel 95 won’t be enough in defence this year as I can see at least 6 players averaging more than 100. Although that being said if I only have 400k left over for 1 player in my team it will most likely be Williams that gets the nod.

  32. Hey, fellas.

Love the site. Excellent content, attention to detail, research and advice. Thoughts on my team with $1,600 left?

DEF: Lloyd, Sicily, Hurn, Roberton, Collins, Scrimshaw (Watson, Wigg)

MID: Macrae, Cripps, Oliver, Kelly, Miles, Setterfield, Constable, Hind (Stocker, Bewley, Valente)

    RUCK: Grundy, Gawn (Fort)

FWD: Dangerfield, Heeney, Wingard, McAdam, Corbett, Cavarra (Mosquito, Parker)

Obviously the rookies are not locks until the JLT and R1 teamsheets and I won’t follow through with the Roberton experiement unless he performs well in the JLT and is fit for R1; not taking him would allow me to bring in either Simpson or Laird.

    Cheers.

  33. Hey guys, just my first shot at my team this year, looking for the cheaper keepers here. So in hindsight will only need 7 more premos to finish my team off.
Def: Sicily, Hurley, Ryan, Webster, Hore, Wigg (McLennan, Watson)
Mid: Fyfe, Selwood, Beams, Sloane, Zorko, Setterfield, Stocker, Bewley (Constable, Valente, Wicks)

    1. Some nice P.O.D picks, but I can’t help but think you still need a BIG, consistent premo scorer in the midfield. That said, it’s nice to be able to start 15 keepers pretty much.

      1

    2. Have to agree with GD.

Whilst I’ve no doubt most of them have proven themselves elite in the past, I fear you could have as few as five keepers (worst-case). Some may deliver but feel that you have way too many risky picks to be confident.

That said, it’s your team. No risk, no reward!
      Good luck

    1. On the watchlist, but a HUGE risk.

If he can consistently deliver the sort of output he did in his last game for the Swans (elim final v GWS), then you’d be able to trade him out after 7games having made c.$170k.

The big IF, is can he play 7games and deliver?!?

You know that feeling when you buy something cheap from the discount shop, and it looks all nice and seems to do what you want it to do,and then when you get it home it breaks.then you realise its a piece of crap ,and you shouldn’t have bothered in the first place.

That piece of crap is Dan Hannebery 2019.

I have actually met the guy and he seems like a good bloke.

I was just trying to make point about his durability.

Maybe all that fearless bash and crash that was such a big feature of his early game has come back home to roost.

I honestly hope he can stay on the park ,and contribute to St Kilda’s season.

I still won’t be picking him in my SC side anytime soon.

    1. Zac williams GWS $407 800.

Averaged 93.9 in 2017 (showed breakout signs with a high score of 149) before an serious ankle injury kept him out all last year.

      Anthony Miles GCS $342 000

In his third year played 22 games ( 2015 ) averaged 97.5 when given an chance to play midfield.
Somehow he then got lost / pushed out of the midfield at the Tigers, only playing 19 games in 2016 for a 89 ave. Then 5 games in 2017 ( 70.6) and only one game last year, where he managed a 90.

I don’t have the numbers but I believe he maintained a pretty heathy record at VFL level and hardly missed a game.

Both I consider great “Value”and are in my side at the moment.

        1. I think peeps are giving you the thumbs down as there are likely gonna be a number of mature-aged, cheaper rookies in the FWD line who will also deliver you more points. That’s a WIN-WIN opportunity:)

    1. I don’t get people’s fascination with Scrimshaw. What is the basis for so many people selecting him as an on-field R1 rookie?

Whilst he was a high draft pick back in 2016, he struggled to get a game at Gold Coast. He didn’t set the world on fire with the 4 games he played in 2017.
Gold Coast had no interest in retaining him, and Scrimshaw himself said there was little interest from most Vic clubs.
He has spent most of his time in the NEAFL, hardly a battle hard comp like the VFL. I’d expect the Hawks, as they are want to do, will run him through the VFL before considering him first up.

      What am I missing?

      1. Lazza.

I’m thinking with Burton gone to Port.
There maybe a spot open up in defence for Hawthorn.
I think folks are just throwing names around because they really have no idea who will really play where.

By putting in a mature aged guy priced at $149K , its easy to trade him down to say a Wilkie type $123k, and also not that much more to turn him into a Williamson/ Collins type $195K

I really feel he is just a seat warmer, until we know more.

    (Bewley, Valente, E.Smith)

  39. Think this is now getting close…still some mature age rookies to pick up after JLT.

Whitfield, Williams, Blakely, Wigg, Wilkie, Roberton, Hore, Rookie

Miles, Oliver, Cripps, Martin, Merrett, Neale Foley, Libba, Bewley, Stocker, Tobe Watson for c loop

Goldy, Naismith, Fort (cats didn’t select a 203cm mature age ruck for no reason….been very poor in ruck in recent years)

Heeney, Wingard, D Smith, Danger, Cavarra, McAdam Kreuger, Rookie

Bank is $165k for either a roberton upgrade if he doesn’t make it, or a Walsh type rookie if they rock it in first two rounds. Will look to pick up Gawn or Gawn after their byes which I did successfully last year.

  40. Alright, version 7,187 is a go!

    DEF: J. Lloyd, L. Whitfield, C. Blakely, Z. Williams, S. Collins, J. McLennan (M. Hore, H. Wigg)

    MID: P. Cripps, C. Oliver, E. Yeo, Z. Merrett, A. Miles, S. Walsh, M. Gibbons*, L. Stocker (C. Constable, B. Bewley, N. Hind)

    RUCK: B. Grundy, M. Gawn (D. Fort)

    FWD: P. Dangerfield, D. Smith, I. Heeney, W. Setterfield, S. McAdam, I. Hill (M. Parker, B. Cavarra)

$42k in the bank to use on rookies if need be.

I only made 3 changes but I feel they’re all pretty significant.

First, I went Sicily to Blakley to free up some cash so I could to my next trade.

Next, I upgraded Goldy to Gawn. I feel as if Gawn is a pretty safe pick, even with Preuss potentially playing, and even if his average drops 5-10 points he’ll still average in the 120ppg range, which is best case scenario for Goldy. Additionally, if it is clear early on that Pruess is killing his scores, he’s at such a price that a simple corrective trade is all that’s needed to trade him to another premo that has started off well, maybe even Goldy.

Finally, I’ve gone Neale down to Yeo for a few reasons. First, Neale doesn’t have a HUGE ceiling, so I don’t think he’ll reach a price like a Cripps/Titch/Dangerfield where it’s pretty much impossible to get him in and you have to pray for a stinker to ruin his B/E. As for Yeo, he’ll be a super POD (sorry Chillo!) Who I believe will be close to a top 10 mid this year. As pointed out in the Eagles review by Matteo, without that horrific game where he scored 27, his average would have been 111, good enough for 12th overall and 9th among mids. I believe Yeo can carry on the tradition of premiums who prove they can hang with the big boys in the middle once losing DPP status, along with Merrett, Taylor Adams, Macrae, etc. etc.

Anyway, let us know what you think!

    1. Looks great Ben. I think you, FT and I have spent FAR TOO LONG on here in the off-season and have collectively drawn the same conclusions?!?
You’re premos, bar one, are EXACTLY the same as mine!! It may come down to a rookie play-off. 🙂
Massive respect for all your time and effort in the off-season mate. Has sated my thirst for SC 2019 while waiting for stuff to really get going, so thank you again.
FT too. But I’ll write a separate comment for him.

As a Pom and it pains me to say it, am loving watching the debutant Richardson bowl. Admittedly a very helpful strip but he’s looking good … unlucky not to have 3/4.
Good signs. You need all the positives you can get 😉

    2. Wow! Excellent team; 13 premos + Miles. Can’t fault it, Ben.

Also, allsaints, have you posted any iteration of your team? Curious to see what it looks like.

Nice to have you on board.

              1. Cheers, finally worked up the courage to start posting. Accidentally tried to log in as an admin as well lol. I don’t need an account or anything though, do I? My computer seems to have just saved my details.

      1. See Ben’s above. My ONLY differences (even incl. first rookies!) are that I have:
        Martin over Zerrett, and
        Dunkley over D.Smith
Everything else is exactly the same, given final rookies at this stage are unknown.
I may still go Goldstein and Harry Himmelberg (Fwd) over Gawn + rookie, but that will depend purely on decent FWD rookie numbers. I have left room for that. I’ll also consider Burton (PTA)/Roberton or similar at D4 if decent rookies don’t materialise there.
I basically have 11 set in stone that are bye friendly and won’t change. The rest will depend on DECENT rookie numbers and their lines.

  42. Nice work Ben.

You make a lot of good points. I agree with you on Yeo.

I think his durability and potential for improvement make him a great selection. I’m currently thinking about swapping him in for M Crouch depending if funds allow. Another thing to note about POD’s, Once they start killing it you only need an injury to any heavily owned premium. Then everyone just jumps all over your POD and “puff ” POD no more. Every POD I’ve started that actually worked out didn’t stay a POD for long.

I’m becoming more convinced every day that not starting Grundy and Gawn could come back to haunt me. You make a great point about being able to downgrade Gawn, if Pruess is taking too many points. I’m going to try to make that call on JLT form and save the trade.

Also I’m thinking if most of the good rookies end up in the midfield. It would be smart to start with 3 rookies on field and 5 Premos. For me this puts Miles position in my team in serious doubt.

I just cant see myself going only 4 Premo’s and Miles + 3 rookies. this means you effectively need to upgrade half your midfield. This is also the most expensive line to do it.( along with the Ruck, but you have that covered)
Fallen Premo’s in defence or forward can often get picked for a $100k cheaper than midfield ones.

If I’m going to start 3 rookies in my midfield, I want to make sure the 5 premos I start are certain keepers. That means no Miles in my book.

I’m not sold on Blakey yet, but you have the funds to turn him into Witherden or another of the promising defenders.

Overall a very strong team. Hard to fault at all really.

    1. Jason.

Maybe try to use the space bar, and return button to spread your team out a bit. Its really hard to read.

I also think Menegola and Setterfield in the midfield, is probably 1 too many DPP’s.

  44. D – Sicily, Whitfield, Witherden, Williams, Wilkie, Hore (Burgess, McLennan)

M – Macrae, Fyfe, Neale, Yeo, Dusty, S Walsh, Bewley, Hind (Stocker, Constable, Atley)

    R – Grundy, Goldstein (Bines)

F – Danger, Heeney, Wingard, Setterfield, McAdam, Cavarra (Corbett, Parker)

Only 4 k left so if there’s no 102k rookie that comes up I’ll be going Macrae to Cripps or Dusty to Zerrett to give me a bit more flexibility in case of injury. This is all dependent on rookies but in the early stages it looks like we are more blessed with mature aged forward rookies than other positions.

  45. Reckon SC should be like betting on a Winx race….take one gun out from each line then pick a side. Would avoid the similarity of a lot of teams as discussed above.

So, no Laird, Cripps, Grundy, Danger could be picked for instance.

    1. Heres my first go since SC opened.

      Dashing Donkeys 2019

      Lloyd / Whitfield / Williams / Williamson* / Collins / Wilkie.
      ( Burgess, Wigg )

      Cripps / Neale / Yeo / M.Crouch / Merrett / Walsh* / Stocker / Atley.
      ( Bewley, Hind, Carter )

      Grundy / Gawn ( Fort)

      Danger / Smith / Heeney / Rozee */ Setterfield / Cavarra.
      ( Parker,Langlands )

      28K left over.

I have put in nearly all the most expensive rookies likely to play, And tried to balance my bench rookies to not include all basement guys.I am hopeful a few of those cheaper guys show up, allowing me to downgrade a couple of the pricier guys and then, upgrade one of the * players. Which one, is totally dependent on the strength of the rookie talent on that line.

Will still be keeping a close eye on Miles and Roberton. With the view to somehow fitting them in, if they are firing in the JLT.

Well thats it, tear it to bits.

      1. Surprisingly close tho’ are MIDs look quite different!
Just wanna say what a hugely positive role/impact you’ve had the last couple of months. So much sense and little else. Massive help for me and I have no doubt everyone else on this wonderful site.
We’ve analysed, pontificated, scrutinised and strategised … and yet until we know who the rookies are come Rd1, our final teams are unknown. At least we are best prepared for EVERY eventuality … and I can’t thank you enough for that.
Can’t wait for it all to kick off. As Yoda said:
“Do or do not do … there is no try!”
        Thanks FT. Legend mate.

        1. ah shucks.

          I’m slightly lost for words.

When I first visited this site I was so green, I didn’t even bother trying to comment. I watched a heap of footy and thought knowing a fair bit about the game would instantly turn me into a SC gun. How wrong I was.

Slowly with the help of guys like Hutta and Father Dougal ,I learn’t the ways of choosing the best Cash Cows with the best JS. and scoring power. Then MJ taught me the finer art of finding those bargain Fallen Premiums.

Schwartz, Motts, Thommo, Chillo, H H , Macca, Mateo, Nateo,Shaggy, ( there’s countless more) and more recently Adam, Ben and your good self allsaints. ( Your extensive research and want to absorb and change based on it ,has not gone unnoticed)

You have all taught me everything I currently know about this great game. I now feel ,at least confident enough to give my 2 cents worth, and try to help a few others.

It’s really the least I can do, to pay back this great site for all the awesome information and friendly banter that it provides.

Living in Sydney its really hard to find anyone willing to talk AFL let alone SC.

Thanks to again to everyone for helping me get my footy fix.

          Bring on 2019.

    1. Have to agree with TOF. All looks great apart from Kreuzer. I’d go Lycett if you wanna go that low in price … which you might. Your other lines look rock solid to me (just keep an eye on Roberton, I feel he may have relinquished the role to Jimmy Webster).

  47. I think im pretty settled with this team.
only a few slight adjustments from the last.

    – Got rid of Crisp and brought in Witherden.
    – Scrimshaw out for Collins.
    – Oliver turned into Neale.

  49. From what I’ve heard stocker and Stetterfield won’t be playing until about 4-6 rounds in, just with setters coming back off his knee he needs a bit more time for practice and stocker being young. Just think Charlie Curnow, Zac Fisher and Harry Mackay played like six games between them in their first year.
    Cheers.
