    Tossing up between
    Rozee and Ziebell
    Martin and Dunkely
    Mills and Lloyd
    And Rowell in or out
    Plus a hundred other combos
It’s enough to do your head in.
    Don’t be gentle
    I can take it.:)

    1. Love how deep you’ve gone in your MID, would probably be worth getting Lloyd in your DEF. Maybe free up some cash getting Ziebell or Impey up FWD for Rozee. If any premo MIDs had to get the boot I’d go Steele. I don’t doubt he’ll be in the discussion for top 10 but he’s pretty pricy compared to Titch who I think is a great POD.

      Best of luck!

        1. That would be the one I would chop too. but he won’t pay for Lloyd.

If you feel Lloyd will fall (which is fair enough) you could go Mitchell to Ryan, via Laird if you want the same structure.

I’m sure that Lloyd will fall, but not much – $50-75k maybe. Certainly not enough to justify a trade, but so long as you are replacing him with a top 6 defender it’s much the same.

    2. After reading reports from respective club websites I don’t have confidence in Jones, Gould or Wehr being in consideration for round 1. Whispers at hawks are that Kozi is well in front of DGB so that’s 1 to replace your other 3
Lloyd instead of Mills if you like the phrase ‘Better the devil that you know than the devil that you don’t’. If you turn a couple of high priced rookies into cheapies you can probably start both of Lloyd and Mills at the expense of Milera

I don’t know really just killing time anybody’s guess is just as good as mine. 🙂

      1. If Gould, Wehr and Jones unlikely for R1, is there any word on who else rookie wise will/might play apart from Kozi?

        Highmore for example?

        1. Dear SG Ninjas,

          Because your request appears to be outside the grounds of a Sledgers League enquirey, I will be happy to assist in the most appropriate manner;
          (Note how I’m typing with my finger pointed to show etiquette);
ATM I think Gould will play, and I have him, Laurie, Kozi and Cox as my cheapest rookies.
Don’t get too concerned before the preseason games, as coaches (the real ones) are not even sure themselves yet!

          1. Thanks for the appropriately polite response Chameleon – to be honest, I don’t know what I’m doing either but having some of the same rookies as you at the moment really worries me cause I don’t reckon you know what what you’re doing either!!!

      2. Kosi will play forward and is a certain starter in mine. Given the losses of players I think DGB is a pretty good bet still, as are Gould and Wehr. of them I would have the most doubts on Gould or Jones.

Jones looks a beast but Ports 22 is pretty darn hard to push into for mine, and I can’t see both Berman and Jones PLUS Georgiades going into the 22.

    3. I’d suggest downgrading one of Steele, Titch or Oliver as I don’t think it’s wise to dump that much cash this early. Those players are bound to have one game and drop throughout the season so imo you’re better off starting with some value now and looking for the big fellas later on.

    Thoughts on this lineup?

Im risking without neale and gawn but..
    1. I dont believe neale will be as far ahead of the midfield brigade this year to validate coughing up 720k 1st round, not that i dont think he will have a good year.. but not a 5-10 pt difference per game.
    2. Im rating the cash gen from preuss and having an extra premo start in the mids above picking gawn.

Am i right or horribly wrong?

    1

    13
    1. You’re banking on Neale to not do something that he’s done two years on the trot. No one in SC history has started season like his 2019 and 2020 campaigns. I feel you’re going to fall way behind the curve if you skimp out on both of the best SC players (Gawn and Neale). Just choose one, spend the cash and you won’t have to worry about them again.

      6

      0
      1. Can he do it 3 years in a row? By now other teams must be looking to target him more and shut him down to a certain extent.
Hes going to be top 3 mid no doubt about it but there could be value in not soaking up his price tag from the beginning.
That being said when Round 1 comes around im sure I will have both Neale and Gawn in my team it is hard to leave either of them out knowing the scores I could miss out on.

        1. The injury is a concern but there’s still time.

But choosing a team based on no missed preseason work is not a dumb move.

          0

          0
    2. I can understand the temptation of not starting Neale and Gawn. I’ve gne without Gawn but I do have Neale. My issue is what you’ve done with the cash. You should be fitting at least 13 keepers in your side without these two, but you only have 12 and some of those are suspect to be top 8-10 in their lines of have question marks on their roles this year.

By missing both Neale AND Gawn your captaincy options each week are significantly decreased too.

      1

      0
    3. Thats four trades needed to get them in…even if they both fall to $600k. I’m starting Gawn and Preuss as its going to be much easier to pick up Grundy than Gawn during the season.

        1. they do matter if you pick a whole cheap bench that won’t play… or like others have done list an awesome team that doesn’t fill bench spots.

Yes, they will change. We all get that. But even if you wrote 3 x 123k that at least tells us there is a budget for them.

I’ve tried a Gawn’n’Grundy set up as well, but I think I’m set on Preuss. I think Neale, Oliver, Grundy plus the other premos on their day offer me enough VC / C options. I also think Preuss could average above 100 across any given 3-5 game stretch, as he has shown he has a good ceiling.

I also like what this does to my team on other lines. Depending on what rookies start the year, it enables me to go with 12 quality premos plus some of the higher priced rookies, or even possibly get to 13 premos if enough cheap rookies are named. It means I can bat deeper across all lines which I think will be important this year.

Not sure on Luke McDonald – heavily role dependant. May become Zac Williams.

Also potentially looking to upgrade one of Cripps, Walsh or Rowell to Zac Merrett / Josh Kelly.

Appreciate everyone’s thoughts on anything except for Preuss / Gawn because I can’t think about that anymore!

    1. Sorry, I should probably have clarified that part of the Preuss strategy has to be trying to get Gawn into your team as quickly as possible. I think Preuss and one of Impey / Ziebell / Milera to fatten quickly over the first 6-8 weeks enabling me to have Gawn traded in by Round 8. Hopefully there’s also a few price drops from Gawn as well. He will be one of my first upgrade targets.

      0

      1. Yeah, monitoring him closely. Easy downgrade to Zilliams if needed then use the cash to upgrade one of my lesser mids. I like the look of Zerrett or Tom Mitchell if he’s fit come round 1.

    1. Hi Glen. I think your structure is pretty solid, but I’d swap out Perkins and Ugle-Hagen for others. There’s some more established players and better scorers around this price point you could look at.

      1

      0
    2. I like your team, I would suggest keeping Perkins as I believe he’s going to be one of the better rookies in SC this year, AFL ready player that will slot straight into Essendons 22. Ugle Hagan on the other hand I can’t justify as Daniher is $3,000 more and only needs to kick 4 goals in one game to have a massive hike in price.

  14. What is the issue with Dusty Martin this year, he is normally one of the first selected. Notice not many on here have him in their sides, is he carrying an injury or something?? might be a good POD.

    1

    0
    1. He normally dips sub 500k at some point and is often a slow starter.

I’ve got him in mine for now, but that’s mainly due to a lack of faith in most of the forward options due to questions over injury to Heeney and so on.

Other players I am strongly considering are McDonalds x 2 (Luke & Tom), Will Kelly (good JS I reckon).
I would like to see Simpkin &/or Cunnington in my team but am wary about having to many North players.

    0

    1
    1. Howe a huge risk at his price – I would go to Luke McDonald or down to Milera and look to get another mid premo in.

I would avoid Tom McDonald – with Ben Brown and Weideman both out for the first part of the season he is going to be playing as the key forward and coming up against the best defenders. He does not score well in that role.

      4

      0
    2. Cunnington Concussion. Simpkin would make a good POD but the price is difficult.

You’re relying on a lot of midpricers.

  19. I feel like I am missing something with the popularity of Rozee this year.
I think he could be a great example of a player in no-man’s land to start a season.

    Is he (A) a stepping stone or (B) a long-term keeper?
Let’s think through each of these options.

    (A)
We want RAPID cash-gen from our stepping stones to help us move up to the end of season top 6 FWDs.
Admittedly Port do have a good draw to start the season (NM, ESS, CARL, STK in the first 6 rounds), but are we expecting a 90+ ave in that window when they will also face WCE (away) and RICH?
Maybe, but even Rozee’s hottest of hot streaks so far in his career have included or been followed by some very poor scores (9 scores under 70 in 2020, 11 scores under 70 in 2019).
Clearly if he can average 90+ for the first 6-8 weeks then he will be great value, and he could be a brilliant stepping stone to Danger or Dusty who it seems many will not start with.
If he averages any less than say 80, then many will wish they had gone with any of the cheaper other mid-pricers such as Impey, Daniher, Ziebell (although it does look like many coaches will have Rozee AND 1 or 2 of these).

    (B)
Is Rozee going to finish the season as one of our top 6 FWDs?
He would need to bump up his average by at least 25 points above his career best to crack the top 6 AVE from last year.
While all of these guys have one or more concerns, I simply do not see an argument for Rozee averaging more than Danger, Dusty, Marshall, Sidebottom or Dunkley. I could also see many coaches making very reasonable arguments that Rozee will average less than all of the following: Heeney, Hawkins, Walters, Zorko, Bolton, Wingard.

So it would seem to me that Rozee would not be in many coaches expected finished FWD lines at the end of the season after all byes and upgrades. But he also seems to be slightly overpriced to be a true and effective stepping stone based on his prior scoring history. So what function does he serve for us SC coaches?

All of this is not to say Rozee is a draft bust or a poor player or any of that. Clearly, he is an excitement machine and is great to watch. He just presents an interesting middle-ground that can make or break many coaches’ seasons. I am not even saying that I 100% will not start Rozee myself, rather that I need more convincing that he fits either (A) or (B).

    Convince me!

        1. Yeah I like the mids, but that forward line would be brave. Maybe give Steele the flick after all… at the moment I have Neale, Oliver, Cripps, Walsh and Rowell, but one of those last 3 may very well become Zerrett before Round 1…

  20. G’day, what are your thoughts on the below:

Def: Lloyd, Laird, Stewart, Jones, highmore, wehr (Laurie, Jeffrey)

Mid: neale, Oliver, macrae, McGrath, cunnington, powell, cockatoo, mead (caroll, downie, Davies)

    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (treacy)

Fwd: sidey, dunkley, Marshall, ziebell, smith, Rowe (mcreery, Saunders)

I really don’t think macrae will be impacted that much by treloar’s arrival (even if treloar wasn’t injured), I just don’t reckon he has the versatility of a few of the other dogs mids. The alternative is zerrett – keen to hear thoughts on that.
Also have quite a few rookies under $123k at the moment – might have to go macrae to zerrett anyway, if I need to find cash.
    Cheers

    1. cunnington is as tough as they come but in his best SC season ever only averaged 102. He’s 30 and coming back from his worst injury ever and it was ‘back related’. He wont be a top 20 mids and he wont escalate in price swiftly
Cripps is only 90k more than cunnington, 5 years younger and in the two years before last years horror he ave 117 and 119.

McGrath is in a similar ratings bracket to cunnington he wont be a top 20 SC midfielder. He’s a former #1 pick and been playing as a mid since mid 2018 and in those forty-two games as a mid he’s only managed to top 100 SC points 8 times with a high of 124
In Cripps last 42 games as a mid he’s only topped 100 twenty-five times topped 140 seven-times with a high of 194. Cripps is only 13k more than McGrath and only 3 years older

      3

      1. Fair call on cunnington. But very selective on your McGrath data – last year he played 14 games, including an injury impacted 29. He scored 100+ in 6 of the other 13, including 3 over 120. He also had a 98, 91 and 90, so really only went below 90 in 4 games… plus his average spiked from 73 to 95 (100 if you don’t count the 29). I’m all in on him

  21. Have a crack at this:

Def: LLoyd, Laird, McDonald, Williams, Gould, Wehr (Laurie, Highmore)
Mid: Neale, Oliver, Kelly, Cripps, Hately, Phillips, Cockatoo, Valente (Smith, Durdin, Downie)
    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (treacy)
Fwds: Dunkley, Marshall, Ziebell, Daniher, Impey, Macrae (Rowe, Spicer)

    Options im considering:
    A) Grundy and Hately
    B) Preuss and Steele
    C) Pruess and then upgrade Daniher to a premo

    1. I have a very similar team to this; 2 things I’m considering atm
      1) Is it reasonable to start all of Ziebell, Daniher and Impey?
      2) Is starting only 12 keepers enough?

      3

      1. I think 12 is the minimum

2 of the 3. Ziebell is tricky, because he will miss games, he will go up at a slower rate and his role was going to change a lot. Cunners concussion may help there, but he seems to have less upside benefit than the others.

But all in all, it depends on rookie availability. As always.

  22. Given teams will only be announced 24 hours before each game and the scramble that might occur as rookies are left out, I’m seriously thinking of a Plan B starting team which looks something like this:

D: Laird, Daniel, Williams, Milera, H Young, Highgrove (Wehr & Chugg)

M: Neale, Zerrett, Cripps, T Kelly, Rowell, Hately, Phillips, Valente (Smith, Durdin & Davies)

    R: Gawn, Preuss (Treacy)

F: Danger, Marshall, Heeney, Rozee, Macrae, Cocky (Rowe& Laurie)

Can swap Grundy for Preuss and Danger for Ziebell

Individual players preferred aside, the focus will be on on only having 5 or 6 on field rookies. Thoughts?

  23. Hi guys bit shifty on the current team but here’s what I’ve got. Any feedback is appreciated…

DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Z.Williams, Milera, DGB , L.Jones (Gould, Wehr)

MID: Neale, Oliver, Walsh, Rowell, Hately, Phillips, Powell, Cockatoo (Collier-Dawkins, Downie, A.Davies)

    RUCK: Gawn, Grundy (Treacy)

FWD: Dunkley, Marshall, Bolton, Daniher, Impey, F.Macrae (Rowe, M.Rioli)

    About 7k in the bank
Unsure about getting Sidebottom in and/or swapping Zac Williams with a more consistent defender (considering L.Mcdonald) or Witherden. All feedback is appreciated

    Cheers!

    1. Hey mate. Just my two cents worth but you probably need to get more premiums in the midfield, as that is where the real scoring is. whether that be through moving some rookies to the forward line and trading a few mid pricers like Daniher, Impey, Bolton, and hately

  26. It looks like plenty of coaches have settled on going with 3 DEF premos, with 1 mid-pricer or high-priced rookie.
To me, there looks to be 5 candidates to fill that 4th DEF spot with a price between $184-$312K. I’ve listed them below with a brief thought on each, would be interested to see where people fall on these guys.

Wayne Milera ($312K, 17% ownership) – has shown flashes of brilliance and skill off half-back, but a foot stress-fracture is a major red flag for a player who relies on his pace. Apparently slated to play more midfield this year to help cover the loss of B Crouch, but can this be true for both him and Laird?

Hayden Young ($279K, 5% ownership) – only played a handful of games last year due to an ankle injury, but looked like an excellent ball user in those games. Plenty of competition for spots down there at FREO, but you’d have to think Longmuir will lean towards Young’s talent over other mid level players like Conca and Hughes.

Orazio Fantasia ($271K FWD DPP, 9% ownership) – excitement machine who can’t stay on the field. Port has a decent record of getting injury-prone players up and running, but he has never played 20 games in a season and has missed a stint of at least 3 consecutive games in 4 straight years. No thanks.

Jordan Clark ($241K MID DPP, 8% ownership) – speed demon who went highly underrated in his rookie year, but appeared to fall out of favour last year. With the addition of Higgins and I.Smith, can we expect Clark to have any midfield role at all? I rate him as a player, but a bit skeptical of his scoring capacity for this year at least.

Denver Grainger-Barras ($184K, 30% ownership) – intercept king in his junior career who looks to have a very SC-friendly game. Sicily being out and Frawley/Stratton retiring opens a spot in the HAW backline for DGB to grab, but apparently Kosi is leading the charge to take that interceptor role during pre-season, while Damon Greaves also looked good in a couple of games last year. Clarko has shown a hesitancy to play raw rookies in the past (see Worpel early rookie year, Mitch Lewis for several years, Finn M last year), so will we see 10+ games from DGB?

What does everyone reckon. Can we go with 2 of these guys? Is the extra $$$ for Milera worth his better track record than the others? Is the $$$ saved from DGB vs the others worth the potentially lower job security?

    1. I share your concerns about Milera. Crows added Hately to fill most of the Crouch void, Laird is in there fulltime and Sloanes hand is better so I don’t see him getting much midfield time but I also don’t think that matters in fact it’s probably a bonus. Historically the crows player who runs the ball out of defence can score highly in SC. Laird is the obvious example and Brodie Smith used to get high numbers frequently before laird came along. Smith used to throw in a few real shockers though which always kept his ave in the 80’s I predict that Milera will become the new Brodie Smith

100% Agree on young he’s a long term player in their planning and has priority over short term gap fillers.

100% agree on all of the rest as well.

I hope somebody posts an alternative opinion or even just a different perspective

  27. I had Greaves last year and have him in again. Showed enough to be a regular in Hawthorn’s back 6. I also have Milera but with some concern. Has great numbers when we goes through the middle but you’d be hoping he is well and truly over his foot stress-fracture. Will definitely be looking at Clark and Young in their intraclub and practice matches and I feel Clark the pick and has more upside as he has no injury concerns.

    1. My concerns are too many players with bad injury habits who have not resumed training with the main group due to extended rehab. Of TMitch Rowell and heppell I only have confidence in Rowell firing up in round 1. At stages I’ve had all 3 in my team and gave myself heaps of reasons to justify it but then reasoning ruined the party.

Others in your team who already have a high number of missed games in relatively short careers and / or are coming back from serious injuries are Henney, Impey, Milera, Ziebell and apparently Oliver hasn’t been doing contact work because of a sore shoulder.

I like the Lloyd Williams Witherden combo, I have the same but with Laird instead of Milera. Really hoping that Witherden gets the right job and with Duggan in the middle at least until Yeo comes back I reckon that witherden is a great gamble.
Now that Whitfield is in doubt for a few a weeks Wehr is a high chance of playing but Lachie Ash and Isaac Cumming are filling the roles vacated by shaw and williams and Wehr isn’t a running machine to replace Whitfield so maybe it reduces his chances because giants might move finlayson back to add experience and give another one of their forwards a go. Preuss has hurt a shoulder already so that finlayson move back may not happen either coz they’ll need finlayson to be a ruck chopout. Who knows what will happen? Not me thats for sure

      1. Thanks for the Advice. As far as I can tell Heppell is in good shape and has been injury-free for a while. I only plan on playing him as a stepping stone. T Mitchell and Rowell I am confident in firing up, and Impey and Milera have only really had one-off injuries, not ones that reoccur. As far as Ziebell I am hoping he stays injury-free as he seems to be set for reduced time with North wanting to blood rookies. As with Heeney I’m more just hoping he stays fit cos he has great potential. As for Clayton Oliver, He looks like he’s set for a good year, and from what I’ve seen of his preseason I’m very hopeful.

Thanks for the feedback once again

    2. Your midfield premos are 4 guys with injury, one guy past it with an injury, and one guy with an uncertain role who will go down in price.

Your forward line has similar issues. And your defence. And your rucks.

Yes, there’s potential that they are all fit and their injury issues are past, if so, congratulations on winning 2021 already.

Otherwise as the old chinese proverb goes, I think you’re going to be living in “interesting times”. You’re running pretty much every risky player I can think of , bar Nat Fyfe.

The only silver lining to this is…..
When Teams give rookies a first game these days, they usually make a hoopla about it, and put it on social media. The marketing departments love a feel good Instagram story.

  31. Hi all,
I’m not going to ask you to rip it apart nor ask for any other verbal attacks. I’d just appreciate any comments or advice. With new injury reports (damn you Marshall!) this is my latest:
    D: Lloyd Laird Williams
M: Neale Steele Oliver Walsh Cripps
    R: Grawn Grundy
    F: Danger Dunkley Daniher
Rest are rookies $200000 and down
I’ve got room for a few higher priced rookies (4x @$200000) and currently $50000 itb
I’m a bit unsure about some of the premos, thinking they could be picked up cheaper, but is it better to lock in a few certs at a slightly higher price, save the trades, and focus on the rest of the team?

    Marshall

Sit on that till pre-season though, good stuff.

    Grundy, O’Brien

    1. Hey, Bob.

Personally, I prefer the 2nd team but there are a couple of issues that cut through both:

      – Whitfield’s injuried, sack him
      – Sloane just isn’t a good pick, past his prime and set to be further eclipsed by Crouch, Laird and now Hately
      – Mitchell is also injured and yet to train with the main group, so he’ll be an upgrade target not a starter
      – Monitor how Ryan goes with Hamling, Pearce and Young returning, could affect his output

Adjust some of those picks and then roll with whichever structured the pre-season, form and rookie availability point to.

      Best of luck.

    2. Hi Bob, out of the two, I prefer option 2. I agree with what GD has to say here but I would also add that not having Gawn, Lloyd or Neale severely impacts your captaincy choices. I know they are expensive but they deliver and that means double points. Good luck….M

    1. Pfff! What are you talking about? That’s a great team, Strugg!

Only objections would be starting Laird as a MID and Ziebell F3, but you’ve got 100k ITB and can always axe Duggan and reapportion the cash if you want.

I’d sit on that till pre-season, very good!

      2

      0
    2. Strugglers, this is a good team but for my input, I would ditch Duggan and one of Daniel or Stewart. They can be picked up later as there price will change little. Move Laird to defence and maybe Milera or Someone similarly priced. Pick up a genuine mid like Zerrett. Any available cash could be used to upgrade Ziebell to maybe Tom Philips. Trouble with SuperCoach is there are endless combinations. Good luck….M

  37. I don’t mind the Duggan pick, especially if the Def rookies don’t turn up. With Yeo injured and Witherden in, it seems to make a degree of sense.

My issue at his price, is there’s no massive gain. He’s the same price at Petracca started last year, so if he goes well, you’ve got 4-5 weeks to jump on before it gets too expensive (over 500k). On the flip side he pulls a Houston, and just hovers around 450-490k, not doing much.

The other concern at his price, is that you’re backing him to be a keeper, and therefore saying you think he’ll be better than one of Lloyd, Laird, Stewart, Ryan, Daniel or Ridley (or whatever your ‘Best 6’ is).

    5

    0
    1. Duggan really deserves a look.

The problem I see with him is where does he sit when Yeo is fit?

On the most recent form we can access he’s in good shape.

  38. Another reshuffle has left me with this.

DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Milera, Koschitzke, Gould (Wehr, Highmore)

MID: Neale, Oliver, Zerrett, Cripps, Rowell, Phillips, Campbell, Macrae
    (Valente, Downie, Davies)

    RUC: G G (Treacy)

FWD: Sidebottom, Dunkley, Ziebell, Daniher, Kelly, Cockatoo (Rowe, Durdin)

Biggest concern is the lack of depth in FWD line. Was thinking of cutting Milera to a rookie to get F3 up to the likes of Heeney, Bolton or Butters but am unsure. Would love to hear your thoughts!

  39. Ok, so based off the Milera or Hately answers I received (which were tied at this point in time), I’ve made two team options up and they both seem okay. Which would you pick?

TU: DEF – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Milera, Jones, Wehr (Koschitzke, Highmore)
MID – Neale, Oliver, Fyfe, Walsh, Rowell, Phillips, Macrae, Collier-Dawkins (Berry, Downie, Davies)
    RUC – Grundy, Naitanui (Treacy)
FWD – Dangerfield, Martin, Heeney, Campbell, Cockatoo, Laurie (Durdin, Rowe)

TD: DEF – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Milera, Grainger-Berras, Wehr (Chugg, Highmore)
MID – Neale, Oliver, Merrett, Cripps, Hately, Phillips, Macrae, Collier-Dawkins (Berry, Downie, Davies)
    RUC – Grundy, Naitanui (Treacy)
FWD – Dangerfield, Martin, Dunkley, Ziebell, Campbell, Cockatoo (Durdin, Laurie)

    1. Corey, I like the Nathaniel pick. I thought I was only one doing it. I am leaning towards team 2. I think it has a better forward line structure and I think Fyfe is a bit of a risk. He will be spending more time forward and may throw in the odd low score. Having said that, I can also see Cripps spending time up forward with Curnow out again for a lengthy period. So it’s a real toss-up. Good luck with it…M

      1. I have the same feelings about Cripps, and I kinda think Walsh is a much better option out of the two for the M4 position. Let’s not forget too that Walsh averaged 118 off the second half of last season, and that’s really making me lick my lips at a possible POD win right there. If Cripps does end up spending some amount of time in the forward, that could help out Walsh even more, despite Williams looking like he’ll be spending time there too (and that could take some attention away from Walsh).

Just trying to figure out the best way to change Cripps back to Walsh. The only way I can think of at the point is change DGB back to Jones at D5.

        Thanks for the advice! 🙂

  40. Can’t find where to ask this.
Going in a Keeper League for the first time, and I’ve scored Pick 1 in the draft.
Any ideas on how that should dictate strategy?
Eg a current premo like Neale, or number 1 young gun like Rowell??
Any insights from those who are in one would be much appreciated.

    1

    1. Hi Gozzie,

The first thing you need to decide is a criteria that you think is important to your selections.
Successful real life coaches have a game plan that they work their drafting too.

That’s why you have to answer your own question.

ie, Do you pick a team of youngsters that build successfully? (Promising and flexible ala The Baby Bombers) or try and buy a premiership ala Nth Melbourne in the ‘70s or, as many people will tell you, sell pizzas in Lygon St…….oops, sorry, just got a bit off track….

Anyways, it’s all about how you choose or think a game plan will work for you.
Maybe jot down a list of players in all categories and place them in order of importance to your prime objective; 25y, DPP, etc.

This, l hope, has helped get you started and good luck.

Note: No, I am not a “qualified” coach. All my success was before you had to obtain a certificate.

      2

      0
    2. Hi Gozzie,
The first player you need is your Captain. I would go for Gawn of Lachie Neale. That gives you a massive advantage on the rest of the field.
Then you make you draft list and I will include players that are not SC relevant but can dish 90-100 every week.
If you get Gawn, you should get the next better 4 mids next. If you get Neale, you need a decent ruck next etc…
Make sure you get players who are not injury prone. Donuts are bad in Draft , it locks when the first game starts and scores can be closer.
There are few draft lists around, if you cannot make your own, just copy. Someone has done the research for you.
      Hope that helps.
      Good Luck.

      1. Guys, thanks very much for the input – very helpful.
Ended up not having Pick 1 as I initially thought. Slipped to Pick 4, but pleased to get C Oliver first to cover the Capt like you said, and also happy to get Rowell, Walsh, Serong, Mills, Taranto, Worpel, Ridley, Ryan, N Anderson, Lukosious, Scrimshaw, etc. so, pretty well set up with young guns & future stars.
Weak in the Rucks (Nankervis & Flynn)- sad to just miss out on both Ladhams & Draper; and in the forwards the best I could do was S Bolton, J Steph, Higgins, Rozee, etc.
Scored H Young who got left on the shelf, when the draft window opened after 48hrs, which I was pleased with.
        Hopefully do alright.
        Thanks again.

t/u Simpkin – If you take out his injury affected scores he averages 108. Has the role and looks to have taken his performance to next level winning the clubs 2k and raps from the Skipper. Only ? is the impact of cunners but same time might reduce the attention he receives

t/d Andy Brayshaw – With Walters and Fyfe set to continue to play more time forward and an ageing Mundy, Brayshaw should continue to see an increase in CBA’s. With interchange rotations being reduced Brayshaw has elite endurance and still holds the record for the yo-yo test at u18 draft level over the likes of Walsh. Similarly to Simpkin from rounds 5 onwards going back to his expected TOG averaged 108. ? Maybe the rise of Cerra and Serong sees the points allocated elsewhere.

    My latest draft..
It locks in most of the top supercoach performers and solidifies the forward line with consistent scorers given the injury concerns in the area.
A little skinny in the mid and def but could target mid price breakouts as upgrades early when they arise? Hoping we get plenty of rookies named for R1.

  43. I’ve had to adjust the team a little with all the injuries and news coming out of the clubs. Here’s what I’m sitting on until the preseason games.

Def: Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Milera, Jones, Highmore (Wehr, Chugg)

Mid: Neale, Steele, Oliver, Cripps, Rowell, Phillips, Macrae, Downie (Cockatoo, Davies, Saunders)

    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (Treacy)

Fwd: Dangerfield, Dunkley, Zieball, Daniher, Perkins, Rowe (Durdin, Laurie)

Will pay close attention to the news surrounding Danger but if his cleared for R1 I’m locking him up. Otherwise, should be a straight swap to Sidebottom and upgrade one of the midfield rookies to Powell. Cheers

D – Lloyd, Laird, McDonald, Williams, Jones, Gould (Highmore, Wehr)
M – Neale, Macrae, Jelly, Cripps, Rowell, Phillips, Davies, Valente (Smith, Cockatoo, Durdin)
    R – Gawn, Grundy (Treacy)
F – Dunkley, Rozee, Ziebell, Impey, Campbell, F.Macrae (Rowe, Laurie)

    Moves from last team:
Stewart to McDonald – high upside as a Jake Lloyd lite, but need to see his role in the preseason
Oliver to Macrae – the shoulder injury worries me, but I could flip flop back between the two
Walsh to Cripps – Couldn’t resist the Crippa bargain
Adams to Kelly – not sold on Kelly but the upside is huge
Preuss to Gawn – enough said
Hately to a rookie – free money for Press to Gawn
Marshall to Ziebell – had to free up money for Gawn

POD I want to pick but don’t have the balls – Butters

    1. Solid team AJ.

I’m not sure why you have Danger in the Midfield ?

He has hardly had a pre season, and at that price I would prefer a durable M3.

The same goes for Heeney. I’m not sure he will make Round 1. Even if he does I’m pretty sure he will play forward and may take a while to get going. If he does I see him more as an upgrade target. I”m also already stacked with R14 Bye players.

Lastly From experience I would only pick one of Heppell and Caldwell. If one doesn’t work out you could always swap them.

I just don’t see the scoring history for Caldwell. Even in his junior days he wasn’t a huge ball winner. I think the scoring difference between him and a rookie cant be worth the $200K investment. I prefer a Heppell or Hately at that price point. they are both cheaper and likely to score more.

Daniher forward may be another option. He only needs a big score early , and he could make 100K+ by R6/7. He may be rested or injured by then, but could be side ways into a Heeney type, if he is getting going.

Best of luck what ever you decide.

      5

      1. Cheers Freo Tragic.

Danger in the MID as I really don’t like any 600k options besides Neale/Steele but I can’t afford both. Oliver, Fyfe, Kelly, Mitchell injury concerns – Dogs can’t be trusted. Maybe Petracca? Danger is also one of most durable options if you look at games missed.

Danger is a lock for top 6 FWDs which will eventually give me scope to upgrade one of Caldwell, Impey, FWD rook to a fallen MID premo.

Heeney played a full intra-club match this week and I think at 450k can’t be ignored, even if he does play as a forward.

Caldwell reminds me of Devon Smith the year he joined Essendon. Mid $350k, guaranteed midfield time, honestly can’t see him averaging less than 85.

Heppell is the one I’m not so sure on, would love to upgrade him to Taranto/Cunnington somehow.

Opting for Impey over Daniher and Ziebell, but they’re all a chance. Bit of luck will determine which is the best option long-term I think.

        1. Impey has the best cash growth potential at that price of the 3.

Move Danger forward for Caldwell and get Hately for mine.

I’ve done similar, stacked the mids with best 6 fwds and backs to replace rookies as you cash them out. It seems a viable strategy since we don’t know exactly how some of the best mids (Neale, Oliver, Titch) will go with injury and how some (eg Bont, Macrae) will go with role.

There’s also likely to be some players coming back from injury who may come back with discounts as their minutes are lower while coming back to full fitness (Treloar, Adams).

  49. I have a question. I see many teams with Milera. I started with him last year and got burned. Could someone tell me why he is relevant this year?

    2

    2
    1. Have played around with including Milera in my team but will pass. Some interesting stats:
First Year 8 games – SC Ave 79
      2017-2019 Averaged 17 games -SC Ave 58-74
      2020 – 2 games SC Ave mid 83

Will Milera stay on the park and/or be another Houston if injuries hit the Crows backline?

Different price point aside, by comparison, Heeney who seems to be dismissed by many at $450K:
First Year 14 games – SC Ave 79
2016-2019 Averaged 22 games -SC Ave mid to high 90’s
      2020 – 6 games SC Ave mid 90’s

  51. Barring injury risk, any thoughts on total points and average that Heeney or Dunkley will produce? I’m thinking Dunks might score a little better wherever he gets a gig but at 100K less, a fit Heeney looks more enticing.

  53. Dad is talking to me again so we discussed the rucks over a red wine or two last night. The Flynn boy has been declared a starter at GWS as they have no suitable rookies to call on…but there is still Mumford !!! Reckon Finlayson gets the chop out role. Putting Flynn on field at least for the first two rounds opens up all sorts of options. Downside is it will take a double trade to correct.

    1. I can understand why some might consider Flynn for R2 with the Giants’ situation, but at the same time that’s waayyy too risky. I’d definitely be more comfortable having him at R3. It might get rid of that comfort in having that safe loophole option there, but having him at R3 can be really positive. You might not play him on field much, but by the time Preuss comes in he should have reached his peak by then. And def he gets a lot of game time You can downgrade him straight to someone like Treacy then, and upgrade another one of your peaked rookies to a premo somewhere else.

Good example of this was Reilly O’Brien a couple of years ago. Myself and a lot of others had him as R3 when he had to come in for Jacobs. Didn’t play him on field apart from the bye rounds, because most of us would’ve had 2 premo ruckmen already. But when he peaked (and even better, he was averaging just under 100), I downgraded him to the cheapest ruck, ended up having an additional $400k in my cap. I think that allowed me to upgrade another rookie to (I think) was Bontempelli, Not entirely sure, so don’t back me up on that haha.

And as you said, you might be risking a double downgrade to correct if it fails, particularly when Mumford is still there. And that’s something you can’t afford to do. I’d rather take the safer option with having a sub-$600k player like O’Brien or Nic Nat at R2 than have the potential of losing a trade or two by having Flynn there.

Also, Prestia I believe may be a chance to miss Rd.1. He usually prone to having injuries in the first half of the season too, so that would be a huge risk to take. If he somehow ends up having a lucky year, he could prove to be a possible POD win.

But the biggest risk of all, and take this from someone who’s a Tigers fan, is that we’re not a Supercoach friendly side. We don’t really have many players that standout on a consistent, weekly basis. We like to share the load on standout games on different weeks. One week you might have Dusty and Short do well, the next week it could be someone like Edwards, Houli and Bolton, and the week after it’ll be Cotchin, Prestia and Lynch scoring the highest SC scores. The only players I’d trust to be consistent to any point on both a SC and a health-related basis is Dusty, Houli and Short.

Midfield looks great, but it’s looks to stacked. You could put more cash into your forward line. You can have other rookies in the mids like Valente, Collier-Dawkins and Campbell who will defintely get some game time and should all debut early. I’d upgrade Daniher to a Danger/Sidebottom/Dunkley. Daniher for me is super risky too. Hasn’t played a full season since 2017, and he is a key forward. I understand he did have a 86 average in that last full year, but that’s a BIG achievement for a big key forwards. Even if he does end up having an injury-free year, you gotta remember too that the Lions forward is stacked with played like Cameron, Hipwood, McCarthy, McStay and Rayner, and Daniher will be contending with those guys for goals. I think he’ll have weeks where he’ll absolutely struggle, and you can’t afford to have someone that inconsisent. I’d be worried he’ll only make me about $100k, whereas someone like Ziebell (who you already have), and Impey can make you around $200k.

But yeah, only having one premo in your forward line is not ideal, and has a likely potential to fail and lose you some cap money in the long run. I’d try to have 3 in there, gotta even it out across the field. Not to mention having three mid-pricers in your midfield is dangerous as well.

I do like your Gaff pick though. Consistent and definitely a great POD choice that shouldn’t fail you.

      Hopefully this all helps 🙂

      1. So why is it that a player like Daniher who has had 2 game missing injuries in his entire career (Osteitis pubis and another 1) and is in his age prime for AFL gets bagged as an injury concern but an old man like Ziebell and an injury magnet like impey don’t? You just say that Impey can easily surpass his best season ever and Ziebell will return to his best, that is what would be required for them to make 200k.
Daniher will NOT be competing with Cameron, McCarthy, Rayner, Hipwood or Mcstay for gametime. 3 of those that you mentioned are small forwards the other 2 are either still learning deep forward or entrenched as the 2nd/3rd tall. Daniher is a CHF who might play out of the goal square as a Mobile FF due to the man on the mark rule change. He is the primary marking target for the team that enters scoring zone most. Ranking Jarman over Joe as a forward for SC this year is like suggesting that hot coals might help keep your beer cold.
Brisbane have never failed to heal an injured player that other clubs gave up on and, most of Joe’s problem at Essendon was with the culture club

        2

        0
        1. Most of Joe’s problem is with Joe.

It’s a job. A very very high paying job. Even if you hate the club you put on the big boy pants and attempt to play properly for the sake of your own career.

The time to show your distaste for the club is not when you are on the field. There is meetings, trade talks, hell, even hold and expose all interview and so on to do that in.

          3

          0
    2. I’d be treating Flynn as just a nice cash booster.

As you say, it’s still two trades to replace him minimum, and I don’t know that he’ll stay their R1 if he gets monstered a few times if Mummy is fit.

Too risky for mine unless you have a swichable player.

Really now we’re scraping to players like Ladhams to fulfil that role.

      0

      0
    3. Too red and black. You have ignored better options.

Also Flynn at R2 is seriously fraught with danger. A bad game and you could see him dropped until Mummy gets injured, you are gonna have to burn mass trades or write your season off at that point. It’s brave and could pay off, but geez the odds aren’t great. Still, if you think that’s your death or glory shot, just have a plan B lined up.

Forwards WAY too thin. Sell Prestia down to a rookie, buy another forward (or swing Milera, DGB, Chapman or Young in the back via Laird) and get back to us.

Not 100% sold on both Danger and Dusty, but there aren’t many other forward premos I like. Sidebum is tempting.
I really love the Flynn R3 Treacy F8 combo too. Both should see game time this season.

The midfield is stacked with best 6 defenders and forwards to move out when rookies can be sold. I have too many doubts over too many midfielders to be picking up injury prone guys like Kelly or Fyfe, or players under injury clouds like Titch or Satan. At least this way I know that Danger and Laird will be top 6 as will likely Dunkley and stay on the field for me without a catastrophe.

    1. Hey, JJ. Good to see you around again.

You could sack Ziebell and grab Danger (if fit) in Marshall’s place, but I’d go back to the drawing board on that team as a whole – you need a 5th premo MID imo.

Maybe replace Marshall with a Heeney/Butters type, sack Ziebell and Zwilliams and then grab that 5th premo MID.

      Good luck.

      1. Haven’t been hearing much on Valente except not being in the main training group. That’s where I’d be spending the upgrade money, unless you intend him to be an early season donut who kicks in later, which may help out if Treacy plays for the first month until Taberner is fit.

    2. JJ – could consider:
Powell out, any rookie Def out
Walsh in, Impey in, Chugg in.
Or if you don’t like Chugg bring in another rookie Def but you would need Jones to be your out. Otherwise sub Laurie to Def and get a FWD rookie.

    1. Jye Simpkin or Matt Rowell basically same price who do I go for

I know everyone’s got Matt Rowell at the moment and there’s a lot of hype about him but I’m not sure I still think that’s a lot for someone at his age

Simpkin only ended up averaging 90 but his last 6 or so games were very low scoring as he was battling a bad ankle injury but before that was averaging 115 plus in pretty sure.

Another one to toss up is Coniglio I had him last year at the start and regretted it but have heard he has had a huge preseason and ready to go

      Or Walsh

Jeez I don’t know pls help

      0

      0
      1. Simpkin’s poor DE, 1:1 handball ratio and tendency to give away free kicks will count against him.

The GWS ruck situation casts doubt over all their mids.

Enough has been said about Rowell over in the other thread and the reality is no one knows.

Walsh has exposed form, Blues should improve, and a move back to longer quarters should suit his endurance.

Of those four, Walsh seems like a strong option.

        1

        0
    2. Hey, Finn.

Your structure and selections are way off, sorry. The aim is not to start as many non-rookies as possible. Starting with the selection issues:

      – Marshall is injured
      – LDU and Anderson, yes, will eventually be good MID picks but not this year. Even if they have breakout years neither of them will come close to being Top 8 MIDs and are awkwardly priced
      – Similar deal with Ash. There’s room for him to develop in GWS’ backline now, but not worth it at 320k
      – Feel like you’ve just grabbed Hunt for his price, he is not SC relevant in the slightest
      – Stephenson has been flagged for MID minutes this year but I doubt that materializes with Simpkin, Cunnington, LDU, Anderson and now Phillips roaming around. Find 100k more for Heeney, Butters, etc.

Those are the egregious picks. Personally, I’m not sold on T. Phillips, De Goey, Harmes, Ziebell or Impey just yet, but they can stay if you rate them.

Point being, there’s no need to try cram your team with these awkward, irrelevant mid pricers to keep rookies off field. You NEED rookies to generate cash.

If were you, Finn, I’d go back to the drawing board. Your premo instincts are good (Gawn, Neale, Zerrett, Lloyd, Laird), so cull the aforementioned mid-pricers and re-apportion that cash on proven premos and rookies. Again, T. Phillips, De Goey, Harmes, Ziebell and Impey are worthy of consideration, but the ones I dot pointed have to go.

      Best of luck.

Def – Lloyd, Laird, Witherden, Milera, Jones, Gould (Highmore, Wehr)

  67. In impeys 7 years long career his best year ave was 74 with only 1 score over 100, 4 scores below 60 and only 8 times passing 80

In those 7 years he has only managed to play 1 full season
In those 118 games he has scored 100+ three times
In those 118 games he scored less than 50 THIRTY-FIVE times
In those 118 games he scored less than 60 FIFTY-EIGHT times

200k+ for a very low scoring injury magnet is surely a joke

    1. I am treating Impey as a high priced rookie.
My math may be slightly out.
Impey is priced to average 29.
Impey needs to average 70 to make $150k.
I am confident that he will be playing most weeks and I don’t have same confidence in other FWD rookies.

Not much difference in price – leaning more towards Hately, not because he is the cheaper option but any time I select a GWS player, I die a little inside.

    1. Fair bit of injury risk there. Heppell and Heeney, Zac tends to miss a few games, Titch is struggling to make R1. Neale also carrying a calf injury at the moment. And nearly forgot Impey.

    1. Keep track of which rookies have done well in preseason matches (that’s what most of us are doing). Not sure whether Stocker is in best 22 at Carlton.

Williams is underpriced but will he be top 6-8 defender (points wise, not average) at the end of the season?

Will both Cripps & Walsh be top 8-12 midfielders overall?

Sidebottom will likely be top 6 forward but can you get him considerably cheaper during the season?

I would also watch very closely what role Dunkley will play next week. Macrae & Treloar didn’t play in a scratch match yesterday, in which Dunkley attended 17 out of 29 CBA’s (B.Smith – 15; Bont – 19; Libba – 23).

      2

  72. Think I might have too many mid pricers, particularly in that forward line but feels like the 3 are pretty much rookies there anyway.

    Fwd: J. Dunkley, I. Heeney, J. Ziebell, J. Daniher, J. Impey, F. Macrae (J. Rowe, J. Treacy)

Side note, a poll on which of Ziebell, Daniher or Impey people are going with would be interesting.

  73. With Flynn now a likely starter at R3 generating cash.. could we consider someone like nankervis at R2? He has a friendly fixture first 10 rounds only opposing one premo (gawn) where he could make a handful of tons and maybe some cash. At that stage Nank and Flynn could be used to upgrade to a genuine premium ruck?

    5

    2
    1. Good thoughts, on Nan, but i’d be a little concerned about his past injuries and sharing the ruck loads at Richmond.
IMO would be a nervous wait (and Gutsy) to be sweating on the right time to trade.
Good Luck if you choose it.

      1. Completely agree about the injury history.. but with soldo still recovering from knee injuries theres big potential for nank to have at least 80% of the ruck duties. Will be keeping an eye on him in practice matches for sure

    1. When is your first official trade classed as being done?
Thought it maybe after first game of round completed. This has a big impact on selecting my rookies as will not no who playing saturday or sunday until after Ric and Carlton Game is finished.

      1

      1. You can make unlimited changes until the LAST match in Rd1 starts. Obviously though, once each match starts, players from those teams are locked.

Also food for thought. Team announcements are only made 24hrs in advance. So it might be wise to play rookies who are named in earlier matches or take the risk that preferred rookies in later matches might not get named.

For example: for popular rookies whose teams play on Sunday (Philips, Powell, Jones, Highmore, Wehr etc) we won’t know for sure until Saturday evening if they are starting.

        5

    1. McInerny played every game last year, so Martin’s average when playing second fiddle to English is likely to continue around 50.

      1

      1
    2. He might not set the world on fire but he’ll put a big hole in Grundy’s ave against the Dogs. Grundy ave 171 last 3 against english but only 110 against Martin in last 3 encounters. Grundy ave was 130 in 2018&19
      R5 2019 Grundy 100 Martin 63
      R21 2018 Grundy 121 Martin 103
      R7 2018 Grundy 110 Martin 114

Martin will get a lot more early season game time than some people say and he is excellent value if you don’t like hickey

      2

      1
      1. That sounds like a reason to not pick Grundy, rather than pick Martin.

Martin would’ve been the #1 and likely sole ruckman in those games (and only ~30yo).

Even if he were to play every game, and add 30 points to his average, he won’t hit 400k, which is still a long way off Gawn or Grundy.

If English gets injured, he may be worth a look, but there’s better value at that price on other lines.

  79. From the Carlton v Essendon game today….

“While last year it may have been a consistent centre-square combination for the Blues, it looks like David Teague’s side will have plenty of numbers rolling through it in 2021. It was a starting trio of Cripps, Walsh and Williams at the feet of Marc Pittonet, but it wasn’t uncommon to see Ed Curnow, Dow, Jack Martin and Will Setterfield – among others – spend time at the coalface.”

Top heavy mids as I can’t see too much value there this year as in previous, proper guns and rooks strategy with the exception of Rowell.

Forward line with a bit of mid-price madness at the moment considering some performances in practice matches and pre-season reports on improvement in Dow especially.

    Rip it apart.

Not a difficult compare question Aces.

    1. Unsure why he wasn’t selected but coach said that he should play next game.
I would imagine that he would have to perform very well in that to be considered for round one after being overlooked today.

      3

    2. No idea, Aces. Baffling why they wouldn’t want to inject experience into their top draft picks.

There’s been no news of pre-season injury, so it can’t be that. They could be looking to play the long game and develop him in the 2s to start, but even then why wouldn’t you give him a taste in a meaningless scratch match?

Maybe they don’t think he’s ready? Maybe he’s on a development schedule like Serong last year and he’ll come in mid-season?

No concrete answer, but doesn’t bode well for him starting R1.

      3

      0
      1. He looked so skinny compared to the other players in some of the preseason photos despite him being a junior gun.

If anything, you might need to look at how a big bull like Rowell who came in so bulky and professional got injured with a potentially permanently limiting injury.

If I was North, facing getting pounded for the season as they start to rebuild, I’d be giving the smaller kids an opportunity to build in the gym, giving your more bulked up second or third year players an opportunity.

Then looking to unleash your future stars after they’ve built on their fitness base.

If you want to give your supporters hope when you’re a cellar dweller it is by having some star talent at the end of the season, rather than seeing them in slings and moonboots as your side slumps to it’s 13th straight loss.

A 5-17 season where you win the first 4 feels a lot worse than one where you win 4 of the last 4.

        just sayin’.

    3. Noble said a couple of days ago that others had performed a little better and were in front of Philips.

With North playing R1 on Sunday, and teams not coming out til Saturday night (630pm I’m assuming), it’s going to be tricky to hold two spots for the North rookies.

    1. Looks like a) Treacy a big chance of playing early b) Flynn is no 1 ruck at GWS.

I sure wouldn’t want to miss a #1 ruck at $123k, and a starting $102k dpp fwd because I had a preconcieved notion that the only viable donut is a $102k R3 Fwd/Ruc.

  83. This Team scores 2,233 in round 1 predictor if I change a few rookie & budget players to conservative realistic scores.
2230 is a good score for round 1

Harmes to 85 from 63 because he is part of main midfielders again and ave 95 in that role 2 years ago
Wehr to 55 from 22 because that’s reasonable
Rowell from 121 to 110 because that’s more realistic
Heppell from 66 to 80 realistic & conservative
Hately from 64 to 80 realistic & conservative
    Downie 22 to 60 reasonable
    Hickey 49 to 75 Reasonable
    Ziebell 48 to 80 expected
    Daniher 43 to 75 expected

    1. Many things seem to be reasonable in our own minds but unreasonable to others.

The best way to use the round 1 predictor is to convince yourself how much better a coach you are than those idiots at Champion Data when you score 200 points more than they estimated.

From that point on, it has already passed beyond it’s usefulness.

    1. Caldwell is promising being an aggressive ball magnet and is no question getting mid-time at the bombers

      4

      0
      1. Caldwell may get that midfield time, but he isn’t a ball magnet. He’s a bull like Taranto, with good speed, but he didn’t put up huge junior numbers. He’ll definitely be a gun for the Dons, but not sure his style of play is SC friendly. Being at the coal-face often translates into low DE.

        2

        0
    2. The main problem with this site is its obvious affiliation with the Essendon supporters group and as a result there are never any realistic reviews, opinions or comments on bombers players.
Caldwell would need to play a LOT better than he did against Carlton to be considered reasonable value for SC he’s as skinny as a 16 years-old-Dustin Fletcher and shouldn’t play anywhere other than wing until Dr Jim puts him on the muscle juice.
He got towelled up by Paddy Dow in the first qrtr and spent the rest of the game running 1 metere behind Walsh trying to tag him LOL hahahahahaha sad for bombers fans that got another very ave giant for 500k p/year but hilarious to the rest of the league.
He is not as good as Shiel or DSmith and both of them were a waste of cash in SC.
If you can afford Caldwell in your fwd line you should swap him for Rankine or Ziebell. If he’s in your midfield swap him for Heppell or Hately

      2

      1. A few comments in reply from an Essendon fan well known for my balanced and reasonable comments.

        1. Caldwell is not a Fletcher clone physically…he is actually a beast. I think it was Josh Kelly, or maybe Coniglio that said after he looked like leaving GWS that he was a beast, and THE young player they did not want to lose….and all that after 13 games I think it was.
        2. He is not priced at $500k..its $348k. Hilarious is not doing your research.
        3. Re Shiel and Smith…time will tell…to early to make the call.
        4. And to show my true unbiased view….I dont have Caldwell in my team. Ziebell looks more attractive at the relative prices. I do have Heppell though.

        8

        1
      1. Mills will output more as a mid.

He’ll actually play most of his games too, unlike Williams.

        That’s why you’re paying 100k more.

        4

        0
        1. Since 2019 Mills ave 99 with a 110 ceiling when playing pure Mid, Williams ave 100 with a 137 Ceiling.
Mills has played 17 more games than Williams since 2017 BUT that includes Williams missing all 22 games of 2018 (no loss to SC coaches)
To suggest that Mills will outscore williams is unresearched Mills ave less as a midfielder than he does as a defender

      1. Neither is that big a gulf to an M6 player.

Parker has missed 4 games in 8 years. His average may only be in the 105-110 range but he’s right up there on total points each year. If the swannies improve he should be up at or over the 110 mark.

He hasn’t dropped below 99 per season since his third year. Sure we’d all like 110 every season from all of our midfielders, but I have to say I have never achieved that once in all my years of supercoach. There are always star players who disappoint.

If losing 5 points a game but playing every match, and having more buying power to begin with is a problem, you must have an amazing M9.

Gaff’s hardly missed many more. An extra 2 games missed in 8 years. His averages are a little worse over the last 8 years, but slightly better in the last couple of years.

If those two are my M7 and M8 at the end of the season and I’m tossing up luxury trades I’ll be right up the pointy end of the field.

        5

        0
        1. Well put HH. Too many punters look at averages only, but its points that get you places. Zerrett last year averaged the same as Fyfe and J Kelly but scored 250 more points.

          3

          0
          1. Certainly you can expect to make some of that gap up with rookies, but the difference between a good week when a rookie steps in to replace your injury prone “premo” and scores 85 and the one when the rookie either doesn’t play or scores 27 is huge.

Remember people… you pay for AVERAGE Points Per Game. You don’t pay for AVERAGE Points Per Season or TOTAL Points Per Season.

How many times do you want to play rookie roulette to get 5 more points per game? Especially when 5 or 6 times a season you need to accept something between 30 and 100 points less per game?

This is why “never again list” is a thing. You mention two guys who will be on quite a few of those despite their scoring potential.

Even without considering the trades burnt filling a donut. That’s when the likes of Kelly hurt you even more.

  88. Now I’m a little weary of Neale with his hamstring issues at the moment. I know he’s nearly at full strength from what the medics have said, but I’m still cautious in particular with type of injury being so close to Rd.1, no matter who it is.

If he’s looking pretty good by Rd.1, I’ll figure a way to put him back in. For now, this is my Neale-less side.

DEF – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, DGB, Jones, Gould (Wehr, Chugg)
MID – Oliver, Bontempelli, Fyfe, Cripps, Rowell, Heppell, Campbell, Powell (Valente, Downie, Davies)
    RUC – Gawn, Draper (Flynn)
FWD – Dangerfield, Martin, Dunkley, Impey, Dow, Macrae (Rowe, Scott)

Draper I think will average in the 90’s this year. His height will definitely be an advantage for him, and he does alright handling the ball in general. I’m looking to upgrade him to Gawn or Grundy when he peaks (whichever of those guys I don’t start with at R1), unless Draper surprises everyone and averages 110+ out of nowhere, and in that case I’d keep him XD As long as I’m at least getting 200 out of the two ruckmen for the time Draper will be there, that’s okay. I’m sure if Draper doesn’t hit the 100, Gawn will definitely get there and cover some missed points. Better that the absolute yikes I did last year and started Jacobs as my R2.

    2

    8
    1. Jacobs R2 last year? Draper R2 this year? Don’t make the same mistake twice, Corey.

Gawn and Grundy. Lock it in.

      9

      1. I’m not spending $1.5mil on 2 rucks. I’m trying to keep all positions well streghtened.

I know it’s stubborn, but I’m not doing that. I want to make sure I have at least 3 premos in my defenders and forwards, and 4-5 premos in my midfield to makes sure they’re strong enough, and I can’t do that if I’ve spend 15% of my cap on my rucks.

I’m happy to even do one of Grundy/Gawn and one of Nic Nat/O’Brien.

I get your concerns about Draper, but the big difference is Draper is young and on the rise in form, whereas Jacobs was old and way out of his prime.

        3

        5
      2. I’m torn with this and trying to put my bomber bias to one side. On one hand, Draper doesn’t have the r14 bye and frees up plenty of cash for a d5/ m7/8 or f5/6 using the other cash I have in reserve. If Draper averages 20 ppg less than say Grundy, thats 260 pts by r14 when both have had their byes. How many extra points can be gained from having the extra def/mid/fwd over the same time, and will the cash generation from Draper be enough to switch him to a Marshall after the bombers r13 bye ?
Will be watching him closely v cats but all reports are that dons are expecting big things in the no 1 ruck role.

    1. Hmm, can you swing players around to get another position instead? Because you’ve got players like Caldwell, Hately, Rozee all around that price.

I culled a midprice midfielder as well and used the money for a defender upgrade and a rookie downgrade in the midfield to fix the Milera issue.

Projected score is a lot worse, but the cash growth and lack of injuries looks much better.

  90. Can I get some thoughts on my current team please?

Def: Lloyd, Ryan, Williams, N Cox, L Jones, J Wehr (Gould, Chugg)

Mid: Bont, Fyfe, Walsh, Cripps, Rowell, Phillips, Pedlar, Powell (Valente, Collier Dawkins, S. Berry)

    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

Forward: Dunkley, Martin, Butters, Impey, B Campbell, Macrae (Cockatoo, A. Scott)

Gives me 124k in the bank.

Also debating whether to be bold and trade out Gawn for O’Brien, and replace Will Phillips with Taranto, and go deep with the midfield. Thoughts on that move too?

    3

    0
    1. I wouldn’t trade out Gawn he’s 20pts better than 2nd best and if he could kick he’d be 40pts better.
8 on field rookies but only 12 keepers. I have seen teams here with 11 keepers and only 1 on-field rookie.
I don’t see 15 SC worthy rookies getting named round 1 Michael

  91. Alright guys, as I’m sure you are the same you think you have a team set and then you go and play around and a few days later you’ve flipped your team upside down. This is what I’ve landed on so far.

Def: Lloyd, Mcdonald, Williams, Harmes, L.Jones, Laurie (Highmore, Fyfe)
Mid: Neale, Oliver, Laird, Walsh, Cerra, Heppell, Campbell, F.Macrae (Brockman, Downie, Gulden)
    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)
Fwd: Danger, Heeney, Ziebell, Impey, Cox, Bowey (Rowe, Treacy)
    Bank: 19.2k

Starting Laird in the midfield then will be moving him downback with A.Fyfe being DPP and my loophole. Just don’t rate anyone between the 590k – 550K to fill that M3 spot.
I usually run a guns and rookies (3-5-2-3 premos) structure so all these midpricers are pretty risky to me. Let me know your thoughts, wanted to show someone my team thats not in my league as I’ll sit overnight overthinking every decision in my team lol.

    4

    2
    1. Maybe look at players below 550k for M3. I’ve heard that that Cripps guy can play good footy and he averaged 117 and 119 in 2019 and 2018.

  92. Does this structure work?

Lloyd, Laird, Mills, Cox, Jones, more rookies

Neale, Petracca, Cripps, Rowell, Taranto, Heppel, rookies

    Grawndy + Flynn

Danger, Dunks, Ziebell, Daniher, Dow, rookies

Any other year, Cripps at M3 would be acceptable.

    1. If you look at Lloyds past 4 years history you will see that he has only dropped in price once pre-bye and that was because of injury and the drop was less than 10K
In the other 3 years his price increased by up to 75k

    1. Hey Cj,

I think you’re leaving the forward line a little too light with respect to your other lines. I’d drop one of Daniel/Mills and put in one of Martin/Sidebottom/Danger.

I can understand the potential for cash flow with your current forward set up but I believe there’s too much risk with who you have there. Get your premos in and forget. I’d also be paying attention to Neale and seeing if you can get the funds to upgrade Bont to Neale if his good to go round 1. Despite Bont clearly being vital to the dogs midfield you’ll find he always ends up forward at times (coming from someone who’s had him the past 3 years). Rest of the team looks good. Goodluck

      4

      1
    2. It looks like you went G&G, then too heavy on defenders and then your premo mids then ran out of cash, but I get it.

Lots of value pick forwards and few stars you can trust. G and G are nearly a must with Preuss down.

Looks good though. But geez, it just reads like that. 1 premo in the forwards…

I’d honestly put Laird in the mids via Fyfe because I think Jones will be potentially more secure than Valente who really can’t take a trick.

Danger instead of Bont and dpp swap via Dow if the Forward line is giving you nightmares. This keeps me from waking up screaming in the middle of the night, but it still gives me the same number of premos.

    3. I think that you’re wasting some $ CJ
Better value than Cox is available
Mills ave when playing midfield last year was about 100 which ranked him outside top 10 defenders may be better value than him at D3
3 onfield rookies in the middle is too many
The idea of stacking your forward line with Cows is a great idea but only if you don’t have 5 on field rookies across mid and defence

  95. Who is the best forward 450k and under?? Don’t trust anyone except Martin and danger above that, at the moment have Heeny at F3 but don’t really trust him either!!

    0

    0
    1. I would say Dunkley is relatively trustworthy, people are obviously worried about the doggies mids but I would think Bont is more valuable up FWD than dunks. Easy top 6 finish. On the 450k side you’re probably tossing between Butters, Bolton and Heeney. I prefer Bolton and Butters over injury prone Heeney. They’re also getting more mid time this year apparently.

      Best of luck!

    Thoughts?
Fwd line seems pretty average this year…

    18

    1
    1. Too much value in the forwards to be wasting a place on a ‘Prem’ that could be in the midfield or backline. Apart from Danger & Dunks the right premo defender will outscore all of the premo forwards

    1. Thilthorpe to Forwards if named. Flynn is too good a chance of being a cash generating R3 playing as No 1 ruck to not be in EVERY team.

Ignore that point at your own risk. If he’s playing as their main ruck and as Mummy suggests he’s not good for more than 6-8 games for the season Flynn is pretty much guaranteed to generate 250-300k.

      Why would you ignore that?

Thiltorpe at 202k though? He needs to play most games and be a solid 70+ player to generate HALF as much cash.

Players like Anthony Scott look better from the potential cash harvesting and the structure you can build pre round 1.

I seriously tried this structure, built a team… it wasn’t bad.

But 80k cheaper for Flynn, or $100k cheaper for Treacy are both far better.

At 202k you are tossing away a Dow, an Impey, a Daniher or Mason Wood for a guy who they chose to play a practice match in the 2’s…

I hate how many mid pricers I have but where are the rookies? Back line in particular looking bare at the minute. Milera hurting himself caused a pretty substantial re structure. Also these stories around Rozee plus his lack of CBA’s on the weekend has him out. Green sold me with his game on the weekend but he is suited to wet conditions. Taranto with high CBA’s is what i wanted to see. Ditto with Dow.
Heppell is the one with the biggest ? …..until this weeks games at least..

    1. The Garryowen is all about horses walking sideways, slow trotting and crossing their legs when walking forwards.
I see a lot of sideways trading, Slow Burning and crossed fingers with this team so it is aptly named. 🙂

  100. My current line-up is as follows

DEF: LLoyd, Laird, Williams, Milera, Wehr, Highmore (Bianco, Gould).

MID: Neale, Oliver, M.Crouch, Walsh, Cripps, Downie, Powell, Macrae (Valente, Davies, McInnes).

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn).

FWD: Sidebottom, Dunkley, Ziebell, Impey, Dow, Rowe (Kelly, Treacy).

With the injury to Milera, I am contemplating a couple of different options to best replace him.

    TU: Harmes.
TD: Jordan Clarke and Williams to Mills.

Another option I am looking at to replace Milera is Hayden Young. Any comments/insights are welcome.

    1. In the Premium rookies article on this site it is suggested that Clarke is only playing until smith and Duncan come back.
I’d have a look at Cumming, Ash or some other Giant defender because they have to cover for the loss of Shaw, Williams, Corr & the liver injury to Whitfield. That’s 3 high scoring roles or 2 if whitfield is fit for round 1
I watched the Dee’s game and Harmes was very ordinary, when Gus comes back harmes will lose his midfield spot.

  101. Hey all, without boring you with my full side, im keen to get community opinion on the below scenarios.
Premium structure right now is 4-4-2-2 given the apparent dearth of viable R1 def rookie options
    T/U: Ridley D3, Cripps M4, Impey F4 +24k
    T/D: Haynes D4, Macrae M4, Jones F5 +6k

    Cheers!

    1. Surely you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th option?
Ridley didn’t look very good against Carlton’s 2nd string forward line and I didn’t see a single intercept mark or kick-in.
Was that due to no Hurley? Ridley seemed to be sitting in Silvagni’s pocket all day against Carlton and Silvagni isn’t exactly a dangerous key forward so, why?

      0

      1. Given it’s a practice match it could be wanting to see what someone else would do. Or it could have been to manage his running because of a ninor complaint.

Ridley is now a known quantity. Coaches will want to experiment with others.

That’s why these nothing matches make for nothing bar frustration for coaches.

      2. Thanks for replying.

I have a few options, but identified Ridley as 22yo bnf winner who is an excellent kick and intercept marker so i like him as a first choice premium. Tom stewart and whitfield also on the radar but concerned on injury with the latter. Currently have Lloyd, Laird and Daniel as my 3 locked in DEF premiums. Not too concerned by the practice match right now. Id say he was simply blowing out the cobwebs.

    1. He’ll still do alright, he’ll make the $150k.

But the problem is his starting price is right in the awkward zone.

There are better midpriced cash cow options that will go up faster and more.

If he covers himself in glory in the next match a lot of people will jump back on, I’m sure. This was only his first match in Adelaide colours.

I wanted Howe down back but conscious of the R14 bye with Lloyd & Laird.
Danger I’m not 100% on so he could become Kelly, Macrae, Fyfe or back to Neale.
Had Rowell all preseason but dropped him to Taranto. Still 50/50 on him
Butters a POD pick but may sacrifice him to Daniher if I need to free up cash for last minute moves

    1. I would loose one of Phillips or Caldwell and the. Upgrade either Rowell of Green.

DGB might not play one round ? Cox from the Bombers seems to be pushing for selection. Had a good role in the practice match and is good in traffic. One to consider.

Caldwell looked good, but a few of the established midfield from the Bombers didn’t play.

      Good Luck.

  107. Some midfielder brain food

Despite have 3 really bad games (rnd 5 & 6 rnd 18) Cripps topped the league for centre clearance wins. He finished the year as 47th ranked midfield eligible player with an ave of 97 which was 20pts below his 2019 ave. Worth noting that his PPM in 2020 was exactly the same as his PPM in 2019 and 2018.

Jed Anderson & Clayton Oliver had the highest PPM in 2020 at 1.5 (excluding Rowell) Anderson only ave 70.9 mins p/game, Oliver ave 83.8 mins p/game

Fourteen midfield players ave 1.4 PPM of them Ollie Wines had the lowest mins p/game at 72.9, Lachie Neale had the highest at 95.6 mins p/game followed by Steele at 87.1 min p/game
Andy Brayshaws 1.4 PPM and only 74.7 mins p/game suggest that we could easily see a 11 points increase in his ave if he increases his game time 2 mins p/qrtr

    5

    1. Petracca ave 1.3ppm and 90.2 Mins p/game if he lifts his PPM by 0.1 to that of the top 16 midfielders he will ave 126

    1. Very thin in the forward line, i would look at downgrading McDonald and using the cash to upgrade either Daniher or Impey (Both held together by tape), as well as maybe replacing Heeney (My own personal burn-man). Apart from that a solid looking team.

    1. Fair chance his is manage for the first half of the season. You don’t want the future of your Football club needing another shoulder op in his second year.

  109. Def: Lloyd, laird, mills, McDonald, clark, Gould ( Wehr, Highmore)

Mid: Steele, Oliver, Merret, Cripps, Rowell, Green, Valentene, Downie ( Stephens, berry, Davies)

    Ruck: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

fwd: Dunkley, Ziebel, Impey, Dow, Rowe, Henry (Treacy, Durdin)

I left out Neale because I thought with the price he is at, even a shortly interrupted pre-season could be risky. I’ve also got cheap rookies, because then I could afford players like, Siebel and clark.

Let me know what you think

  111. Worth noting Alec Waterman is supposed to have signed up to Esendon after kicking 4 goals in a practice game.

    Cheap rookie forward time…

    1. Waiting for him to get added. Assume he will be 102k and id think is a certainty for early games. We can only hope he is added as a DEF/FWD!!
