  1. Any feedback appreciated, cheers.

DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Mills, Jones, Gould, Highmore (Wehr, Chugg)

MID: Neale, Steele, Petracca, Walsh, Cripps, Phillips, Perkins, Powell (Berry, Downie, Davies)

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

FWD: Dangerfield, Dunkley, Ziebell, Daniher, F Macrae, Cockatoo (Rowe, Treacy)

Rookies subject to selection obviously, most are just placeholders for now. Will probably squeeze Dow into my forward line as well at the expense of one of the North rookies.

      1. I reckon Petrecca will outscore Oliver this year as he has the ability to drift forward and make an impact on the scoreboard

  4. Would love to hear peoples thoughts on this version.

DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Mills, Jones, Gould, Highmore (Wehr, Bianco)

MID: Neale, Merrett, Cripps, Rowell,Phillips, Campbell, Macrae(Cockatoo, Valente, Oea)

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Tracey)

  5. B: Lloyd Laird Greaves Young Jones Gould (Wehr Highmore)

M: Neale Oliver Fyfe Cripps Rowell Powell F. Macrae RCD (Stephens Downie Trew)

    R: Gawn Grundy (Flynn)

F: Danger Martin Heeney Ziebell Cockatoo* Rowe (Laurie Chugg)

Having watched the Hawks last season and the Dogs practice match I’m so sure Greaves is a gun. He’s taking the kick ins, racks it up and Sicily is literally dead. Willing to risk the season on him.

Otherwise pretty standard squad. Cockatoo will likely become Waterman once he gets added in, Ziebell to Daniher if I need some extra rookie cash.

    1. Someone knows something .. Greaves has been marked up $140k on his 2020 closing price .. that’s a 55% mark up ..

  6. DEF; Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Jones, Gould, Highmore (Bianco, Wehr)

MID; Neale, Oliver, Petracca, Cripps, Taranto, Phillips, Powell, Macrae
    (Cockatoo, Valente, Durdin)

    RUCK; Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

FWD; Danger, Martin, Ziebell, Daniher, Perkins, Rowe (Laurie, Treacy)

Rookies subject to change. Still deciding on m5, between Rowell/Taranto

Also unsure on weather I should roll with Ziebell & Daniher, or pick 1 and upgrade one to another premo. 200k in the bank rougly.

    Thoughts please??? Appreciated !

    1. Its nice man. Rowell is pretty much a free hit/risk mitigation because he’s in so many sides, but there’s a very real chance Taranto is much better.

Only issue is I don’t think Perkins is going to play r1.

      2

    2. i think taranto will be getting the Coniglio role from last year. 50/50 mid and forward, Cogs will be in the guts

  7. DEF: Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Jones, Wehr, Highmore (Gould, Bianco).

MID: Neale, Oliver, M.Crouch, Cripps, Walsh, T.Green, Powell, Downiest (Valente, McInnes, Davies).

    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn).

FWD: Sidebottom, Dunkley, Ziebell, Dow, Impey, Rowe (Chugg, Treacy).

Rookies subject to change pending teams.
If enough quality mid rookies get named will look to downgrade Green and use the cash where there is a dearth of rookie options available.

    Any thoughts/comments welcome.

    1. i think Sidebottom or Dunkley might have to become one of Mills or Stewart in Defence if the defender rookies don’t turn up

      3

  8. All great sides just a bit thin defenders 5 to 8th position Highmore ? Gould ? Bianco ? Weir? Young ?Laurie? Will they even play Rd 1 . Think we need to go to young Cummings aish that will play and are good value

    6

    1
    1. We’ll see mate. Can save a lot of $ if we dont have to pay up for young/Cummings. Cummings might not get a game. Would imagine rookies would score close to them, so keep the faith in def rookies a little

      3

  9. Thoughts?

    DEF
Lloyd, Laird, McDonald, Duggan, Jones, Gould…
    Wehr & Highmore.

    MID
Neale, Oliver, Cripps, Rowell, Taranto, Campbell, Powell, Lazarro…
    Smith, Berry & Downie.

    RUCKS
    Gawn, Grundy…
    Treacy.

    FOR
    Danger, Dunkley, Ziebell, Impey, Jones…
    Kelly & Treacy.

Duggan over Williams because I don’t trust him being on the park all year. Still unsure with Rowell going the distance, might try get Walsh or Brayshaw in instead. They both will improve this year.
Forward line is light, but the rookies are there this year.
The rest is pretty stock standard GnR approach. I find when I start this way I finish at a higher ranking most years. Trusted premiums do cost at the start, but I find you use too many trades to get them in later while dealing with other problems.
Campbell will be down graded if more funds are required.

    1. Your forward line is light!
You are missing a player and you have Treacy in rucks as well as forwards.

      2

      0
      1. Good pickup.
        Flynn is R3.
        Rowe is F6.
I’m happy to go lighter in the forward line due to rookies on hand this year. But could change near rd 1.

  10. TU – Neale, Daniher
    TD – Taranto, Butters

These two lineups are on the basis of a strong D1-4 (Lloyd, Laird, McDonald, Williams), so need to make a cut somewhere to fit in Danger as an F2/M2 mix

Again structure will be dictated by rookies

  12. Hey all, interesting year this for rookies, would love your feedback on my team at the moment

    DEF – Lloyd – Laird – Witherden – H.Young – L.Young – H.Chapman (L.Jones – Gould)

    MID – Neale – Oliver – Mitchell – Cripps – T.Green – Cambell – Powell – Downie (S.Berry – Gulden – A.Davies)

RUCK – Gawn – Grundy (Flynn)

    FWD – Dusty – Zorko – Caldwell – Ziebell – Impey – Rowe (Durdin – Treacy)

    1

    2
    1. Really don’t see it with Witherden. I don’t think he’s a best 22 lock and even when he’s scored previously he hasn’t been able to maintain any consistency.

As someone who’s seen all of his AFL games I’m pretty happy to say Lachie Young is bad. He’ll play I guess but think that a 123k rookie is better for your starting side and for cash generation.

      3

      0
      1. Agree with Young, kinda lost around that D4/5 position, I think Witherden would be in the first 22, doing a bit of that Hurn role as he is ageing a bit. Hurn more of a back pocket now. Will be tricky till we know about rookies we can bank on, any mid price def you like?

        0

        0
        1. I’m starting Greaves but I don’t mind Burton or Markov if you’re feeling yourself. Neither have much scoring history but they pass the SC eye test, will have plenty of job security and will almost certainly outstrip their price.

          0

          0
    2. Agree about Witherden.

Zorko is a risky proposition this year – more time up forward plus 32yo and coming off lower leg problems.

      1

      0
      1. Yeah I see so much upside to Zorko as he can go real big and more focus will be on Neale/Lyons/McCluggage with the tags, but your right with the injury issues. Which fwd premiums are a better option? (Except Danger/Dunkley/Sidebottom)

        0

        0
        1. Yeah all the reports are zorko is playing majority forward still have stints through the guts but with players like Rayner now stepping up Dayne will play forward alot more.

          0

          0
  13. As per usual, one injury or scare sees a total team rejuvenation based on most recent preseason match data.

Which we all fall for every year.

    Anyway, here’s where I’m at:

Llllllloyd, Laird, Mills, Jones, H.Edwards, Highmore (Bianco, Wehr)
Satan, Trappa, Walsh, Cripps, Rowell, Dow, Powell, E.Smith (Downie Gulden A.Scott)

GGF We all know what that means right? Gotta Get Flynn 🙂

Danger, Dusty, Heeankle*, Daniher, Impey, H.Jones (Rowe, Treacy)

*In case you hadn’t worked it out Heeney is now Heeankle, because there is actually no problem with his knee.

  14. Heya any thoughts would be much appreciated!

DEF – Lloyd, Laird, Williams, Jones, Bianco, Gould (Wehr, Laurie)

MID – Neale, Steele, Oliver, Cripps, Rowell, Dow, Pedlar, Powell (Macrae, Valente, Downie)

    RUC – Grawndy (Flynn)

FWD – Danger, Dunkley, Ziebell, Daniher, Impey, Cockatoo (Treacy, Chugg)

Picked up a lot of premium rookies in the FWD line. Obviously in the same boat with everyone for lack of DEF rookies. Let me know what you think!

    Cheers,
    B321

    1. I hate your forward line because you are wasting opportunity for big cash generation. I’d scrap all of your mid rookies except Downie and move Danger and Dunks into the middle and add McNiel.
Then up forward I would have waterman, Scott and replace the non-playing cockatoo with HJones. You’d still have the same number of onfield rookies.

Re Powell AFL rookie history is full of diminutive midfield rookie ball magnets who just didn’t have the physical presence to get ball against grown men. Paddy Dow was a prime example he killed in age footy and was almost killed when he started playing against men, he’s bulked up now and looks like a man but Powell is still a boy and he makes Caleb Daniel look like Andre` The Giant

Obviously those comments are based on Scott & McNiel being named and seeing as they play on Monday in rnd 1 it’s mighty risky but no more risky than Wehr, Laurie, Pedlar, Valente, Treacy

      1

      3
  15. I currently have Rowell at M5 and Taranto at M6. Is this move….
    Too risky = TU
    Worthwhile calculated risk = TD

  16. DEF: Lloyd McDonald Williams Jones Highmore Laurie – Wehr sharp

MID: Steele Oliver Merrett Mitchell Laird Rowell Bianco Valente ( RC-D Durdin Downie)

    RUCK : Gawn English

FWD : Danger Dusty Daniher Impey F.Macrae Cockatoo (Brockman Rowe)

    BANK : 61k

    2

    5
    1. English looks like he will be playing mainly as a forward. Stef martin will be taking most of the ruck duties.

Martin would be a good cheap option

      4

      1
      1. And Stef has a pretty good record against Grundy. Grundy ave about 70pts less against Stef than he does against English over last 3 encounters

        0

  17. DEF – LLoyd, Laird, Whitfield, Williams, Harmes, Jones (Gould, Wehr)

MID – Neale, Kelly, Fyfe, Walsh, Rowell, Heppell, Hately, Valente (Downie, Durdin, A. Fyfe)

    RUC – Grundy, Flynn (Treacy)

FWD – Dunkley, Heeney, Ziebell, Daniher, Dow, Rowe (McCrae, Chugg)

Any thoughts would be appreciated, cheers.

    1. How are you ultimately going to get Flynn to gawn? Three trades in round 12 odd? You’ll miss half the year of gawns C scores

      5

      0
      1. Devil’s advocate: If Flynn averages 100 you won’t have to?
Going up against Gawn and Grundy in R3 and R4 won’t help though.

        0

        2
    2. finally someone who isn’t starting gawn, if we are honest with ourselves he isn’t an iron man and due to the constant ruck movement around the league i reckon a few guys going solo ruck (nank, big O)this year are as good a bargain as any other position on field.

      3

      1
      1. There are some risks that hurt you more than others.

        It will be amazing if

        a) Gawn backs up his 2020 form

        And

        b) doesn’t miss games through injury

Of course, the consequences if he does either or both are basically season destroying, since your next option (Assuming you at least take Grundy as the cheaper premium ruck/captain) is 30 ppg or so behind.

For mine, if you don’t start Gawn you HAVE to start Neale as the only alternative Captain who can match him.

But Neale is the one with the interrupted preseason.

        So risk.

The risk is mitigated in that if you take Gawn, most coaches will face the same problem if he fails.

You never know, this could be the year that avoiding the top ruck pays off.

If you think your chances at the top prize are minimal without such a stroke of luck then by all means do so.

So long as it’s a calculated risk, rather than a risk because you’re contrarian in nature.

        3

        0
    3. Gawn ave 140 last year and he’s one of the worst kicks in AFL he only has to turn 1 crap kick into an effective kick p/qrtr to increase that 140 to 150
I had some data on Grundy over last 3 years that identified some genuine anomalies in his 2018 and 2019 scores both season ave 130 but one of them he had less kicks, less hballs, less hitouts, less marks and less tackles plus more FA but maintained the 130.
I don’t see anywhere that he can improve especially now that one of the best centre clearance players in the comp isn’t there to turn hitouts that don’t score into hitouts to advantage that do score

      1

      0
  18. DEFENCE – Lloyd Laird Williams Jones Gould Laurie ( Wehr Highmore)

MIDFIELD – Neale Oliver JKelly Cripps Simpkin Powell Brockman Downie ( F.Macrae Collier Dawkins Gulden)

    RUCK – Gawn Grundy (Flynn)

FWD – Dangerfield Dunkley Daniher Impey Dow Cockatoo (Treacey Rowe)

    KITTY – 244k

TU or TD is nice but always appreciate the comments and feedback 🙂
So Fire away please let me know where I can splash some cash to fill any holes in my side. Cheers

    1. Possibly upgrade a rookie defender. Personally I don’t think Gould will be playing as regularly as we like. Same with Laurie

      6

      0
      1. Thanks Riley. I do have enough for harmes just. Do we have any other decent options around the $350k mark.

        1

        0
        1. Not really. Milera was kind of it.

We’ve gotta see where Nick Cox and DGB fits in.

I think Greaves will go well too but he’s above that pricing.

          1

          0
        2. I wouldn’t rely on Harmes Harry Gus will take somebody’s midfield spot when he comes back and I thought Jordon played a LOT better than Harmes last game and most MFC members that I know agree.

          0

          0
    2. Drop cockatoo for waterman or scott apart from that you will need to pay very close attention to this weeks games and be on the ball with team announcements because the rolling lockouts could leave you with 5 players who don’t play in round 1 and no way to switch them

      1

      0
  19. LLoyd, Laird, Mills, Stewart, Lukosious, Jones (Gould, Highmore)

Neale, Oliver, Merrett, Coniglio, Cripps, Powell, Downie, Gulden ( Brockman, Davies, Macrea)

    Grundy, Hickey (Flynn)

Dunkley, Heeney, Ziebell, Daniher, Dow, WKelly (Rowe, Treacy)

Going with Hickey (or maybe Stef Martin) at R2 makes my other lines much better, especially with Defence with 5 premiums if the rookies in defence don’t turn up

    6

    0
    1. I wouldn’t consider Lukosius a a Premium defender Derek. four sub 60’s and only 5 times over 90 isn’t really premium material.
Last year the 10th best defender ave 101 Mills & Stewart will ave about that, Mills maybe a bit less than 101 if he plays mid because he was mainly used as a defensive/tagger mid when he went to the midfield in 2020 and only ave 99 in the role

      0

      5
      1. I might disagree. In the practice match, they were looking for him taking the ball out of the backline. I see an improvement this year and a worthy D6.

        2

        0
  20. Defence: Laird, Mills, Williams, Harmes, Gould, Koschitkzo, ( Wher, Highmore)
Midfield: Neale, Oliver, Kelly, Merritt, Cripps, Powell, Cockatoo, Lazaro (Berry, Downie, Gulden)
    Rucks: Gawn , Grundy (Flynn)
Forwards: Dangerfield, Dunkley, Rayner, Rowe, Spicer, Laurie ( Smith, Duralin)

Subject to change rookies but set on premiums and mid pricers, what’s everyone thought.

    2

    1
    1. 8 on field rookies could cause problems with rolling lockouts.
What happens if Gould, Wehr, Cockatoo, Smith, Gulden, Laurie don’t get named?
You will be very limited in who you can switch them for.
Actually Cockatoo wont play rnd1 either will Durdin

      1

      1
  21. Def: Lloyd, Laird, Mills, Cox, Gould, Highmore
    (Jones, Chugg)

Mid: Neale, Oliver, Petracca, Rowell, Taranto, Heppell, Campbell, Powell
    (Valente, Downie, Gulden)

    Ruck: Gawndy (Flynn)

Fwds: Dangerfield, Martin, Ziebell, Smith, Jones, Rowe
    (Ralphsmith, Chandler)

    Bank: 11k

    Rookies obviously subject to selection.
Was thinking Grundy to Hickey or Martin to upgrade a rookie defender or mid?

    3

    1
    1. I’m around 1880 but projected doesn’t mean anything round 1. Don’t pick a team based on a high projected score. There’s plenty of people out there that do.

      9

      0
    2. Projected scores that high suggest you are using too many midpricers coming back from injury.

I lost like 60 points when I flipped out Ziebell and Milera…

      3

      0
    3. The more rookies on field the lower the projection. SC seems to give them all projections under 30. My best projection was 1980 something and I’m currently on 1930 after swapping JJones for Waterman and another swap that I can’t remember. I only have 3 onfield rookies atmo

      0

      0
  22. A lot of love for mills, a huge amount infact? I know this is all based on him being talked up to play more midfield once again… Is there any sign of this actually happening this season or not?

    2

    1
    1. Even if he doesn’t he’s still likely a top 6 defender. Moving mid just guarantees that.

      2

      0
    2. I personally think it makes more sense to pay a few thousand extra and get Caleb Daniels (someone who never seems to rate a mention), ultra consistent with a solid scoring history.

      5

      0
    3. He will play midfield Harry BUT when he played mid in 2020 it was mostly as a defensive mid he was switched into mid after half time to tag Bont in round 4 and scored 112 but I think he was on around 60-70 at HT he also moved into the middle for the 4th qrtr against Suns and Pies and in those games only scored 81 & 74.
In the 3 games where played all game as a midfielder he actually averaged less than he did as a defender. He ave 99 as a pure mid and as a defender he aved 102.

      3

13 premos / keepers in my opinion

Rookie forward a bit light on but as are most. Staying away from most injuries although Neale hammy worries me a little.

Hopefully Dow does have a breakout season and Zbell stays on the track . Petracca to be more consistent hopefully.

Cheers lads and lasses. Any feedback will be welcomed.

    Hi Mottsy.

    1. Whitfield and Saad are both under injury clouds aren’t they?

Other than that looks good, other than Williams who is ALWAYS under an injury cloud.

I get the potential, I just think people are confusing potential with reality.

    2. Looks OK Tappy except whitfield and his liver problem but he’s easy to replace. you might struggle to get 8 onfield rookies who play though.
Personally I’d swap danger for Heeney and turn cockatoo into Heppell

    1. I was mega excited by McDonalds prospects for 2021 until Ziebell moved down back and McDonald was virtually unsighted in the practise game. I’d watch the official Pre-season game very closely Goats you could be paying 500k+ for a guy that drops back to sub 80’s

      3

    1. How looks discounted based on his stunning start but historically is a 90 point player so it probably isn’t really a discount.

Caldwell at F1 and 257k in the bank is an interesting strategy. Max cash growth and a big upgrade early?

  28. For those looking for a little more justification to start Paddy Dow.
#3 Draftees since 2000 and when they first had a yearly SC ave of 60+
Dows trajectory has been in the wrong direction (many other #3’s did the same). This data has absolutely no influence whatsoever on Dows score this year but it does indicate that year 4 is THE year to get on cheap number 3 draft picks

Alan Didak – didn’t ave over 60 until 5th year then a bit of a roller coaster
Chris Judd – ave 64 in first year ave 100+ for the first time in his 4th year
Jared Brennan – Didn’t ave over 60 until 4th year (never really SC relevant)
Colin Sylvia – Didn’t ave over 60 until 4th year
Ryan Griffin – ave 69 first year didn’t ave 100 until 7th year
Xavier Ellis – ave 73 2nd year (never really SC relevant)
Lachlan Hansen – ave 62 in 3rd year and stayed around that level for the rest of his career
Chris Masten – ave 65 in 2nd year then dropped to sub 60 for 2 years before being low 90’s high 80’s for 4 years
    Stephen Hill – ave 66 1st year, 76 2nd & 3rd years, 81 4th year
Dustin Martin – ave 78 1st year broke through 100 mark in 4th year
Sam Day – ave 61 in 4th year and stayed around that mark
Dom Tyson – ave 94 3rd year and never ave above that again
Lachie Plowman – ave 60+ in 5th year (ave 63 in 3rd year but only 2 games so it doesn’t count)
    Jack Billings – ave 61 1st year, 84 2nd year, 74 3rd year, 93 4th year, 81 5th year
    Angus Brayshaw – ave 65 first 2 years, then 72 then 97
    Callum Mills – ave 77 1st year, then 73 in 2nd, 79 in 3rd, 82 in 4th
    Hugh McCluggage – ave 77 2nd year then 94 then 102
Paddy Dow – ave 60 in first year then 54 and then 38 last year (his 3rd season)
Izak Rankine – didn’t play year 1 but ave 69 in year 2
Luke Jackson – ave 58 first year

  31. Here’s the latest version of my team:

Def – Lloyd, Laird, Daniel, Mills, Young, Jones (Gould, Walker)

Mid – Neale, Oliver, Cripps, Rowell, Green, Campbell, Powell, Downie (Smith, Jordon, Gulden)

    Ruc – Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

Fwd – Danger, Dusty, Cahill, Henry, Rowe, Treacy (Brockman, Waterman)

    $56.4k bank.

Not trusting that we’re getting many Def rookies so have gone deep there with Walker as my floating donut . Young taking kick-ins or distributing out of the back line excites me.
Obviously fwds are the weak point with lots of rookies but it looks at this stage that at least they will all play so money to be made there.
Rucks set and forget. At least 11 keepers plus Rowell and Green who are easy stepping stones or M8/9.

    Thoughts coaches?

  32. I have a tough decision:

  33. I worry Chappy won’t get games, which was the cause of my most recent restructure.

You’ve got Pearce, Hamling, Conca and Young to come in off the injury list from 2020 to consider.

    Then there’s Tobe Watson’s improvement.

And of course the current coaching fascination with turning forwards into defenders.

Gonna be tough for Chappy to get consistent games.

      1. Its a worry i agree.
        My contingency is as follows:
Out: Stewart, Macrae, Wehr, Scott, Jones
In: Williams, Cripps, DBG, Powell, Dow
This will carry less risk for sure as it will lock in the carlton players ahead of the rolling lockout/staggered team announcements

M: Neale, Steele, Oliver, Cripps, Green, Clark, F.Macrae, Downie

    1. I like alot of your selections individually, but perhaps a few too many mid pricers? TMac, Ash, Green, Clark, Butters, Phillips,Caldwell all reasonable picks, but the chances of them all becoming premiums/stepping stones are unlikely.
Personally id pick the 3 or 4 you are really keen on and downgrade/upgrade the others

  36. Hey all, keen to get top 100 again but not really liking any of my starting sides at the moment. Thoughts on this one:

Def: Lloyd, Laird, Mills, Z Williams, H Young, L Jones (Gould, Chugg)

Mid: Steele, Oliver, Cripps, Rowell, N Anderson, T Green, B Campbell, T Powell (RCD, Downie, Gulden)

    Rucks: Gawn, Grundy (Flynn)

Fwds: Dunkley, Ziebell, Daniher, Dow, Kelly, Bergman (Henry, Rowe)

Not sure if I like all the mid pricers as some are sure to fail but all have high ceilings imo. I think Mills and Z Williams if both stay fit will be 95+ which will be good enough for top 10 Defenders.
I hope Cripps can be a keeper and fingers crossed Rowell can be too. I also think Anderson and Green are both capable of averaging 90+ which should give me good scoring + solid cash generation at the same time. They could both also average 100 I reckon if things go their way.
Ziebell is almost locked into my side just with the amount of volume of ball that will be going down in North’s back half he has to get around 16 touches a game at least while also doing plenty of tackles and one percenters. Daniher and Dow are big risks but at their prices are looking to juicy to miss.

    Let me know your thoughts.

95 ave would have ranked 17th

T Green I doubt can ave 100 this year with a rookie ruck but Anderson should do OK

  40. Anyone else worried about Grundy if Darcy Cameron plays? I know didn’t play a whole lot last season in the hub but can’t help but feel he gets more of a crack this year… Which I can only feel affects Grundy output. If I’m paying $650k I want to know his solo every week and punching 120 minimum week In week out and giving me captain scores or VC scores to

    3

    1. in 2020 Darcy Cameron played
      Rounds 2,3,8,9,11,12,13,14
Grundy’s ave for those games was 107.13 or 14 points below his season average. Those games included a shocker 61 when NicNat and Oscar Allen thrashed him with a big stick.
If you take out his shocker he ave 113.7 when cameron played which is only about 8 below his season ave.

Cameron only averaged 4 hitouts p/game so it’s difficult to see why Grundy dropped so many points when he played. maybe he spent more time off the ground?

    1. Luke Beveridge says Josh Dunkley is ‘not at his best’ and there’s ‘pressure on for his spot’. This is on Fox news this morning.

      3

      0
      1. the full comment was
Beveridge said there was no guarantee the 24-year-old would be back in the midfield full time.

“(Dunkley) didn’t play his best game against Hawthorn (last week),” Beveridge said.
“He’s fully aware that there’s pressure for game time in any role in our team.
“There’s pressure on for his (Dunkley’s) spot and the role that he plays.”

Except for 1 or 2 players just about every player in the AFL is under pressure to hold their spot. Having ‘pressure to hold your spot’ is a lot like ‘we’ll just take it 1 week at a time’ it’s an afl cliche`.

Treloar will miss the first couple of games due to mis-managing a corked calf that has now become a bit chronic so in the early rounds Dunkley should get plenty of mid minutes and could potentially start the season the same way that he finished 2019 when he ave 127 over the final 6 games

  47. A bit of Ruck thought material from the imaginarium

    Grundy ave 171 against English in last 3 encounters (179, 174, 160)
Grundy ave 106 against Stef Martin in last 3 encounters (88, 121, 110)

Stef Martin is the new #1 Ruck at the Doggies or at least he will be early on.

IF you swap Grundys historical scores/ave against English with his historical scores/ave against Stef this is what it does to his season averages
    2020 would be 117 down from 121
    2019 would be 125 down from 130

Those drops are small and would still have Grundy as #2 Ruck for SC in 2020 and 2019.
The interesting thing is what it could do to his early season ave when he plays Dogs in round 1 i.e could we see a 50k+ drop in Grundy’s price after round 5?

If we give him the same scores as last year but change the dogs score to his ave against Stef his first 5 games ave would be 106.6

    Dogs -106
    Blues -127
Lions -104 (Was against Oscar Mac)
GWS – 135 (was against Mummy and will be again)
    Eagles -61

5 game ave based on last years scores Ave 106.6

He is priced to ave 120.7

    1

    2
    1. If you also factor in the loss of one of the leagues top clearance players (treloar) reducing his HTA by 1 or 2 p/game the price drop could be massive

      2

        1. Tossing up between Stef and Hickey Harry. I can’t cope with a true rookie like Flynn at R2. This weekend will make the decision for me.
I’m fairly confident that Hickey & Cripps will deliver more points than Grundy and a rookie

          2

          1. Will Andrew Phillips play for Essendon do U think or will Draper be #1 ruck? He looks a good shout and a reasonably nice fixture early

            0

            1
            1. I had a look at Draper earlier in preseason and I reckon that Stef & Hickey are both better value. They’ll both match or exceed Drapers score and the extra 100k comes in handy

I fully intend to get Grundy but way too much risk of losing 100k by starting him

              1

              0
    2. I did the maths using the pricing formula detailed on this page http://supercoachtalk.com/how-supercoach-pricing-works-2021/
If I use Grundys 3 game ave against Stef for round 1(106) and then use his last year score against the opponents up to his bye
      Dogs – 106
      Blues – 127
      Lions -104
      Giants -135
      Eagles -61
      Bombers -151
      Suns -105
      Roos -85
      Swans -147
      Power -122
      Cats -144
      Crows -100
      Demons -148
The cheapest that Grundy will be before byes is $604,700 after the suns game (round 7) $606,200 after the Roos.
At the bye he will be back to his starting price.

So, if you aren’t starting without Grundy and you intend to get him the best time will be after round 7 or 8. His actual average at that time will be 113*
      *based on scores as detailed

It’s reasonable to say that he wont put up a 61 against the eagles in 2021 but he also might not put up 151 against the bombers or 147 against the swans (his most recent against Hickey was 109 in Grundys career best year 2018)

  54. An interesting team I’ve come up with here. More than likely won’t stay this way, but I thought I’d explain a few choices.

DEF – Lloyd, Laird, Short, Williams, Jones, Highmore (Wehr, Chugg)
MID – Oliver, Macrae, Fyfe, Cripps, Taranto, Heppell, Powell, Macrae (Smith, Valente, Davies)
    RUC – Gawn, Martin (Flynn)
FWD – Dangerfield, Martin, Heeney, Dow, Campbell, Waterman (Rowe, Scott)

Made a couple of changes from what the Bulldogs have been saying recently.
Apparently Dunkley’s spot is up for grabs, so I’m not trusting him right now. I’ve put Heeney in for now, but I would like to see how he goes in the pre season match.

Also it sounds like Martin will be taking over as the No. 1 ruck over English. It’s risky, but Martin (excluding last year) has had a proven history with scoring consistent scores. Even if he only averages about 90, that’ll still be some good money made and I can upgrade him to Grundy when Flynn reaches his peak.

Also decided to go a couple of PODs here.
Short is coming of a B&F year at the Tigers, spanked his previous best year in SC scoring and now should coming into his prime years. I like his chances of breaking the 100 average this year, and is the best positioned player out of the Tigers (apart from Dusty) to do so. I will say though, as a Tigers fan, not the most SC friendly team.

Second one is Macrae. The fact that he has averaged 120+ in the last three seasons
and percentage of people that own his 12% baffles me. I get that the Dogs midfield will be stacked. But Macrae is like Neale and Mitchell, they get a lot of little quick disposals regardless of who’s playing with them. I have a hunch that he might average better than Neale this year.

Also put Taranto in for Rowell. Not exactly a POD, but I’ve seen people umm and ahh-ing about choosing out of those two for M5. Taranto has proven he can score and looked very good in his practice match. I believe he might be a touch better than Rowell this year with SC scoring. Plus from what I’ve heard, Rowell looked a bit rusty in his practice match.

I understand that some picks here may be different. But considering everyone’s teams are relatively the same, I’m willing to risk a couple of PODs in hope to stand out among the other sides.

    13

    1
    1. What about the Fyfe role this year Corey . I know that he attended a lot of centre bounces in the practice match, but I don’t think it will stay that way and he will push forward more.

      3

      0
      1. I have a good feeling about Fyfe regardless. He can kick a goal or two when pushed up forward, plus he can gather quite a few marks (not afraid to get some contested ones at that), which is another positive. I’d think he’d stay around the half forward area when pushed forward, that way he can still gather quite a few possessions and help some of the other forwards out.
He might stay up the midfield though too, if they really like what he’s doing right now during pre-season.

Only worry I’d understand that others may have is his injury history. I’m well aware of that. But as I said, I’m willing to take a risk or two to make a difference.
Josh Kelly was my big risk choice at the start of last year, and in the long run was one of the best (and possibly lucky) choices I made last year. Missed one or two games, but that’s good considering it was Kelly. If it wasn’t for him my season last year may have been a lot worse, depending on who I’d have picked instead of him.

        1. I don’t understand how you can consider Josh Kelly a good choice last year, yes it was good for him in that he only missed 17% of games instead of the 30%+ he missed in the two previous years but if you started him he only delivered an ave of 94 over the season.
          Josh Kelly supercoach history
          2020 missed 3 games = 17% of games missed
          2019 missed 8 games = 36% of games missed
          2018 missed 7 games = 32% of games missed
          2017 missed 1 game
          2016 missed 0 games
          2015 missed 4 games

If you you define a players average by dividing their total score by the number of games in a season (which is the SC way to do it) Jelly’s ave is putrid
          2020 -94
          2019 – 75
          2018 – 78
          2017 – 109
          2016 – 87
          2015 – 70

          1. I mean no disrespect Doktor, but you’ve absolutely lost me with that lot of stats. I don’t know how that’s supposed to make any sense whatsoever.

What I’m gathering from what you’re saying, is you’re dividing each of his season SC totals by 22 games?
Let’s say for example, we look at his 2019 season. Played 14 games and averaged 117. You’re then adding 8 games of 0 (which he didn’t play) and dividing that all together, which comes to the average you came up with, which was about 75.

I can tell you right now, that is NOT the SC way to do it. You can’t add 8 games he didn’t play in a season and sum that all up as an “honest” average for any player.

In that case then Gary Ablett in 2014, who played 15 games with an average of almost 137, must’ve really been averaging 93 because we’ll add 7 games of zero out injured to his total.

            3

            1
    2. Another point I’ll add to this too

If Heeney does bad in the pre-season or looks to struggle again with injuries, I may put in Phillips for him, depending on how his pre-season ends up going. He did look good from the Hawks practice game. Impey or Ziebell could be an option for F3, but preferably I’d like to have the first 3 forwards be premos or 2 premos and a potential breakout player, just so that area can have some strength

    1. McDonald virtually unsighted in last weeks game Maverick. I’d be watching very closely this weekend because Ziebell appears to be taking about 20% of his possession and LMac could easily slip back to his usual 80 ave.

I also doubt that 3 midfield rookies onfield will be a benefit when you have the leagues biggest injury magnet at M3

      1. Thanks doktor.

McDonald will be a close watch for me in this next match I didn’t watch north v saints but what I heard were good things and that he was still the go to man with Ziebell back there?

I think I’ll go JKelly down too Brayshaw but makes my midfield look light on but I think Brayshaw and Walsh look decent picks And present some value. Both are showing All the right signs to do something special this season.

Still got the Grundy dilemma but I’ll hold til after this weekend haven’t seen enough from Hickey, Stef or Draper yet to justify selecting them.

    TU: Worth a look.

    1. I’m a big fan of Brayshaw Ben . I had him in my side for a while but opted for Walsh instead, for now atleast. But I love the Brayshaw pick he is in that window where he can explode and looking at his CBAs last week his the main man now in that midfield.

    2. Certainly worth the consideration.

The big question becomes something that was kind of implied in that interview, which is that if Freo is doing ok (or better) in the mids then Fyfe plays up forward.

If not, Fyfe comes back into the midfield.

Realistically, how often does that look likely to occur?

It’d probably be worth going through their fixture and seeing where you believe Freo’s new midfield can obtain that level of superiority.

    3. His TOG in 2020 was among the lowest for players in his position who ave over 100 he will increase TOG in 2021 due to a natural increase in fitness / durability.
He is a great choice IMO and I put him in my squad after analysing the PPM of the top 40 mids from 2020

    2. Hi Adhitya, welcome to Supercoach! A few thoughts on your team:

Take out McEvoy and Fantasia, and replace them with a genuine premium player and a rookie. They’re good players, but neither will score well enough and they’ll just clog up your list.

You need at least one more genuine premium in your midfield, preferably someone who will be a decent choice for captain each week.

Forward line looks good. Cameron is a speculative pick but there’s nothing wrong with that.

McInerney is an interesting choice. I assume you’re not expecting to finish the year with him in your team, so make sure you have a plan of what you want from him i.e. when do you expect to trade him out.

      Good luck this year!

      11

    3. Yo!

McInerney is an interesting pick. I’d personally would like to see another season from him before considering him as either of my starting rucks, but if you’re happy with him then I hope he has a good year for you.

I agree with Chillo though with the Fantasia and McEvoy picks. Orazio has lingering injuries and not the most consistent. Benny is getting to old and Ceglar will probably continue being the No.1 man at the Hawks, which takes even more points away from him. I’d be replacing those two with some rookie defenders like Grainger-Barras or Lachie Jones. Could even consider someone like Hayden Young, who’s being talked up a lot at Freo in the preseason. They should all make you a lot more money than McEvoy and Fantasia.

I’d downgrade either Cameron or Walters to someone like Impey or Dow. And upgrade one of your cheaper rookies into another midfield premo player
(someone like Neale, Macrae, Oliver, Merrett, Fyfe).

Good luck with the season matey! ^.^

      1. Coach seems to say otherwise with MacEvoy being the #1 and Ceglar relegate to the forward line.

As such, and given the bye structure, a donut d/r (eg Bailey J Williams) and Big Boy in defence is a very viable strategy that has advantages that a fit Marshall would fail to meet due to his bye.

If Big Boy plays 70% ruck time and say 15% resting defender 15% bench he’s still gonna be at least a mid 80’s player.

Potentially higher, based on changes to those percentages.

With defender “success” usually considered to be in the 90-95 range for a D5 or D6 it’s a different strategy that could pay off.

        1. Ah ok. I haven’t heard Clarkson’s comment, so that would make sense haha.
I’ll be sure to check it out later.

And very true, could be a foggy chance at being successful in the defence.

  58. Some sage advice

If you are starting a player who misses games regularly (i.e if they only manage to play every game 1 year in 3) ignore the averages they have and instead divide their total score by the number of games in the season. JKelly falls into this category.
A player who averages 150 p/game but only plays 14 games is 100 points worse than a player who ave 100 and plays all 22 games

Worried about the byes. Feel like rd 12 bye offers very little premos of interest and it’s causing a lot of premos ending up in 13 and 14.

Currently bye structure with premos is:
1-5-7. By swapping Mills to Stewart it’d be 2-5-6 which is a little bit better.
Interested to see what coaches are doing with bye preparation.

    Cheers,

    1. I back Phillips to fire, but both options are good. I would go Green and Impey as Impey is seriously underpriced, and green has the potential to go massive. I just don’t see smith outperforming Impey, and green can definitely outscore phillips

    1. You need to have a least 1 big name premo in the forwardline, and your midfield is wayyyy too stacked. I suggest getting rid of Harmes and Heppell to rookies/cheaper options as they are liabilities of getting high scores anyways, and potentially trade one of your 200k forwards up to a premo. DGB is a great option for the backline and B.Campbell is great mid priced rookie for the midfield

I’m probably going to pick Walsh.

Only because Cerra or Serong ( depending on rookie spend. ) are my M5 at this stage.
