  1. “Rate My Team” you say, Motts?

How the f*ck am I supposed to put a team together with all these expensive rookies?!?

  2. The team as of now. had to spend up for rookies around the ground, so cripps is making that happen.

Def – Lloyd, Crisp, Ridley, Whitfield, Gibcus, Sinn ( De Koning, Voss)
Mid – Macrae, Steele, Neale, Cripps, Berry, JHF, Daicos, Ward ( Stephens, MacDonald, Uwland)
    Ruck – Grundy, Darcy ( J Hayes)
Fwd – Dunkley, Heeney, Butters, Cogs, Rachele, McCartin ( Hollands, Dixon)

    1. Impressive, GGG.

I can’t stand the Cripps pick but can see it’s allowed you to get all the necessary expensive rookies and start 13 keepers, provided Cripps is also one.

      Very nice.

      1. Thanks for the reply GD. For me, Cripps is just a necessary evil with all the injuries and the lack of low price rookies at this point.

  3. LLOYD, RYAN, SHORT, WHITIELD, HEWETT, MCCARTIN , (SINN, ODRISCOLL)

    1. Might want to drop Hewett for someone like sinn and then look to upgrade Caldwell to a premium. Maybe Brodie to McCartin and to help fund this

      1

      11
      1. Hewett had one year he averaged over 80. Most years between 73-78. At $400k you want at least 90 from him, your asking him to do somthing he has never done, and even then he won’t be a keeper and you trade him and make $70k.

        2

        4
  4. *Bench rookies are subject to being named – $55k ITB to adjust them.

DEF – Lloyd, Crisp, Whitfield, Chapman, Gibcus, McCartin (O’Driscoll*, Dean*)
MID– Macrae, Steele, Oliver, Neale, Berry, JHF, Daicos, Rachele, (Ward, Stephens, MacDonald*)
    RUCK– Grundy, Gawn (Preuss)
FWD – Dunkley, Butters, Cogs, Brodie, Xerri, Durdin (N Martin*, J Hayes*)

A bit of money on the sidelines with Preuss but if he plays he should make a bit of coin. Hayes to swap in if Preuss needs to go.
11.5 keepers is a bit on the shy side but I think the JS of the $150k-$270k players is good while still able to make $100k-$150k.

    Thoughts appreciated!

  5. First team posted for the year, lots of expensive rookies on the field, hopefully I’m on right track.

Mid: Macrae, Steele, J Kelly, Neale,
Berry, JHF, N Daicos, J Ward,

  6. (Reposting my comment from the last RTM, as the new one got put up not long after I posted)

Tristan Xerri looked to have play as main ruck over Goldy yesterday and did pretty well with a solid 96.

Is he looking like he’ll take the No.1 ruck for the Roos this year, or will he play more down forward while Goldy stays up the middle? Also, does this mean that Comben’s JS for an early debut is in jeopardy?

    10

    0
    1. Comben looking last in line for Roos rucks.
Interesting that they have given Xerri so much ruck time. Is it that they want Goldy forward to support Larkey?
CCJ much better up forward than ruck and Xerri better ruck than forward.
You’d think given that, they would have Goldy ruck and CCJ as the forward/ruck but Goldy has played more forward in both preseason games.
I think they will go with Xerri number one and Goldy forward/ruck based on preseason.
If no CCJ named round 1 I think that will be the way they go

      4

    2. With Xerri in the ruck against Sydney’s duo of Tom Hickey and Hayden McLean, North Melbourne lost the clearance count 15-19. With Goldstein, the Kangaroos lost the clearance count 8-19 … this is from an AFL website analysis article.

You also have to consider CCJ who also has ruck ambitions but may play forward early. Maybe CCJ/Xerri will be doing the rucking later in the season. All 3 may play R1.

  7. Def: Lloyd, Crisp, Short, Whitfield, Hinge, McCartin (Gibcus, Boyd)

Mid: MacRae, Steele, Neale, Cripps, Hewett, JHF, Daicos, Ward (C. Stephens, MacDonald, Parker)

    1. If Hewett goes back for one of the premiums, you can bring in someone like berry and then use the spare change to upgrade Brodie to someone like butters

  8. D: J. Lloyd, L. Whitfield, J. Sicily, W. Kelly, J. Sinn, S. De Koning (P. McCartin, N. O’Driscoll)

    M: J. Macrae, J. Steele, T. Miller, L. Neale, P. Cripps, J. Berry, N. Daicos, J. Horne-Francis (J. Ward, D. Stephens, J. Tsitas)

Have changed about 300 things in the past 2 weeks so would love some thoughts!

    1. Personally not a fan of the Witts pick, and I don’t like that one of KElly, De Koning or O’Driscoll is starting. Probably gone too deep in the Midfield with Ward and Stephens on the bench. They are solid starting options in the mids, so maybe sacrifice a mid premo and start one of them. This will help you get someone like Crisp down back, or Whitfield and maybe upgrade Witts.

      3

      0
      1. Appreciate it.
Swapped out Neale to start Ward, which meant I could grab Crisp down back and drop O’Driscoll. Still finding it tough to find enough cash to upgrade Witts unless I flip another premo.
De Goey probably the most viable to get rid of but a gut feeling is telling me he could have a big year through the midfield?

        3

        0
          1. Witts is a risk, could be managed to start season, low TOG, plus has NicNat and Gawn first 2 rounds.

I’d wait and watch and look at getting him round 3 if you’re still keen

            0

            1
  9. Here’s a left field option that could score well early and rake in the cash. Worst two scorers are likely JHF & Rachele. There’s bench cover and decent cash generation on the bench – and should have no trouble bringing the pending rookies (Hobbs, O’Driscoll, Hollands, MacDonald, etc) through in rolling upgrades without negatively impacting the on-field team. Not that it matters much, but the projected score is still 1810 if I put the C on Gawn. 20 players with a very realistic chance of hitting the ton. 5 decent captain options. 13 keepers (including Hewitt and Gunboat’s favourite mid pick of the 2022 season in Cripps): –

Lloyd, Crisp, Ryan, Short, Whitfield, Hewitt
    (Gibcus, Boyd)
Neale, Cripps, Rowell, Berry, Cogs, JHF, N.Daicos, Ward
    (Soligo, Hough, Long)
    Gawn, Darcy (Dixon)
Dunkley, Treloar, Butters, Brodie, Xerri, Rachele
    (McCartin, J.Hayes)

    $16.1 k ITB

Prefer Dawson to Ryan in def, but doesn’t seem an option on intel to date.
Pumped by Dangers being named on ball tonight and keen to see how he plays (only Chris Scott is as untrustworthy as Lean Cameron when it comes the big fella’s role – wish he would just leave Dangers on the ball) – would love to bring him in, maybe at the expense of Ryan…

      1. Agree wholeheartedly Finn, but their prices come with a lot of opportunity costs, and look difficult to work around.

        4

        0
      2. Macrae won’t hurt. hes the most consistent scorer in the game (doesn’t have huge 150+ games) and priced very high.

Oliver will hurt if you don’t have him for the 3 games a year he goes 170+

not a fan of having Crips. Seems like you could have a cheaper D6 in the midprice range and get him up to a true Premo mid.

Would look to swap one of Boyd for a Def/Fwd swing so Mccartin can be moved between lines to cover injury.

        2

        1
  10. Is Sinn playing? He only came on for the second half and didn’t look great. Gibcus is a maybe but it’s a bit of a bummer spending $170k on a rookie who will score actually 5 some weeks.

The only defender rookie I think we can have any confidence in is McCartin. I’ve got Bowey at D5 and can’t see another viable structure.

    3

    1
    1. Hey, Based.

Yeah, had a few good touches later on but Sinn not looking promising for Round 1 despite the hype.

Hinge, Gibcus, McCartin, De Koning and maybe Boyd are the viable rookies rn but none of them have great scoring streams tbh. Hinge relies on outside ball, Gibcus like you mentioned will be playing a key defensive role, McCartin is McCartin, De Koning might have issues at the level and Boyd is a small FWD at Carlton.

Going deep down back could still be the play.

      3

        1. Done all the preseason and a good chance to find a spot on a wing R1. They like him, has a great left boot. Played R1 last season before getting injured.

          2

          0
  11. Given dearth of cheap rookies who look like they have decent job security or will score well at this point in time, I have taken the approach of grabbing most of the $200-$300k players who are looking good knowing if they fail, hopefully a cheaper rookie will have stood up to take their place. We have extra trades this year which will allow greater flexibility to fix up for any errors. Fair bit of coin on the mid and ruck bench, but those selections should provide half decent price appreciation and could be on-field options.

DEF: Short, Whitfield, Hewett, Chapman, Hinge, McCartin (De Koning, Dean*)
MID: Macrae, Oliver, Neale, Cripps, Berry, Caldwell, Horne-Francis, Daicos (Rachele, Ward, MacDonald)
    RUC: Gawn, Grundy (Pruess)
FWD: Dunkley, Treloar, Butters, Coniglio, McGovern, Brodie (Martin, Hayes)

Aware Dean likely won’t play first few rounds. All other rookies subject to selection. $13.8k left at bank.

    1. It’s a strategy I’ve gone with too, although some of the names differ.

As such I can’t fault it for strategy.

But didn’t both Hinge and Treloar have shoulder issues this week? You’ll need to be watching the injury lists closely.

I’d rather Rachele on the field and do something else than McGovern too.

  12. This is what I’m currently toying with

B – Lloyd, Whitfield, Sicily, Hewett, McCartin, Gibcus (Voss DeKoning)
M – Macrae, Steele, Brayshaw, Neale, Berry, JHF, Daicos, Ward (Stephens, MacDonald, Tsitas)
    R- Gawn, Grundy (Dixon)
F – Dunkley, English, Butters, Cogs, Xerri, Rachele (Martin, Hayes)
    $19k bank

English & Hewett probably the 2 I’m not sure on most structure wise. Will depend on rookies

    5

    1
  13. Going back to a 4-4 -2-2 structure here. I think the back premos will score more than a forward premo. More consistency there at least.

DEF: Lloyd, Crisp, Short, Whitfield, Gibcus, McCartin (O’Driscoll, Uwland)
MID: Macrae, Miller, Brayshaw, Neale, Berry, JHF, Daicos, Ward (Stephens, MacDonald, Parker)
    RUC: Naitanui, Grundy (Hayes)
FWD: Dunkley, Butters, Coniglio, Brodie, Xerri, Rachele (Maginness, Martin)

    $23,200 remaining

Lloyd and Nic Nat’s AAMI games weren’t too impressive, BUT they’re just pre-season games. So when it comes to the premos, I’m not too worried on that.

D5 wiil be out of Gibcus and Hinge, whoever gets the nod in Rd.1.
McCartin looks very likely to start first round too.

Brodie has looked very good during the whole pre-season, and gets the nod from me at this point in time.
That obviously freed up some cash, and I turned Cripps into Brayshaw. I think he might very well break into $600k+ this year with what I’ve seen so far.

Also have Xerri currently at F5. It’s looking like he might be taking more of the ruck work than Goldstein, and he also showed yesterday that he gets a lot of contested ball (14/17 were contested I believe). I’ll wait and see if I hear any more on that. In the end, that position will be out of him or Ralphsmith.

    7

    1
  14. Ridley, Short, Whitfield, Sicily, Hinge, Sinn (Gibcus, SDK)
Macrae, Steele, Satan, Neale, Caldwell, JHF, Ralphsmith, Daicos (O’Driscoll, MacDonald, Tsitas)
    Darcy, Preuss (Hayes)
Dunkley, Duncan, Butters, Rayner, Cogs, Rachele (McCartin, Durdin)

Whitfield and Sicily both scare me so may upgrade one and then dump the other to either upgrade Preuss or a fwd to Treloar but basing current side on projected rookies playing

  15. Shutting the revolving door which is my team and sitting on this. Couple im not so sure about and alot of cash sitting on the bench but it seems the most viable play.
Not super happy with the backs but not keen to drop anyone from another line to improve it. Possibly drop Preuss to turn Baker into Ridley or Short but whats more important the cash gen from Preuss or an extra 15-20 pts per week in defence? Feedback on that appreciated.

Ryan, Whitfield, Baker, Chapman, Gibcus, Mccartin ( Sinn, Kelly )

Macrae, Steele, Brayshaw, Neale, Berry, Daicos, Ward, Stephens ( Mead, Rioli, MacDonald )

    1. I feel like Hewett might score a bit more for the first 5 weeks without Walsh, but when Walsh comes back his role will drop off. I would pick Chapman, as he saves 120k and should score similarly after the first few rounds

      1. If I had to guess I would say TD are not keen on Preuss and/or Cripps.
I have no problem with them but plenty of others do.

        1

        0
        1. You’re kinda right Derek.

It’s more about structure. It’s ” where ” the rookies are on field .

Relying on 3 on field rookies in defence and forward while only having 2 in the midfield.

This is the structure most folks are trying to avoid atm

I would look at maybe dropping a mid as 3 on field rookies in the midfield is a minimum. Then look at adding a defender or forward .

Ultimately you want best 22 players at D4 and F4.

      1. GGG – I share your apprehension on Raynor, but if he is promised midfield time, then surely he gets 6-8 games before he finds himself back as permanent FWD. It is hard to average less than 85 if playing in the mids which I think is enough to pay his way.

      Should be right for R1.

I’m personally looking at him as an upgrade target.

    2. Titch didn’t play the AAMI game the other day and then post-game Sam Mitchell was talking about his “groin issue” outta nowhere.

  23. More tewaking with for Job Security.

Def Lloyd, Crisp, Ridley, Whitfield, Rioli, Chapman: Boyd, DeKoneig

Last year’s Highmore and Donuts is just something i don’t want to do again. Paid up for a good no drama’s defence. 4 keepers + 2 midpricers including some DPP.

Mids: Steele, Oliver, Neale, Berry, Brodie, JHF, Daicos, Ward: Stephens, Odriscoll, hollands.

Gotta go where the rookies are. M4-8 could average 450-500 points and only cost 1.05M. Stephens is more expensive then i like for a bench rookie but should make good cash and having good cover with that many rookies is important. Hollands is the C loop.

    Ruck. Gawndy + Hayes.

Melbourne have a very soft opening schedule. Max will score if he’s on the field. don’t want to bet against him. More time forward probably just means more Goals.

FWDs: Dunkley, Butters, Cogs, Xerri, Ralphsmith, Rachelle: McCartin and Maginness.

Assuming Cogs is a Keeper then i have 12 keepers (bare minimum you want with the extra trades.) Rather have my 200k breakout types on the field then on the bench (Pruess)

    cash. $1,700

No 102K rookies (aside from R3) Means that any rookie downgrades will be just extra cash in the bank

  24. This is by the hardest starting team in over a decade! High premo prices and high rookie prices as forced some interesting plans over here!

    From the “Fat stacked” Back:
Rich, Crisp, Ridley, Short, Whitfield, Chapman; Sinn, Mccartin

    The Aldi special isle mids:
Macrea (VC), Kelly, Neale (C), Berry, Cogs, Ralph, Daicos, Ward; Stephen’s, MacDonald, Tsitas

    What the Rucks:
    Marshall, Prueuss; Comden (Loop)

    Forwards:
Dunkley, English, Butters, Brodie, Xerri, Rachele; Maginness, Hollands

    Bank: $122.5k

    Notes:
6x stack backline, all rookies haven’t impressed, causing extreme restructure.
English/Comden link for flex in the Rucks.
Marshall to Grundy if rookies work out alright.

  25. Hey guys,

    Draft question here…

    I’m in a 14 team league with 5-7-1-5 (+4 bench).

Meaning there is bugger all mids, below are some notable players left on the waiver wire, would appreciate who you guys think will average the most:

    • Jack Newnes
    • Blake Acres
    • Will Setterfield
    • Caleb Poulter
    • Jack Bytel
    • Hugo Ralphsmith

    2

    0
    1. It’s not about who will average the most.

It’s about match ups each week.

Look who might have an easier game coming up, or if there has been an injury in a team and an opportunity is there

Example: Collingwood have two suspended and a couple of injures. This might help Poulter this week get a better role or more TOG

Or Preuss is suspended for round 1, does this give Briggs an opportunity (is Flynn on waivers?)

Hanaberry doubtful, Jones missing, Clark injured, does Bytel get a bump?

    1. Yes…gives you no option but trading these out for only players of the same value. I’m even looking at starting non playing rookies around the $200k mark to give me lots of flexibility after r2….gotta love the extra trades.

  30. Keen to squeeze Rowell in but not sure how… Keen to hear your thoughts and suggestions on my team below:

DEF: Lloyd, Short, Whitfield, Hewett, Sinn, O’Driscoll (De Koning, W.Kelly)
Mid: Steele, Titch, Neale, Cripps, Berry, JHF, Daicos, Ward (Rachele, Hollands, Macdonald)

    1. Hi Pumba!

I reckon get rid of either Treloar or Heeney and move Rachele into the forward line.

Then with the spare position in your midfield, you can use that to buy Rowell and you’d still have either about $113k or $142k left, depending on whoever out of Treloar or Heeney you take out.

I would say upgrade English (even though I can understand he might have good POD potential), but you won’t have enough to really upgrade him to anyone that’s great. So unless you come up with another structure that gets you that other premo ruck, I’d use that $113/142k to either upgrade Cripps to someone like Brayshaw, or upgrade Hewitt to someone like Ridley, Dale or Sicily.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

  37. Liked Preuss game the other day, ruckwork, around the ground, marking and his ‘intimidation’- reminded me of ‘Mummy’!
Would love to pick him, as I can see him averaging 105, if he gets continuity into him. Would have a floater to carry him- English & Hayes- DPP.
What was others thoughts on his game the other day- stats were pretty good I reckon.

Just trying to talk myself into big risk?!?!
    People’s thoughts?

    1. He did look impressive but you always run the risk that for every game he has over 100 he will probably throw a 60-70 score in there too. I wish I could have him at R3 but with all the other rookies looking pricey I just can’t swing it. Good luck with whatever you choose.

      2

    2. i like him, even if he will miss round 1. I was looking at starting English at R3 anyway, so Preuss will spend round 1 sitting on bench and English at R2

he really only needs to score 70+ to be a good investment

Start with Grundy, see how its all going, pick either gawn or darcy or ? wait for Pruess to max out and gawn/darcy to lose some coin and lock and load

      1. Have 2 spots for Clarry/Touk/Steele… it changes daily.

I’d go by your buy structure.

Melbourne supposedly have a tough first 6 rounds so it might be worth waiting on Clarry and bringing him in then. Things get much easier after that

    J. Lloyd, D. Rich, J. Crisp,

    (S.De Koning, C. Dean)

    J. Macrae, J. Steele, C. Oliver,

    J. Dunkley, Z. Butters, S. Coniglio,
    J. Rachele, F. Maginess, C. Comben
    (W. Kelly, E. Hollands)

A slim $9700 left in the bank
Could probably swap the Bont for a Mitchell, or even Parish/Brayshaw, and add some extra funds to keep for the inevitable first few rounds adjustments and/or redistribute rookies based on who get named.
I just have my doubts over Titch going over 105-110ave and I have a feeling Bont will fire up straight away.
Rookies are on the expensive side of the board but looks like this is the way to go at the moment.

Any feedback is always welcome and much appreciated!
Good luck for the season everyone

    1. Hey Mass.

Very solid looking G&R side. I’m just not sure we get this many rookies R1.

I’ve had to drop to 4 Premo Mids + Berry to get an extra defender best a 22 mid-pricers F3/4 . It seems safer to only rely on selecting the best 4 rookies in Defence and Forward. ( 2 on field each )

“Straight outta” Comben is unlikely, to get a start and you really don’t want him on field.

I really hope we get the rookies but I would have a back up plan just incase.

Great to see you back and good luck in 2022.

Decided to pass on the hype on Butters and Horne-Francis because tbh I’m not sold on them so opted for Treloar and Rowell by getting money elsewhere. Also opting for Marshall over Grundy hoping the DPP will be slapped on Marshall so I can upgrade one of my FWDs for Grundy down the line and save money now. Also not a terrible POD

    1. Nice team Simon, love the premo selections. I do think JHF is a must have though. He will very likely gain DPP in round 6 which would allow you to swing him fwd and gain an additional defence cover (McCartin) down back, which you may need considering you’re only 3 deep down back

Rowell a late inclusion after double tons in pre-season. Lack of low priced rookies has meant only three uber mids, but at a pinch might still have 13/14 keepers….including Butters and cogs. Witts v Cats confirmed he’s ready to go, and great value. Would love to get English as f4/5/6 for that lovely playing dpp and bye rds flexibility…but, can’t have em all.

    1. to get Butters to English you only need an extra 20K. Why not just Fade Macrae for Miller/oliver?

All three of Macrae/Miller/Oliver are great keeper choices and will be in your team at some point. Macrae won’t hurt you with a 170 the way Oliver will and won’t be a late Captain option like Miller (who has the same bye)

Bringing in Macrae over the bye should be easy since the Big Rucks are both round 14, you can sideswap and then bank cash over 2 rounds (or use a boost) to get them back for round 14 (and you have english as cover)

  50. Hi guys. I have two options below.

option 1 averaging a combined Of roughly 170ish plus a trade eventually on ward who may only make similar $$ to Rowell anyway & then option 2 a combined AVG of 200ish and potentially no trades. Rowell could be M8 imo and English/Marshall eventually swung forward to bring in a gawn mid season and hopefully cheaper. In my head option 2 is a clear winner but am I getting something wrong? Which combination would you all pick…

    TD: English/Marshall & Rowell (M5)

    1. I’d say go where you think the value is. If you like having 5 elite mids go for it. Nothing wrong with locking in 600+ points from 5 captain options.

Defensive rookies are pretty short. Counting Cogs you have 13 premos. I’d look to split one of your defensive premiums into 2 midpricers to get some of those rookies off the field.

  54. Hi guys

A first time poster had a decent go last year for the first time in many many years to show my young son.

Very interested in peoples thoughts in my team. Going for players that will generate cash to upgrade. I think many of the top end premo will reduce in value somewhat.

    1. Hey, Jarrad.

Great to have you around and a very good second crack with a workable structure.

A key SC principle is that of “Top 6/8”. When selecting starting premos, you want to go for those that will finish Top 6/8 in their respective lines; i.e the 6 highest scoring FWDs and DEFs and 8 highest scoring MIDs that you could possibly have on field. Starting premos are known as “keepers” as you’ll keep them all season. You pretty much want 12 keepers at a minimum, with the midfield keepers capable of VC/C worthy score.

Now midpricers present value, can score well and are an important part of a team, but let’s start with your premos.

You look a little thin on proven premo keepers. Some of the midprice/budget options could end up keepers (will touch on them) but starting with those at premium price relative to their line: none of Houston, Jackson or Taranto (as a MID) will be close to Top 6/8. Sack the three of them right off the bat. If you rate Taranto, select him as a FWD.

Jelly is an elite talent but his injury profile is a nightmare, but that’s up to you. Dawson’s battling a calf issue and didn’t play the pre-season games, so I’d sack him.

With McInerney, he looked phenomenal over the weekend and his on the precipice of a breakout but don’t pick him for that reason alone. You need to have confidence he can score 90+ and end up a keeper at D6. If so, no problems.

Now to Cripps, Serong and Lipinski. Setting aside how they’ll score, having those 3 is structurally a bad call. Awkwardly priced, costing you a MID premo. I’d also have Rowell and Berry ahead of the both of them, with Berry close to a must have. Think you should merge two of them into one Top 8 MID premo. None of them will score the 120 required to be Top 8 midfielders but, of course, they present value. We’ll take them one by one.

Cripps: For me, he’s cooked. Been experimented with too much, only a matter of time before his body breaks down again. He’s also a poor decision maker leading to poor DE (disposal efficiency) and has a lopsided K:H (kick to handball) ratio. That said, if you disagree you need to back him to return to a triple digit average to warrant selection. Atleast 105.

Serong: strong draft stock, good MID role, only a matter of time before he breaks out. Pretty much needs to 95-100 to warrant selection and even then there’s still a case that the 450k he costs could be better spent.

Lipinski: was slated to get a good CBA load at the Pies but copped an ankle injury in the AAMI game. No longer relevant.

In sum, Serong and Cripps are priced as M8 keepers. Select them only if you really think they’re going to pop off. Line through Lipinski. Consider Rowell and Berry. Merge some of those midpricers, trim back Houston, Jackson and Taranto (as a MID atleast) and then invest in players a shot/lock for Top 6 or 8 in their respective lines.

Bit of a long one but thought typed feedback would be preferable to the usual thumbs up/thumbs down.

      Best of luck, Jarrad.

    1. What I mean is that while it’s good to have 102k rookies if they show up the best rookie is someone who is playing. It’s much better to have your placeholder rookies as more expensive (123k or more) and then bank the money if/when cheaper rookies show up.

Rookies/Cash Cows are how we get the money for going full premium and teams fall behind if their rookies aren’t generating money. For this reason it’s typically more important to get rookies right then premiums who will usually score well whoever you pick.

Heeney and Butters are both priced at around 90 points if they do what we expect them to do they might score 110 at the best average. If so they are 20 points cheaper then what they will produce.

Someone like will Brodie is priced at 43 and he’s been scoring 90 in the practice games at Fremantle after moving to a new team.

So you will likely get similar points with Brodie (or Xeri/Ralphsmith) to butters/Heeney at worst be 20ppg behind. (Until you upgrade) while saving 200k (which usually equals 40 points) that puts you 20points in front in terms of overall value.

If you spread that money around your bench it will make you even more money as the most undervalued players are playing rookies.

Currently your team has 3 forward rookies who likely wont play (hollands/pedlar*) due to injury and long is popular as a captains trick pick.

So currently your F6 will be getting you 0 points unless Parker plays but as a 102k rookie on the bulldogs that’s also unlikely given he didn’t play in their practice match vs brisbane.

So that’s 400k on your team that’s just doing nothing.

In your defence Odriscoll and sinn both are possible but not likely to play every week at D6. If DeKonieg scores well that helps you but his role is one that doesn’t usually score very well and people think he’s better to have as a non playing rookie. You want your playing rookies to be more likely to score 60 points . Bench rookies 45-50 points depending on price.

So right now your bench is likely not making you any money and you have 0 points at F6 and probably not that many points at D6

That’s why if you downgrade from one of your Forward Premos to an expensive rookie (200k tier) and spread that money around your team will be much better.

  57. Hi gunboat and others

Had a massive change up after taking on your advise gunboat. The rookies will obviously depend if they get a game round 1.

Def: Ridley, Short; Whitfield, wanganeen, o’driscoll,p mccartin, (de konning, uwland)

Mid: McRae, steele, Oliver, Neale, Rowell, berry, jhf, n daicos (j ward, c McDonald, g clark)

Ruck: Gawn, Grundy ( j Hayes)

Fwd; Dunkley , Heeney, butters, coniglio, Brodie, rachele ( n long, n martin )

Would be grateful for any feed back
As to would my sons (Jacob) effort above if you have time gunboat or others.

    1. This looks like a much better team.

Greg Clark is injured right now so not the best person to have.

I would move one of O’driscoll/ wanganeen/uwland onto the midfield bench So you have that M/D swing

McCartin and Dekoneig are also D/F so it would be worth it to have one of them (or another D/F) in your forward line (replace long) so you can cover both lines.

You probably have a few too many 102k rookies/loops who won’t play. Replacing long with Dixon (102k R/F) who will play seems better.

Structurally most coaches are going with 4 premos on the defensive line due to a lack of rookies. If you wanted to swapping Heeney (big risk) for Sicily or another similarly priced player (via Dekoenig DPP) would give you a much better balance to your side.

      Something like

Def: Ridley Short Whitfield Sicily wanganeen McCartin: odriscoll ?????

Mid: McRae Steele Oliver Neale Rowell berry JHF Daicos : Ward McDonald Uwland

      Rucks: Gawn Grundy Hayes

Fwds: Dunkley butters cogs Brodie rachelle SDK: Dixon Martin

Don’t know how much cash you have left but try and get a 123k rookie in that ??? Spot.

      1. If you want extra cash for better rookies having Chapman at D4 instead of Sicily or equivalent is probably the way to go.

11-13 keepers (depending on Cogs/Rowell) is enough to start this year

Just depends on which rookies show up.

  59. Hi everyone and good luck this year
Have seen a lot of teams having to decide which one to leave out to start with from McRae,Oliver,Steele and Touk – would like some opinions as to which one and why? Please

    1. I left out Miller, I think his output will be impacted by the return of Rowell however I am likely to be completely wrong and he will become goat!

      1. Touk and Rowell are like Oliver and Petracca, Neale and Lyons, and any combination of mids from the doggies. They complement each others game.

    2. McRae
To Keep: He’s jack Macrae the best scorer in the game. Lots of early games means VC lock.
To fade: he’s consistent so he won’t burn you with a huge score and won’t get much more expensive. Early VC means you miss out on big VC scores by locking in his 130.

      Steele
To keep. Gets points from tackles so high floor big ceiling. Scored better with Marshall who’s back healthy.

To Fade??? Round 12 bye? To me he’s a 100% lock. High floor and goes big.

      Oliver
To keep: He’s Oliver. High floor huge ceiling will get you a few 170+ scores a season and you don’t want to miss those
To fade: Round 14 bye like a lot of other premos. Melbourne have a hard first 6 games so you could hope for a price drop and get him as your first upgrade. (Via Boost if nessecary)

      Miller
To keep. Looks on fire. More help should boost his score especially playing with an actual ruck this season. Plays late most of the early season so is a great backup Captain option

To Fade. Macrae is 23k more, has the same bye and a better scoring history.

    3. It’s a difficult decision, but in my case captain options dictated that I had to leave out Oliver because I have Gawn.

  60. Interested in thoughts:

B: Crisp, Ryan, Hewitt, Sinn, McCartin, O’Driscoll
M: Macrae, Steele, Miller, Neale, Cripps, Berry, Daicos, Ward
    R: Gawn, Grundy
F: Dunkley, Treloar, Butters, Coniglio, Brodie, Rachele

    1. Really good team.
The only downside in my opinion is the backline being quite weak with two keepers and one mid pricer. I don’t think Hewett finishes in the top 6 or even 10. I would get rid of one of Treloar or Cripps and strengthen the backline because I don’t think Sinn or O’driscoll play round one either. Put sam de Koning on ground instead of one of them

  62. Have been looking at various ruck structures. 2 premo, 1 premo + mid, 1 mid + 1 low price etc etc. Just something to add to melting pot. Obviously Preuss suspension doesnt help however it looks as if he may well be used as the number 1 at GWS. Also heard Luke Beveridge say that English will be played as prominent ruck not so much forward with support. Given Preuss when returns will be No 1 and most likely generate significant cash even with 75-80 ave, was looking at going possibly Grundy/English/Preuss rd 1 with either a Hayes(stk)Dixon(WC) on bench fwd then swap English to fwd Rd 2. Might allow Preuss to be loophole Rd1 and if a cheaper fwd rookie stinks it up Rd 1 and gets dropped English/Preuss would cover it. Main worry is if English would be consistent enough but priced around the Heeney/Butters range and they are prone to the odd 50-60. Just putting it out there, thoughts?
