Reserves Rookie Review – Round 13

Written by Alza on June 16 2021

Welcome back for Round 13, bye week number 2. Most VFL sides didn’t play again due to the lockdown but majority should be back on deck this weekend. Bit of a theme among the reserves sides here with some experienced players in the teams either out of form or out of favour with their respective coaches. This makes it tricky for rookies to get a game unless they are performing consistently. Good luck for the chaos that Round 14 will be, I know I will only have 14 or 15 playing.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Sturt 12.8.80 def. by Adelaide 14.6.90

Nicholas Murray $181k DEF – 16 disposals (11 kicks), 5 marks (2 contested), 4 tackles and had 4 rebound 50s – 72 (56/4)
Luke Pedlar $162.3k MID – 17 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 5 clearances and had 5 inside 50s – 69 (54/7)
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 18 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0, 9 marks (3 contested), 3 tackles, 4 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s and 37 hitouts – 128 (103/10)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 11 disposals (5 kicks), 9 tackles and had 5 clearances – 58 (72/8)
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 10 disposals (6 kicks) and kicked 1.1 – 36 (55/10)
James Borlase $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (9 kicks), 3 marks (2 contested), 7 tackles and had 4 rebound 50s – 79 (54/10)
Patrick Parnell $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (8 kicks), 5 marks, 5 tackles and had 5 rebound 50s – 73 (57/2)

Verdict: Strachan keeps doing his thing in the reserves, the defensive 3 were all solid with 16 touches each although Newchurch and O’Connor were reasonably quiet. Pedlar was spoken about last week in the media so could be one to watch after their bye but I’m not sold on his scoring or job security with Hately dominating the reserves next in line

PORT ADELAIDE
Eagles 17.7.109 def. Port Adelaide 6.5.41

Martin Frederick $172.6k DEF – 17 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.0 and laid 6 tackles – 77 (78/4)
Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 15 disposals (7 kicks), 4 marks (2 contested), 3 tackles, 4 clearances and 32 hitouts – 88 (83/8)
Taj Schofield $102.4k MID – 23 disposals (11 kicks), 4 tackles, 6 clearances and 5 inside 50s – 82 (70/8)
Jed McEntee $102.4k MID – 12 disposals (5 kicks), 4 marks and laid 4 tackles – 52 (73/9)

Verdict: Frederick was good but only had the 6 kicks, Hayes and Schofield were among the best with good all round games. McEntee was a bit down on his potential in his Port debut

VFL

GWS GIANTS
GWS 17.12.114 def. Aspley 9.11.65

Tanner Bruhn $155.7k MID – 24 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 2.0, 6 marks, 3 tackles and 6 inside 50s – 106 (90/4)
Nick Shipley $123.9k MID – 29 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks and 3 tackles – 94 (91/6)
Zach Sproule $123.9k FWD – 15 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks, 3 tackles, 4 inside 50s and 6 hitouts – 73 (84/5)
Kieren Briggs $123.9k DEF/FWD – 22 disposals (17 disposals), kicked 1.0, 6 marks, 5 inside 50s, 28 hitouts and 6 fees for – 124 (111/5)
Jacob Wehr $117.3k DEF – 17 disposals (all kicks) and took 10 marks – 85 (69/5)
James Peatling $102.4k DEF/MID – 23 disposals (18 kicks), 12 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 100 (97/6)

Verdict: Bruhn, Shipley and Briggs continue to be among the main contributors for the Giants reserves. Wehr and Peatling in his GWS debut were both good down back with 10 marks each. As we have seen in previous years the rookies may find it hard to get regular games in the AFL side although they are performing very well in the VFL

GOLD COAST
Sydney 16.8.104 def. by Gold Coast 17.5.107

Jeremy Sharp $141.8k MID – 26 disposals (12 kicks), 8 marks and 4 inside 50s – 96 (92/5)
Alex Davies $102.4k MID – 12 disposals (4 kicks), 5 marks and laid 5 tackles – 64 (62/6)
Aiden Fyfe $102.4k DEF/MID – 10 disposals (7 kicks) and took 3 marks – 45 (73/6)
Joel Jeffrey $102.4k DEF – 14 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 3.0, took 7 marks and 4 inside 50s – 75 (53/6)

Verdict: Sharp was solid in the middle in the Suns comeback win with Jeffrey the hero kicking the match winner among his 3 goals. Fyfe was quieter than usual which makes it hard to debut with the Suns VFL side having some experienced players stuck down there ready to come into the AFL side

SYDNEY
Sydney 16.8.104 def. by Gold Coast 17.5.107

Matthew Ling $163k DEF – 21 disposals (14 kicks) and took 7 marks – 85 (64/7)
Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 12 disposals (11 kicks) and took 4 marks – 49 (58/7)

Verdict: Ling was good with over 20 touches although I think Ling and Gould may struggle to get into their strong back six if the Swans remain a genuine finals chance with experienced players playing VFL

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Claremont 14.6.90 def. Peel Thunder 12.11.83

Lloyd Meek $213k RUC – 17 disposals (6 kicks), 3 tackles and 37 hitouts – 94 (94/6)
Stefan Giro $170k MID – 14 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 51 (74/6)
Luke Valente $123.9k MID – 26 disposals (16 kicks), 6 marks, 5 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 101 (75/7)

Verdict: Meek had another good game with 17 touches and 37 hitouts but will rely on injuries to force his way back in. Valente was among the best with a team high 26 touches and even got a mention in the press conference on the weekend which can only be a good thing

  1. Great as always, Al.

Doesn’t look like we’ll be getting any timely rookie reinforcements for the mega bye, ugh.
