Reserves Rookie Review – Round 15

Written by Alza on June 30 2021

Almost back to a full schedule this week with almost all teams playing although we could be due for a week or 2 off now as a lot of the country is in lockdown unfortunately. Plenty of players pushing for selection but with most teams just about finalised we start to hope that some rookies are held back until next season. Apologies for the short write ups over the last 2 weeks as I was away on holiday but hopefully this week has plenty to go through.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
West Adelaide 9.4.58 def. by Adelaide 14.10.94

Ben Davis $191.8k FWD – 21 disposals (9 kicks) and took 5 marks – 71 (53/10)
Luke Pedlar $162.3k MID – 16 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 clearances and had 8 inside 50s – 63 (55/8)
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 13 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks (2 contested) and had 33 hitouts – 69 (100/11)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 23 disposals (13 kicks), 8 marks (2 contested) and 4 rebound 50s – 85 (67/10)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 17 disposals (8 kicks) and had 6 clearances – 50 (69/9)
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 12 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 1.2 and took 3 marks – 44 (54/11)
Nicholas Murray $102.4k DEF – 8 disposals (6 kicks) and took 3 marks – 31 (52/5)
Patrick Parnell $102.4k DEF – 20 disposals (11 kicks) and 5 rebound 50s – 64 (55/3)

Verdict: Davis was good with 20 touches but at his price is not very relevant. Strachan was below his usual standards but still dominated the ruck with 33 hitouts while Murray was quiet. Worrell was among the best with his 8 marks and Parnell and O’Connor were both good as well. There are spots up for grabs in the Crows side so keep a look out for potential inclusions

PORT ADELAIDE
North Adelaide 18.12.120 def. Port Adelaide 6.8.44

Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 16 disposals (7 kicks), 4 marks (1 contested), 3 clearances and had 27 hitouts – 85 (82/10)
Jed McEntee $102.4k MID – 21 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 0.2, 4 marks, 9 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 98 (75/8)

Verdict: Hayes continues his solid year but will probably not get his chance this year with McEntee leading his side in tackles while also getting 21 touches

VFL

BRISBANE
Brisbane 8.6.54 def. by Geelong 26.16.172

Tom Fullarton $164.8k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (5 kicks) and took 4 marks – 46 (73/7)
Connor Ballenden $146.1k FWD – 18 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 2.0, 7 marks and had 7 rebound 50s – 85 (89/8)
Tom Joyce $123.9k FWD/MID – 23 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 69 (83/5)
Blake Coleman $117.3k FWD – 15 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 5 tackles – 74 (62/8)
Carter Michael $102.4k MID – 16 disposals (11 kicks), 3 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 58 (82/8)

Verdict: Fullarton was down on his usual standard with no hitouts this week. Ballenden was among the best and even kicked a couple of goals this week. Joyce was good all round with Coleman and Michael decent in their big loss

CARLTON
Northern Bullants 14.16.100 def. Carlton 10.8.68

Lochie O’Brien $180.5k MID – 12 disposals (9 kicks), 4 marks, 4 tackles and 4 free kicks against – 49 (69/7)
Luke Parks $173.9k DEF – 11 disposals (9 kicks) and took 6 marks – 54 (67/2)
Josh Honey $123.9k MID/FWD – 14 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 0.3 and took 3 marks – 60 (73/7)
Sam Ramsay $123.9k MID – 28 disposals (19 kicks), 4 tackles, 5 inside 50s and had 6 rebound 50s – 96 (80/6)

Verdict: After kicking 3 last week Honey only managed 3 behinds this week. O’Brien and Parks were quiet but Ramsay was very good all round with 28 touches in the middle

COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 16.8.104 def. Frankston 9.11.65

Mark Keane $217.2k DEF – 10 disposals (8 kicks) and took 5 marks – 40 (40/1)
Trey Ruscoe $179.6k FWD – 18 disposals (15 kicks), 4 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 65 (47/4)
Tom Wilson $136.1k FWD – 16 disposals (11 kicks) and took 8 marks – 65 (77/5)
Will Kelly $135.4k FWD – 8 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 3.0, 3 marks and had 5 hitouts – 60 (52/5)
Finlay Macrae $130.4k MID/FWD – 19 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks and laid 3 tackles – 81 (82/3)
Max Lynch 123.9k RUC/FWD – 19 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 36 hitouts and 4 free kicks for (1 against) – 112 (86/4)
Oliver Henry $120.9k FWD – 13 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 6 marks – 63 (78/4)
Liam McMahon $117.3k FWD – 9 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 4.1 and took 3 marks – 68 (39/5)
Jay Rantall $113.2k MID – 25 disposals (10 kicks), 6 marks and laid 5 tackles – 91 (86/4)
Jack Ginnivan $102.4k MID/FWD – 10 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 3.0, 3 marks and laid 3 tackles – 71 (56/6)

Verdict: Collingwood had their first game of VFL in about 6 weeks. Kelly and Ginnivan were good with 3 goals each as was McMahon who kicked 4 in his best game of the year. Macrae and Rantall were very good and will likely get another chance to impress interim coach Harvey. Lynch was among the best but he will need to be a bigger presence up forward to regain his spot with Grundy back

ESSENDON
Casey 13.14.92 def. Essendon 6.8.44

Zach Reid $166.8k DEF – 14 disposals (9 kicks), 6 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 63 (78/2)
Ned Cahill $163.2k FWD – 14 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 2.1, 6 marks and laid 4 tackles – 86 (83/6)
Tom Hird $123.9k MID – 18 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 marks and laid 4 tackles – 79 (64/7)
Nick Bryan $123.9k RUC – 9 disposals (5 kicks), 5 marks and had 34 hitouts – 76 (84/6)
Sam Durham $102.4k DEF – 10 disposals (5 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 44 (56/6)

Verdict: Reid was solid as was Bryan with 34 hitouts against the more experienced Daw and Weideman. Cahill and Hird were good all round with goals, marks and tackles

GWS GIANTS
GWS Giants 13.15.93 def. Sydney 8.7.55

Jake Stein $200.1k DEF – 10 disposals (7 kicks) and took 3 marks – 41 (63/3)
Zach Sproule $185.3k FWD – 10 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1 and took 4 marks – 49 (76/7)
Conor Stone $162k FWD – 5 disposals (3 kicks) – 23 (49/4)
Tanner Bruhn $161.6k MID – 16 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.1, 3 marks and had 5 inside 50s – 60 (80/6)
Nick Shipley $123.9k MID – 7 disposals (4 kicks) and laid 3 tackles – 30 (81/8)
Jacob Wehr $117.3k DEF – 16 disposals (15 kicks) and took 12 marks – 81 (71/6)
James Peatling $102.4k DEF/MID – 18 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 8 marks – 90 (100/8)

Verdict: Stone re injured his hamstring and Shipley was concussed early on in this game. Peatling and Wehr were very good down back with plenty of kicks and marks between them, I am hoping neither debut this year now looking towards next year. Bruhn was solid but hard to see him coming back into the side in the short term

GEELONG
Brisbane 8.6.54 def. by Geelong 26.16.172

Zach Guthrie $212.7k DEF/MID – 19 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks and laid 4 tackles – 85 (98/2)
Ben Jarvis $139.2k DEF/FWD – 17 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 3.2, 8 marks and had 5 inside 50s – 96 (71/7)
Oscar Brownless $123.9k FWD – 30 disposals (17 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 6 inside 50s – 94 (78/7)
Sam De Koning $123.9k DEF – 15 disposals (7 kicks), 5 marks and had 5 hitouts – 55 (59/5)
Francis Evans $123.9k FWD – 18 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 4.2 and took 6 marks – 90 (53/3)
Max Holmes $121.8k MID/FWD – 23 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 0.2, 6 marks. 3 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 87 (68/4)
Shannon Neale $117.3k RUC/FWD – 10 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 4.1 and took 4 marks – 75 (43/4)
Nick Stevens $117.3k DEF – 15 disposals (13 kicks), 5 marks and laid 4 tackles – 75 (74/6)

Verdict: Geelong’s depth showed in this huge win and I don’t see any rookies getting games consistently from here on. Jarvis, Evans and Neale had their best games of the season kicking 11.5 between them. Brownless and Holmes were very good with plenty of touches and Guthrie, De Koning and Stevens also performing well

GOLD COAST
Postponed

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Box Hill 15.19.109 def. Aspley 7.5.47

Keegan Brooksby $206.9k RUC/FWD – 18 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 2.0, 9 marks, 4 tackles and had 12 hitouts – 119 (81/8)
Finn Maginness $195.6k MID – 14 disposals (7 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 54 (62/5)
Conor Nash $193.4k FWD – 28 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks and laid 6 tackles – 113 (76/6)
Tyler Brockman $172.7k MID/FWD – 10 disposals (9 kicks), 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 49 (52/5)
Josh Morris $145.1k FWD – 11 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.3, 3 marks and had 5 inside 50s – 55 (54/7)
Emerson Jeka $123.9k FWD – 20 disposals (18 kicks), kicked 4.2, 11 marks and had 8 inside 50s – 117 (95/6)
Ned Reeves $123.9k RUC – 12 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.2, 3 marks, 5 tackles and had 35 hitouts – 100 (72/7)
Connor Downie $117.3k MID – 14 disposals (10 kicks) – 45 (52/7)
Jack Saunders $102.4k MID/FWD – 19 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks and had 5 inside 50s – 75 (56/6)
Jackson Callow $102.4k FWD – 15 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 6 marks – 71 (68/2)

Verdict: Brooksby and Jeka were among the best in their good win and are both having outstanding years in the VFL. Nash had his best game of the year with 28 touches but hasn’t been a good scorer at AFL level. Brockman and Downie seem destined to be stuck in the VFL this season unless they can have more impact with Saunders and Morris now ahead of them. Callow was good in his 2nd game for Box Hill as was Reeves as he dominated the hitouts with 35 in a bid to win his spot back

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Casey 13.14.92 def. Essendon 6.8.44

Neville Jetta $194.9k DEF – 16 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks and laid 6 tackles – 86 (79/5)
Kade Chandler $161.2k FWD – 14 disposals (9 kicks) and took 7 marks – 67 (84/4)
Jake Bowey $117.3k MID/FWD – 27 disposals (19 kicks), 7 marks, 4 tackles and had 4 rebound 50s – 111 (74/6)

Verdict: Melbourne have a very short injury list and it shows with the team that is lining up for Casey. Jetta was solid as he usually is but seems to be a fringe player and not relevant anyway. Chandler was decent but Bowey was among the best with 27 touches in a well-rounded game

NORTH MELBOURNE
North Melbourne 14.4.88 def. Werribee 12.11.83

Tom Campbell $333.1k RUC/FWD – 19 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0, 6 marks and had 49 hitouts – 130 (124/2)
Connor Menadue $283.8k DEF – 16 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 tackles and had 6 inside 50s – 73 (76/3)
Charlie Lazzaro $188.5k MID – 17 disposals (6 kicks) and laid 9 tackles – 83 (69/2)
Eddie Ford $117.3k FWD – 16 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 2.1, 6 marks and laid 5 tackles – 85 (62/7)

Verdict: Campbell was great again with 49 hitouts and is a good chance to return. Menedue, Lazzaro and Ford were all solid with Ford being talked about in the media for the last few weeks is one to look out for but may rely on goals to score well at AFL level

RICHMOND
Sandringham 14.12.96 def. Richmond 10.6.66

Riley Collier-Dawkins $237.9k MID – 27 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.0 and took 4 marks – 84 (85/4)
Rhyan Mansell $160.9k DEF – 13 disposals (8 kicks) and took 4 marks – 48 (59/2)
Patrick Naish $155.6k MID – 31 disposals (20 kicks), kicked 2.0, 8 marks and had 6 inside 50s – 122 (104/5)
Thomson Dow $146.1k MID – 22 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks and laid 5 tackles – 87 (69/5)
Matthew Parker $141k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (10 kicks), 5 marks, 5 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 66 (89/2)
Hugo Ralphsmith $134.3k MID/FWD – 14 disposals (8 kicks) and took 4 marks – 49 (40/4)
Will Martyn $123.9k MID – 18 disposals (8 kicks), 3 marks and laid 5 tackles – 74 (84/7)
Ben Miller $123.9k DEF – 16 disposals (13 kicks), 8 marks, 5 tackles and had 8 rebound 50s – 91 (51/6)
Maurice Rioli $117.3k MID/FWD – 5 disposals (3 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 33 (54/7)

Verdict: Collier-Dawkins and Naish were excellent kicking 2 goals and getting plenty of touches. Dow, Parker and Martyn were solid all round as was Miller who was spoken about earlier in the week. Could almost put a line through Rioli to debut this year unless something changes although the Tigers could give some rookies some more game time if they can’t reach the top 4

SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Sandringham 14.12.96 def. Richmond 10.6.66

Darragh Joyce $186.4k DEF – 22 disposals (18 kicks), 10 marks and had 7 rebound 50s – 96 (75/4)
Paul Hunter $153.3k RUC – 18 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 8 tackles, 6 inside 50s, 42 hitouts and 4 frees for (5 against) – 124 (100/5)
Oscar Clavarino $123.9k DEF – 12 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 57 (66/6)

Verdict: Joyce and Hunter were among the best with good all round games. Joyce may get another run but Hunter seems to be back up to Ryder and Marshall

SYDNEY
GWS Giants 13.15.93 def. Sydney 8.7.55

Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 10 disposals (6 kicks) and had 4 rebound 50s – 29 (54/8)

Verdict: Only Gould in this game for Sydney but he had a quiet day. He wasn’t the only one though but he only got the 10 touches and would be best for SuperCoach if he stays in the VFL this year

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
Coburg 7.10.52 def. by Footscray 13.6.84

Lachlan McNeil $239.9k MID – 14 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0, 6 marks and laid 5 tackles – 78 (62/2)
Jordon Sweet $226k RUC – 13 disposals (3 kicks), 5 tackles and had 29 hitouts – 85 (93/4)
Lewis Young $213.2k DEF – 17 disposals (13 kicks), 7 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 68 (90/5)
Jamarra Ugle-Hagan $207.3k FWD – 12 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 4 marks – 53 (51/6)
Ben Cavarra $194.9k FWD – 19 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 2.1, 4 marks and had 6 inside 50s – 88 (77/6)
Buku Khamis $123.9k DEF – 16 disposals (11 kicks), 6 marks and had 6 rebound 50s – 66 (70/6)

Verdict: McNeil and Sweet were good all round as Footscray remain undefeated with Cavarra continuing to perform although isn’t a good scorer at AFL level. Young was quiet by his standards and Ugle-Hagan was okay and I think he will debut soon as the Dogs will want to have a look at him and are a lock for top 4 currently

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Peel Thunder 12.9.81 def. by East Perth 13.10.88

Lloyd Meek $213k RUC – 21 disposals (7 kicks), 5 marks, 3 tackles and had 30 hitouts – 103 (95/7)
Stefan Giro $170k MID – 20 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 2.1 and took 3 marks – 79 (75/7)
Luke Valente $123.9k MID – 18 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks, 3 tackles and had 5 inside 50s – 78 (75/8)
Nathan O’Driscoll $117.3k MID – 26 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 0.2, 10 marks and laid 5 tackles – 119 (60/10)
Joel Western $117.3k MID – 18 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks and laid 3 tackles – 82 (69/8)

Verdict: Great games by all here in a narrow loss. Meek, Giro and Valente continue their good years and would be among the next 4 or 5 to come in. O’Driscoll had his best game of the year with 26 touches and 10 marks

WEST COAST
East Fremantle 6.12.48 def. by West Coast 15.9.99

Jamaine Jones $283.3k FWD – 21 disposals (7 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 68 (100/2)
Harry Edwards $252.2k DEF – 11 disposals (6 kicks) and took 3 marks – 43 (54/5)
Bailey Williams $207.8k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1, 3 marks and had 17 hitouts – 65 (69/5)
Luke Foley $161k DEF – 20 disposals (12 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 6 rebound 50s – 67 (70/7)
Mark Hutchings $157.6k MID/FWD – 26 disposals (17 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks, 9 tackles and had 6 inside 50s – 126 (101/6)
Zane Trew $102.4k MID – 22 disposals (7 kicks), 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 74 (71/9)

Verdict: Jones was solid but not quite as good as his previous game in the WAFL. Foley and Trew were good with 20 touches each but it was Hutchings who was excellent and should be next to come in after the Eagles bad loss on the weekend
