Reserves Rookie Review – Round 18

Written by Alza on July 21 2021

Welcome back for Round 18. Only the SANFL and WAFL this week so not much action this week. As we move into the last 5 weeks and as we became aware after last weekend make sure we all have back up options as more and more players and teams are going to have to isolate or change their plans.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
North Adelaide 14.11.95 def. Adelaide 6.5.41

Ben Davis $191.8k FWD – 24 disposals (17 kicks), 7 marks (1 contested) and had 4 rebound 50s – 90 (56/12)
Luke Pedlar $162.3k MID – 14 disposals (9 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 3 clearances – 58 (55/9)
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 25 disposals (13 kicks), 11 marks (4 contested), 3 clearances, 4 rebound 50s and had 45 hitouts – 147 (106/14)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 24 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks (2 contested), 3 tackles and had 7 rebound 50s – 85 (67/13)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 4 marks and 5 tackles – 65 (72/12)

Verdict: Davis had a great game back in the reserves but may find it hard to get back in straight away. Strachan dominated all around the ground as he does while Worrell was also very good down back and could come in for Murray. O’Connor was solid but fins himself on the fringes like Davis

PORT ADELAIDE
West Adelaide 11.5.71 def. by Port Adelaide 13.6.84

Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 17 disposals (11 kicks), 7 marks (2 contested), 3 clearances, 4 rebound 50s and had 32 hitouts – 101 (85/13)
Jackson Mead $123.9k MID – 27 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 tackles, 6 clearances and had 7 inside 50s – 78 (69/5)
Dylan Williams $123.9k MID/FWD – 9 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.2, 4 marks and gave away 4 free kicks – 42 (56/12)

Verdict: Hayes bounced back taking 7 marks this week, Mead got plenty of the ball in a great game pushing for a debut while Williams seems to be a low possession sort of player currently

VFL

No VFL due to COVID restrictions

WAFL

PEEL THUNDER (FREMANTLE)
Peel Thunder 9.12.66 def. by Claremont 11.9.75

Lloyd Meek $213k RUC – 11 disposals (5 kicks), 3 tackles, 5 frees against (2 for) and had 22 hitouts – 55 (90/8)
Stefan Giro $170k MID – 13 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.0 and took 4 marks – 57 (71/9)
Joel Western $117.3k MID – 21 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 3.0 and took 6 marks – 86 (72/10)

Verdict: Meek returned but had a quiet game by his standards as did Giro with only the 13 touches. Western was very good with 3 goals and 21 touches and is a chance to come back into the AFL again this year

WEST COAST
Subiaco 12.6.78 def. West Coast 9.4.58

Luke Foley $197.1k DEF – 16 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 5 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 71 (72/9)
Isiah Winder $117.3k DEF/MID – 11 disposals (6 kicks) and laid 3 tackles – 45 (56/3)

Verdict: Foley was solid down back again but the Eagles seem to have settled on their backline. Winder was quiet again and I don’t think he gets another run this season

  1. Really needed Williams for port to do more to maybe get a run and save my forward line from 2 doughnuts. Oh well. Thanks for the updates.

    1. Ugh. Same, Glen.

Was hoping he’d save me from a donut with Dusty and Langford benched. Need Brockman to hold with Wingard returning, otherwise I’m eating a second donut – a couple of fat bastards we’re becoming lol.

      1. Unfortunately it’s unlikely with Duursma, Rozee and Butters all a chance to come in this week. Purely based on stats as I haven’t watched him play but I think Williams’ downfall is pressure. Only averaging 2 tackles a game. He has kicked 21.11 from 12 games but 1 of those was a bag of 6.

  2. Probably one of the most valuable reviews that have appeared on this site for this year, long may it stay into the next and beyond.
Really gives good insight on the rookies that will be selecting into the new year.. love it
