Reserves Rookie Review – Round 6 2022

Written by Alza on April 27 2022

After it seemed like we had plenty of rookies we now have lost a few to different reasons such as injury, form or peaking in price and being traded. A good time to mention that players with good job security are worth holding sometimes even if they have reached their max price. There’s a few rookies playing well in the reserves but still not many defenders to bolster our defensive line.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Central Districts 11.10.76 def. by Adelaide 14.17.101

Mitchell Hinge $266.7k DEF – 15 disposals (11 kicks) and took 3 marks – 57 (57/1)
Ben Davis $204.5k DEF/FWD – 19 disposals (14 kicks), 7 marks and had 5 rebound 50s – 75 (60/4)
James Borlase $123.9k DEF – 16 disposals (12 kicks) and took 5 marks – 71 (59/4)

Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF – 23 disposals (18 kicks), 7 marks, 3 tackles and had 7 rebound 50s – 96 (69/4)

Verdict: Hinge came down to the SANFL and failed to capitalise to make his return to the AFL. Parnell and Worrell were good down back again finding a fair bit of the ball and taking 7 marks each while Pedlar was among the best for Adelaide with 23 touches and kicking 2 goals.

Verdict: Mead and Mayes played their first games in the SANFL and were good through the middle with over 20 touches and laying plenty of tackles. Visentini is the main ruckman now and had 26 hitouts in his best game so far.

VFL

BRISBANE
Brisbane 11.18.84 def. Port Melbourne 6.9.45

Harry Sharp $193.2k MID – 20 disposals (15 kicks), 6 marks and laid 3 tackles – 81 (67/2)
Thomas Berry $171.5k FWD – 24 disposals (14 kicks), 6 marks, 6 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 108 (100/3)

James Tunstill $117.3k MID – 22 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 3.0 and took 7 marks – 99 (68/4)
Mitchell Cox $102.4k DEF/MID – 18 disposals (14 kicks), 8 marks and had 4 inside 50s – 76 (66/4)

Verdict: A lot of the Lions players had good games here although they may not all be relevant. Berry continues to play well in the middle and would be close to coming into the AFL side. Michael and E. Smith had solid games with over 20 touches and 3 marks each and Coleman and Tunstill both kicked 3 goals.

CARLTON
Werribee 10.14.74 def. by Carlton 14.9.93

Jack Carroll $123.9k MID – 27 disposals (20 kicks), kicked 2.0, 6 marks, 3 tackles, 3 clearances and had 8 inside 50s – 110 (86/2)
Alex Mirkov $123.9k RUC – 7 disposals (4 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and had 42 hitouts – 75 (65/5)

Verdict: Carroll was among the best with his 2 goals and 27 touches, he’s been good since returning from injury. Mirkov won the ruck battle here with 42 hitouts and may get a chance soon with Pittonet being injured over the weekend.

COLLINGWOOD
Essendon 10.13.73 def. by Collingwood 20.11.131

Finlay Macrae $206.8k MID – 21 disposals (14 kicks), kicked 1.1, 3 marks, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50s and had 4 frees for – 76 (85/5)

Aiden Begg $123.9k RUC – 10 disposals (5 kicks), 4 tackles, 9 hitouts, 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s and had 4 frees for – 51 (45/4)
Will Kelly $123.9k DEF/FWD – 10 disposals (8 kicks), 7 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 46 (44/5)

Verdict: Macrae played well again with 21 touches and 5 clearances, must not be too far from coming in. Quiet day for Wilson and Kelly with just the 10 touches each. I’ve mentioned Begg here due to the injury to Grundy, they will give Cox the first crack and even if Begg does come in he probably isn’t an option for us with his low scoring.

ESSENDON
Essendon 10.13.73 def. by Collingwood 20.11.131

Zach Reid $173.1k DEF – 17 disposals (13 kicks), 8 marks and had 4 rebound 50s – 75 (51/4)

Verdict: Solid games down back for Reid and McDonagh finding a fair bit of it and taking several marks. Bryan won the ruck battle and did some decent work around the ground also. Hird played his best game for the Bombers here with 2 goals and 27 touches to probably be best on ground.

Kade Chandler $123.9k FWD – 20 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.1, 6 marks, 6 tackles and had 5 clearances – 99 (73/5)
Bailey Laurie $123.9k FWD/MID – 15 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 tackles and had 4 inside 50s – 67 (69/5)
Fraser Rosman $123.9k MID – 22 disposals (17 kicks), 5 marks, 4 inside 50s and had 4 rebound 50s – 84 (55/5)

Verdict: I don’t see Daw getting many games but thought he deserved a mention here for a decent game. Chandler played well with 20 touches, a goal and 5 clearances as did Rosman with 22 touches although this was one of his better games.

Verdict: Lazzaro was solid through the middle with 20 touches and 5 clearances while McGuiness was decent but down on his usual output. Comben played as the 3rd ruck and only managed 2 hitouts and gave away 5 frees.

RICHMOND
Richmond 9.10.64 def. by Casey 13.9.87

  1. Love this post every week.

I’m super tempted to go Clark early. He frees up so much cash , and I could loop him as he plays the first game. I’m pretty sure he will hold his spot , the main worry is his body holding up. It mainly depends on if Rosas is named as I don’t really want to fork out for Hobbs or Callaghan.

    Thanks again Alza!

  2. Appreciate the write up, Alza.

Comments and responses not on fire like they usually are due to the paltry rookie prospects that many of us a willfully ignoring lol.

DEFs are where I’m most concerned rn. SDK and Gibcus, two popular bench rookies, posted their season best scores over the weekend and look set to make some good coin – great. Problem is there’s literally going to be no one to downgrade them to – maybe Fahey or McDonagh eventually, but no one solid within the next month.

Forces our hand. We’ll either have to go 1 down elsewhere and 1 up DEF rookies to premos (which could be tricky as many of us are already 4 deep plus Daicos anyway).

Will be interesting to see how rookies coming through/or lack thereof impact which lines we upgrade first.

    Cheers, Alza.

    1. Thanks all for the kind words.

Agree GD, the current rookies in the backline are going well but nothing of note to downgrade to so will have to hold or ugrade the def line first.
