Connor Ballenden $146.1k FWD – 19 disposals (15 kicks), 5 marks, 5 rebound 50s and 13 hitouts – 86 (107/3)

Verdict: Fullarton was quieter this week but Ballenden keeps getting it done as a bit of a utility. Sharp didn’t fill the stat sheet but hopefully he isn’t too far away and Michael who I suspect is being used as a loophole for 2.1% of coaches was outstanding with 26 touches
CARLTON
Essendon 8.4.52 def. by Carlton 14.17.101

Corey Durdin $117.3k MID/FWD – 6 disposals (4 kicks), kicked 1.0, 3 marks and 5 tackles – 52 (47/3)
Verdict: Solid games from O’Brien and Honey and with injuries to the Blues could be outside chances to come in although Setterfield and Newman may be first in line
COLLINGWOOD

Trey Ruscoe $179.6k FWD – 16 disposals (7 kicks), 4 marks and 3 tackles – 57 (42/2)

Verdict: Good games from all of the players listed in the narrow win. Henry could come back in after getting injured in Rd 1 on 9 SC
ESSENDON
Essendon 8.4.52 def. by Carlton 14.17.101
Ned Cahill $161.2k FWD – 23 disposals (15 kicks), 6 marks, 4 tackles and 9 inside 50s – 94 (85/3)
Alec Waterman $148.4k FWD – 11 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 1.1 and took 3 marks – 41 (64/2)
Tom Hird $123.9k MID – 14 disposals (12 kicks) and took 5 marks – 64 (55/3)
Verdict: Cahill continues his strong season and could be due a recall while Waterman injured his ankle but played on. Isn’t on the injury list at this stage but seems like he’ll need to string a few good games together to earn a recall
UWS GIANTS (GWS)
UWS Giants 14.10.94 def. Southport 8.16.64
Matt Flynn $273k RUC – 12 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 1.1, 5 marks, 17 hitouts but gave away 4 free kicks – 60 (61/2)

Jacob Wehr $117.3k DEF – 27 disposals (19 kicks) with 10 rebound 50s – 85 (62/3)
Verdict: Flynn looks set to spend a few weeks in the VFL with Mumford to play 3 games before a rest according to Leon Cameron. Bruhn came down and was among the best, Shipley and Briggs continue their good form and Wehr backed up last week’s performance with another good one with 27 touches but Riccardi apparently played defence and had 40 touches with a huge 19 marks so would be next in line
GEELONG
Sydney 8.12.60 def. by Geelong 9.10.64
Max Holmes $121.8k MID/FWD – 26 disposals (15 kicks), 4 marks and 6 inside 50s – 78 (75/2)
Verdict: Holmes continues his good form trying to earn a recall, Miers out injured might open up a spot
GOLD COAST

Verdict: Very similar and strong games from all 3 players here but I think Brodie, MacPherson and Fiorini are next in line with strong showings
BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Sandringham 15.8.98 def. by Box Hill 19.14.128
Conor Nash $193.4k FWD – 20 disposals (12 kicks), 9 marks and 6 inside 50s – 81 (82/2)

Connor Downie $117.3k MID – 12 disposals (5 kicks), 3 marks and laid 3 tackles – 50 (46/2)
Verdict: Nash and Brockman played well with 46% of coaches hoping Clarko gets Brockman back in sooner rather than later. Downie was okay but nothing to force his way in

Jake Bowey $117.3k MID/FWD – 23 disposals (15 kicks), 7 marks, 3 tackles and 6 rebound 50s – 92 (83/3)
Verdict: Good games by all but unlikely to see an inclusion with the more experienced players like Harmes and Weideman next in line
NORTH MELBOURNE
North Melbourne 3.6.24 def. by Casey 19.17.131
Verdict: No relevant players in their VFL side this week with only E. Ford and P. Walker playing in the flogging
RICHMOND
Werribee 18.16.124 def. Richmond 6.7.43
Callum Coleman-Jones $161.2k RUC/FWD – 13 disposals (9 kicks), kicked 1.0, 7 marks and 13 hitouts – 71 (98/3)
Will Martyn $123.9k MID – 17 disposals (7 kicks), 6 marks and laid 4 tackles – 70 (74/3)

Maurice Rioli $117.3k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (9 kicks) and laid 8 tackles – 72 (61/3)
Verdict: Decent games by all with no stand out and no one likely forcing their way in. P. Naish $180.5k MID played after getting 5 minutes as the sub the night before and with 18 disposals and 6 tackles should hold his spot
SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Sandringham 15.8.98 def. by Box Hill 19.14.128

Thomas Highmore $117.3k DEF – 30 disposals (22 kicks), 14 marks and 10 rebound 50s – 130 (102/2)
Verdict: Connolly and Highmore among the best with 30 touches each and 53% of coaches are hoping Highmore has done enough to get back in. Hunter was okay but will need injuries to get back into the side
SYDNEY
Sydney 8.12.60 def. by Geelong 9.10.64
Logan McDonald $251.3k FWD – 14 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 3.0 and took 8 marks – 86 (54/2)

Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 18 disposals (13 kicks), 3 marks and 8 rebound 50s – 59 (65/3)
Verdict: McDonald bounced back kicking 3 goals while Gould was serviceable as all coaches await his debut. Campbell among the best but with Buddy, Rampe and Hewett expected to come back he might need a few good games
FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
Northern Bullants 6.11.47 def. by Footscray 12.18.90

Ugle-Hagan didn’t back up his bag last week with only the 1 goal while Sweet does what he does. McNeil was an unused sub for the AFL side

Verdict: Great games by all as they reversed the Derby result with Giro, Meek and Treacy the standouts. Spots are up for grabs at Freo with Giro and Treacy the most likely

Thanks Alza for another outstanding review.
All the players you mentioned for Fremantle except Josh Treacy and Luke Valente, are on the flight to Qld as part of the 30 man squad.
Any thought as to whether Meek gets a gig or is he just insurance for the current big men? Worse still sub…
I would imagine it is for insurance but he has impressed in the WAFL and the coach said he was looking to play him again. He has passed Josh Treacy as the next in line. I doubt if they would use him as sub as they need versatility to cover any position.
Thanks CT, great work by you also
Great work Alza. Invaluable resource.
Out of curiosity, where are you sourcing these stats from?!
Great stuff
Thanks AJ. SANFL and WAFL websites, Footy Live app are the main ones but I also look at the clubs’ websites
Just so you know the Giants haven’t called their reserves team UWS since about 2015. That university changed to WSU in 2016, and then from 2018 they’ve just been called GWS Giants like the senior team.
Great work Alza. Echo what everyone else has said – great resource to have especially during the early part of the season.
