Rookie Review – Round 3 2024

Written by Alza on April 2 2024

Not the high scoring week for our rookies like last week but the Dogs players made the most of their easy match up against the Eagles. Our defensive rookies continue to be an issue but there are a few more options now with DPP additions still 3 weeks away (after round 6).

Darcy will be the main target for everyone this week but apart from him there isn’t a heap of decent options unless we target players that have already risen in price like Hore and Clark. This isn’t ideal but with shaky job security for some, it might be the safest option.

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk.

The Good: Roberts had an excellent game down back with 27 touches and 8 marks although he did make a couple of mistakes but that is attacking game the Swans play from the back. Sanders continued his good form with 20 touches, 4 marks and 6 tackles as one of the best rookies this season.

The Bad: Chesser had another quiet game with just 7 touches and no marks or tackles.

Conway played his 1st game of the year and held his own. In wet conditions he had 11 touches at 82%, 5 marks, 4 tackles, 1 goal and 18 hitouts. He’s expensive but could be an option at R3.

The Good: Gallagher had an excellent game against the Eagles with 16 touches, 7 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals. Dempsey has been an excellent pick so far as he had 22 touches with 11 contested, 6 marks and 7 tackles. Khamis was also great against the Eagles with 19 touches at 90% with 9 marks, 6 intercepts and 6 one percenters.

The Bad: Wilson had a quiet day with 9 touches at 44% with 2 marks. Duursma didn’t back up his great game last week. He had 7 touches and 3 marks but shouldn’t be any issues with him keeping his spot in the side.

Trade Targets
Players you should be looking to bring in this week:
Draper – lack of options
Darcy – scoring and job security

  1. Good stuff Alza. Might want to check, but I’m pretty sure the first lot of DPP additions are after R5 this season.

    1. With the early byes they are a week later this year, so after Round 6 once everyone has played the same number of games. Then back to normal after that. After round 11 and 17

  2. A bit more expensive, but Mullin looked really good yesterday for Geelong I thought. Draper probably priority defender rookie for me, but wouldn’t mind Mullin too if you still have two injured rookies on the bench.

  3. Being a member of the (well) over 21’s club, I was wondering if there was a difference between; “At the end of Round 6…..”, which we often hear, as well as; “For the start of Round 7…..”, for the change to DPPs….. maybe I’ll just take my meds and have a good lay down……
