Rookie Review – Round 4 2022

Written by Alza on April 12 2022

A mixed bag this week in rookie scoring with popular picks in MacDonald and Ward failing to produce while the 3 stand outs Daicos, JHF and Rachele had fantastic games. If you traded out Rachele it is unfortunate but hopefully you made use of that cash elsewhere. At the end of the day they are rookies so they will have some bad games but it’s about knowing if that is their true level of scoring or just a bad game.

Players on the bubble are shown with an asterisk.

The Good: Massive game from O’Driscoll with 2 goals and 20 touches although 55% efficiency held him back slightly. Still cheap enough if you’re in need of a defensive rookie. SDK had a great game which didn’t quite translate to SC. 9 disposals with 7 contested and 8 intercepts to go with 5 one percenters, could argue his 62 was a little under.

The Bad: McCartin copped a big hit partway through the 3rd quarter after starting fairly well. He didn’t manage a stat from that point on but apparently is doing well. Hinge was subbed out around 3 quarter time with a hip injury, looked pretty innocuous but he may miss some time which is unfortunate because has been very solid for us on field. Grainger-Barras couldn’t back up his game last week only managing 6 touches in a heavy defeat.

Bye for now: Mountford, Joyce, Kreuger, Sinn

The Good: Daicos has done it again, 32 touches at 78% and 7 marks for his 125, was even held back with 5 clangers. JHF started just as North did with probably a 70 point first half. He dropped away in the 2nd as the whole team did but still managed 23 touches with 11 contested. Erasmus is on the bubble after having a decent game with 15 touches including 8 contested.

The Bad: Ward and MacDonald just couldn’t get into the game and posted low scores. They weren’t the only ones but with them playing Easter Monday it is not ideal considering we won’t know if they are playing until Saturday afternoon. McInnes couldn’t back up his debut only having 6 touches.

Bye for now: Soligo, Sharp, Black, Sheldrick, Giro, Owens

Jack HAYES (FWD)STK$187,600DNP (84)-15

Preuss was massive again but we will have to wait another week to bring him in after a big elbow to Mundy’s face will have him missing a game. We can’t trust him on field without back up but he is a great bench option if you have some spare cash. Dixon had his best game doing well around the ground, well done if you could get him on field. With Nic Nat out for a while now he should get an extended run and make good money for us.

Bye for now: Williams, Jamieson

Marcus WINDHAGER (MID)STK$117,30033 (33)-

The Good: Rachele bounced back to his best kicking 3 goals from his 19 touches, massive 2nd half showing everyone what he is capable of. Naish is the rookie that most coaches missed and keeps getting the job done 23 touches at 78% and a goal. Martin is an SSP gift having another good game with 22 touches and a goal. Well done to those that traded in Dow this week, made some good money and backed up his score from last week. 15 touches at 80% with 7 contested and a huge 30 pressure acts. Rosas played his first game for the year but needed 3 goals to get to his score, not an ideal downgrade target. Ronke was the sub again and made a huge impact in just over a quarter, 11 touches at 81% and a goal. Great game but his JS is a worry at his price.

The Bad: Maginness was the sub and played a half but had a poor score due to using the ball at 53% from his 13 touches. Tex Wanganeen was barely sighted only registering 2 kicks and Mayes only had the 5 touches in a forward role.

Bye for now: O. McDonald, Lazzaro, Pedlar, Ford, Baldwin, Evans

    1. Hi Aarts, JS is good and should score ok although his scoring might be up and down. His BE is getting high now with 54, so won’t make a lot more cash and don’t believe his cash generation will be good enough.
I am trading him to free up cash for odriscall.

    2. I could be mistaken but I think I read somewhere that Xerri got a knock to his nose which broke it.
Therefore was playing under a bit of duress and why Goldy had one of his better games as he played more ruck and Xerri went forward.
I am still quite optimistic on him still.

    3. Xerri doesn’t qualify as he’s priced too high to feature.
I wouldn’t be too worried about him, he only needs 1 decent score to boost his cash gen which as a ruckman is very achievable. Only issue is a rest, North had a bye in the VFL

      1. Thanks Alza but sorry, I don’t understand. Xerri was $208k prior to r3 increases. So now Daicos and JHF are now over 300k they no longer qualifies as rookies for review?
