Round 12 Review

Written by Dane on June 7 2021

Melbourne (14.13.97) defeated Brisbane (11.9.75)
     1. Max Gawn (138). Big Max put in a big effort for those who chucked the VC on him all the way back on Friday night, finishing with 17 touches (11 contested), 4 tackles, 31 hitouts and 1 goal.

    2. Christian Petracca (130). The midfield bull had a game high 724 metres gained from his 26 touches, but he also put in some other nice score boosting stats with 6 tackles, 9 clearances and 2 goals.

    3. Jarryd Lyons (128). Bounced back from last weeks disappointing score with a solid display in the middle of the ground that included 28 touches (18 contested) with 8 tackles and 6 clearances.

    4. Dayne Zorko (120). His ninth ton of the year came courtesy of 22 disposals, 6 marks, 10 tackles and 1 goal as he cements himself as the top 6 forward option in Supercoach.

    5. Harris Andrews (117). Ran at a very good 90% DE from his 21 touches of the footy, while also hauling in 14 marks (plenty of intercepts) to round out the top 5.

Other 100+ scores: Tom McDonald (112), Steven May (106), Zac Bailey (103)

Disappointment: His last two scores of 56 and 64 have taken his season average under 100, and for that, Christian Salem earns this award. Lachie Neale (84) had 25 touches (14 contested), but it was his first game back so that return isn’t too bad.

Rookies: James Jordon (82) was once again fantastic as he collected 20 touches with no clangers in an extremely high (for him) 86% game time, while the only other previous rookies of relevance here are Robertson (75), who was super too, laying 8 tackles and having 12 touches, and Prior (61), who had 14 touches.

Injuries: The only concern that has seemingly come from this game is a recurrence of Ryan Lester’s hamstring injury.

Sydney (13.14.92) defeated St Kilda (12.11.83)

    1.  Brad Crouch (141). The Saints recruit had his highest score of the year (fifth ton overall) as he collected 38 touches (14 contested), with 7 tackles and 7 clearances.

    2. Jack Steele (140). The skipper joined Crouch in the middle of the ground with a ripping stateline that included: 31 touches (16 contested), 8 clearances, 9 tackles and 1 goal.

    3. Tom Hickey (136). Returned from a week off with another huge game (best of the year actually) as he finished with 21 touches (14 contested), 7 clearances and 16 hitouts.

    4. Tim Membrey (128). His second big score in as many weeks came from 20 touches (11 contested), with 2 goals and 8 marks.

    5. Jack Higgins (112). Could’ve had a huge score if it wasn’t for wasted opportunities in front of goal. Finished the afternoon with 1 goal from 23 touches and 12 marks.

Other 100+ scores: Jake Lloyd (108), Callum Wilkie (102), Patrick Ryder/Luke Parker (101), Callum Mills (100)

Disappointment: This one goes out to Chad Warner, who I’m sure many a coach was holding until his bye round, but this season low 39 from 12 touches might force it out a week early.

Rookies: 195K F/R Joel Amartey (66) played his second game (one in 2020) and performed pretty admirably in just 73% game time, collecting 14 touches, 6 marks and 9 hitouts. St Kilda second gamer Clavarino only gathered 8 touches of the footy down back, but did net 45 points from those, while just above him on 48 points was Byrnes. Pick number 4 in last years draft Logan McDonald (42), returned for his first game since round 5, while Tom Highmore (19) was the medical sub.

Injuries: Luckless skipper Jarryn Geary (shoulder) joined recruit Mason Wood (hamstring) on the bench to finish the game.

Adelaide (10.13.73) defeated by Collingwood (12.6.78)

    1. Rory Laird (144). Just ran around by himself all day to collect a huge 40 touches (16 contested) of the footy, while also adding 5 tackles and 7 clearances to his game.

    2. Reilly O’Brien (137). One of the options for Grundy this week (if coaches decided to pull the trigger) was ROB, and he was super as he put up a statline of 19 touches, 7 marks, 4 tackles and 27 hitouts.

    3. Paul Seedsman (136).
Scored his fifth ton of the year with a ripping game through the middle of the ground, picking up 27 touches (708 metres gained) and slotting 2 goals.

    4. Jack Crisp/Jamie Elliott (120). The games most durable player put up his fifth ton in a row thanks to 31 touches and 9 marks, while Elliott returned with 6 goals (4 in the first quarter) and 14 touches.

    5. Brodie Smith (119). Adelaide’s backman scored his first ton since round 5 thanks to 26 touches with a massive 773 metres gained, a game high.

Other 100+ scores: Steele Sidebottom (117), Taylor Walker (116), Ben Keays (109), Scott Pendlebury (108), Brayden Maynard (100)

Disappointment: Once again a lot of coaches may have been counting on some rookies this round, which makes Rowe’s 11 touch, 32 point game a frustrating one.

Rookies: Rowe wasn’t the only disappointing rookie score from this game, with the 9 touch, 15 point game of O’Connor, the 8 touch, 14 point game of Rantall and the 7 touch, 21 point game of Hamill all being equally, if not worse, disappointing. Other rookie scores that were underwhelming were Butts’ return of just 43, Lynch’s second game score of 46 and Murphy’s effort of 37. In saying all this, there were some great returns from rookies/cash cows here so lets run though those to finish off. Thilthorpe (76) did some very good things up forward, ultimately finishing with 9 touches, 4 marks and 1 goal, while at the other end, Bianco (75) made sure he’ll be traded in next week with a 16 touch, 1 goal game of his own. Lastly, Collingwood’s new wingman Poulter turned in another great score, securing 20 touches of the footy, taking 10 marks and kicking 1 goal for his score of 89.

Injuries: Magpie midfielder Brayden Sier was subbed off at half-time with a jaw injury.

Essendon (12.12.84) defeated by Richmond (19.9.123)

    1. Darcy Parish (166). Another game and another Parish masterclass as he broke the all-time club-record for disposals in a game as he grabbed 44 of them. Within that, he had 16 contested touches, 11 clearances, 8 marks, 5 tackles and 737 metres gained to win the Yiooken medal for BOG.

    2. Zach Merrett (137). Parish’s partner in crime had his best score of the year thanks to 32 touches (14 contested) to go with 7 tackles and 5 clearances.

    3. Kyle Langford (126).
Bettered his career best score from last week by a solitary point with another impressive display that included 28 touches, 10 marks, 1 goal and 589 metres gained.

    4. Shai Bolton (119). Kicked a couple of goals in the late Tigers surge that boosted his score, but with a statline of 20 touches, 3 goals with 90% DE, he would’ve had a great score anyway.

    5. Jack Graham (117). The underrated midfielder played brilliantly to finish with 22 touches, 2 goals, 5 tackles and 5 marks to round out the top 5.

Other 100+ scores: Jason Castagna (105), Dustin Martin (102)

Disappointment: Premium defenders Ridley (80) and Short (78)  couldn’t crack the ton here, while 75 was the worst score of Nick Hind’s super 2021.

Rookies: Callum Coleman-Jones looks as set as Bianco to be welcomed into many a team next week, as he returned another great score of 86 from 13 touches and 10 hitouts, while his hyphenated teammate Collier-Dawkins was down the other end of the scoring scale, only registering 27 points. He led a host of cash-cow disappointment scores, with Waterman (57), Perkins (38) and Harrison Jones (17) all struggling. The news was a little better for owners of Nik Cox though, as he put together a 23 touch, 1 goal, 95 point game that puts him right up there for a rising star nomination. 217K defender Patrick Ambrose was the sub, playing his first game since 2019, as he collected 5 touches and 22 points.

Injuries: Zippy midfielder Andrew McGrath was struck down with a knee injury very early in the contest and was hence, subbed out, while he was joined on the pine later on by veteran Zaharakis (hamstring) and the injury-plagued Dion Prestia.

Carlton (10.13.73) defeated by West Coast (14.11.95)

    1. Liam Ryan (128). The best score of Ryan’s career came on Sunday afternoon as he kicked 4 goals from 17 touches and 9 marks to be the difference in the game.

     2. Sam Walsh (124). Continued his outstanding year with another 30 disposal effort that also included 1 goal and 11 marks. Averaging 115.

    3. Nic Naitanui (121).
Another option for those off-loading Grundy was the Eagles ruckman, who had another great score thanks to 15 touches (11 contested), 9 clearances and 33 hitouts.

    4. Andrew Gaff (110). The Eagles running machine scored his first ton since round 8 with a 30 disposal effort that also included 1 goal and 6 clearances.

    5. Zac Williams (103). The Blues prize recruit put up his second ton of the year with a 24 disposal (22 kicks), 1 goal game which also included a game high 602 metres gained.

    Other 100+ scores: Zilch

Disappointment: Not an incredibly relevant Supercoach player but he’s had a decent year thus far, which makes Ed Curnow’s 10 touch, 42 point game an underwhelming score.

Rookies: The Blues youngsters in Owies (55, 8 touches, the usual couple of goals) and Stocker (71, 16 touches off half-back) both played their role as they continued their cash generation. The news in this game came from the Eagles, with a number of youngsters playing today. Lets start with the worst of them, Williams (11), who had 6 touches and isn’t worth considering at this point in his career. After that, there’s a little more excitement. Luke Edwards, son of Crow great Tyson, made his debut with a solid 15 touch, 63 point game in the backline, while Luke Foley (67) played his first real game of footy for the year (sub in round 8) to have 16 touches and 1 goal, he’s a 127K defender. The others worth mentioning are Jermaine Jone’s score of 74, Harry Edwards score of 83 and 223K midfielder O’Neils score of 50. The only issue with picking any of these guys mentioned above are that the Eagles have many of their best 22 to come back into the team.

Injuries: Adding to the Eagles injury woes was the early substitution of Sheppard, who had concussion, the same as Coleman medal leader Harry McKay. Running defender Nic Newman was flying on 90 before he also finished on the bench with a head knock.

Fremantle (9.11.65) defeated by Western Bulldogs (13.15.93)

    1. Marcus Bontempelli (149). Another ripping game from Bontempelli tipped off the weekend, as he had 27 touches (11 contested), with 7 clearances, 5 tackles, 2 goals and 595 metres gained.

    2. Luke Ryan (133). Patrolled the backline to finish with 25 touches (23 kicks), as well as 10 marks and a game high 669 metres gained.

    3. Jack Macrae (129). Another round and another super Macrae display as he collected 35 touches of the football, nothing really more to be said for this guy.

    4. Andrew Brayshaw (120). Kicked a brilliant banana goal in the first quarter, ultimately finishing with 27 touches (10 contested) with 6 clearances and 3 tackles.

    5. Sean Darcy/Taylor Duryea (112). The Fremantle ruckman had 36 hitouts to accompany his 13 touches and 6 marks, but did finish his night on the bench, while Duryea played his role perfectly to snag 22 touches.

Other 100+ scores: Tom Liberatore (102), Lachie Hunter (101)

Disappointment: It looked like a breakout year was on the way for Adam Cerra, but his price is now just around 400K as he turned in a 67 point game to finish the round. Walters (42) no longer looks like an option.

Rookies: The money makers at the Bulldogs provided another couple of good scores, as Scott (75) and Weightman (80) both hit the scoreboard on Sunday night. For Fremantle, the extremely slow cash generation of Liam Henry might make a tiny jump after he scored 57, a season best, while Josh Treacy’s will skyrocket compared to previous weeks thanks to his 3 goal, 10 touch, 88 point game.

Injuries: There must be something in the water out west as Fremantle did their best to catch up with West Coast by losing important players in this contest. All of Sean Darcy (hamstring), Brennan Cox (hamstring), Griffin Logue (concussion) and skipper Nat Fyfe (shoulder) finished their night on the pine. Furthermore, the Bulldogs had to deal with a shoulder injury to their ruckman Martin who was subbed out, as well as knee concern to English but he did play out the remaining time of the game.

    1. Heens is averaging 95 last 4 games. I picked him up for a lazy $347K.

Give me another 10 of these types. :)’

  1. Can’t find anything on Lester having another hammy issue. Madden on the bench for me atm so wouldn’t mind him coming back in for Lester!
