Round 17 Review

Written by Dane on July 12 2021

Port Adelaide (8.7.55) defeated by Melbourne (12.15.86)

1. Christian Petracca (173). Was the star of Thursday night footy, leading Melbourne to the win with 3 goals from 33 touches, while also contributing 6 tackles, 8 marks, 7 clearances and 788 metres gained.
2. Tom McDonald (132). Along with Petracca, he was very important in Melbourne’s win, kicking big goals (3 of them) from 19 touches and 8 marks.
3. Clayton Oliver (118). Played a big opening half before slowing down slightly. Still recorded 31 touches (21 contested) with 4 tackles and 11 clearances.
4. Travis Boak (112). Played his usual inside midfield role with stints up forward to collect 25 touches (14 contested) to pair with 6 tackles and 7 clearances. Ran at 80% too.
5. Ollie Wines (111). Another good game from Ollie that had 33 disposals (16 contested) with a goal to top it all off.

Other notable scores: Christian Salem (105), Max Gawn (102)

Disappointment: Another rough score for Dan Houston owners this week, he only mustered 48 from 14 touches of the pill.

Rookies: Not so much rookies anymore but cash-cows who have maxed out, this game featured James Jordon and Miles Bergman. Jordon (75) did his usual thing, gathering 21 touches and laying 4 tackles, while Bergman (57) did his usual thing too, having 15 touches and 8 marks. Both guys seem well entrenched in their respective best 22. Hope no one is holding onto Frederick (4), he was the sub once again before collecting 2 touches.

Injuries: Fingers crossed no one went for Butters early, he went down with a knee issue in the third and looks like he’ll miss another chunk of time. Joining him on the bench was Burton, who had a groin problem.

Essendon (11.18.84) defeated Adelaide (2.9.21)

1. Zach Merrett (143). With Parish copping attention, Merrett ran loose once again to grab 35 touches at 80% DE. Also gained 508 metres.
2. Nick Hind (134). After a couple of sub par weeks, Hind bounced back with a 24 disposal (23 kick) game that ran at 95% DE and gained a team high 574 metres.

3. Rory Laird (123). The desk went to work once again in the middle of the ground, collecting his usual 33 touches (14 contested) while also having 7 marks, 6 clearances and 5 tackles.
4. Jordan Ridley (120). Another guy who used his disposal really well to boost his score was the reliable Ridley, as he ran at 95% from his 23 touches. Also grabbed 11 marks.
5. Mason Redman (114). Rounding out the top 5 was the long kicking Bomber was another player who boosted his score with good DE (88%) from his 25 touches and 11 marks.

Other 100+ scores: Brodie Smith (110), Archie Perkins/Jayden Laverde (101)

Disappointment: For his lowest score since round 4, Darcy Parish cops it here. Only had 19 touches and 6 tackles and to be honest, was probably lucky to get to 95.

Rookies: There’s a few to get through here, even though not many coaches would still be fielding these guys. Perkins kicked 3.3 to tie Adelaides score, and along with his 18 touches, that allowed him to hit triple figures. The other Essendon rookie scores read: Cox (81), Waterman (66) and Jones (39). The best for Adelaide was Murray (81), who ran at 100% with his 10 touches, while fellow defender Butts was also good for 78 from 12 touches and 10 marks. After that, it’s pretty grim reading. Hamill was a late in to score a respectable 54, but all of Rowe (42), Davis (27, subbed on), Thilthorpe (25), Berry (15) and Pedlar (4) were unwelcome.

Injuries: Defender Tom Doedee was subbed off after his courage got the better of him and took a massive hit. Langford was subbed off for the Bombers with a hamstring, with the final causality being Seedsman and his currently unknown injury.

Hawthorn (6.10.46) defeated by Fremantle (16.12.108)

1. Sean Darcy (183). The second big score in a row from the man who is pushing himself into everyone’s round 1 team for 2022. Had 25 touches (16 contested), 9 marks, 27 hitouts, 5 clearances, 88% DE and a team-high 486 metres gained.

2. Rory Lobb (132). Could’ve had a massive score if he kicked straight (4.3 in the end), but still produced his best score of the year from the aforementioned goals as well as 13 disposals and 8 marks.

3. Tom Mitchell (131). Another good game from Titch (fifth in a row over 110) as he grabbed 39 disposals to pair with 5 tackles and 7 clearances.

4. David Mundy (121). The ageless Mundy kept the good games coming as he closes in on the 350 game milestone. 30 touches with 2 goals and 452 metres gained were his stats.

5. Lachlan Bramble (120). An outstanding game from Bramble who many a coach was relying on this week. Had 27 touches off half-back with a game high 550 metres gained.

Other 100+ scores: Dylan Moore (112), Nat Fyfe (107), Jonathan Ceglar (103), Liam Shiels (102), Caleb Serong (100)

Disappointment: Looking at the stat line of Brayshaw, one would be disappointed that his 32 touch game that only had 2 clangers and ran at 81% only gathered 91 points.

Rookies: Bar Bramble, there wasn’t anything incredibly spectacular in this game. Treacy could’ve kicked 5 but only had 2 goals in the end to have a respectable score of 74, which was much better than his teammates in Henry (19) and Walker (30). Emmerson Jeka’s (61) third game (first since round 8) was much more promising than the first two, kicking 2 goals from 10 touches, while another returning forward in Brockman (first game since round 4) scored 60 from 14 touches. Mainstay Koschitzke kicked 2 goals to score 53 points, a solitary point more than second gamer Grainger-Barras.

Injuries: A couple of injuries to Hawks backman Scrimshaw (neck) and Jiath (knee) ended their days early.

Carlton (5.14.44) defeated by Geelong (10.10.70)

1. Sam Walsh (158). Played a lone hand for the Blues, outsourcing his next best teammate by 64 points. Had 36 touches (11 contested) with 452 metres gained, no clangers and a great DE 86%.

2. Tom Stewart (127). Played the loose backman role to perfection, collecting 25 touches and 12 marks on the night. No clangers for him as well for a game high 619 metres gained.

3. Zach Tuohy (126).  Quietly having a very good year, scoring seven tons, which has pushed his season average up by 13 points on last year. Had  24 touches with 8 marks and 2 goals while running at 87% DE.

4. Cameron Guthrie (111). Bounced back from last weeks 40 point effort with a 28 touch, 5 tackle game in the middle of the ground.

5. Brandan Parfitt (105). Nothing crazy in his statline but played a well rounded game of 16 touches, 1 goal and 7 tackles.

Other notable scores: Isaac Smith (104)

Disappointment: Big Tom Hawkins is usually pretty consistent but his score of 70 rounds out a bad month that has also included scores of 108, 60 and 58.

Rookies: Young Max Holmes held his spot and played pretty well in this game, collecting 12 touches, laying 3 tackles and kicking 1 goal for 62 points. Stocker and Owies (who weirdly didn’t kick a goal) both score 57, while cash-cow Dow produced 55.

Injuries: Carlton captain Cripps had a left calf knock but played on, while Rohan had his quad iced up super late.

Brisbane (8.15.63) defeated by St Kilda (14.11.95)

1. Jack Steele (149). Led the Saints to another win with a huge 32 touches (12 contested), 6 clearances, 7 tackles, 2 goals and no clangers (90% DE). Six weeks over 125 in a row now.

2. Daniel Rich (128). Drove the Lions forward on many an occasion to have a game high 712 metres gained from 27 touches of the football.

3. Lachie Neale (118). Back from a week off and Neale delivered for anyone who’s still sitting with him. Had 31 touches (13 contested) with 9 clearances and 7 tackles.

4. Luke Dunstan (114). Averaging exactly 100 now after another solid game on the middle of the ground, leading the Saints for metres gained with 530 of them from 29 touches.

5. Dayne Zorko (109). Game 200 for the Lions skipper and he produced what he’s been doing for a vast majority of those, picking up 17 touches, kicking 3 goals and laying 5 tackles.

Other notable scores: Tim Membrey (108), Oscar McInerney/Callum Wilkie (106), Zak Jones (105)

Disappointment: The usually reliable Jarryd Lyons only scored 81 from 21 touches of the football.

Rookies: Thomas Highmore take a bow! Another great score for his owners with 97 points coming from 16 touches (7 marks) running at a great 93% DE. Connolly (43) had his best score yet from 10 touches and 1 goal, while for the Lions money-maker Madden (64) continued his price generation, but Robertson’s is about to go downhill fast after he scored 20.

Injuries: Unfortunately news for Eric Hipwood who may have done an ACL, with important defender Starcevich also joining him on the bench by the end of the game.

GWS (9.10.64) defeated by Gold Coast (10.5.65)

1. Touk Miller (143). Another week and another huge score for Touk as he had a triple double with 35 touches, 14 tackles and 11 clearances. Throw in 16 contested touches, 2 goals and maybe another 3 Brownlow votes.

2. Jacob Hopper (129). Set a career high mark with 41 disposals of the footy to pair with his 5 tackles and 12 clearances. Also had 18 contested touches and 940 metres gained, but did have 6 clangers.

3. Shane Mumford (119). Playing solo ruck Mumford dominated the hitouts with 53 of them in the game. Only had 7 touches but ran at 100% and had 6 tackles too.

4. Brandon Ellis (118). Another guy who hit a career high disposal count in this game with 41 touches (17 contested) playing through the middle of the ground.

5. David Swallow (114). Kicked the winning goal of the game to cap of his game of 27 touches and 9 tackles.

Other notable scores: Josh Kelly (109), Jack Lukosuis (106), Chris Burgess (101)

Disappointment: Rough gig for owners of Tim Taranto, who could only be given 64 points from his game of 18 touches (although he had 6 clangers) but with 12 tackles, it seems a bit rough. In comparison, Matt Rowell had 9 tackles, 7 touches and 1 goal for 70 points, which also qualifies for a disappointing score given his early career reputation.

Rookies: Jeremy Sharp once again performed well, gathering 20 touches out on the wing for 59 points, while Flanders scored 45 which will halt his cash generation. The only one for GWS was Idun who wasn’t great, only scoring 37 from 10 touches of the ball.

Injuries: Big Supercoach injury news came in the form of Lachie Whitfield (34) being concussed in this game and will hence miss round 18 (I think, Leon Cameron after the game said it was a migraine). Shocking news for the Suns as well though, with important midfielder Greenwood hurting his knee very early in the game.

Western Bulldogs (8.12.60) defeated by Sydney (11.13.79)

1. Jordan Dawson (141). Three tons in a row now for Dawson, who is averaging 97 with a low of 73 (which isn’t crazy bad). Kicked 3 goals from 26 touches and 8 marks while gaining over 500 metres for Sydney off half-back.

2. Tom McCartin (134). Career best score here for young McCartin as he hauled in 10 marks to go with 16 touches (9 contested) and ran at 93% DE.

3. Luke Parker (132). Priced at slightly unders for what he is capable of coming into the round, and showed why he should be considered as M8 with a 27 disposal (14 contested), 7 clearance, 1 goal, 4 tackle game.

4. Callum Mills (127). Another week and another great game from Mills who has shown incredible consistency this season. 31 touches again in the midfield to go along with 9 marks and a game high 577 metres gained.

5. Tim English (126). Played close to solo ruck this game and his scoring improved because of it, as he ended with 21 hitouts, 22 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles and 1 goal to round out the top 5.

Other notable scores: Bailey Smith (124), Jack Macrae (116), Marcus Bontempelli/Jake Lloyd (114), Tom Hickey (111)

Disappointment: A couple of coaches looked at Buddy Franklin as an option this year and it’s worked pretty well recently, with scores of 130 and 113, but this weeks 42 wasn’t great.

Rookies: The long awaited debut of Ugle-Hagan didn’t produce much in terms of Supercoach (31 points from 7 touches, 1 mark), but it’s only one game, so keep an eye on him! Weightman couldn’t get close to last weeks effort, only mustering 28 points, but Scott (56) and Garcia (62) weren’t too bad. Joel Amartey was the only Swan in this game who’s currently worth mentioning here, he had a brilliant volley goal amongst 6 touches for 47 points.

Injuries: No subs used up here so hopefully no surprise injuries!

Richmond (11.5.71) defeated by Collingwood (13.9.87)

1. Brodie Grundy/Taylor Adams (140). A 105 point second half propelled Grundy to a great captain score from 22 touches, 1 goal, 5 tackles and 40 hitouts, while Adams rewarded anyone who got him for sub 500K with a triple double of 31 touches (18 contested), 10 clearances, 10 tackles, 1 goal and 567 metres gained.

2. Jayden Short (129). Played a ripping game off half-back, outsourcing the next best Tiger by 37 points. Gained 841 metres from his 31 disposals and only committed 2 clangers.

3. Jordan De Goey (124). I had De Goey to start the season, he burnt me, so I traded him. Then two weeks ago, I brought him back in at 371K for some reason, but so far I’m feeling on top of the world! Backed up his 114 with this 29 touch, 10 mark, 1 goal game.

4. Braydan Maynard (122). Played with heart and soul as per usual off half-back and despite some shoulder soreness, gathered 21 touches and 7 marks for his eighth ton of the year.

5. Jack Crisp (117). The incredibly consistent Crisp scored his ninth ton of 2021 thanks to 33 disposals, 10 marks and a team-high 601 metres gained on Sunday evening.

Other notable scores: Jamie Elliot (111), Scott Pendlebury (109), Jordan Roughead (107)

Disappointment: Dustin Martin couldn’t fully impose himself on this game, only scoring 74 points from 19 touches. Sidebottom (57) has had a couple of down weeks. Also, Macrae’s incredible run of 30+ touches came to an end with just 25 disposals.

Rookies: Not many great scores to run through here, with the only scores being over 50 being a 69 from Richmond youngsters Collier-Dawkins, who had 14 touches, 5 tackles and 1 goal and Mansell (61) who also had 15 touches. Apart from that, the scores from rookies/cash-cows read: Naish (49), Murphy (47), Ruscoe (39), Bianco (33), Henry (29) and finally Thomson Dow (27).

Injuries: Youngster Will Kelly was subbed off around half-time.

  1. Great work as always Dane!
Any idea what happened to Isaac Smith in the last quarter? He didn’t register a stat.
Also FYI L. Edwards will probably be the sub tonight as he was the only emergency for West Coast that didn’t play WAFL
