Thanks for the shout out.
After years of finishing top 2-5% and getting close a few times, I had a good think this year about what I wanted to do. My initial plan was to make sure I had a few premiums that I would keep all year as PODs. We research so much that all our teams end up the same so I desperately wanted to have a few different selections that also wouldn’t damage my scores too much if they didn’t fire every week or that I could pivot to someone else if it all failed horribly.
That’s not to say that I don’t take advice. Sites like SCT are invaluable to me; especially pre-season. And a refresh on the simple rules like Father Dougal puts out there are a good timely reminder.
I took Lachie Neale, Jack Steele and Zach Merret as the three who were low owned. I also started LDU and trusted the Gawn/Grundy combo. Had McAndrew at R3 just for the cash.
Also, heading into the season my plan was making the choice to have no more than 4 premiums for round 12 and no more than 5 in round 15 and 16 on the bye. That meant I didn’t have Heeney, Smith or Nas for the first 16 rounds.
Lastly, I promised myself that I would be aggressive with trades and get to full premium as soon as I could. I did trade out some rookies before their peak but I got good replacements in who scored higher and kept me scoring well.
I didn’t trade round 1 (I never do unless I miss a rookie I clearly need or there is a long term injury). From round 2 onwards until round 11, I used 23 trades including 4 boosts. Trading through the early byes helped me significantly. Round 4 saw me score 2145 (Grundy’s 184 as C and Gawn’s 175) which put me at 151 for the week and I went from 26K to 2K overall.
This had me starting the byes with 15 premiums. Using 11 trades including my last boost during the byes I was able to get to full premium coming out of the byes. I had 18 premiums for the 3 of the bye rounds and 17 premiums for round 16. Since then I have used 3 trades, upgrading Steele to Nas, freeing up cash by jumping on Herbert and replacing Butters with Smith.
During the byes, the carnage of round 12 impacted me. I was ranked 43k for the round but from there, I scored over 2000 each week which kept me on the tail of the leaders.
I have 3 trades left; one of which will need to be used on Holmes. I can swing Nas into Def and pick up almost any player as I have $50k in the bank. I do like Heeney’s run after this week so it’s likely I will pick him up but depending on how Jordan scores this week, I may have a tough choice on my hands.
I have had my share of bad luck. I started Gulden who I had to drop round 2, Rozee and Petracca went out Round 3 and jumped on Xerri round 3 and had to trade him round 4. I’ve since bought Petracca back but its not going well. I’ve had Scerri stinking up my FWD bench all season and Burton from the Tigers isn’t a great pick either.
All in all, I am pretty happy with what I’ve managed to pull together. I can only hope now that I can choose the right VC/C combos that others above me are not. I also hope that the two trades I will have left after this week are two more than anyone else.

Great job all. Been following Jesse’s progress for some weeks now.Really hoping for those players who are high up from sct to keep on going. I’m playing vicariously through you guys as my team is the stinkiest of excrement this season. Might add a small shout out to the public league I’m in which has players at 71 ,286 , 536 , 1350 odd and a few more ins 3k and an another couple under 5k. Tough gig for a public!!
