Where and When: MCG, Friday, March 22, 2019, 7:50pm
Last time they met: MCG, round eight, 2018: Collingwood 5.15 (45) lost to Geelong 9.12 (66)
In a scrappy, low-scoring affair, the Cats kicked four of the opening five goals, restricting the Pies to just one goal by half-time, and set up a matchwinning break with three successive majors in the third term. The Pies were two short for much of the second half.
What it means for Collingwood: A win for the 2018 runner-up is crucial given it faces Richmond and reigning premier West Coast in the following fortnight.
What it means for Geelong: This season has been billed as the last chance for the Cats to succeed with this group, and a victory here would certainly have the fans dreaming about another flag.
How Collingwood wins: The Magpies’ ‘Swoop Squad’ of small and medium-sized forwards, comprising the likes of Jordan De Goey, Jamie Elliott, Jaidyn Stephenson, Travis Varcoe and Josh Thomas, has the potential to pose enormous headaches for the Cats, who will be without important stoppers Zach Tuohy and Jed Bews.
How Geelong wins: Although Brodie Grundy is expected to take the upperhand in the ruck, the Cats’ midfield is more than capable of gaining the ascendancy, which would provide power forward Tom Hawkins with his best chance of exposing the new-look Pies’ defence.
The stat: Geelong has won 11 of its past 14 round one games, while Collingwood has won just two from seven under Nathan Buckley, and has been beaten in its past three season openers.
The match-up: Joel Selwood v Levi Greenwood. The Magpie desperado (ranked No. 380 in the Official AFL Player Ratings) appears set to renew his heated relationship with the Cats skipper (No. 53), against whom he has a good record. Selwood will be hellbent on getting one back on him.
Mottsy’s Tip: Collingwood by 10

Thoughts on who’s more reliable to score well on field
TU: B.Scott
TD: Constable
Not the popular option but I like Scott only because he’s versing the Freo midfield instead of Coll. But it’s a coin flip.
VC option:
TU: Danger
TD: Grundy (against Stanley)
Last seond decision!
T/u crisp (allowing enough cash to turn hind into duursma in the mids)
T/d whitfield (meaning stick with hind or swing drew to mids and get schultz(freo) in forward line)
Take cripps vc score or take punt on grundy as captain could the rain effect the output aswel by the way
Also have Cripps, I am punting on Grundy…over in Perth though so had not considered effect of rain.
Even so, rain equals more stoppages which means Grundy should leverage even more off his clearance / contested possession / tackling / hitout dominance.
Well I was very wrong…not a good start.
Tonight I will pray for you
Collingwood v Geelong at the MCG, 7.50pm AEDT
NO LATE CHANGES
FINAL INTERCHANGES
Collingwood: Travis Varcoe, Callum Brown, Steele Sidebottom, Tom Langdon
Geelong: Charlie Constable, Sam Menegola, Gryan Miers, Mark O’Connor
I have butters Scott Atkins and constable. Who do I bench and who do I play???
Personally I would bench Atkins as he is more forward pocket providing defensive pressure. The rest are much of a muchness IMO
Thanks shaggi. Currently have Atkins and constable on the bench. Think I’ll leave it as is.
Who to field
TU – Petruccelle
TD – Drew
Comment for M.Parker (STK)
To all the SCT coaches many thanks for you analysis and input throughout the off seasean. Now the season has commenced, good luck to all Coaches for 2019. Got all 4 Cats rookies in this game + Danger. Even so, go Pies…….M.
I was all set to give a thumbs up till the last line. Go Cats!!!
Well said….good luck Moonshine.
Gee, I’m going early here but Grundy looked like he was labouring in the first 10minutes of the game and then hasn’t been sighted since!….
Maybe the toe injury was more significant than we thought? Eh, can trade him to literally anybody after next round anyway lol
He is still injured and completely underdone….I chose to wait as he will get cheap
Might go for Melbourne but welcome back Jamie Elliott one of my favorites.

Are hit outs getting scored lower this year in SuperCoach?
Grundy is killing me
Jeepers skills are down this game so far
Grundy Looks trash out there Would be lucky to get 100 so as danger
Everyone has danger. $700k for a ruck ??
Tell em there dreaming !!

A strange game this one.
Very
I love how hours of planning go pout the window once it really starts. I have no plan for low scoring
Each year can never get the ruck setup right
I know it is a marathon but Jeez, Grundy’s dominance is not translating in points. He is even kicking ok… doesnt look like a 700k player, The 666 rules?
He looks unfit
settle down folks … you get another week to look.
He’s given up free kicks, he’s had two clangers and his DE is only 55% …
+ his mid is up against a pretty darn good mid that would be stealing his hitouts … the scoring will come!! If you started him, you bought him for the year …
sheesh!!
He’s unfit from an interrupted preseason, he’ll come good in a week or two.
Why is the crowd booing Ablett Did I miss something?
Captain since danger flopped…
Macrae T/U
Gawn against English T/D
Comment: Oliver or Fyfe
Game 100 for Maxy, I’ll go with him.
Oliver. Great preseason , sure thing.
Gawns playing Port, not the doggies?
Don’t count out danger yet
Demons not playing Bulldogs concerning Gawn his up against Ryder and Lycett
Loving this, moore’s getting points for being on the field
Under selling him for mine. Took 4-5 contested intercept marks and would’ve taken 5+ kick ins and played on from all of them.
Kick-ins 3rd and 4thQ
700k flop
This does feel like a strange game. Points are spread all over the place.

Treloar – 10 clangers……..what could have been? 😉
Same old…thats why never a top ten mid.
Have champion data changed their algorithm this year? It’s like playing Mario Kart with the ‘catch up’ enabled
Took the c off grundy just before game, dodged a bullet, not, put it on danger ! Oh well!
Had clark and constable on field so can’t complain there.
Clark constable and moore all on field.
Grundy…..come to pappa. I’ll pick you up off the floor under $600k
Bit of an early call chief, this game stays in the rolling 3 round average for 1 week when prices change. Hardly low enough to do that much damage.
went coniglio -> treloar right on the bounce…
34 touches, 5 marks, 6 tackles and a goal and only a 102 return hurts.
DE% hurt an not being able to get back on the ground in the final 5min also.
The Cox Curse strikes again?
Good call on Not going Grundy? Looking forward to seeing your progress. It would take a lot of balls to not start Grundy/Gawn
Luckily, ballsy moves are my speciality. 😉
Damn you, Chris Scott! Not utilizing Dangerfield! You have one the BEST midfielders of the last decade and you WASTE his talent by rotating him in the forwardline all bloody night! And all this AFTER previously saying that Ablett was set for a stint in the forward-line and naming Dangerfield in the center. Argh!
….as you can probably tell I had the C on Danger…but my point still stands!
I understand it hurts, but the cats still won!
Geez, it’s like the world turned flat!
It’s one game out of 198 people. Grundy’s not fit. Danger was always gonna go forward. On the upside, Moore and the rookies were excellent!
KEEP CALM
LOVE SUPERCOACH
🙂
Treloar – yes, he’s in my team…..maybe I’m a little bias……he was everywhere, absolute machine……..he’s not going to commit ten clangers every week.
Grundy – don’t panic JUST yet. Six clangers and 55%DE didn’t help him either. Might have a slow start but he’s not far off.
Beams – Worked into the game quite well
Pendles – his usual self
Elliott – Could do worse, good return
Moore – Played on from most kick-ins, will be handy if he stays injury-free for 7-8 weeks
Dangerfield – playing FWD more often that I’d like
Ablett – classy……will have his big games during the year but not too often.
Dahlhaus – couldn’t fault his first game with the new club. Top10 FWD? Maybe just outside?
Kelly – impressive…….solid F3 selection
Constable – not out of place at senior level. He and Walsh will be reliable M7/M8 options for a month or two
Clark – No reason to drop him on that performance……although will be tight when Tuohy comes back
How cool is Maynards hair? Me son’s both wanna get that cut. I rekcon I might two!
Your magnitude of the English language astonishes me.
I’m not sure what that meen’s but I agree. GO PIE’S!!!
His size of the english language astonishes you? Yep I can see how that would happen.
Just like me wife!
I have Constable on the bench with the Emergency on him. Should I take Butters off the field place him on the bench. Get rid of B. Scott and put a non playing rookie on the field so I get Constables 85.
2nd game of the season don’t muck up your teams balance over 83 points
