Game Chat – Fremantle v Carlton

Written by Father Dougal on June 30 2019

Where and when: Optus Stadium, Sunday June 30, 3.20pm AWST

What it means for Fremantle: A chance to steady the ship and maintain a top-eight spot after losing to Melbourne while adjusting the forward line without talls Jesse Hogan (foot), Rory Lobb (foot) and Matt Taberner (foot).

What it means for Carlton: The Blues have been super competitive in David Teague’s two games in charge, beating the Lions and just falling to the Dogs, and will want to continue on that path when they resume from the bye.

The stat: The Dockers have dominated Carlton since 2013, winning six of the past seven by an average margin of 34 points.

The match-up: Joel Hamling v Charlie Curnow

Hamling has the size, smarts and athleticism to go with Curnow wherever he roams and he will need to be on his game to keep the emerging Blues star in check. Curnow will be brimming with confidence after bagging seven goals before the bye against the Dogs. He’s the ninth-best key forward in the game, according to the Official AFL Player Ratings, while Hamling ranks 15th among tall defenders.

It’s a big week for: Brennan Cox

With no Hogan, Lobb or Taberner it’s likely Cam McCarthy will be brought back in from the cold but Cox will be relied upon as the spearhead. He has booted four goals in seven games this year playing a mixture of forward and back.

Father Dougal’s Tip: Dockers by 30 points.

  1. Go Fyfe you big sexy man beast and that hot to trot man bun!

Carrying my team on his shoulders this week against an army who have gone with Big Maxy… Could be worth a triple double with Maxy on 9 at half time!

    1. Apologies mate. But I’d have taken Grundy too.

At least Fyfe will play late every week. Looking like there are a few cheeky VC options emerging for the remainder. We just need to hit them!

  13. I’ve been saying it for years…Cripps is just holding the Blues back, as evidenced by this game. The sooner he’s offloaded to the Bombers the better ; )

  15. Would love a champion data analysis for Fyfe’s last 45 minutes of this game. Not a single point with plenty of possessions. Not as dominant as his first half but still bs

      1. Hardly. Won the last two clearances when a goal would’ve won it for them. Seems v harsh (from someone who had the C on him), but I guess that’s what happens when you don’t win the game?!?

  16. Are you there macca, tight finish, only in 2 leagues both very close so took a punt on bewley beating clarkes score, cost me 22 points , won the other one by 1 point, down to you by 10 . Nevermind that is the chances we take.

    1. heya Bruce – yeah mate, back here now – went out to Carl Jr’s with the missus to get some dinner … just posted in the chat box to you for the league – hard luck mate, you had me cold at HT with the way Fyfe was playing … but yeah, Bewley had a shocker and Silvani put the brakes on Fyfe – I think scaling to Murphy also took some points away from Fyfe’s final score … bloody bad luck mate – was a good call taking Fyfe … and especially changing your C from Gawn to him!!

  17. If I hadn’t checked the SC scores in some mad frenzy every two minutes and had simply watched the game instead, I’d be happy with 140+.
But to score sub-40 in the second-half is simply not right!?!
Thanks to Salamander’s brilliant Scoring Anomalies Review last week it’ll be a lot easier to analyse. Will make the time to do it tomorrow.

    1. In a similar vein allsaints I reckon bont was marked hard for the rest of the game after a massive first qtr.

    2. there is a significant problem with the scoring system in the way it is adjudicated … they score too hard too early, then keep scaling back and adjusting as the game goes on. …It’s BS.

They should simply have no total points to be allocated for a match and just allocate ‘genuine’ (always fickle in many cases!) for what is genuinely earnt … no total scores for whole match and no scaling rubbish … it would be much more accurate and fair, to all.

  18. On another note i checked scores on gameday and had lost both games then there was an update and i had won one by a point. Swings and roundabouts.
