2018 SCT Brownlow Competition Results

Ben Brown won best vegan suit, Jack Higgins won goal of the year and Barry Mitchell’s son won something too but the biggest award of Brownlow night is yet to be awarded. I’ve spent much of the day formatting Wighty and Thommo’s messy entries, looking up the spuds and duds from each clubs Brownlow results and crunched the numbers to come up with a winner.

Before I get to the results though, a few big comments were made by some of our entrants and I believe in accountability for actions.

Death Adder said “Ruckman historically don’t poll well so Sidey might even Out Poll him.” Whilst he may throw an errant capital into his writing, this man seriously knows his Brownlow and I’m now starting to think that Death Adder is actually Razor Ray.

Death Adder said “Well PieFan64 has just sewn up the Wooden Spoon for the Brownlow Comp. You can Pencil that in RB.” How does Death Adder think I collate this stuff? In pencil, on paper? Well, he didn’t predict a tie for last but we’ll pay this one.

The Salamander said “My personal prediction is that the bookies won’t win our competition here – some people will out-pick them – but that they will finish in the top 20 % or so.” The Brownlow Predictors may be constructed in a way to lure us to punt on certain players so I’ll disregard them for a moment but when the bookies have to play it straight with their wallets, The Salamander was pretty accurate with the TAB finishing pretty high in our rankings.

In the battle of the Brownlow Predictors, Betfair was pretty bang on whilst KingPunters were WAY OFF. Makes sense that the big corporate amalgamation in Betfair does their research well. Shows why they fleece us all when we plonk our hard earned on our ‘hot tips’. Question is, since this is a predictor and not a betting market there’s no need for half votes, so how did Betfair expect Mitchell and Martin to snare half votes?

Betfair Brownlow Predictor

Highest Vote Getter – Mitchell 27.5 votes

2nd Highest Vote Getter – D Martin 22.5 votes

3rd Highest Vote Getter – Cripps 22 votes

KingPunters Brownlow Predictor

Highest Vote Getter – Mitchell 37 votes

2nd Highest Vote Getter – Gaff 28 votes

3rd Highest Vote Getter – Beams 25 votes

Noone had Sidebottom or Brayshaw in their top 3 placegetters showing how unexpected their scoring was. In fact many entries didn’t feature Brayshaw in Melbourne’s top 3. There were a lot of doughnuts, too many to name and shame but I did like Thommo nominating Whitford to be 3rd for GWS. Don’t worry, I assumed you meant Whitfield?

In the end the result came down to a four point spread across the first four placegetters with Lisa’s Amazons pipping our resident guru Death Adder by a solitary point. I had a quick look at their respective teams and one difference that stood out was the Curnow’s. Lisa chose Ed and Death Adder chose Charlie. Swap them around and we have a different winner! Congrats to Lisa on the win and getting her name into the SCT Hall of Fame (again!)!! Death Adder, your status around these parts as a Brownlow master is upheld and a shout out to Catta for a 5th place finish to keep up his end of the bargain.

  1. Congratulations Lisa!

Lisa you have had a year like Dusty last year with you taking out all of the awards on the site. Fantastic Stuff! A very well deserved win.

RB well done on the huge effort again running the Competition.

    P. S. I came close to whacking Sidey as Top 3 as I wanted to cheer a Pie home , but went with the consensus and pack.

  2. Thanks to Schwarz for the additional formatting, looks good mate.

Congrats to Lisa on toppling the Brownlow king.

One more set of results to come with the Crystal Ball to come. I’ll give you a teaser. It’ll come out BEFORE the Grand Final, that’s how bad our predictions were!!!!

  3. Great concept RB , cheers for all of the work you put in. Encapulates my SC season , not a bad placing but a little bit off the pace. Well done to Lisa on the win.

  4. Who’s Whitfield?

Congratulations Lisa! Commiserations TDA on losing yet again.

Thanks for running the Brownlow comp again RB. Sorry about the dodgy formatting!

  5. Yeah I making a habit of finding ways to get beat. However, with myself being right up there it guaranteed a good finish for yourself Thommo after you must have pretty much copy and pasted my predictions and then thrown in Whitford to distract from the matter as a bit of a Redherring.

    1. I also threw in Pendleury to really confuse the punters!

To be fair, I selected Sidebottom in my Carji club entry weeks ago although you’ll have to take my word for it!

  6. Wow – your kidding, right? Thanks guys, was certainly NOT expecting that. First time entering the Brownlow comp. I watched the coverage and was cursing myself for selecting Gawn & Grundy in my Top 3 – will learn for next year, Ruckman don’t win. And I did very nearly put Sidey into 3rd overall instead of Grundy, but was concerned with Pendles taking too many votes off him.

Funny that you point out the difference between 1st & 2nd as the Curnow brothers. On paper, I had written my 3rd Carlton choice as Charlie but when I came to type in my entry, I decided on Ed as I thought his midfield position would score better with the umps than Charlie’s forward one.

Thanks again for another great competition on the best Supercoach site going around. I certainly will miss my footy fix over the coming months, but in the meantime, I have a huge game to follow this weekend – GO PIES!!!!

  7. Congrats, Lisa ….. super season!

Thank you once again Roo Bloke, 3 votes to you too!

Well done on the new concept, although I only knew of it when I jumped on to enter the day of the Brownlow I think I still considered it to be a fantastic challenge & a worthy change to the competition.

Good luck to those that follow the Pies & Eagles on the SCT site & everyone have an outstanding but safe Grand Final week-end

    Cheers Catta
