Captaincy Candidates – Round 7

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

GAWN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 174, 98, 123
  • L3 @ MCG: 138, 113, 162

A refreshed Maxxy against Toby ‘Free Kick Against’ Nankervis at the G is a daunting prospect. For those who love early action, he’s your man. A lock for 120.

PETRACCA v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 141, 104, 87
  • L3 @ MCG: 59, 146, 119

Similarly, Racca against one of the best VC/C midfields in the Tigers just has to go. Solid for 140 really.

BUTTERS v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 96, 89, 39
  • L3 @ AO: 130, 119, 98

Not the best record against the Saints and could have Windhager hang off him but the Saints are pretty brittle at the moment, so could see Butters cracking them open for 125.

DAWSON v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 102, 145, 134
  • L3 @ BA: 134, 117

22 kicks, 734 MG, 2 goals and a bunch of intercept play marked the return of the Dawson we know last week. Even if it’s not permanent that form will be enough to carry him through to a 130+ against North. Also don’t mind Sheezel on a small deck with North getting railed.

Captaincy Candidates

WALSH v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 126, 158, 75
  • L3 @ MCG: 99, 109, 93

The Cats are of course the competition leaders at the moment but remain a little scant on ball. Quite like Walsh here in a high stakes occasion for a large one. 120 at a minimum.

BONTEMPELLI v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 114, 182, 100
  • L3 @ OS: 182, 96, 156

Freo are actually a poorly ranked center bounce and contested possession outfit at the moment despite excellent personnel – there’s the first tick for Bont. Second, his match up stats and, finally, the anticipated high stakes, high scaling match conditions. Liking him for 130 even though he hasn’t quite popped off yet. Serong can also come along for the ride.

ROWELL v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 165, 101, 157
  • L3 @ PFS: 135, 155, 137

Some of the best match up stats I’ve typed up this season, which could easily be replicated with word Reid might be rested. Been a tremendous two weeks, so think we rest Reid, tell Yeo to chill, get everyone’s management right and let the Suns have their way with us on the road. Rowell to cruise to 140.

HEENEY v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 77, 81, 42
  • L3 @ MCG: 148, 136, 98

Dropped his first sub 120 score last week, a 98, on account of 53% DE, 7 clangers, 2 FAs and a little less action. Will have no problems clicking back into gear against the Hawks. Solid for 130.

Steer Clear

GREEN v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 49, 77, 60
  • L3 @ MO: 72, 135, 58

Second week my man gets the Steer Clear. He’ll ton but got all the named options well ahead of him this week.

Smoky Pick

MERRETT v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 133, 133, 123
  • L3 @ MCG: 127, 133, 168

Just very, very consistent and reinvented his profile to that of a contested, offense and team oriented midfielder. Solid for 130 even if the ceiling isn’t there against the rabid Pies.

  • L3 v Pies: 133, 133, 123
  • L3 @ MCG: 127, 133, 168

DAICOS v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 145, 79, 71
  • L3 @ MCG: 133, 54, 135

Delivered as my C last week, shook a tag and was contest and clearance leader for the day. A real hard nose performance from him. The Anzac Day occasion will offer a fierce contest and consequential scaling to boot, so also like a cheeky look on Daicos for 130. Suspect Caldwell goes for him, so VC only.

History

  • Round 1: Green 152
  • Round 2: Green 137
  • Round 3: Gulden 73
  • Round 4: Butters 119
  • Round 5: Rowell 135
  • Round 6: Daicos 133

Verdict

With no Dees or Dawson, I’m going for Bont VC. The Eagles recent center clearance prowess and competitiveness is the only thing giving me pause to perhaps go Heeney but as mentioned I think we’ll take a breather. Bont into Rowell with much love for all the other options. Good week.

  1. I assume most are doing tonight is chucking the VC on Gawn, like myself.

Tough choice on the C if it fails as there are a lot of solid options. Looking at probably Bont or Heeney for C

      1. Richmond are going with 2 ruckmen against Gawn, will this be a tactic to wear Gawn down with big bodies

  2. I like Houston. Get the impression StKilda give up a lot of points to defenders. Not confident enough to make him C, so have to choose between him and Daicos for VC ( no Gawn). Probably Bont with the C. But I would love a VC choice to land.

  3. Rank 1.1K overall

IDK if this is me trying to be different but with the way other MIDs have gone against RICH (175 Butters, 157 Yeo, 148 Heeney, 142 Steele, 137 Rowell, 135 Cripps), I’m going Tracca VC over Gawn 0_0

(context: 2/3 of the Top 1% have Gawn VC, only 1% of the Top 1% have Tracca VC)

Still believe that Gawn will go well and score 130+ against Nank as he always does, but the amount of charity from RICH’s mids to opponents this year has swayed me to Tracca.
