Reserves Rookie Review – Round 6

Written by Alza on April 28 2021

Hi all and welcome to the first edition of my Reserves Rookie Review. We are limited to what stats are available in each reserves league but I have tried to include everything I can find. As SuperCoach points aren’t listed I have used Fantasy points instead (FA). Please feel free to provide any feedback as I will try to keep this as relevant for everyone as possible.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Central Districts 12.8.80 def. by Adelaide 16.7.103

Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (10 kicks), 7 marks (3 contested), 4 tackles and 38 hitouts – 108 FA
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 21 disposals (15 kicks) and 7 marks – 80 FA
Tariek Newchurch $102.4K MID/FWD – 8 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 2.0 and took 2 marks – 43 FA
Nicholas Murray $102.4k DEF – 14 disposals (6 kicks) and had 5 marks – 47 FA
James Borlase $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (13 kicks) and 11 marks – 75 FA

Strachan has been performing well in the reserves but is well behind in the pecking order. The 3 defenders all performed well with Murray and Worrell the most likely to be selected

PORT ADELAIDE
Glenelg 12.11.83 def. Port Adelaide 10.13.73

Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 8 disposals (5 kicks), kicked 1.0, 41 hitouts and 4 clearances – 79 FA
Taj Schofield $102.4k MID – 21 disposals (13 kicks), kicked 1.0, 8 tackles and 4 clearances – 89 FA

Not many relevant rookies for Port at this stage but Schofield is one to keep an eye on

VFL

BRISBANE
Carlton 24.10.154 def. Brisbane 13.7.85

Tom Fullarton $164.8k RUC/FWD – 34 disposals (19 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks, 6 inside 50s, 18 hitouts and 6 frees for (1 against) – 131 FA
Connor Ballenden $146.1k FWD – 21 disposals (17 kicks), 14 marks and 9 rebound 50s – 100 FA
Nakia Cockatoo $123.9k MID/FWD – 13 disposals (11 kicks) and 5 marks – 54 FA
Harry Sharp $117.3k DEF/MID – 17 disposals (10 kicks), 4 marks and 4 inside 50s – 61 FA
Carter Michael $102.4k MID – 18 disposals (12 kicks), 3 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 66 FA

Great game by Fullarton as he tries to regain his spot, Sharp was decent and is an outside chance to come back. Ballenden has started the VFL season really strong with 29 marks in 2 games but has a poor scoring history in his short AFL career but it appears he has a new role down back

CARLTON
Carlton 24.10.154 def. Brisbane 13.7.85

Paddy Dow $210.5k FWD/MID – 20 disposals (10 kicks), 6 tackles and 5 inside 50s – 77 FA
Lochie O’Brien $180.5k MID – 20 disposals (17 kicks), 11 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 88 FA
Josh Honey $123.9k MID/FWD – 16 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.2 and 5 marks – 82 FA
Corey Durdin $117.3k MID/FWD – 8 disposals (all kicks), kicked 1.0 and had 4 marks – 47 FA

Dow and O‘Brien trying to work their way in but will need a body of work to make it happen

COLLINGWOOD
Collingwood 6.14.50 def. by Essendon 12.13.85

Oliver Henry $135.3k FWD – 9 disposals (6 kicks), kicked 2.0 and had 3 marks – 48 FA
Max Lynch 123.9k RUC/FWD – 12 disposals (6 kicks), 4 marks and 25 hitouts – 75 FA
Caleb Poulter $117.3k MID/FWD – 27 disposals (18 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and 7 inside 50s – 93 FA
Reef McInnes $117.3k MID – 17 disposals (8 kicks), 4 tackles and 4 inside 50s – 59 FA
Jack Ginnivan $102.4k MID/FWD – 12 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 1.0, 4 marks and 7 tackles – 81 FA

Strong showing from both Poulter and Ginnivan but they appear to be down in the pecking order with Lynch in the same boat as likely 4th in line for the ruck role. Henry could come in if Bucks decides to ‘play the kids’

ESSENDON
Collingwood 6.14.50 def. by Essendon 12.13.85

Ned Cahill $161.2k FWD – 21 disposals (14 kicks), 5 marks, 6 tackles and 6 rebound 50s – 97 FA
Alec Waterman $148.4k FWD – 17 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 2.4 and had 5 tackles – 87 FA
Tom Hird $123.9k MID – 16 disposals (9 kicks) and 6 marks – 64 FA
Nick Bryan $123.9k RUC – 13 disposals (10 kicks), 6 inside 50s and 30 hitouts – 79 FA

Good showings from Cahill and Waterman as they push their cases for a recall. Bryan was solid but with Essendon looking for bigger experienced ruckman he will need some injuries to get a look in

UWS GIANTS (GWS)
UWS Giants 10.3.63 def. by Footscray 21.9.135

Nick Shipley $123.9k MID – 19 disposals (8 kicks), 8 tackles and 6 inside 50s – 79 FA
Zach Sproule $123.9k FWD – 17 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 1.1, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 5 inside 50s – 85 FA
Kieren Briggs $123.9k DEF/FWD – 15 disposals (9 kicks), 1 goal, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 4 rebound 50s and 31 hitouts – 110 FA
Jacob Wehr $117.3k DEF – 17 disposals (15 kicks), 3 marks, 3 tackles and 8 rebound 50s – 70 FA

Good all round games from Shipley and Sproule in a losing cause with Briggs a stand out performance which could see him debut soon. Wehr saw plenty of it down back but it seems he needs some injuries to get into the Giants back 6

GEELONG
Geelong 22.17.149 def. AFL Academy 2.7.19

Max Holmes $121.8k MID/FWD – kicked 3 goals

Limited details from this game as it was only a practice game, Holmes kicked 3 goals and was named among the best with De Koning picking up a potential injury

GOLD COAST
Gold Coast 14.11.95 def. Sydney 12.9.81

Jeremy Sharp $141.8k MID – 21 disposals (14 kicks) kicked 1.2, 7 marks and 5 inside 50s – 98 FA
Alex Davies $102.4k MID – 21 disposals (11 kicks) and 3 tackles – 74 FA
Hawego Paul Oea $102.4k MID/FWD – 24 disposals (15 kicks), 6 marks, 4 tackles and 6 inside 50s – 96 FA

Great games from the above players but Sharp would be the most likely inclusion in the future. A popular loophole in A. Fyfe has also had a couple of decent games, he might not play soon but keep an eye out if the Suns have more injuries

BOX HILL HAWKS (HAWTHORN)
Box Hill 17.10.112 def. Northern Blues 8.8.56

Tyler Brockman $172.7k MID/FWD – 2 disposals (1 kick) – 1 FA
Emerson Jeka $123.9k FWD – 20 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 5.2, 9 marks and 4 inside 50s 111 FA
Ned Reeves $123.9k RUC – 16 disposals (9 kicks), 1 goal, 3 tackles, 5 inside 50s and 54 hitouts – 111 FA
Jack Saunders $102.4k MID/FWD – 9 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 1.1 and laid 3 tackles – 48 FA
Lachlan Bramble $102.4k MID – 17 disposals (13 kicks) and laid 3 tackles – 66 FA

Jeka has now kicked 8 goals in 2 games and is knocking on the door, Reeves dominated the ruck but would be down the pecking order. Bramble was popular in pre-season and was best on ground but pulled his hammy before half time while Brockman had only 2 touches but doesn’t appear to be due to injury

CASEY DEMONS (MELBOURNE)
Richmond 5.7.37 def. by Casey 13.18.96

Neville Jetta $198.6k DEF – 23 disposals (16 kicks), 6 marks and 4 rebound 50s – 80 FA
Toby Bedford $137k FWD – 19 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 0.3, 5 marks, 7 tackles and 6 inside 50s – 94 FA
Jake Bowey $117.3k MID/FWD – 26 disposals (14 kicks), 5 marks and 6 rebound 50s – 81 FA

Jetta was solid down back but is not SuperCoach relevant. Bedford could’ve had a really big day if he kicked straight but with Melbourne winning and Brown to come in changes seem unlikely at this stage

NORTH MELBOURNE
North Melbourne 5.9.39 def. by Frankston 16.8.104

Phoenix Spicer $117.3k MID/FWD – 3 disposals (1 kick) and 1 mark – 11 FA

Not many relevant rookies for North with Spicer doing a hamstring on the weekend and Lazzaro injured currently

RICHMOND
Richmond 5.7.37 def. by Casey 13.18.96

Patrick Naish $180.5k MID – 28 disposals (24 kicks), 5 marks and 13 rebound 50s – 95 FA
Callum Coleman-Jones $161.2k RUC/FWD – 18 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 1.0, 9 marks, 4 inside 50s and 29 hitouts – 120 FA
Will Martyn $123.9k MID – 16 disposals (6 kicks), 5 tackles and 4 rebound 50s – 62 FA
Hugo Ralphsmith $123.9k MID/FWD – 4 disposals (3 kicks) and kicked 0.2 – 16 FA
Riley Collier-Dawkins $123/9k MID – 13 disposals (5 kicks), 4 tackles and 5 inside 50s – 48 FA
Maurice Rioli $117.3k MID/FWD – 8 disposals (5 kicks) and laid 5 tackles – 39 FA

Great games from Naish and Coleman-Jones as they push for their first games of the year. Martyn was solid as was Collier-Dawkins who has been named to debut this weekend. Not so good from Ralphsmith this week after being flagged early this season

SANDRINGHAM (ST. KILDA)
Port Melbourne 13.14.92 def. Sandringham 9.12.66

Paul Hunter $134.3k RUC – 13 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 2.0, 5 tackles and 26 hitouts – 95 FA
Ryan Byrnes $123.9k MID – 25 disposals (14 kicks), 5 marks, 3 tackles and 5 inside 50s – 91 FA

Hunter was good in the ruck but expect Ryder to be back in this week while Byrnes is one to keep an eye on after a strong start to the year. Highmore was emergency for the AFL side

SYDNEY
Gold Coast 14.11.95 def. Sydney 12.9.81

Logan McDonald $251.3k FWD – 5 disposals (2 kicks) and kicked 1 goal – 22 FA
Matthew Ling $163k DEF – 12 disposals (8 kicks) and took 5 marks – 45 FA
Will Gould $123.9k DEF – 17 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 1.1, 4 marks, 5 tackles and 6 rebound 50s – 90 FA

The one everyone has been waiting for in Gould had a good day down back highlighted by 15 kicks and a goal and might not be too far away with the other Sydney rookies seeming to need a rest. McDonald didn’t really push his case for a recall

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS (WESTERN BULLDOGS)
UWS Giants 10.3.63 def. by Footscray 21.9.135

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan $207.3k FWD – 9 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 5.2 and had 3 marks – 76 FA
Lewis Young $198.3k DEF – 19 disposals (13 kicks), and had 8 marks – 72 FA
Louis Butler $191.8k DEF – 20 disposals (11 kicks), kicked 2.1, 6 marks and 4 inside 50s – 94 FA
Jordon Sweet $123.9k RUC – 13 disposals (8 kicks), kicked 2.1, 6 marks, 4 tackles and 37 hitouts – 118 FA

Ugle-Hagan kicked 5 in a dominate display from Footscray and is in line to play this week with Sweet and Schache also a chance. Young and Butler were very good with Young looking to get back into the side

WAFL

There were no WAFL games this week due to COVID lockdown

  1. Wow, Alza! Tremendous write up!

    Insanely helpful to read.

Hoping Waterman comes back in, but not really sure who comes out. Would also be great to see Gould and Wehr at AFL level at some stage.

Again, brilliant write up. Level of detail and coverage is superb.

Great to have you on board!

    1. Great write up Alza!

Looking forward to your Reserve rookie review updates for the rest of the season.

Brockman definitely not getting a gig this week after only 2 disposals.

      1. Thanks very much GD and TDA, appreciate it. Waterman is probably next in line if someone like H. Jones gets dropped

  2. Alright I have got an update from a couple of sources on Brockman.

“Brockman got a rolled ankle and tried to play on with minimal success.”

“Brockman had a minor injury early in the game that hindered his ability to play out the remainder of the game. He did a couple of nice things early on.”

  3. Very informative. Thanks for this post.

What has happened to Connor Downie? Has his form dropped off to the point that he’s not standing out at VFL level?

      1. Maginness was the sub over the weekend, Alza. Ended up coming on for Burgoyne.

        No idea where Downie’s at.

        1. Not sure but he was an emergency so maybe an unused travelling emergency that’s why he didn’t get a gig in the VFL?

    1. Definitely a chance but I reckon Goody said they’d only bring 1 of him and Brown in and seeing as Brown is a recruit I would say he gets first crack. Hard to change a winning side though
