Captaincy Candidates – Round 10

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on May 20 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

WALSH v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 52, 79 (66 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 111, 130, 144 (128 av.)

If the Roos MIDs feasted on the Hawks last week (Simpkin 164, Cunnington 134), Walsh should have a field day for 125. Posted his best scores this year at the MCG and the Blues will be angling for a definitive win.

GAWN v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 107, 158, 114 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 107, 130, 140 (126 av.)

Despite the 44 HOs and clear ruck dominance last week, 6 clangers, 66% DE and less marks and touches than usual clipped Maxxy at 117. Nic Nat pounded ROB last week, expect Gawn to do the same for 130. Proven ceiling at AO.

SATAN v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 205, 122, 98 (142 av.)
  • L3 @ AO: 137, 205, 101 (148 av.)

Speaking of ceilings, who could forget the Satanic One’s double ton last year? Chugging along nicely as the #5 MID this season and 5/9 scores have all been captaincy worth. A lock for 120 this week.

Captaincy Candidates

MACRAE v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 93, 120, 121 (111 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 106, 146, 108 (120 av.)

Thinking Bont will get some attention given the match-winning nick he’s been in, Ross has been utilize for defensive jobs in the past. That should free Macrae up to bounce back with a 130.

FYFE v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 86, 101, 115 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 100, 125, 133 (119 av.)

Kicked himself out of a monster last week with 46% DE and 6 clangers, but otherwise great CB and CP numbers of late. Will be a hot contest with the Swans, Fyfe a lock for 125.

GRUNDY v Port

  • L3 v Port: 122, 108, 162 (131 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 144, 153, 92 (130 av.)

Even though Port are a much better side, expecting the whole prison bars dilemma to fire up the Pies on Sunday. Grundy to slap Ladhams around for 120 minimum, with a shot to go large at the G.

Steer Clear

MERRETT v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 68, 137, 109 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 64, 115, 105 (95 av.)

Regrettably have to give Zerrett the Steer Clear this week. Serong took him out last week and Turner will be deployed this time around to restrict him to another sub-ton.

Smoky Pick

ZORKO v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 74, 141, 82 (99 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 105, 92, 101 (99 av.)

Really relishing the increased CB load with Neale out and all over the place last week with 34 touches, 12 contested and 23 kicks. Tigers midfield letting some big scores off, Zorko solid for a ton and a reasonable shot to go 130+.

Verdict

Satan into Macrae for me this week. Grundy a failsafe if needed.

  1. Love the Walsh idea and was considering him before this article. I think it’ll be the first time I put the VC on him and Gawn with the C.

    1. Could be one of those games where he fires up, Rog. If you want/need an early VC, here are his stats:

      MARTIN v Lions

      L3 v Lions: 111, 108, 141 (120 av.)
      L3 @ G: 92, 66, 54 (71 av.)

  2. Wont be able to loop anyone decent (Short, Zorko) due to early Suns/Brisbane games if Highmore/Flynn gets dropped (I hope they wont) i will have more options.

At this stage Zorko into Macrae.

  3. Gawn into Grundy, boring but effective! Really considering Oliver but small risk of copping attention

    1. Yeah, outside chance they use Keays or Berry in a tagging role but that’d be the first time this year the Crows have deployed a full game tagger.

Worth a look given his record.

  4. Thoughts on Lyons as VC? Richmond has given up some huge midfield scores this season.

You mentioned Zorko as a smoky pick, can Lyons have the same potential?

    1. Hey, AA.

Yep, definitely. Named Zorko as the Smoky Pick because he’s at higher ownership, but absolutely give Lyons a look if you have him – he was last week’s smoky.

Lyons their #1 user, Tigers midfield bleeding points, big game playing at home.

      Here are his stats:

      LYONS v Tigers

      L3 v Tigers: 121, 92, 88 (100 av.)
      L3 @ G: 145, 122, 128 (132 av.)

      1. I’m chucking my VC on Lyons. Much easier to organise loops with a Friday night game. Should be a great game

  5. If you have either of them then McCluggage (3 round average of 124) or Lyons (3RA of 135) vs Tigers on Fri night should be a sneaky good POD VC choice IMO.

Cam Guthrie (3RA of 128) against the Suns in Geelong would be another decent VC choice if you’re lucky enough to have him. Plays the early Sat afternoon game.

    1. Yep, jotted Guthrie down when I was drafting but couldn’t squeeze him in.

      Here are his stats:

      GUTHRIE v Suns

      L3 v Suns: 73, 94, 81 (83 av.)
      L3 @ GMHBA: 144, 75, 124 (114 av.)

  6. Nice GD and good calls by the community on the other options of players like Lyons.

I am tossing up options of trade ins this week and Lyons, Guthrie and Duncan are on my target list … Lyons may just win on the basis of lack of loophole options (unless Flynn is yet again omitted – which really don’t want!!)

My so called safety NPR’s for loops are all playing before Gawn … so that shoots that idea down!!

This is something for everyone to be conscious of this week … make sure you check for your loop option being available late!!

  7. Thanks GD

Very interesting week, there’s a heap of options without too may standouts. I would of almost been forced to go Dusty VC tonight as Flynn is named and my other loops play early Sat arvo. ( Highmore and Jones on bench may play or be subs 🙁 )
Brayshaw going down has at least provided another option.

I’m backing Walsh over Max as V/C

I’m just not sure I can trust big Max atm with Jackson back.
    ( now watch him go 150+ )

The way the Hawks Mids leaked points last week, I feel you are right and Walsh is a shoe in for 125+
Cripps may even ton up 😉

Grundy C is my back up. He should take care of the Potato Ladhams.

Thanks again for a great Captains write up.

    Best of luck this week.

    1. yep Freo – you are spot on there with Jackson adversely affecting Gawns scores – he takes more bounces and takes Gawn’s role more and Gawn unfortunately is moved to the forwards and gets more of a “rest” and less of him dropping back behind the ball and taking intercepts etc.

That said, Gawn has been getting scored very harshly by CD all year and not getting many favourable calls on his hit outs to advantage – despite dominating hit out counts against his opponents. Watching live matches with him, he gets the rough end of the calls thus far.

For me, with all of those factors occurring, and sadly, I think he is really only a safe VC option this year, not a C option … unless things change. Just my thoughts

      Cheers …

      1. I agree Macca.

I have been watching closely also, It hard not too when he’s your Captain.
I think CD (lately) tend to only reward taps to advantage when the “next” possie is affective.
        So for eg..
Gawn taps straight to Oliver he handballs but it is knocked away or smothered. Turnover, no team advantage. No tap to advantage, even though Gawn taps it straight to him.

Maybe they are worried about the huge numbers Rucks have been scoring in recent seasons.

Either way . It seems Rucks will be needing their teammates to dispose of the ball correctly,if the want a tap to advantage stat.

Something to monitor more going forward for sure.

        1. yep – you could be right on the money there FT.

I’ll try and watch that closely on Gawn this weekend and see if that seems likely, if I’m home / free at the time.

If the two big rucks are being scored harder this year, it certainly makes the captain / VC choices a lot harder … which makes it more interesting for everyone I guess … would be nice to know that though early on before starting him at the massive premium price …

    1. Hasn’t been in damaging form lately and his low CP ratio and poor clearance work keep holding him back (3/28 CP and 2 clearances last week), but if you don’t have an early VC option and need one then take a flyer on him, sure.

      MITCHELL v Blues

      L3 v Blues: 164, 192, 161 (172 av.)
      L3 @ MCG: 147, 76, 89 (104 av.)
