Captaincy Candidates – Round 16

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 1 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 124, 79, 49 (84 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 96, 122, 80 (99 av.)

Averaging 30+ touches, 118 SC and gives it everything each week. Tigers leak midfield points, so 130 for Miller tonight no problems.

LYONS v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 116, 94, 101 (104 av.)
  • *venue undecided, will update

Wow, what a pick he’s been. Props to owners, he’ll reward you with 140 this week. Zorko showed he can still score tremendously well even with Neale back, so he’s also a great VC this week. On Neale, briefly, the Crows experimentation with a tag last week and his shoulder sting make him a pass.

GAWN v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 163, 150, 149 (154 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 103, 117, 112 (111 av.)

Put up 150 earlier this year even with a 2:1 split Jackson. Would prefer to have him 1v1 on Flynn rather than Mumford, but there’s 20+ points in free kicks and use. Solid for 130 this week.

Captaincy Candidates

STEELE v Pies

  • L3 v Steele: 73, 95, 83 (84 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 132, 73, 101 (102 av.)

Ass record against the Pies but they’re a ways off their form in previous match ups. Saints on high, Steele to carry again, 130. Lock it in, Eddie.

BONTEMPELLI v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 82, 55, 118 (85 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 125, 159, 155 (146 av.)

North have been tagging opposition HBs recently, not MIDs, but Bont could get a look this week. Even so, his form and a 2nd v 18th battle at Marvel means he won’t dip below 125.

MACRAE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: , 108, 90, 105 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 145, 149, 106 (133 av.)

Even on a CB load of only 15 behind Bont, Libba and Smith, Macrae was monumental last week with 32 touches, 14 contested, 7 clearances and a cheeky goal. Could absolutely be a game where he explodes, 140 on the cards.

Steer Clear

SATAN v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 67, 87, 53 (69 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 105, 140, 125 (123 av.)

Cops De Boer this week, not much to discuss. Best case scenario he fights through it for a low-ton.

Smoky Pick

MILLS v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 119, 94, 90 (101 av.)
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 65, 95, 64 (75 av.)

An option this week particularly because of who he’s playing and where: a struggling, underdone Eagles side in Geelong, where we suck. Swans also do our head in, expecting him to go large. Feeling 140~.

Verdict

Same as last week: Miller into Bont for me.

    1. Hmm, goes well at the G but there’s the risk of Serong going to him. Better options out there this week imo.

      Here are his stats though:

      WALSH v Freo

      L3 v Freo: 123, 80 (102 av.)
      L3 @ MCG: 116, 111, 130 (119 av.)

  1. Similar to Nateo above will decide between Zork and Gawn VC on the day depending on my Saturday night plans.
This is because there will be a short window between the Bris game and the Hawks game which I would need to use my loophole in that game. Going for Gawn may help timewise with making a call on the VC score.
Bont deserves to maintain the C after his recent performance.
    125 pass mark on VC

      1. On the back of that, a question for you GD:

        T/U Miller to Lyons
        T/D:Miller to Bont

A good problem to have for sure!

    1. Guthrie hasn’t looked the same post AC joint injury and, no, Dons haven’t been giving up large MID scores – their on ball brigade is very strong rn.

      1. Following up on the Geelong v Essendon game, what are Danger’s stats against the bombers? His been in the news all week with regard to his performances since his come back. Wouldn’t put it past him to have a massive game and put all the talk to bed (well until the finals).

        1. DANGERFIELD v Dons

          L3 v Dons: 139, 26, 114 (93 av.)
          L3 @ GMHBA: 95, 75, 104 (91 av.)

        2. Also looking at Danger as a sneaky VC. My team is not as good as many others, so it forces me to look a little wider at a VC choice. So far, hasn’t worked, but really the only strategy available for a weaker team.

    1. STEWART v Dons:

      L3 v Dons: 123, 102, 57 (94 av.)
      L3 @ GMHBA: 120, 87, 109 (105 av.)

    1. With North being the last game, he’s a C option only. If you are at the last game and still need a C, I would probably lean towards Bont or Macrae ahead of him, but if you need something different for a league win, then he’s worth a try. Has been damn good all year.

      1. Yeah, would definitely be C-ing Bont/Macrae ahead of Ziebell but he should go alright. Will see plenty of it like in R3; 33 touches & 155 SC.

        ZIEBELL v Dogs

        L3 v Dogs: 155, 50, 79 (95 av.)
        L3 @ MRVL: 104, 95, 111 (103 av.)

  2. GD, have you got any stats on the scores by Mids in teams that win with a margin of 60+ pts? I remember Bont and Macrae being very quiet when they played North earlier this season, mostly because the game was pretty much done by half time.

    1. I don’t. Sorry, Joe.

I can look into it for next week though.

Generally speaking, there isn’t a simple correlation for big MID scores in a pumping (eg. Bont’s gone 149, 143 and 156 in the last three weeks in a 28 point win, a 5 point loss and a 55 point win respectively) but, yeah, weak opponents like North and Crows let off large scores and are thus always safe to VC/C against.

Teams like the Tigers, who don’t pay opp. MIDs any mind, or the Eagles, who have very poor CP numbers, are also great to VC/C against.

That said, hotly contested and tight games also tend to produce some large scores with lots of scaling available late for clutch acts.

Wouldn’t read too much into Macrae/Bont quiet v Roos last time. They chilled after HT, with Libba, Smith and Dunkley keeping their foot on the gas.

  3. Would be all over Lyons if I had him for VC. I think if anyone gets attention with Neale out, it’s Zorko.

If Mummy is out Gawn -> Macrae.

If he’s in, don’t mind Dusty as a left field option

  5. Gotta go Lyons into Bont for me as well!

Does Martin go Berserk as Richmond are getting desperate??

    1. Will the roof be closed?

Last week due to covid protocols it had to remain open regardless of weather.

With the changing dynamics this will need to be clarified?

  6. Changing plans with the news of de Boer being dropped. What’s the best option?

    T/U: Lyons into Bont
    T/D: Oliver into Lyons
    Comment: Oliver into Bont

      1. Yeah thought so. Do you have zorkos on hand. Can’t decide who to vc. Missed on Miller unfortunately. Cheers

    1. Last 3 for Grundy v Saints: 103 / 144 / 109 (avg 118)

      Last 3 @MCG (excluding injury effected Geelong game): 138 / 144 / 153 (avg: 145)

    2. Sorry, Lisa.

Just saw this. Thanks for grabbing that, Abs.

Looks be in great shape, just not a fan of any ruck v Ryder and RoMo.

  7. Have 200k in bank seriously considering Patrick Cripps to Walsh. Only 100k more and averaging nearly 30 pts more. 6 trades left so acknowledge it is a luxury trade.

TU do it, 30 pts extra per game to good to ignore
TD don’t, Cripps will come good

  8. Team it is full promo except for 3 forwards l need , will aim for danger, Toby green and probably keep Robertson as F 6. Alternatively I could replace Cripps for laird and bring Whitfield in. Would this be better

    TU Whitfield
