Captaincy Candidates – Round 19

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 22 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

WINES v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 100, 92, 74 (87 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 154, 109, 81 (115 av.)

Finds a ton of it each week, just depends on his DE that day. Pies leaking some large MID scores, Wines a lock for 140. Enjoy, Wighty!

WALSH v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 140, 89, 58 (96 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 131, 89, 130 (117 av.)

39 touches, 15 contested, 23 kicks, a goal and a near double ton last week – the kid is just a jet, remind me to start him next year. Roos still bleeding a lot of inside ball, so a comfortable 130+ on Saturday. Shout out to big dog Motts who, free of bias I’m sure, straight C’d Walsh last week!

STEELE v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 150, 122, 78 (117 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 85, 72, 71 (76 av.)

Just an absolute god and, unless there’s an obvious tag incoming, has to be in your VC/C calculations if you own him. With the Eagles getting pounded at contests (fml) and Saints’ season on a knife’s edge, Steele 140 at a minimum.

Captaincy Candidates

MACRAE v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 145, 141, 120 (135 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 107, 118, 110 (112 av.)

Would prefer to be playing at Marvel not the G, but still got a really strong record v the Dees and just powering through as M1. Pencil him in for 125.

BONTEMPELLI v Dees

  • L3 v Dees: 125, 135, 98 (119 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 107, 92, 127 (102 av.)

While he did butcher it last week with 15 clangers and 55% DE, he still had 36 touches and 18 contested. As long as Harmes or Viney don’t go to him, Bont should correct last week’s poor use and turn up with a 130.

SATAN v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 139, 100, 75 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 139, 87, 105 (110 av.)

Crucial game for the Dees, so back Satan in to fire up. Dogs not impervious to large MID scores and his reliable DE and accumulating should see him go 120 at a minimum, more if he clutches.

Steer Clear

DARCY v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 112, 81, 88 (94 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 101, 86, 49 (79 av.)

As deadly as he’s been over the last month, he’s coming off a fresh knee issue and Hickey is the most restrictive opp. ruck going around. Low-ton at best. Sorry, Abs!

Smoky Pick

DANGERFIELD v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 66, 149, 102 (106 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 97, 140, 106 (114 av.)

No Dusty, Tigers bleed MID points, Danger building in form and loves the big stage – albeit a crowdless one. 150 if the stars align.

Verdict

Tricky one for me, as I don’t have some of this week’s prime candidates in Walsh, Steele and Dangerfield. A touch worried about Harmes or Viney going to Bont, who has served me dutifully since R1, so thinking a combination of Macrae into someone I didn’t name like Zerrett or maybe Miller.

  1. Thanks GD,

    Love your work.

Would there be enough time between games to go Walsh into Steele..?

    1. Thanks, Wayne.

Yeah, just as the Roos Blues game ends Eagles Saints will be starting.

By 3QT you should be able to tell whether Walsh is on for a VC worthy score.

      1. If last week is anything to go by, you’d probably not take Walsh’s score at 3qtr time, and then he’ll pump out almost 100 points in the last quarter

  2. Steele into Danger for me.

Similiar to Wayno above, I’ll have to be ready as my loop will be Downie who plays at 7.40pm. Cheers GD

  3. Feel like Danger spends too much time forward while Jezza is out, think alot has to go right to get him 130 plus right now, Walsh into Steele feels the obvious way to go.

    1. Hawkins is loving an open forward line with no Cameron, danger will catch what he misses while resting off the ball. IMO

  5. Am I right to believe that De boer wont be playing this weekend alongside Toby Greene? If so think I might use Parish as captain. Bounced back well last week can see him putting gws mids to the sword

    1. Yeah, at the time of writing this I didn’t have any word on whether Kelly would play or if De Boer was in, so I didn’t mention Parish or Zerrett.

If De Boer isn’t named, then np C-ing either of them.

      PARISH v Giants
      L3 v Giants: 115, 72, 91 (93 av.)
      L3 @ MS: 138, 95, 114 (116 av.)

  6. I’m really stuffed for a loop this week.

Looking to go Hall or Zieball into Satan / Danger at this stage.

Big Darcy back in contention next week!

    1. Yeah, posted his stats above. Really good, just a little concerned that he got bodied by De Koning last week; only +9 in HOs and -3 in HTA.

  7. Copped a couple of wacks early probs wasnt himself and missed a lot of his follow up work from the centre bounces , tackles etc , i am backing him in to bounce back and if that crashes it shall be Dangermouse.

    1. Yep, definitely an anomalous game just think Walsh and Steele are the money this week.

      Go for it.

  8. Just a friendly reminder that Huchings back in may impact Steele negatively if he’s played as a run with and not as an inside mid. Shuey out might let Jack off the hook though.

    1. Don’t think we’ll play Hutchings as a tagger, Jim.

Bringing him back into the side to plug some holes and add an experienced set of hands – don’t think he’d have to the tank to knock off Steele first game back either.

      1. Saints could stop, drop and roll and we wouldn’t be able to keep up with them.

        Steele to go large. Watch.

  9. Personally dont think Hutchings would have much luck negating Steeles impact in what I think is his first appearance for the season. However, as an eagles supporter, happy for him to prove me wrong!

  10. Bit conflicted on VC Walsh i remember watching a game seeing North Melbourne tag a opponent unless im wrong

    1. Ali, Jed Anderson tagged Cripps and quite well last year. He is in this week, so he will probably go to one of them

      1

    2. North tagged early in the year, yes, but haven’t run a negating role for the last two months.

Don’t think Anderson goes to anyone and even if he does doubt he keeps up with Walsh.

  11. Walsh VC after a very admirable performance as Captain last week.

Thinking of taking a cheeky look at Mitchell vs Crows as C if Walsh fails.

Hasn’t gone under the tonne for 6 weeks straight.
    Last 2 weeks 131, 171.
    Last 2 against Crows 136, 120

      1. Yeah good call. I recall being at the woeful Crows Bombers game and watching him shut down Parish in the second half.

        Will have a look again.
Can just go Walsh into Danger instead.

  12. I would go Steele – Macrae. But my emergencies don’t really allow it. If Cripps (E) scores badly, then I’d have no loophole.
So Grundy – Steele it is!
