Captaincy Candidates – Round 20

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 27 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DAICOS v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 100, 81, 59 (80 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 130, 132, 118 (127 av.)

First thought was the Blues would definitely go for Daicos after the template Port set out. However injury wiping out the entire Blues midfield (Cripps, Walsh, Cerra) just puts such a chasm between the two sides that the Pies and Daicos should sail. 120+ for him.

BONTEMPELLI v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 164, 100, 120 (128 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 112, 87, 140 (113 av.)

Suppose there could be a match up for Bont but no Tom Green gives the Dogs the immediate up at center bounce. It’s a finalsesque clash so Bont, as well as Libba, solid for 130.

ENGLISH v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 124, 88, 110 (107 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 118, 111, 104 (111 av.)

Briggs is by no means a slouch and has firmed as one of the best rucks going around if you look at his numbers but his around the ground work and TOG have tailed off a little over the last fortnight – which is understandable given his limited exposure to senior footy and the physically taxing nature of his play style. Nothing dramatic, but makes Tingles solid for 120+.

Captaincy Candidates

DUNKLEY v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 153, 116, 148 (139 av.)
  • L3 @ HBS: 87, 151, 96 (111 av.)

I’m now sweating him as a non-owner and am bracing myself for the worst this week. Came back from injury against the Cats with low, eased in TOG but still notched up great contest numbers: 8 tackles, 16 contested and 7 clearances. TOG goes back to 80%+ this week and he pops for 130.

SICILY v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 172, 93, 113 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 58, 172, 128 (119 av.)

A really nice proposition this week for those who managed to hold or bring him in as a finisher. Went off tap against the Saints’ non-forward line in Round 11 and should do the same this weekend. 140+.

Looked into a few Saints but the Hawks tagged Rioli off of HB last week, so there goes Sinclair, and even OB they could pull a few moves on Steele. Plus, RoMo is battling which would drive all of their stocks down.

PETRACCA v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 104, 87, 133 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 119, 113, 95 (109 av.)

Barrelling towards 2024 FWD status and still scoring well. Solid for his average of 120 with that double economy of scoreboard and center bounce.

Steer Clear

MERRETT v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 140, 57, 104 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 105, 136, 137 (126 av.)

Not with Rowbottom potentially gunning for him, not with the Dons in freefall and not as a straight C. Likely flat-ton. Look elsewhere.

Smoky Pick

STEWART v Dockers

  • L3 v Dockers: 91, 187, 102 (127 av.)
  • L3 @ GMS: 104, 124, 111 (113 av.)

Had two large ones in the last month and should feast against Freo at home. Solid for 125+. Even SC gets it and has his projected at 152!

SHEEZEL v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 114 (114 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 114 (114 av.)

Said I was going to give Sheezel a shout before the season’s end and coming up against the Eagles, he gets a spin. Doch pulled a 154 against us off HB and Rioli a 129 the week before. Provided Ziebell remains out of the side, it’s Sheezel’s time to shine with what will be his first 130+ for the season.

History

  • Round 1: Green 132
  • Round 2: Baird 147
  • Round 3: Satan 156
  • Round 4: Tingles 145
  • Round 5: Tingles 137
  • Round 6: Miller 40
  • Round 7: Satan 134
  • Round 8: Satan 136
  • Round 9: Tingles 88
  • Round 10: RoMo 126
  • Round 11: Baird 115
  • Round 12: Daicos 123
  • Round 13: Daicos 118
  • Round 14: Dunkley 137
  • Round 15: Gulden 164
  • Round 16: Daicos 149
  • Round 17: Neale 142
  • Round 18: English 173
  • Round 19: English 134

Verdict

It’s Daicos into Stewart on my end, pending Blues’ sheets. If 1-2 or two of their midfielders manage to get up and there looks to be post-clearance match up for him coming off HF or the bench, then I’ll push Stewart up to VC and go Bont.

However Dunks and Sicily are absolutely the play if you have them.

    1. Quiet Spud! GD doesn’t make mistakes! If he says he’s going Stewart into Bont then I’m sure he’ll figure out a way to do it! 😉

        1. Lol, hey boys.

Ugh? Really? Didn’t notice the double 1:45 start. Wow. That shakes things up.

  1. Stewart into Sicily for me here.
If I trade Walsh to LDU I think he gets the honours over Sicily.

  2. Great Stuff GD.

I like Daicos but think I will go Bont into Dunks. Bont just seems to be ready for a big game and this is huge for The Doggies chances of securing finals spot. Dinks a very solid fall back V Suns.
