Captaincy Candidates – Round 20

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 29 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

STEELE v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 136, 101, 99 (112 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 145, 154, 99 (133 av.)

Tackled his way a ton last week but should click right back into gear against a soft Carlton side. Friday night, replenished Saints gotta jet, Marvel, 140.

MACRAE v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 118, 119, 177 (138 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 119, 135, 147 (134 av.)

Was at his clinical accumulating best in the wet last week, topscoring with 38 touches, 16 contested and 532 MG. Not only are the Crows great for opp. MIDs to beat up on, but the Dogs always pop off in Ballarat. A lock for another 140.

BONTEMPELLI v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 199, 140, 120 (153 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 140, 99, 98 (112 av.)

Same deal as Macrae: will carve up the Crows, loves the Rat, great form bar DE issues. Only concern would be attention from Schoenberg maybe clipping him. Still solid for 125, more if he gets off the chain. Just VC if you’re worried about Schoenberg.

Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Dees:

  • L3 v Dees: 142, 65, 108 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ TBA: (TBA)

Been done in by CD last three weeks, but still racking up tremendous numbers. Dees letting off some large scores, so expect Miller as the Suns primary user to comfortably do 130.

GAWN v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 153, 109, 148 (137 av.)
  • L3 @ TBA: (TBA)

Comes into calculations after having a much better ruck split with Jackson last week (80:20), netting 56 HOs and his opponent this round: the ruck-less Suns. McInerney grabbed 39 HOs, heaps to adv. and 148 SC, can see Gawn hitting 140~ as well.

LYONS v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 115, 108, 127 (117 av.)
  • L3 @ UTAS: 108, 90 (99 av.)

Crows, Dees, Tigers, Hawks and Pies always excellent to VC/C your premo MIDs into. Only held back by an uncharacteristic 45% DE last week but will do what many primary users have done this year and carve up the Hawks for 140+. Zorko also viable, but not Neale.

Steer Clear

GRUNDY v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 134, 61, 132 (109 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 88, 140, 126 (118 av.)

Will still do work across the ground but just not worth considering him into Nic Nat, who historically gets him at HO contests. Sub to low-ton.

Tags expected: Hewett to Parish, Dunstan to Walsh, Flanders to Satan and maybe Ash to Wines.

Smoky Pick

DANGERFIELD v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 75, 89, 99 (88 av.)
  • L3 @ BA: N/A

Even in Tassie, Danger’s form is too good to pass up. Not even a smoky, just had to fit him in. Even with the Roos playing with guts, Danger to just cut through them for 130+.

Verdict

Macrae into Gawn for me, maybe Bont a late VC. Steele optimal Friday night VC if you have him.

Would prefer not to straight C Gawn but I really like him v Suns this week, so he’s in. VC then out of Macrae or Bont. Macrae reliably hitting 140s in good match ups but looks like such a juicy one for Bont – Schoenberg potentially clipping his ceiling only thing dissuading me.

  1. Cheers GD.

Steele to Danger for me (subject to loop options).

Just quickly “Tags expected: Dunstan to Steele?” Assume this is meant to be Dunstan to Walsh?

  2. Cheers GD,

Thinking Macrae -> Darcy at this point.

Could cut Darcy’s leg off and he’d still go 100+ this weekend.

    1. On paper Darcy v Tigers is a great match up, but a little worried about his role.

He actually played second fiddle to Meek up forward last week, with only 9 CBAs to Meek’s 17 – suggesting he’s underdone in account of that knee issue.

If Meek’s dropped, go for it but I’d be apprehensive C’ing Darcy in the FF role.

      1. Really hoping that “calf issue“ / knee was the reason of him being parked so deep.

You’d think if healthy the split would be swapped.

Great points GD, have to keep an eye peeled…

  3. I may need to delay my C choice depending on how my league matchup is going, so who would be the best VC option?

    T/U: Steele
    T/D: Macrae

    1. Honestly Steele -> Macrae is shaping up to be the best play this week.

If I had to choose one, probably Steele, loves the Blues and Curnow hasn’t been tagging.

  4. Steele into Macrae is the safest option, wouldn’t talk anyone out of going unique though lot of massive ceiling options with favourable matchups and you’re unlikely to make up ground at this point playing safe.

    1. With Deven Robertson (rotated through CBAs defensively) out for the Lions and it being Clarkson’s last game, Titch now a great option.

  6. Oliver v Gold Coast

    L3 v Gold Coast: 106, 175, 147 (143 av.)

    L3 @ Metricon Stadium: 177, 100, 112 (130 av.)
(I think these stats are correct)
