Captaincy Candidates – Round 3

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 1 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

GRUNDY v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 104, 100, 110 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 179, 133, 174 (152 av.)

The big rucks bounced back last week, starting with a 51 HO, 10 CP and 4 clearance performance from Grundy. Moved around the ground really well, often floating back for a couple defensive intercepts. Tremendous record at Marvel and solid for 140 with McInerney out and Neale underdone.

MACRAE v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 90, 105, 153 (116 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 137, 90, 133 (120 av.)

It was bittersweet watching Macrae carve up my Eagles last weekend. He was just everywhere with 41 touches and team high CBAs, CPs and clearances. Pretty simple this week: Dogs to smash the Roos, Macrae 130+.

BONTEMPELLI v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 55, 118, 87 (87 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 145, 55, 97 (99 av.)

High impact, efficiency and scoreboard game from Bont last week, will carry that form to the Roos game. Got a feeling one of the Big Dogs press the double ton, could easily be Bont with 125 at a minimum. There is an off chance he gets some defensive attention given, so either just VC him or roll with Macrae/Dunks if concerned.

Captaincy Candidates

MARTIN v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 66, 115, 62 (81 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 120, 158, 93 (124 av.)

This one’s for your Stewy lol! In all seriousness, Martin’s in electric form and playing on a team high CB load instead of long stints forward. Think the Swans back in their system and take it up to the Tigers instead of tagging, so expect 120 from him at a minimum.

STEELE v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 92, 100, 128 (107 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 123, 136, 114 (124 av.)

Been clipped by the absence of a proper #1 ruck at CBs and clearances, but still been ticking along nicely. Dons are heinous and leaking large MID scores, don’t see a scenario where Steele doesn’t go 140.

GAWN v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 150, 149, 156 (152 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: N/A

Returned with a vengeance after his customary Round 1 sub-ton. 40 HOs and plenty to advantage, but more importantly found 17 touches and was floating back to aid the defence. Huge record v GWS, so back Gawn in for another 135+.

Steer Clear

SATAN v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 87, 53, 107 (82 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: N/A

Just a cautionary steer clear given his poor record against the Giants on account of attention from De Boer. Not 100% he cops a hard tag, but just not worth the risk to C him on a Sunday.

Smoky Pick

BRAYSHAW v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 67, 57, 83 (69 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 66, 95, 95 (85 av.)

A popular replacement for Cripps, and rightfully so: accumulates so consistently and now has respectable TOG and team high CBAs. With Fyfe out, expect Brayshaw to safely serve up 120 against a flailing Blues side. Past history v Blues and @ MRVL not really relevant as this is his first year where he’s a crack for a Top 8 MID finish.

Verdict

Grundy into Gawn, although certainly tempted by a Big Dog against the Roos…

  1. With a sample size of 18 games we’re still seeing a very large fall in ball ups compared to previous seasons.

I’ll be aiming at Gawn as my Captain, but not with any great amount of confidence.

Were they playing anyone but GWS I’d be taking Satan.

As far as Dusty goes, it’d certainly be a brave choice against Sydney but he’s certainly been in top notch form.

    Best of luck, people.

  2. Literally any Dogs midfielder against us tomorrow. They’ve got a history of racking them up against us.

  3. Eveb tho Grundy is very tempting, I’ll take a punt at Macrae into Gawn.
Just the current form of the dogs midfield against North is too much to ignore!
Fingers crossed and good luck everyone!

  4. Something to consider (for me anyway) is if there is any loopholes playing. I’ve had 30 playing so far each round and likely 29 this week as Sharp is out. With teams been named only the day before, the opportunity to loophole is harder to come by unless you have a definite loophole player. For example, I want to go Grundy to Macrae but unless someone gets dropped I won’t be able to loophole Grundy at all. And with teams being announced late I won’t know of any potential rookies being dropped until potentially all captaincy options have played. If I thought Brockman/Kosi would get dropped from Hawks and be a loophole, all other teams have played at this point and my only captain option is Tom Stewart.
I think Macrae will score more than Grundy, but by the time Macrae plays I may not even have the option of a loophole for a VC score so it may be wasted on Grundy.

Therefore I’m thinking I have to go VC Macrae and hope a loophole opens up, otherwise chuck the C on Oliver Sunday arvo.

Hope that makes sense, anyone else in the same situation and have a way to work this out?

    1. Absolutely correct!

Imagine you loophole through Sharp, but he gets the sub jumper an hour before the game and plays! Risky!

  5. Can’t decide between Dunkley . Bont v North.

    or Steele. V the Bombers.

So I’m sticking with old faithful.

    Grundy into Gawn.

Grundy V Fullaton and Ballenden tonight, not exactly household names !

I’ll take anything north of 135.

  6. Thanks for the shout out GD but Dusty isn’t getting near my captain’s armband this week. Hewitt and/or Mills will shut him out of the game and he will forget what a Sherrin looks like ().
No Grundy in my team so Macrae gets the VC for me. Gawn to mop up if needed (unlikely).

    1. Put a playing mid on the bench. put the E on him. only him in the mids.
Put a non playing player on field . Put the captain on him.

You will get V/C Grundy. score x2 and the emergency mids score.

      Best of luck.

  8. Captain Highmore all the way! He is my only non-player at this stage so boy was I happy to see him omitted after VC Gawn’s tremendous effort.

  9. Had the VC on Bont so wondering who I should put the C on?
