Typically I place equal weight on the VC and C candidates, however this week is tricky on two levels. Firstly, this week’s three captaincy candidates (Fyfe, Neale, Gawn) stand a cut above the rest on both form and statistical history. However, loophole options look bleak: Sydney plays on Thursday, many traded out their non-playing R3 for Pittonet and there’s no popular loop for Sunday. Thus, the challenge of this round will be getting the VC/C the candidates you actually want.
Vice-Captaincy Candidates
BONTEMPELLI v Swans
- L3 v Swans: 158, 105, 140 (134 av.)
- L3 @ SCG: 92, 128, 100 (107 av.)
Been a tough couple of weeks for Bont. With De Boer off his back, Dunkley out and the Dogs’ season at a crossroads, I’m expecting him to respond with a 130.
GRUNDY v Giants
- L3 v Giants: 157, 139, 82 (126 av.)
- L3 @ GS: 157, 82, 91 (110 av.)
Not much to discuss here: Grundy is a very good ruck man, Sauce is a very bad ruck man. Expecting 125, a solid option if you don’t have a late enough loop.
ROWELL v Freo
- L3 v Freo: N/A
- L3 @ MS: 141, 171, 80 (131 av.)
This kid is f*cking insane! I touted him last week and after I couldn’t loop Neale and Gawn didn’t play I rolled the dice on him and he delivered. With the Suns improving you can expect Rowell to go at 115+ from here on out.
Captaincy Candidates
FYFE v Suns
- L3 v Suns: 124, 160, 140 (141 av.)
- L3 @ MS: 166, 124, 151 (147. av)
The stats speak for themselves: 140+ averages against the Suns and at Metricon. He’ll be a popular trade in for Dunkley this week, will reward owners immediately upwards of 130.
NEALE v Crows
- L3 v Crows: 148, 110,55 (104 av.)
- L3 @ G: 166, 171, 103 (147 av.)
I thought he might cop some attention from the Eagles last week, but he continues to dominate. Crows will put up feeble resistance, so you can lock Neale in for 140.
GAWN v Cats
- L3 v Cats: 116, 139, 93 (116 av.)
- L3 @ MCG: 119, 99, 134 (117. av)
With Stanely out (who would’ve been dominated anyway), Gawn is going to reach even greater heights v the four gamer Darcy Fort. Expecting a minimum of 150 from Gawn, with a double-ton definitely on the cards.
Steer Clear
MITCHELL v Roos
- L3 v Roos: 75, 106, 178 (120 av.)
- L3 @ MRVL: 108, 192, 79 (126 av.)
A lot of people will be tempted Titch on a Sunday however he understandably hasn’t recaptured his Brownlow-year form just yet. While he may put up a 120~, the aforementioned C options are just too compelling. Look elsewhere.
Smoky Pick
BOAK v Eagles
Boak and Port have been popping off up at a Metricon over the last few weeks – conversely, the Eagles are (unfortunately) useless in Queensland. Boak on track for a 120 here.
- L3 v Eagles: 95, 95, 71 (87 av.)
- L3 @ MS: 159, 125, 76 (120 av.)
Verdict
Won’t be surprised if Gawn, Fyfe and Neale combine for 500 SC this week. So, for me, you’ve got look at a 2 of them for the VC/C.

Anyone afraid Swans chuck Hewett on Bont?
He’s ran with Bont before to little effect
What about Macrae?
Best VC option:
TU – Macrae
TD – Grundy
Thoughts on trading in Boak?
T/U: Good for 110-115+ average for the rest of the year
T/D: Old legs will slow him down and will average around 100
I like it, POD but I think he may be about 105-110 for the year.
Faded a fair bit last year and I know this year is different but still a chance.
I have other issues otherwise he would be on my radar. Has a bank of home games coming up after rd5 when they return to SA.
Grundy into Neale 125 passmark
Neale into Goldy for me (Comben from NM is currently on my fwd bench). Won’t accept sub 115 and will take 130 . 115-130 will be a coin flip.
Grundy into Gawn.
Neale a strong case for either VC or C though.
Lucky to still have Comben as my loop
Torn between the same three. Have a hunch the two rucks go big, and Neale due for a mere b130. The good thing is if wrong, its only the difference between the two scores and I’m betting that wont be a lot.
Neal into gawn for me. I’ll have to make a call at half time roughly if I want to use gawn as the c
Agreed. Neale into Gawn. Bennell into Oliver is my loop.
Grundy into Rowell, 125 pass mark
99% Grundy into Gawn, little nervous about Grundy getting one of those annoying 110-125 VC scores.
I’m with you Roo Bloke…. Neal into Goldy P/ mark 145 – 150.
The Crows have Lice !!
Grundy into Neale
have i got it right (loophole thing)if i have Grundy VC and D Robertson in mid as C and i had D.Shiel E on bench, watch Grundy if happy with his score leave alone,
otherswise and can swap Shiel and Robertson with
C ???
Yep, Richard.
VC on Grundy, E on a benched playing MID, C on a fielded non playing MID.
Gawn captain
Who to VC?
TU: Grundy
TD: Rowell
Bont into Grundy
All comes down to how much physical pressure Grundy can take from Mumford. If he can stick it out, Grundy VC best choice. Gawn as C. Think Neale will be brought back down to earth, even though playing crows. No player is ever a “lock for 140”
I’ve gonenic Nat into neale
Neale into Gawn.
Will loop Bennell into Oliver at 3/4 time if Neale is killing it.
I’m predicting Neale to go 150+.
