Captaincy Candidates – Round 5

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 15 2021

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

STEELE v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 114, 63, 83 (87 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 150, 132, 123 (135 av.)

Steele, much to my chagrin as an Eagles supporter and non-owner, was insane last week. 33 touches, 17 contested (50%+), goal to ice the game and did it all with Crouch and Billings firing. Tigers leak clearances and pay opposition MIDs no attention. If you’ve got Steele, gotta VC him this week. Honestly don’t see anything less than 140.

MACRAE v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 169, 139, 189 (166 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 108, 137, 90 (112 av.)

32 touches, 15 contested, 8 tackles, 7 clearances last Saturday- just doing Macrae things. Suns ran a tagger last week, thinking they do the same against the competition’s best midfield this round. Usually Bont absorbs the tag as that impact player, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Macrae gets a look. Plays early as VC, so no harm no foul. A lock for 140 if they leave him alone, great record  v Suns

DUNKLEY v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 80, 94 (87 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 132, 132, 128 (131 av.)

What’s scary about Dunkley is how well he’s been scoring even as that 5th MID with Macrae, Bont, Libba and Treloar all on bigger CB loads than him of late. If Suns deploy a tag it goes to Macrae or Bont, so could see Dunks doing 130+ this week.

Captaincy Candidates

MERRETT v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 87, 155, 120 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 122, 125, 97 (115 av.)

Ugh, been underwhelming to start the season but he’s got a decent ceiling against the Lions and got some experience at the Gabba in the hubs last season. With the Dons competitive and Neale ailing, can see Zerrett dominating clearances and stoppages on Saturday night. 125 minimum, with a chance to finally go large.

SATAN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 121, 96, 128 (115 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 130, 122, 96 (116 av.)

Even with moderate attention from O’Connor, Satan still managed 34 touches, 14 contested, 6 tackles and 6 clearances. Plays the G well, unlikely to receive a tag and the Dees should belt the Hawks. Solid for 130. Titch also an option if you don’t have Satan.

GAWN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 185, 127, 112 (141 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 135, 93, 163 (130 av.)

Just deadly last week with 41 HOs and plenty of work around the ground with a goal, 6 marks, 10 CPs and 7 clearances. Tears it up at the G and, again, the Dees will likely get the drop on the Hawks. A lock for 135.

Steer Clear

GRUNDY v Eagles

  • L3 v Eagles: 61, 132, 137 (110 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 118, 61, 144 (108 av.)

Gets given a bath when he comes up against Nic Nat for four quarters, so probably worth looking elsewhere. Can still ton this week, just nothing captaincy worthy.

Smoky Pick

DANGERFIELD v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 89, 99, 137 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ GMHBA: 104, 75, 101 (93 av.)

For those who held Danger during his suspension, expect to be rewarded this week. He’ll be hungry, the Cats will eviscerate the Roos and he should be good for 135. Expecting a 3 vote performance.

Verdict

Don’t have a late enough loop to engage any of the options past Saturday afternoon, so it’ll be Macrae into Gawn for me. If you’ve got Steele, VC him.

          1. He He.

            I was kinda kidding !

I still wouldn’t buy Danger for $611k at this stage of the season.
The way the rookies are looking it would probably mean you are still fielding multiple rookies post Byes.

You may never get to “Full Premo.”

            Buy low sell high.

            1. All good mate. Reckon he is a chance of making his BE but agree I’ll be waiting a week to see how he goes.

  1. What are people doing with most people’s starting loophole (A.Fyfe) playing so early. Would love to go Macrae into Gawn but it doesn’t look possible.

  2. Thanks Gunboat.

    I’m going Steele into Gawn.

I started Steele over Clarry for this very reason. My reasoning was if I’m paying $650 I want a V/C option. It seems I got lucky as Steele has started very strong.

When Mummy was named I was worried about Grundy last week,I really should of followed my gut and V/C’ed Steele instead.

Grundy ( as you mentioned ) has Nic Nat at Optus. No thanks.

Steele looks like a very solid option

I only hope its not a week too late.

    Thanks again and good luck.

    1. Looks like I was a week late on Steele. 🙁

Still he was great after Qtr time ( he was on 9 after some terrible clangers ) in a well beaten side.

Looks like I will be relying on Big Max again.

  3. Grundy into Macrae with me as a non-Gawn owner and having Daniel as my main chance to loop.

    1. Did you read the article, Froff? Grundy the Steer Clear this week. I’d caution against him.

Got any other heavy hitting MIDs instead?

  5. Hi folks
in a weird situation, only have Highmore as my loop hole with SK playing
tonite. Hoping either Kosi, Brockman, Jordon or Dow are dropped. Locking at Macrae/ Gawn
Held Danger who owes me =”C”

  6. I’m probably going to go the Bont into Clarry.
No Macrae or Gawn in my team(yet).
Toss of the coin between Dunks and Bont as Vc as I think both will score well.
Oliver looks to be in good form and should have a good game against the hawks.
However I did choose Grundy last week as Captain so don’t pay too much.attention to this post. Haha….. best of luck
