Captaincy Candidates – Round 6

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 21 2022

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

GREEN v Saints

  • L3 v Saints: 50, 69 (60 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: 59, 64 (62 av.)

No premium scoring history to go one as Green’s clearly having a breakout year. With the Giants fighting for their season and Green’s red hot form, a 120 from him shouldn’t be problem.

MACRAE v Crows

  • L3 v Crows: 131, 118, 119 (123 av.)
  • L3 @ MARS: 131, 137, 119 (129 av.)

Macrae’s gone 130+ 4/5 times this season, including two 150+’s and never gets a second look from opposition. Crows down in Ballarat this week, a lock for 130+.

BRAYSHAW v Blues

  • L3 v Blues: 135, 66, 67 (89 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 95, 96, 189 (127 av.)

Currently averaging 127.8 as the #4 SC player right now and he’s the #1 score involvement player in the comp (ty to FT for texting me that tidbit). Firming for a Top 8 finish, so comes into captaincy calculations this week. Potentially gets standing attention from Hewett like Miller did, but should still be solid for 120 on his home deck.

Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 115, 81, 78 (91 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 105, 140, 120 (122 av.)

Had 3 consecutive weeks of defensive attention resulting in a departure from his customary 130+’s. Also some concern about his low tackling numbers, but his two way running, effort and diving smothers are all still competition best. Juiced to play the Lions, so back to him to bounce back with 125 even if Berry harasses him – who’s shoulder does look ready to pop…

NEALE v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 64, 151, 85 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 107, 118, 134 (120 av.)

Duelling it out with Macrae as the #1 MID right now and could be able to wrest the title back if the Lions really do the Suns dirty. 130 at a minimum.

SATAN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 114, 96, 105 (105 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 118, 146, 112 (125 av.)

Surprisingly didn’t get attention from Ash/De Boer last week and unfortunately for owners (but not those angling to bring him in) he failed to carpe diem. Tigers at the G should be a different story though, a real shot for 140.

Steer Clear

STEELE v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 91, 149, 98 (113 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: N/A

Previously going after Miller and Brayshaw, the Giants all of a sudden decided not to tag Satan last week. Who knows what their deal is. After their biggest loss of the season, I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to contain Steele to a low-ton so just look elsewhere and hope he goes well anyway.

Smoky Pick

GAWN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 147, 163, 145 (152 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 130, 117, 92 (113 av.)

Coming off the back of two dynamic performances, Gawn’s got an insane 152 average against the ailing Tigers and makes for a great high ceiling Sunday fall back if you don’t have Satan. Petracca will also do the trick.

Verdict

100% Macrae VC. Then, if needed, Miller, Neale and Brayshaw all viable C’s on my end. Likely Neale if I have to choose. All three Dees premos viable into the Tigers if you’ve got em’.

  1. My only Loop so far in this round is Owens and he plays first game. Unless another absentee comes along. I’ll be taking the safe option and straight out Captaining Macrae.

  2. Great stuff as usual GD, and loving the newly proposed title.

Macrae into Oliver this week for me currently, but Miller or Neale will also come into calculations once I see team lineups.

Call me crazy, but not opposed to Grundy either, can’t see Draper restricting him too much, averaging 146 in the past 3 ANZAC clashes

    1. Yeah, Grundy to bounce back this week and punish those trading him out but a premo MIDs much better for a straight C.

Grundy’s floor and ceiling are whack rn.

  3. Macrae for me.

His record at Mars is ridiculous. The Crows have a habit of giving up big scores to midfielders. Clarry seems to go 200 against them every year !

Oliver or Neale as back up if Macrae is abducted by aliens at half time.

      1. Not a relevant consideration, Daniel.

Less than 50% CBA attendance for Sloane this season, with none last week even before he got injured.

Their first choice midfield is Laird, Keays and Crouch (highest CBAs), plus a kid (Schoenberg/Berry) rotating through.

  4. Hey GD,

    Great article.

Is Tim English a good VC option even if I have Macrae?

    Last 3 vs Crows: 102 (High 111, Low 90)
    Last 3 @ Mars: 117

Having a breakout year. Especially interesting if Martin not named.

    1. Hey, Magic.

Yeah, English on fire rn and looking like F1 atm. Just hard to VC/C him ahead of Macrae.

  5. Yeah pretty easy call this week.

I’m pretty confident Steele goes ok as well. Ash did little to stop Brayshaw in R4 and they gave up on the tag last week V Melbourne even though it had worked on Clarry in the past. I think GWS goes head to head with the Saints midfield this week. Greene back in forward should free up Taranto to head back to the midfield.

I think with Ryder still missing ( will this mean Pruess is name as solo ruck ? ) Leon will back his guys to beat the Saints at stoppage with out having to resort to a tag. I maybe wrong but this is a huge game for GWS at home and I think they will throw everything at the Saints early.

Thanks again for a great article and best of luck this week. ( we aren’t matched up 😉 )

  6. Geez, having the single best captaincy candidate as the ‘smoky’ is misleading the punters I think

  7. Fingers crossed I can actually get a donut on the bench this week. I traded my donut to O’Driscoll last week but not complaining about that move.

    Macrae into Neale for me.
Macrae outright if I don’t have a loop.

  8. Gonna go pretty left of field here but does De Goey deserve any consideration?

Big game, contract year, been in strong form to show so far and Essendon just leaking points.

    1. Yeah. Good call, CM.

Getting team high CBAs, averaging 24 touches and 2 goals.

      Dons also very ass atm.

      Here are De Goey’s stats:

      DE GOEY v Dons

      L3 v Dons: 102, 85, 103 (97 av.)
      L3 @ MCG: 79, 95, 102 (92 av.)

    1. Similar to Magic’s query about English, it’s just hard to go Smith ahead of Macrae.

Will go large this weekend. If you’ve got a strong feeling, VC him – personally I’d have a hard time going him over Macrae though.

      Good luck, Paul.

  9. Macrae -> Anzac Medalist De Goey 😉

JDG and Crisp a chance to go 120+ each, the way Bombers looking right now

  10. Steele into McCrae for me
Was never going to VC Steele but now that the tagger De Boer has been omitted I’m liking Steele going big now. Good luck all

    1. Reckon it’s a good call FBS.
Surprised DeBoer out but maybe GWS have moved into the era of the ‘run-with’ player (Ash), rather than the ‘tagger’.

I Like Steele, building into the season nicely. Seems to always have a better second half to the year

  11. No Macrae in my team and Dixon is the only loophole at this stage.

    VC – Steele
    C – Oliver
