Captaincy Candidates – Round 6

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on April 20 2023

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

BONTEMPELLI v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 100, 149, 107 (119 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 96, 156, 149 (134 av.)

Put together a big one last week and should continue to pop off with that elite clearance form. 125 to kick things off. His ruck opponents don’t seem to matter, so Tingles also viable.

DAWSON v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 80, 73, 78 (77 av.)
  • L3 @ UTAS: N/A (N/A)

Maybe gets a look from Nash after they used him on Green after HT to great effect but in his form and scoring profile, he’ll still haul ass to a 140.

LAIRD v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 125, 178, 111 (138 av.)
  • L3 @ UTAS: 111 (111 av.)

Overshadowed by his partner in crime the other day but Baird still had 37 touches, a game high 18 contested and 6 tackles. 2 behinds and 3 FA trimmed him back a bit as well. Hawks on a small deck remain a great gig for him. Solid for 130.

Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 104, 167, 123 (131 av.)
  • L3 @ HBS: 109, 113, 125 (116 av.)

Yet to go out and out large this season per se but still done straight tons and looked great each week. North at home ripe for 130+.

SATAN v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 168, 114, 96 (126 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 156, 113, 126 (132 av.)

Had his “worst” game of the season and still had 41 touches and 26 contested. The bulk of those not rewarded considering they came in junk time and he’d started slow. Will put in a more fulsome performance against the Tigers at the G. A lock for 125.

GRUNDY v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 140, 115, 117 (124 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 143, 69, 129 (114 av.)

Grundy having an absolute go of it for owners. Will have another large one, this time against stand in Tigers’ ruck Ben Miller. Enjoy the ride till Maxxy gets back. Continues the fun with a 130 on Monday.

DAICOS v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 79, 71 (75 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 109, 149, 129 (129 av.)

I just can’t get away with not naming Daicos each week. Thought the Saints, of all people, would tag him but nope! Cruises to another 130. Dons were the first to go for him last year but the kid is just cracked. 130, lock it in.

Steer Clear

BRAYSHAW v Dogs

  • L3 v Dogs: 93, 120, 77 (97 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 84, 106, 106 (99 av.)

Just been heinous! FT will step in as his publicist and tell you he’s injured. Maybe so but his efforts, numbers and contest to contest work have been horrific. Low-tons the norm for now. Steer clear both as a captaincy candidate and selection.

Smoky Pick

NEALE v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 121, 164, 87 (124 av.)
  • L3 @ MO: 121, 85 (103 av.)

That’s what I’m talking about bay-bay! Finally. Neale strikes back after a paltry HB happy, low accu start. Always a great sign when premos beat up on sides they should. His hopefully permanent return to form coupled with the Giants main man being suspended should set him up for a 140 this week.

Verdict

A really tricky one this week. Lot of great options but a tricky loop landscape. For me, the ideal combination is Miller into Satan but Laird and Neale make strong cases against soft opponents.

  1. Great work again GD, really spoilt for choice this week with the long weekend of games.

Would you rank ideal ideal captaincy order as below (1 being the best option)?

    1. Oliver
    2. Miller
    3. Laird
    4. Bont
    5. Dawson

    1. Probably in that exact order but all within a whisker of each other, Joe.

Freo been weak OB so Bont beats up on them, Baird and Dawson shred Hawks with Baird slightly ahead just on the chance Nash goes to Dawson, anyone v Roos is great and then Satan OG.

Who’s available as a loop will dictate combos. Satan, Baird, Neale and Miller all in contention on my end.

      Best of luck.

      1. Hi GD,

Brilliant work again – Thank You!

I like The Bont and English as a VC options, then into Oliver (as Tigers don’t tag).

        Cheers,

        Paul

  2. My Chesser or Green loopholes is forcing me to a Friday night VC. (Unless Davey misses again). So Bont as VC. Dartboard for C. Maybe Daicos on Tuesday. Hate waiting for the last game for C, so nay end up plonking it on some random earlier and regret it, if Bont fails.

  3. Finn Maginness potentially tagging Jordan Dawson having done that successfully last year.

“I see him playing a role like that again, whether that’s this week we’ll determine that at selection later today.”

    1. I am with your thumbs up.
      Bont into Laird
Was originally thinking Laird into Oliver but with Oliver battling the flu and having to rely on Davey for the loop it just made it all to hard.
K.I.S S. (Keep it simple stupid)

Steering Clear of English tonight , I’m just not sure he can go huge V Darcy.
