Captaincy Candidates – Round 7

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

SATAN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 139, 115, 121 (125 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 168, 118, 146 (144 av.)

Guaranteed to clean up the Tigers and did not disappoint: 168, 41 touches, 22 contested and a key deliverer of the Dees ungodly amount of the entries. A similarly juicy match up against the Hawks (who just let Mills double ton) at home should see a cool 135 banked.

GAWN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 95, 172, 185 (151 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 123, 130, 117 (123 av.)

Similarly, Maxxy is in a rich vein of form. He’s already got tremendous match up stats in this one but with Jackson now corona’d, he’ll have Lynch (who let Ladhams go 160) all to himself. Goes vintage for 160.

STEELE v Port

  • L3 v Port: 145, 105, 114 (121 av.)
  • L3 @ CS: 126 (126 av.)

After an uninspiring start the Man of Steele is inconspicuously pumping out some strong scores, with a hard fought 140 against the Giants the latest addition. Port an atrocious center bounce and contested side, so Steele to sail to 140 without issue.

Captaincy Candidates

MILLER v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 115, 122, 84 (107 av.)
  • L3 @ MCG: 115, 84, 84 (94 av.)

“How’s Miller a captaincy candidate after his last month?” they howled! We’ve been over the fact he copped 3 weeks of consecutive attention and last week’s 99 was a tale of two sets of stats. The bad: only 27 touches, 4 frees against, 7 clangers and 65% DE. The good: 15/27 contested, 8 tackles, 515 MG and his characteristic two way running. In the end it evened out for a 99. To this week, he hasn’t been down to the G a lot but the Pies are one of the best sides to VC/C inside MIDs into. Back him to return with a 120.

MACRAE v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 154, 122, 137 (138 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 153, 92, 142 (129 av.)

Stagnated after an incredible first quarter and bombed as a VC, with ROB and Keays dominating clearance and stoppages. Not to worry, Dogs will be desperate to savage a win against the Dons at Marvel – perfect match up for a Macrae 130.

NEALE v Swans

  • L3 v Swans: 77, 55, 109 (80 av.)
  • L3 @ SCG: 134, 110, 44 (96 av.)

Doesn’t have the greatest match up stats and the Swans have deployed Mills defensively this season but a hot contest, unlike the Q Clash, should be bring out the best in Neale. Serviceable for 125 if you need a late fall back.

Steer Clear

BRAYSHAW v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 97, 136, 73 (102 av.)
  • L3 @ GMHBA: N/A

Potentially gets harrassed by O’Connor and never played at the Cattery before, look for upside elsewhere. Could get stuck with a low-ton.

Smoky Pick

CRIPPS v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 75, 75, 123 (91 av.)
  • L3 @ MRVL: 162, 57, 73 (97 av.)

Looked phenomenal returning from injury with 32 touches, 19 contested and a lazy three goals. Superb. Goes to school on the Roos for 140.

Verdict

Steele, Miller, Satan and Macrae all options on my end. Really like Steele into Port but thinking I’ll go Satan VC, just so I don’t miss out on a 160 if he goes nuts, into Macrae. If you’ve got Gawn, there’s a case to give him a look over Satan.

  1. Thanks GD. Always valuable intel.

Gawn VC for me but C choice is a bit more difficult.

TU – Steele (will have to be quick)
    TD – Macrae
    Comment – Cripps

  2. Satan/MaCrae for me at this stage….though giving consideration to Witts, might go large against the Pies with no Grundy??
    Thoughts?

    1. I was looking at Witts as well, but won’t be able to run him as VC and don’t feel that comfortable going straight-C on him.

  3. VC Max/Satan -> Macrae

Surprisingly Gawn averages higher with Jackson in then without. But it’s Max Lynch….

Have to think Clarry runs a muck against our mids.

    Hard one to split.

    1. Thanks Gunboat.

I’m kinda split this week. Like Abs I have Gawn and Clarry and can’t split them.

So let the crowd decide. VC this week..

      T/U Gawn..

      T/D Oliver..

      Thanks folks..

  4. Great analysis GD. Is there any scope to have a poll in the Captaincy Candidates each week so we can all click on who we’re going with for VC/C. Would be great to see who the group is going with.

  5. Can’t split Gawn and Oliver for VC. Probably going Clarry. Was thinking the white hot Dunkley for C instead of Macrae. But really thinking I won’t need it.

  6. Any Truth about another 2 more Melbourne players could be out because of the Rona? Imagine if they were Gawn and Oliver!

  7. If Baldwin from the bombers gets named I have no bench player to loophole just due to the way the schedule falls so may have to straight captain someone.
If Baldwin is out then it’s new recruit Gawn into safety MacRae for me.
