Captaincy Candidates – Round 7

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 16 2020

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

DANGERFIELD v Pies

  • L3 v Pies: 97, 137, 65 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 57, 100, 141 (99 av.)

Wound back the clock last week and rewarded those who’ve held fat. Duncan out and the Pies inside depth should force Danger onto the ball in what will be a tight game. Solid for 125.

GRUNDY v Cats

  • L3 v Cats: 81, 137, 83 (100 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 137, 150, 98 (128 av.)

Didn’t mentioned Grundy last week, just knew he’d get double teamed by the Hawks – different story this week though. While Fort’s actually a decent decent tap ruckman, Grundy will comfortably reassert himself as captain material. Nothing short of 130.

MACRAE v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 137, 131, 100 (123 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 138, 97, 101 (112 av.)

Vindicating my nomination of him as last week’s smoky pick, Macrae went vintage and sailed to 138 even in a damning loss. Dons midfield will be undermanned with Shiel out, expecting Macrae to carry his return to form with another 130.

Captaincy Candidates

WHITFIELD v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 125, 97, 111 (111 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 93, 85, 97 (92 av.)

Been finding much more of the football, just needs to clean up his use and he can put up 120 this week. Giants will look to clip the Lions midfield by giving Neale some attention, which in turn should open things up for Whitfield to burst through.

MITCHELL v Demons

  • L3 v Demons: 90, 108, 79 (92 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 122, 101, 181 (135 av.)

Titch was hampered last week by two blood rule spells on the bench and Hawks getting pounded, but still managed to score well with team high CBAs and touches. Weaker opponent in the Dees will see him improve to 130 at a minimum this week.

GAWN v Hawks

  • L3 v Hawks: 127, 112, 115 (118 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 153, 55* (104 av.)

Will definitely be able hold his own against the Hawks double rucks better than Grundy did and a safe bet for 125, but probably won’t reach the heights we’ve all been accustomed to over the last month.

Steer Clear

NEALE v Giants

  • L3 v Giants: 151, 85, 117 (118 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 151, 117, 154 (141 av.)

GWS oddly haven’t deployed De Boer as a tagger this season, but SURELY they set him on to Neale this week or at the very least task Coniglio with him? Either way, give Neale a break from carrying your team this week. Sub-ton if tagged.

Smoky Pick

SMITH v Dons

  • L3 v Dons: 86 (86 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 119 (119 av.)

I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that someone with a mullet in the year 2020 can be a good player. Smith continued the trend of team high tackles and CBAs over the weekend, with 23 to Bont and Macrae’s 18. Definitely a chance to hit his BE of 132 if you don’t have any of the early aforementioned candidates.

Verdict

Grundy into Gawn. This game isn’t hard.

  1. Nothing fancy here. Neale into Goldy for me.

Goldy’s not getting much SCT love this year but he’s scored 129+ in 5 of 6 games. That’s definitely VC/C type material.

    1. Lol. We get it, RB – you have Goldy.

I swear you bring it up atleast twice a week, usually to complain that an article hasn’t mentioned him.

Yes, he’ll score very well v Soldo this week but he’s only in 5% of teams. Doesn’t make sense for me to mention him.

      1. Yeah, i bring Goldy up a bit but that’s only cause he keeps getting forgotten about by some of the SCT writers. I thought the point of a captaincy thread was to give the best captaincy options, not just to pick from the popular ones. Aren’t the SCT writers and contributors meant to provide info on the best options for the SCT community?

He’s 2nd on total points this season and 3rd on avg yet doesn’t feature in a captaincy thread?? Shouldn’t matter that he’s in only 5% of teams.

        1. Goldy won’t keep it up. He’s a terrible player and should be delisted ASAP. I don’t know why we persist with that dud. Ugh.

              1. … and in one post you’re saying he’s terrible and should be delisted but in another you’re saying he’s decent. Take your trolling elsewhere.

                1. TR was Top 100 last year, RB. He’s able to separate his love for North from SC – take some notes.

                  1. GD. Times have clearly changed and maybe our little community site isn’t the same anymore but I reckon this is pretty poor from a SCT writer really. Do you agree with TRoo Roo that Goldy should be delisted! Ridiculous.

                    1. Lol. I never cosigned what he said. That’s his opinion, and it was between you and him as two North supporters. Just mentioned that he knows his footy and SC.

Also, I don’t recall asking for a review of my writing from you. Give it a rest.

                    2. Geez RB, I was just winding you up a little, north fan to north fan. Goldy is a great player who has a couple of good years left in him. He’s hit a purple patch early this year. However, I don’t think long term he will be anywhere near Gawn and Grundy in both AFL and SC terms.

                    3. Like i said GD, times have changed on here.

                      * You leave off #3 player in comp this season
                      * I comment that you’ve left him off
                      * You tell me he’s not popular enough to be mentioned in the thread
                      * Troo Roo claims the guy that’s 3rd in the comp is terrible and should be delisted
                      * I call him out on it

No probs with you til here GD btw

                      * You side with him AND try to shut me down for some reason

Feel mighty p…ed about this after the years I’ve spent writing on this site for an upstart to throw barbs at me.

I’ll move on but just wanted you to know GD that you’re out of line on this one.

                      10
                  2. All respect for GD has been lost after this, the blokes got a point, Goldsteins simply on fire this year. Who cares how many people own a player? I want to know what the best captaincy option is, not the most popular one. You don’t win SuperCoach by doing what everyone else is doing, thought you of all people would know that.

                    1. “You don’t win SuperCoach by doing what everyone else is doing”. Wow, how independent, reading an article to decide who your captain is. Maybe he’s doing you a favour by not promoting your POD.

Kids today, so spoilt, an SO outraged and offended.

              2. Goldy has been the best ruckman in the comp this season. He’s also rated No.1 in comp by AFL Ratings. Would also be in North’s Top 10 of all-time.

Wish SC would allow us to alter formation like FPL. Imagine if we could have 3 rucks and 5 forwards instead of 2&6!

  2. Steer clear of Neale was a surprise after the season he has had so far. Better be safe than sorry though

    1. Yeah, Nato, just not worth the risk. Even if Neale gets no attention from GWS (which I’d be shocked by), Grundy v Fort in the rain is hard to pass up.

  3. Anyone have thoughts on how the rain may affect either Grundys or Dangers game tonight? Potentially more hit outs…

    3

    1
    1. I think it could maybe be a positive for Grundy as it would likely be more contested. If there are more stoppages, he can get more hit outs and potentially more contested possessions.
Danger might get more CP’s too

      3

      0
      1. Yep, exactly

Lot of stoppages and opportunities for contested possessions. So, plenty of easy HO contests for Grundy and clean users like Danger can rack up high value clearances.

        2

    2. I suspect it will favor Grundy scoring wise, abit like the MCG prelim last year.

I’m concerned Yeo might go to Danger so bad score for both in that case

    3. I remember a game last season when it was wet and I didn’t put the VC on Grundy for that reason and he went BIG – so, Grundy for me tonight.

  4. Ceglar to miss with injury, gives me more confidence on Gawn if Grundy doesn’t go well in the wet. Death, Taxes and Grundy>Gawn.

  5. No Duncan will be good for Grundy
Menegola or danger might have a night out if fort can hold his own
