Captaincy Candidates – Round 8

Written by Gunboat Diplomacy on July 23 2020

Vice-Captaincy Candidates

MACRAE v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 189, 139, 108 (145 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 122, 138, 97 (119 av.)

What a surprise, Luke Beveridge: when you play Macrae ON the ball, he does well. He’s now put together back to back serviceable scores, safe for 125 against the Suns this week.

BONTEMPELLI v Suns

  • L3 v Suns: 124, 80, 121 (108 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 105, 116, 58 (93. av)

With the Suns backing in their own midfielders, Bont should be free to fly off the handle. Had a nice 1-2 going with English week, should repeat for 130.

CONIGLIO v Tigers

  • L3 v Tigers: 102, 90, 121 (104 av.)
  • L3 @ GS: 141, 103, 49 (98 av.)

The threat of being dropped propelled Coniglio into action last week, suspect Deledio’s critique of his side will do the same v the Tigers. GWS will look to exact revenge after last year’s “grand final” and Cogs to pop off with a 140.

Captaincy Candidates

GAWN v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 46, 97, 78 (74 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 109, 174 (142 av.)

Big Maxxy’s got a dirty record v Lions, but his form is insane right now. Jackson’s inclusion also allows himto rest back and rack up some intercepts. Hard to see him serving up anything less than 130.

NEALE v Demons

  • L3 v Demons: 137, 78, 140 (118 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 142, 109, 117 (122 av.)

After being hogtied by De Boer last week, expect Neale to return and pump out nothing short of 130. Key will be deciphering if he’ll go bigger than Gawn.

DANGERFIELD v Freo

  • L3 v Freo: 57, 94, 138 (96 av.)
  • L3 @ OS: 127, 57, 100 (95 av.)

As predicted, Danger went vintage last week in an attempt to drag the Cats to victory. Injuries will force him onto the ball, rather than being parked forward. Solid for 120.

Steer Clear

CRIPPS v Roos

  • L3 v Roos: 123, 92, 97 (104 av.)
  • L3 @ G: 85, 93, 118 (99 av.)

Been very underwhelming this year, and will unfortunately serve up another sub-ton this week. Playing with an injury and will cop a tag from McDonald, brace yourselves.

Smoky Pick

PETRACCA v Lions

  • L3 v Lions: 83, 85, 88 (85 av.)
  • L3 @ MS: 92, 86 (89 av.)

Looked superb last week; got exemplary service from Gawn, racked up hardball gets and led the Dees for contested possessions. Safe for 110 with the potential for another monster if you’re without Gawn or Neale.

Verdict

Given the safety of Gawn and Neale, my advice this week would be to get cheeky and have some fun with your VC. Take a flyer on someone, if they go huge bank it and, if not, leave the C on Gawn/Neale. For me, I’ll be going Bont into Gawn or Neale.

  1. Great write-up Gunboat!

Think I’ll take a flyer on Macrae or the Bont tonight and then back in Gawn as the back-up.

    Who will score higher tonight;
    T/U: Macrae
    T/D: Bont

    1. Cheers, Froff.

Probably Bont for me. Macrae should comfortably serve up 125, whereas Bont has the higher ceiling this season – either a low ton or goes huge.

      1. Any chance they send a tagger to Bont you reckon GD? Could see Holman running with him, not that Holman’s a renowned clamp however..

I’m also concerned that with Hunter out, Bev will send Macrae back onto the wing

        1. I think there is potential for Bont to cop a stoppage role from Miller who has done it before. It is not likely but defidently something to keep in mind

      2. Just a reminder to those that haven’t been paying attention this season, the Bont averages 100. He shouldn’t even be in our teams, let alone VC.

        1. He’s a lot of people’s M5/6, Daisy. With Neale/Gawn playing in the same game, we’ve got to get creative.

  2. Cheers GunBoat,
I’m very tempted to go Bont to Gawn as well. However, Grundy to Gawn also sounds good – thoughts?

    1. Hey, Max.

Yeah, on paper, Grundy v Eagles looks good:

      L3 v Eagles: 132, 137, 99 (123 av.)
      L3 @ OS: 144, 137, 150 (144 av.)

However, Grundy’s last two scores v Eagles were without Nic Nat playing and he sub-tonned last time he came up against him. With Nic Nat building in form it’ll be a different story, I think.

    2. No mention of Reg in the write up GD but I reckon the Grundy VC is the pick of these. Despite stiff NicNat opposition, I think Reg does more around the ground. Max and Neale to follow, especially with my DPP swing Rivers still on the bench to step in as C if needed.

      1. Hey, Jim.

I’m not completely against Grundy, just concerned that he’ll score an awkward 120~ which some might feel compelled to take. Will sting if Gawn/Neale then go 150 .

  3. Not 100% on my trades for this round so not sure on the VC yet, but i agree with Gunboat on a few things.

Key Doggies mids are good to go tonight if you’ve got them and Neale or Gawn at C seems a good call too.

Me, Neale with C and I might be bringing English into R2 so him, or i’ll back my man Goldy in with the VC. 😉

      1. I would Fos if we had a midfield but the North rehab group is almost larger than the normal group!!

  4. Last three top scorers against adelaide
    Round 7: Jack Steele 162
    Round 6: Tim Kelly 140
    Round 5: Andrew Brayshaw 144

If you wanted a smokey as V/C Zac Merret for the bombers if you own him.

    1. With the wet weather at Metricon does that increase (T/U) or decrease (T/D) the likelihood of Gawn outscoring Neale?

      3

    2. SC still has to fork out 3300 points…..reckon folks read too much into the wet….champs often go even better in the wet.

    1. I think he’ll spend more time out there personally, he’s better at it than Libba, Smith or Bont.

      1. I do get the feeling he will spend some more time out on the wing tonight. However with the doggies giving porter his debut I wouldn’t be surprised to see him slot straight in for hunter and macrae to keep his midfield role. This ones anyone’s guess.

  5. I think I’ll opt for Grundy/Gawn but got to say unlike most rounds there are some knocks on both of them, Maxy’s history V Stef is awful & in general rucks score poorly V Lions, & Grundy I still think doesn’t look 100% & he’s going to have to rely on his around the ground work to score against Nic Nat.

Wet Weather Bont I’m not sure on, Pretty tempted by Greenwood to be honest but he’s had a fair bit of press which always worries me, Josh Kelly is very due one of his big score but like Bont no idea in the wet.

    1. I’m also thinking about Greenwood as an outside VC tonight. Super risky with the weather though. I’m in Brisbane. It’s just started raining and it’s set in for the next few days. Tonight will be slippery. Not the best for Greenwood’s extra 9 pointers.

  6. Can’t risk the standard combo of 2 from Gawn, Grundy or Neale, as the COLL game is immediately before the MEL vs BRI game (not going to guarantee I’ll be around a device late Sunday afternoon).

Reckon Greenwood tonight vs WBD is worth a punt for VC. As for C, Gawn’s got a pretty poor record against BRI over recent years, so maybe go Grundy vs WCE.

  7. Still have Rivers due to other priorities so going to reward him with the c this round. Allows me to v Grundy into Gawn but gotta be quick.
    I love set and forget.

  8. T/up – Trade Starcevich to Maynard/Ridley/Sicily

    T/down – Trade Taylor to Petracca/Walters/Greenwood

  9. Nice stuff GD! I like the call on the doggies midfield tonight, Bont is a tempting VC prospect. Also like the call on taking a punt and going someone a bit left field, docherty been quiet the last couple of weeks, any danger of him going large this week?

    TU – VC Bont
    TD – VC Docherty
    Comment – VC Whitfield

    1. Whitfield is an interesting left field option, but again I worry about him if it’s as wet as they say its going to be.

    2. Cheers, Tip.

Only issue with Docherty is for the last two weeks he’s been tagged and then played as a loose defender. Should be fine v Roos though.

Again, get cheeky with the VC. Good luck!

  10. Does the non-playing loophole for the Grundy/gawn v/c c have to be in the game after they have played , if not how does it work

    0

    0
    1. You will need a non playing player on the field who plays AFTER the Coll – WCE game, if you are looking at Grundy as VC. So that leaves you with a player from Melb, BL, Freo or Geel. Have this player as your Captain, making sure you have the emergency on the bench for whichever player you have taken off the field, so you’ll need your bench player to have not played yet (they will also need to be from one of the 4 teams listed above). Then, if Grundy goes huge and you want to keep his VC score as your Capt score, do nothing, and your emergency score kicks in for your non-playing on field player, who is your Captain. If Grundy’s score isn’t high enough for you, and you want to try your luck with Gawn, then swap your Captain to Gawn. Your non-playing player on the field scores nil, but your emergency bench score kicks in. Take care with the timing, as Grundy finishes not long before Gawn starts. And make sure that the non-playing player you are fielding and putting the Capt in, ISN’T a late in for their team, or your screwed. So always check that they aren’t a late in, especially if they are listed as an emergency for their team.

  11. Does anyone have history on Docherty V North Melbourne?

Thinking of the left field punt VC.

    TU – Steele
    TD – Docherty

    Any input appreciated!
