Let’s take a look at who else is a viable option this week.
GWS v Hawthorn
(Friday – 7:50pm @ UNSW)
The Giants are aiming for their 4th win a row while the Hawks are looking to salvage something from their season. Not willing to back a Hawk this week again, so it’s between the Giants stars such as Lachie Whitfield, Tim Taranto, Toby Greene and Zac Williams. Lachie could explode this week and seems due for a big score, while Greene is in some rare form. Williams loves playing at UNSW and could a sneaky chance to top score on the night. So many tight options, but unlikely to be backed in as your VC.
Best choice: Lachie Whitfield
Melbourne v Collingwood
(Saturday 1:45pm @ MCG)
The best two supercoach players in the competition may not be the best choices in this game as both Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn tend to null each other out. With both averaging well below the best against each other, it could be a battle between two of the best midfield bulls in Clayton Oliver and Adam Treloar. Treloar was the top scoring player last round with a massive 177 while averaging 128.2 over his last 5 games, while Oliver is also in great form and enjoys a recent average of almost 120 against the Pies. Really strong options here.
Best choice: Clayton Oliver
Port Adelaide v Sydney
(Saturday 1:40pm @ AO)
Not an easy game to decide on a top scorer, and once you do, I can’t see them being selected as your captain. The likes of Travis Boak, Jake Lloyd and Luke Parker certainly provide coaches with a POD captaincy option to hopefully sneak a huge VC score, but there are simply too many stronger options elsewhere.
Best choice: Travis Boak
Brisbane v Gold Coast
(Saturday 4:35pm @ Gabba)
The Q Clash seems as one-sided as it ever has been with the Lions flying towards a top 2 finish while the Suns are heading for the wooden spoon. You couldn’t back a Suns player in this match with the top scorer likely to be Lachie Neale, or possibly Jarryd Lyons who is currently in great form! He has averaged 125.0 across last 3 games against the Suns, and there is nothing to suggest he will score anything lower, especially after producing 142 against the Suns in round 6 this season.
Best choice: Lachie Neale
Essendon v Western Bulldogs
(Saturday 7:25pm @ Marvel)
The Dons are struggling to field a full side with plenty of injury woes which has the Dogs licking their lips at the chance to close the gap on top 8 rival. Zach Merrett is always a chance to snag a big score, but it’s the Doggies mids that provide the best value. Take your pick between Jack Macrae, Marcus Bontempelli and Josh Dunkley with all three in excellent form, especially Macrae and Bont. Given Bont has the slightly better average against the Bombers and will be looking to to chase down his chance of a Brownlow, I’m going with him.
Best choice: Marcus Bontempelli.
Geelong v North Melbourne
(Saturday 7:25pm @ GMHBA)
This game should be a lot closer than people suspect as the Cats are in the midst of a form slump while the Kangas have proven their ability to achieve big wins. Todd Goldstein is in fantastic form averaging 130.8 over his last 5 games and could look to dominate an inferior ruck division. The Cats provide plenty of options with the usual suspects in Patrick Dangerfield, Tim Kelly, Mitch Duncan and Tom Hawkins all ore than capable of going large. Goldy vs Danger vs Kelly – who would you take?
Best choice: Patrick Dangerfield
St. Kilda v Fremantle
(Sunday 1:10pm @ Marvel)
Rowan Marshall has been a revelation this season and continues to move from strength to strength with every game. Despite his recent performances, Nat Fyfe is incredibly hard o pass up. 144 last week, an average 134.0 over his last 5 games makes Fyfe, despite his recent form against the Saints, Fyfe gets my selection in this game.
Best choice: Nat Fyfe
Richmond v Carlton
(Sunday 3:20pm @ MCG)
There are several players from this game in decent form including Dion Prestia, Dustin Martin, Bachar Houli and Nic Newman whom are all averaging 110.0 or more over the last 3 weeks. Tom Lynch and of course Patrick Cripps could also score big, but I think it will be a 50-50 decision between Prestia and Dusty.
Best choice: Dion Prestia
West Coast v Adelaide
(Sunday 3:20pm @ OS)
The final game of the round has huge bearing on the top 2 and top 8 with the Crows desperate to steal an upset victory against the Eagles. The Crows best options are Reilly O’Brien and Brad Crouch based on form while both Matt Crouch and Rory Sloane have a very solid recent history against the Eagles. West Coast also have plenty of options with Elliot Yeo, Anrew Gaff, Jack Darling, Dom Sheed, Shannon Hurn, Luke Shuey and Jeremy McGovern all potential point leaders. Comes down to Yeo vs O’Brien for me.
Best choice: Elliot Yeo
Hot Sauce’s Top Picks
- Lachie Neale
- Marcus Bontempelli
- Clayton Oliver
- Brodie Grundy
- Nat Fyfe
Wildcard: Rowan Marshall

Toby Greene for the VC into Neale this week.
Neale into Macrae for me…
Oliver interests me on what’s likely to be a very wet MCG as does Cripps on Sunday.
Dunkley into fyfe?
Macrae into Fyfe?
Fyfe will probably cop the Steele tag, which proved effective in R3 when he kept him to 63 points. I wouldn’t risk the C on a player who may be tagged. Hard to go past Neale into Macrae this week, mrgh.
cheers mate 🙂
@ Gunboat Diplomacy – what about Treloar into Macrae instead?
Yep, Treloar also a terrific option. I’d VC him over Neale if I had him.
Sorry for the late response.
No probs mate… I appreciate the replies & advice.
Even with the weather – i’m going to risk Treloar into Macrae
Fingers crossed!!
Np, really like the VC on Treloar.
Good luck!
@ Gunboat Diplomacy
My opponent is likely to win due to his Sicily & my Parker…
He has C on Macrae too
Should i take Treloar’s 127pts?
Ooof. That is tough.
127 is going to be a pretty good score this round, I’d be tempted to take it. If you think your PODs can make up the deficit between Sicily and Parker, then play it safe with Treloar.
That said, you could protect yourself from being at an even greater deficit by also C’ing Macrae; if he goes huge you remain level with your opponent, if not it doesn’t really make a difference.
So it comes down to:
1) Confidence your PODs can close the gap, go safe with Treloar, 127 is competitive for this round
OR
2) Cover your bases and C Macrae to eliminate the chance of a Macrae 150 sealing your fate, Macrae in great form.
Yeah can’t see me making up the 130pt difference to win…
It’s basically:
His – Macrae, Billings, Walsh, B Smith & B Crouch
vs.
My – Macrae, Dunkley, Logue, D Clarke/Setterfield, Hurn & Houli
If Crouch and Smith have mares, you’ll be in with a chance.
I’d go Macrae to equalize.
@ Gunboat Diplomacy
Thanks for the advice!
Jumped off Treloar last minute & put the C on Macrae
Do I take D Clarke’s 68pts or risk Setterfield?
Haha, nailed it!
Take Clarke’s 68, it’s higher than Setters’ average.
Enough risks for one day lol.
Lol 🙂
Dunkley was a beast & put me up 24 pts!
I’ll be up 92pts taking Clarke’s score – but have played 1 more
After going 15-1 & topping my league by 3 games clear – i don’t want to go out in straight sets in finals… going to be a close call
Best of luck, mate. Let us know how it pans out.
Neale VC into Marshall C
Neale into Macrae but i’m worried Neale getting tag by gcs anyone think he can break it??
Don’t think he’ll be tagged.
Suns usual tagger is Scheer, but he was dropped a few weeks ago, and Miller and Zorko have a famous Q-Clash rivalry; so there won’t be much designated attention on Neale.
Zorks might not come up..
